From IMDB trivia: "The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Sir Michael Caine actively pursued the role of Ebenezer Scrooge when he heard that it was going into production. He had missed out on a guest star role on the TV series The Muppet Show (1976) which was shot in the UK while he was living as a tax exile in the US at the time. However friends and colleagues he knew who had guested on it such as Sir Roger Moore, John Cleese, Peter Sellers and Sylvester Stallone had told him they had a massive amount of fun appearing in the show and that it had also given them extra kudos with children too. By the time this film was greenlighted in 1991, Caine had moved back to the UK and when he heard it was going to be filmed in a a London film studio he had his agent badger Jim Henson Productions until they agreed to meet with him. They then cast him shortly afterwards."
He then insisted he would play the part absolutely seriously. Brian Henson said great. Michael considers this one of his most memorable role he had done.

For that era, absolutely. Patrick Stewart was pretty good. I always thought Anthony Hopkins could play a good Scrooge. Bill Murray was perfect for an 80s version, but because it's 80s, it's an acquired taste. The best by far for me and everyone I know is the Alastair Sim version from 1951. It's like a horror movie, which is how the book is written. It's a ghost story. It should be a horror movie. But all too often, everything has to be toned down. Nobody liked Return To Oz, even though it was the most faithful adaptation of the novels. They liked the Judy Garland version, which was nothing nothing like the books. Parents are a bunch of wimps. The things they do actually harm kids more than the things they're actually afraid of.

There is a song called "When Love is Lost" that is sung when Ebenezer and his girlfriend break up. It was deleted from the film against the director's wishes. It was only in the standard definition version as the original film copy, of the song was thought lost. The film was recently found and inserted in the HD and 4K versions of the film. It makes the final song, "When Love is Found" all the more meaningful.

Following up on how much you loved Kermit's outfit, I've heard from the historical fashion nerds that out of countless productions of A Christmas Carol, this one in particular is hyper-accurate in all its period costuming, not just absolutely nailing the designs down to the year, even during the time skips in the Christmas past sequence, but also accounting for the fact that poorer characters would have fashion that's a few years out of date with respect to what year that particular scene of the story is set in, while the well-off characters have been able to afford the latest.

I adore the original Muppet Movie, but if you measured which of their movies is my favorite by how many times I've rewatched it, this one would win by a mile.
When Caine agreed to do this movie, he stipulated that he would play it seriously. No nod-and-wink "I'm working with muppets" moments. And that's part of why the movie is so good, that he plays it completely straight. For silliness we get Rizzo and Gonzo - sorry, I mean Mr. Dickens.
There are some fun little jokes in the names of the stores during the finale. One of them is names Statler and Waldorf's, after the two old hecklers who in this one played Marley and Marley (in the book there was only one Marley, but they had two here so they could use the two old guys). Another is named Mickelwhite's, which is a reference to Michael Caine's actual last name.
So glad you watched this one, and that you watched it together. It's good to see Tara again. Merry Christmas!

Every actor I've ever heard from says that the difficulty working with Muppets was not acting with them. The Muppeteers tend to stay in performance mode between takes to keep themselves 'on' and there's loads of behind the scenes footage over the years that shows them larking around, complaining about meal penalties or the size of their trailers or whatever. I seem to remember an 'on set interview' with Miss Piggy when this movie happened where she does nothing but bitch about how small her part in the movie is. 🤣 There's some brilliant footage of Ricky Gervais with Elmo that will have you in stitches. Anyway, most actors have said that after a while they realized that they were only relating to the Muppets between takes and were totally ignoring the performers underneath - which made them feel bad but the performers were chill, and that was pretty much a 'mission accomplished' kind of thing for them.
My favorite "Christmas Carol" was the one with George C. Scott as Scrooge that was made for TV about ten years before the Muppets' version. No song and no Muppets, alas, but George is unmatched as Scrooge for me - although it's not like anyone ever screwed up their performance in any version of this story that I've seen.

Take the greatest, most world renowned, story of redemption ever written... set it at Christmastime... add in a couple of ghosts... and you've got "A Christmas Carol". In prose... being a ghost story of Christmas. Published 1843. Entertaining and heart warming, this tale has been performed to audiences in one fashion or another (readings, live stage acting, motion pictures and television) since 1844. Author Charles Dickens would read it to sold out audiences every Christmas Eve until the year before his death in 1870. After it's first sold out publication, charitable giving increased significantly. I, myself, do enjoy the muppet version... but it's the 1970 musical that's my favorite. It was so good seeing Tara again. I miss her reaction channel. Wonderful seeing the Murray sisters doing another reaction together.

Michael Caine was perfect as Scrooge. His one stipulation to taking this role is that he would play it as if he was working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He would never acknowledge that any character was a Muppet. This dedication made his portrayal amazing and helped make this a more of a traditional Christmas musical, instead of just another Muppet Show.

You really should watch the The Muppet Show from the 70's/80's. It was a TV show and so many stars of the day came on the show to do skits and sing with them. It was so fun.

The great Muppet version of the classic story. Michael Cain plays it as straight as if it were a serious stage version. It's amazing to watch a really good actor work. Although there are many versions of the story on film, I would argue for the best being the Alastair Sim version, "Scrooge" (1951).Or the wonderful "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" (1962), the surprisingly touching cartoon musical (with music by Jule Styne, the composer of Funny Girl and Gypsy) It includes all the salient aspects of the story but with humor and good music. And read the book, it's short!

I absolutely love the Muppets! This is a wonderful interpretation of the Dickens classic. I hope that you will watch more Muppet movies. I recommend going back to the original, The Muppet Movie (1979). If you are really interested, maybe you would enjoy watching some select episodes from The Muppet Show (1976-1981). There is hilarious Star Wars special.

I just read an article in which Michael Caine said that although he is proud of many of the movies he made, he has the most affection for this one. The only reason he did it was because he had never made a film that his young daughter could watch. Plus, he had a great time doing it.

30:41 you’ll likely end up forgetting that they’re puppets. Many of the guest stars of the Muppet Show forgot they were puppets because the puppeteers are just so good at what they do.

This is my favorite Christmas Carol adaptation. My favorite character is the Ghost of Christmas Present.
Michael Caine played Scrooge as a dramatic role and treated all the Muppets as fellow actors, which makes a great contrast to all the comedy going around him and gave heart to the story.

This is one of the Mt Rushmore of A Christmas Carol adaptations along with 1938's Reginald Owen's (my personal favorite), 1951 Alistair Sim's (probably the most famous) and the 1984 George C Scott's adaptations.

The line Kermit says about the death of Tiny Tim was a reflection on the loss of Jim Henson and Richard Hunt 'Life is made up of meetings and partings; that is the way of it. I am sure we shall never forget Tiny Tim or this first parting that there was among us.'

I just watched this the other day. Its part of our yearly Christmas show rotation. Always "The Muppets Christmas Carol", "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original), "Christmas Vacation", George C Scott's "Christmas Carol", Bill Murrays "Scrooge", Sandra Bullock "While you were Sleeping", "Willy Wonka", "Wizard of Oz" and of course Rudolph, Frosty, and all the other classic cartoons. Then, Christmas Eve it's always "Its a Wonderful Life" and Christmas Day is always "A Christmas Story". This year we may be adding the sequel that came out last year, "A Christmas Story Christmas". This takes place years later. Ralphie is all grown with a family of his own. Almost all of the original cast are back picking up their old roles but older.

You said, "It makes me want to read some Dickens." Exactly! 'A Christmas Carol' and 'Treasure Island' are two wonderful stories that can introduce children to classical literature, and Brian Henson did a wonderful job with both of them. I also love how carefully they chose the wording for Tiny Tim's death - while Bob Cratchit is lovingly helping his children understand, he is also speaking to the children in the audience.

I think there's a song missing from this version.."When Love Is Gone"... It was only recently restored to the film after being lost for many years... I believe Jeffrey Katsenberg of Disney ordered them to remove the song because it waslow and kids would tune out. Weirdly it was in the VHS release of the film but none after that... However it's on RUclips if you want to see it And it better explains why scrooge was crying in the scene where his girlfriend leaves him.. It also explains the song when love is found later in the film..which was a repriae

It's time to put on make up
It's time to dress up right

But now let's get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started

This is what we call the Muppet Show.

Jen so nice to see a Christmas reaction with your sister. Michael Cain is a good Scrooge, but the best Ebenezer Scrooge is Alistair Sim in Scrooge (UK) from 1951 It was released as
(A Christmas Carol) in the United States that same year.
Admittedly I don't always trust movie ratings, but it has an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It can be seen in black and white or colorized.
Its old so the resolution isn't fantastic, but the acting and story telling is well done.
It's more true to Charles Dickens Novel, and the transformation/redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge in that movie is wonderful. I hope you will watch it.
The Muppet version is fun. Regardless of the version many people seem to forget the message of the Christmas Carol. The important message of compassion, empathy and charity for the less fortunate. A message especially aimed at greedy people that put profits before people/lives.
Just like Ebenezer Scrooge was before his redemption.
Unfortunately profits being put ahead of people is sadly all to common today.
