Your dad was a good man. He always treated me great. I had a lot of respect for him. He said my shooting style was unorthodox but I got results and didn't want me to change. Last time I saw him we played in a poker tournament.
I had surpressed the memory but after therapy sessions… it has came out. My pootyhole had been violated by him multiple times and it still hurts mentally but not physically
Hey Harry!! How you doing guy? Still have my old Mohawk? I still miss Mike Horne, we were yakking a lot before he passed, but it was hard for him to sit down with Prostrate cancer
Literally I am on the phone right now - he's talking to me as I type this - with Mark Pixler, the editor of The Blue Press, informing me he just got a call from someone at the BPD letting us know this qual is still used by the department. Too cool, I say.
Only station/evolution I see missing is the last three shot at 30 yards (30) seconds where Mike had us go to a specific kneeing position he devised for long distance engagement. It would be hard to do now at my age
There was a nice write up of this test and the Bakersfield PD folks in the most recent Dillon Precision hard copy. I agree with Ken, at the time, the Bakersfield PD shooting skills were elevated by the wisdom of not only the testing, but the philosophy of needing the testing and the will to get ready for it. As a result, the Bakersfield PD lost no officers in shootings during that tenure. Great shooting Bill, well done.
Thank you for this video! Mike was my mentor. When he retired, Dave Boyd and I took over Rangemaster duties as the Bakersfield Police Department was growing. The good old days! I've been retired almost 20 years. The BPD target had a 7 inch Ten Ring and an oblong 9 ring. You couldn't have many sixes and pass.
This was discussed in the recent October issue of the Blue Press. It was started in the late 1960s by a former Green Beret turned BPD officer. The Department did it with revolvers and clamshell holsters.
@@paultrent. Hi there. I'm the guy who wrote that article in The Blue Press. The truth is that when Mike Waidelich's BPD qual was implemented in 1968, the department was still using revolvers. Then over Mike's time as the BPD rangemaster, the department switched over to the Smith & Wesson Model 59, then 1911 .45s, then finally the Gen1 Glock 17.
@duane thomas The drill we are talking about did not come about until well after (years after) the department made the switch to SA pistols. Mike developed the skills test as part of his development a codified basic test.
@@paultrent. According to my info, and this comes from discussing it with Ken Hackathorn, who in turn got his info straight from Mike Waidelich, when this test was implemented the BPD was still using revolvers.
Great article in the Fall Dillon Blue Press about the development and results of this COF. As a result of this qualification course Bakersfield P.D. had a hit percentage of 85% in gunfights when the National average was 15%. I think it is significant to mention that unlike many qualification courses there were actual consequences for failure to qualify, up to and including dismissal from the P.D. Which is how it should be in my opinion. Thanks for posting the drill
Thanks for the great video! I love these drills you show us. This one is simple to remember but not easy to do. Very good for essential skill building. Every time there's a new Ken Hackathorn drill video I get as excited as a dog before dinner. Plus, Ken just looks and talks cool. He reminds me of a town Marshal in an old west movie.
Fantastic drill. Thank you so much. I tried it this morning on the range from cold and slick as suggested. Scored 76, so I need to work harder - mainly on the reload stage. Thanks again.
I’m certainly impressed for whatever that’s worth. Of course on the accuracy achieved, Bill had the advantage of shooting one of his own amazing designs.
Thanks you guys so much for these videos, I’m sure you guys extremely busy, don’t have a lot time, this drill videos are my favorite, Ken, bill and Larry, I save them watch old ones over and over practice them myself, watch them night before I go to range
Nice drill! I’ll try this next trip out w my EDC XTEN and Norma spec ammunition. I practice a lot from AIWB concealment at 7 yds., one shot on an eight inch target in 2 seconds or less. It’s definitely very critical to clear the concealment garment while acquiring a proper grip and drawing.
I love this video. I have 2 full size pistols one with a red dot and one without. I agree with everything he said on accuracy and speed , everything. I can consistently hit a pie plate at 25 yds without the red dot. After that distance it goes to the red dot. But who shoots that far on self defense
I did these drills for qualification back in the 90s. We also had to draw and fire from the hip at 7 feet which took some practice, although you hoped you never had to be in that dire of a situation. I appreciate that you brought up the added time caused by a duty-rig as well as concealment. That impedance is often overlooked.
You are both fantastic, I am a big believer in staying proficient and seeking more training, I am also a big fan of Wilson Combat firearms, I am asking for a long time to start your classes again at Wilson Combat I believe not only owning the best handguns but to have the best training to go with them, Please Start The Training Classes Again, God Bless You Both.
Interesting enough and certainly not an easy drill. You have motivated me to try it out when I hit the range next time. It will be a well-spent 10 rounds.
So Coo! 👍 Bakersfield CA. COP QUAL. Interesting 🤔 Used the CAT scale there back in my big rig days. I'm glad to have never needed what I strapped back then 🙄
How significant were the results of this qualification program? As previously mentioned, 85 percent hits in gunfights when the national average was 15 percent. Put another way, Bakersfield officers were outperforming the national average in police gunfights by a factor of 5.7 (rounded up). Not one officer was killed in a gunfight while Mike Waidelich was the Bakersfield PD rangemaster.
I shot this COF over the past weekend in a class taught by Justin Dyal, this is a challenging and fun course. As far as the video, my understanding is that the original qual used a 7" circle, not the 8" circle on the IDPA target, so it looks like Bill would be down two more points.
Of I remember correctly that couourse of fire was to represent different distances ans officers could face . If I remember correctly the 60 foot mark was a typical distance from a sidewalk to a door on the other side of the street
I love range time. Draw, shoot 2 on target is such a good practical skillset to have. Get good at getting your gun out and making hits, but not just adrenaline fueled mag dump into single target
I shot a lot of rounds in and around Bakersfield. Waaaay back, I got 30 ground squirrels in like 23 minutes with my 17hmr. Beautiful place, except for the month August!!
Good shooting Bill, don't know if my nerves would've allowed me to hit in the circle at 60 feet:) Especially on camera:) Nice drill though Ken and here's to WC.
I know that this video is over a year old and nobody is going to see this comment, but I’m happy to say that after a lot of training and practice I was finally able to score 100 on this drill from a duty type holster.
The man is definitely a professional. I doubt I could beat him, but if he had a bad run and I had a great one. Of course it would have to be a odd Thursday I think I might inch past his score.
That’s just great set of standards. Outstanding. Nice low round count drill. Outstanding- shooting Mr. Wilson…Almost as outstanding as Ken’s shirt! 😂😂😊😅
Hey, there. I'm the guy who wrote that article on the BPD qual published in The Blue Press. Time standard for the reload drill is 6 seconds for semiautos, 8 seconds for a revolver.
@@DuaneThomas1963 Was the 8 seconds for revolvers allowing the loading single bullets from a loose pouch? All without the use of a six shot speed loader. You can definitely load a revolver with a speed loader in less than 8 seconds.
@@whomagoose6897. In the late '60s, revolver speedloaders were not commonly issued items for police, but Bakersfield issued them. So, to answer your question, the 8 seconds was using a speedloader.
You lose one point for every point down from possible on-target, and one point for every quarter second over the time standard. So, let's say that, on Drill #1, two shots from the holster in 1.50 seconds, you shoot a down-0 and a down-1 in 1.69 seconds, that would be two points down total - one for the down-1 hit, one for the the overtime.
For my defensive handguns I still prefer tritium iron sights. I’m a fairly young man who doesn’t have the income to be a “1%er” and shoot thousands of rounds a year. So I also can’t really afford to purchase sights that are as expensive as the very few guns that I actually own. If I was going to spend that kind of money on sights I would be more willing to put one on a rifle or PCC where the advantage would be much more noticeable.
Born and raised in Bakersfield 51 years now. I've watched it turn into LA a. Far too many people far far too much traffic In crime like this city has never experienced before. Plus c***** weather And everything is Brown 9 months out of the year.
