Since I have to work in an office, my "game" is to drink like a gallon of water a day. That means that I need to pee every 60-90 minutes, which means I'm regularly getting up, walking, *and* washing my hands throughout the day. Boom take that COVID.

I noticed big differences when I started drinking about 1 gallon of water (not including other drinks, which I don't drink all that much of anyway) every day. I got a 1/2 gallon bottle, so I only have to fill it twice a day, which makes tracking easier. My skin did improve, I didn't feel as hungry (and thereby lost weight, a little, but not insignificant), I had a generic feeling of "betterness". HOWEVER. I definitely was a person who didn't drink much of anything at all ever before, so I 100% was probably slightly dehydrated on a regular basis. It took a while to adjust and it wasn't easy getting all that fluid down. I felt like I was internally swimming until my body accepted that it was finally being hydrated. But it has been 3+ months now I can drain a gallon+ without thinking about it, and I REALLY notice on days when I didn't drink as much. So there's no harm in trying, because you never know, but unless you're like me, a historically and chronically under-hydrated person, you may not notice a difference at all.
A few years ago I went on a water challenge and have pretty much kept up the habit since. From time to time I’ll have a/few days where I’m not drinking much, usually if my routine is off due to holiday’s etc, and I usually realise because my head will feel pressure and generally not as ‘normal’ feeling. Then it’s like oh okay I haven’t had a glass of water since yesterday better fix that. Water isn’t a miracle cure buts it’s absence is noticeable.

I've worked outdoors in Florida for over 5 Decades, I learned REAL FAST to either keep some Salt Rocks in a zip lock baggy and suck on one every few hours or to put about a 1/4 teaspoon of Iodized Salt into each gallon of water I took with me. Later I started adding an 1/8 teaspoon of NoSalt (Potassium Chloride, Potassium Bitartrate) into it as well. I felt much better drinking that than just plain water while sweating through my cloths during the UNGODLY Humid Summers here while on a Roof laying shingle. ;~) P.S. I've had end-stage renal disease since I was 16 and had two kidney transplants. My water tracking app has been very useful in making sure I stay properly hydrated everyday.
I love Aaron just telling everyone to chill about water. Your internal signals are working just FINE hahah. I'm going to just listen to my internal signals. A lot of times when I don't drink water or overeat it's actually because I'm not pausing to actually see how my body feels. I do check ins with ppl all the time, I should do an hourly check in with my body ❤️
Those easy-fill water stations are so underrated for staying hydrated. I used to buy so many bottled teas from the vending machine at work, and then once we got an easy-fill water station and I got a good reusable water bottle, I quit buying stuff from the vending machine cold turkey and saved SO much money.

As a manual therapist, I get asked questions about water intake all the time. I also find myself asking my patient's when their tissue feels "gummy" to me if they're drinking enough water. A close friend suffered from migraines for 30 years- turns out he was simply chronically dehydrated. He did drink water but not quite enough.... now he drinks more water and he's fine. I love that you made this video because people need to know that there is no perfect amount across the board and that it is very individual. If I don't get a minimum of ~70oz in an average day, I will wake up the next day in more pain than normal and will feel very achy and almost swollen (one of my personal indicators that I am dehydrated actually is finger swelling). It's great that you did this test because now you can use it as a baseline to see what your body likes as far as water intake, which it sounds like you are doing. I wish more people would give it a try! Oh, and keeping track is easy if you just use a large bottle or thermos, like a litre or more. It's simple to count to 2 or 3 and know you have met your goal! Using that larger container was the change I needed to make sure I got the water my body wanted to be happy. :)
Having been actually dehydrated before, I gotta say you can definitely tell that something is wrong. For me it happened slowly over the course of a couple weeks - I'd walk to work and feel super tired (like, almost fall asleep standing up tired) so I figured I should drink some caffeine and push through it because I didn't really have a choice. In hindsight, it was drinking like a quart of liquid that helped rather than the caffeine. But it clearly wasn't enough to compensate for walking 20 minutes each way in the summer heat plus working on my feet for 8 hours in a warm kitchen without sitting down, because it kept happening. Being young and dumb I dismissed it even though that level of tired on a normal night's sleep isn't normal. And then one day I felt a little dizzy, then a lot dizzy, then I was so dizzy I was throwing up/heaving well past when my stomach was empty. So I called the nurse line at my university's health clinic and the nurse told me I needed to go to a doctor immediately. Which in all honesty probably saved my life because I felt so terrible I don't think I had the wherewithal to make rational decisions, but the straightforward instruction of "go to a doctor now" was simple enough
Definitely I was chronically dehydrated until I was 22 when I started researching dehydrated skin to try and improve my awful, tight, oily, spotty skin. It took quite a few months to see a difference but it's been incredibly important to force myself to drink more. I can literally see a huge change in texture and lines in my face when I forget. Just wanted to say unless anyone is having similar issues.
I had acne and horrible scarring for two decades - then i started drinking water. And my acne almost completely subsided... I mean, i never drank water before. To me it still tastes bad. But the benefits are so visible! Buuuut... drastic changes happen only if the state of things earlier was sub-optimal...
@@CityKanin Thank you for sharing that. I suffer from acne as well and have decided to do better with my water intake. I have seen an improvement with my acne in the past as well when I drank more water. Thank you
Maybe if by "dehydrated" they mean that you need to drink water, sure. That's why we feel thirsty after all. But it's not like it's a health issue to feel thirsty. That's just silly. And calling it dehydration instead of thirst is pretty shitty of them.
glad you've taken the time to bust some hydration/dehydration myths & mentioned that you can drink too much as well! i've developed a bit of a compulsive habit (for lack of a better word) since childhood (when i actually got hospitalised for over-hydrating) & tend to drink too much or not get peace of mind until i've had another sip of water & it's Not Cute. this weird 'make sure you hydrate!!!' culture that has developed recently surely means well but it only triggers me to drink even more which is all but ideal so it's so good to see that being talked about!
I’m a classical singer, so I drink 3 liters of water per day (counting tea and other beverages). I thought I drank enough before starting to track it on an app, but I honestly probably drank less than half of what I currently do. It hasn’t changed my life, but it’s good for my vocal health, especially on days when I spend several hours singing, and it does keep me from feeling the need to snack. I don’t know how much it really affects my overall health, but I enjoy it. Hydrate, feel great!
Adding a little natural salt and cream of tarter.. Tiny bit and the salt just to taste. Will help you to retain more water. Tap water needs these tweeking
China's Tattoo @8:15 in case you're wondering: “It is very sad to me that some people are so intent on leaving their mark on the world that they don’t care if that mark is a scar.” - John Green
Also it takes time for the body to hydrate , just because you drink water doesnt mean you are hydrating it takes time for your cells to absorb the water , which is why if you go to long without water and you finally get it , it can still be fatal
My friend had been using that app for a while and then went to the doctor to get some tests done and they told her that the urinalysis showed she was drinking way too much water 🤷♀️
I did this myself after reading all the stuff about water and skin and weight loss and i noticed absolutely no difference other than peeing every hour. My eyes were still dry, my skin was still dry, i still got headaches and worst of all i was still hungry and needing snacks. What i do notice is when i don't eat enough watery veggies and fruits. Like when i don't eat melons/cucumbers for a while, i do notice a difference. So me thinks our bodies might be absorbing more water from our food than from actually drinking water.
I think that is actually correct. Something along the lines of when we drink water on its own it just slooshes through, but when we drink/eat it with other stuff, soups, foods high in water content, then it is digested differently by our bodies, offering more benefits. I might have butchered that quite a bit, but its the general gist of it. Good job for noticing - as in, we are told these things walk 10,000steps, drink 2ltrs, but we still need to remember to listen to our bodies.
I had migraines for almost 10 years every day or every other day. About a year ago my boyfriend told me everyday to drink water. That changed my life. Now I have max 3 headaches in one month and they aren't that severe than before. I am not saying that everyone should do it, but it is worth a try. :)
Something about this doctor makes me feel like hes just like....whatever...You feel odd? okay you feel better? great! you thirsty? Drink. Your not thirsty? Dont drink. Your doing fine kid!
Eventually, you can drink so much water your wash out your electrolytes and one morning you wake up and your muscles burn, you can't move, and you hurt like hell all over like fibromyalgia. Sometimes your heart races and lips and nail beds crack too, because that kind of hydration triggers a homeostatic rebound. The irony is once you pass the over-hydration point, you have a thirst you can't quench and then you stop your own heart all by yourself with more water for a burning thirst that can't be quenched. It happened to me with over one gallon per day, and my friend who was drinking cans of carbonated water to lose weight. When he called me to tell me he could barely curl his fingers to hold the phone I told him what I did to break the cycle: Drink a cup of boullion to replace electrolytes. It relieves water rebound within minutes. After that, both he and I stopped binging on waters our bodies weren't designed to ingest. My friend diagnosed with fibromyalgia, stopped drinking water and her pains cleared up. Interestingly at about the same time MORE WATER was the recommendation for 'cleansing' and 'weight control', MORE CASES of fibromyalgia started to pop up out of nowhere.
Drink when you’re thirsty. Pay attention to your thirst and don’t ignore it. But don’t over drink to meet some arbitrary goal. Listen conscientiously to your body, and you’ll end up naturally drinking the right amount.
@@vazzmatazz Then your body doesn't need the extra fluid because it is getting it from somewhere else. There is no way the thirst mechanism could easily fail.
@@ian1352 not true. I agree with Vaz, except in my case I've always had trouble sensing when I'm thirsty, even as a child. I end up realising I'm dehydrated by way of headaches, dry, gritty eyes (my main motivation to hydrate), the fact I haven't peed in a while and noticing low volume and deep yellow colour when I do pee. Often I'm able to go all day without realising I'm highly dehydrated.
@@claireelizabeth2057 I only mentioned it because she herself mentioned wondering if the water drinking would help it clear up. My personal experience with skipping dairy was quite noticeable. I know how much acne sucks, that's why I'd be interested to see if it would help her out too. Only love for Chyna here. She's supercool!
We're the only animals on earth that drink water the instant we feel the slightest bit of thirst. All other animals have to find a water hole when they're thirsty, which could be hours or days away.
I think you came out of this with the best lesson : pay attention to what your body tells you about thirst. I've been forcing myself to pay attention to that these past months because... well, work/studies keep me concentrated for long period of times, during which I don't wanna go get a drink as soon as I feel thristy. Then I (usually, during non-covid) have a few hours of commute to factor in, groceries, chores, etc. I thus want to enjoy my hobbies for more than a few minutes and tend to ignore thirst as well. Then sleepy time and I've been awake so late (15 hours of hard day + 2 of trying to relax at least a bit) that going to fetch for water seems like such a pain and... And then the migraine, bowel trouble, laziness, lack of concentration, etc. As doc said, it's an easy fix. But as soon as you let life make you forget about it, you just drown under the problems while feeling sh*irt for a dumb reason.
This is SO my rant! I see ladies at work who SIT ALL DAY at a computer and guzzle stale water from plastic jugs as if they just finished a 5 mile run in the desert.
I worked on a trail crew with a woman who was dogmatic that I was dehydrated. I felt fine, but she took literally 10 per brakes a day. As I learned from Jon Mulaney, that is too much urination.
I used to think drinking water often is a sign of weakness. Until i had urinary issues. Doctor told me to drink more or i have to find my self a new kidney in the future. So i did. I never knew a little change in habit can have a huge impact. 😃
Why would drinking water frequently be a sign of weakness? How did you come to that conclusion? I'm honestly interested in the logic behind your previous idea, that thought never occurred to me.
@@Sarah.lux. , well i guess its an ego thing. For instance, when me and my friends play ball, i often have to pause and take a sip. Which kinda disrupts the flow of the game. My friends yell at me and say quit being a drag and wait till the half is done. Stuff like that. Kinda lame. But you know how men are. 😂
@@jaminwaite3867 , keyword there sir is "often". 😁 Its not like...drinking water for me is a sin. Its how often you should do it. I used to run a lot too before this pandemic. I can go for 10km without taking a sip. Even if its a bit humid. Because to me drinking somehow slows you down. Until i found out it was a bad idea.
I used to be on a medication that totally wiped out my feelings of hunger, thirst, and exhaustion. I wouldn't know I needed food or water until I started eating or drinking. So for me, tracking my water intake for a few weeks was a great way to get used to tuning into my body once I switched to a medication without those symptoms.
I told you to do this!!!!! Yay so happy you did it. Yeah I didn’t expect it to change your life but it just good to feel normal rather than poppy. Love you keep up the good work.
I love Dr. Aaron Carroll! Glad you asked both of them! But, seriously, when I saw the title he was the first person I thought about. He really changed how I thought about the whole "eight glasses a day" thing.
I remember being informed once (and have since seen several articles that say the same thing) that although caffeine has a slight diuretic effect you don’t lose nearly as much water as you gained just from what was in the tea/coffee, so it’s still a net gain. Which makes a lot of sense to me lol!
Small codicil: In really dry, hot places, your thirst is _not_ a reliable measure. That's one reason kids have died in workouts in Texas. My husband has accidentally passed out from dehydration when working outside. I once forgot to bring water on a medium walk in late summer, and ended up almost passing out (I started seeing black spots) before I could get to water, even though I hadn't been thirsty when we started. And we don't even live in actual desert. You can dehydrate before you get thirsty in very hot, dry places. If you live in one of them, it can be a good practice to make sure you drink something before you go out and about in the hot sun, and definitely have water on hand if you're going to be sweating outside at all.
Next Challenge: Cutting out gluten and dairy. This helped my skin greatly and I think Chyna can benefit from it. If this gets selected, show my comment pleeeeeese YEET
Not currently in Antarctica, but I was there for almost 5 months during the previous summer season! "Hydrate or die-drate," was definitely a common saying amongst my coworkers, one even adding on, "and then everyone will cry-drate." 😂 And as far as shipping, it can take a while, but just about anything can be sent down to the ice!
I definitely think Craig is onto something where drinking water when you're feeling crappy (not thirsty) makes you feel better. I fall into the same trap where I think the solution to feeling tired in the morning is drinking more caffeine b/c the first cup "did nothing" or I don't feel fully awake when my body needs water. I have no idea why my body doesn't signal any thirst for me, but it works if I remember to drink it.
Thanks for all the good research here. I think lack of water causing a headache is sort of not as obvious but totally obvious correlation. Brain don't like to feel dry. I think it could have been relevant to some how categorize the tendency to forget to drink water, and also if drinking slowly vs large amounts makes a difference . As a person in the desert in Arizona, who is often 'dry' ( i NEED lip balm) I feel like water retention has a lot of subtle nuances...Sadhguru talks about 'eating water', meaning your body retains water better via eating plants / fruits that have 70-90% water content. He also talks about over hydration and how it creates subtle brain chemical imbalance. Of course there is the very wide subject of qualities of water, including the subtopic of city water with a wide variance of legal amounts of foreign substance (like hexane and arsenic ) vs the health recommendation. Also somehow I didnt always know that water is always integrated into the blood stream then filtered out by kidneys later...it doesnt go straight to bladder. Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, removing wastes and extra water to make urine. Sorry for this long message...i blame caffeine on a rain day
Yes, it can be insidious too. If you don't have an issue realizing you are thirsty, then you probably don't need to keep track of it. But there are some people, like myself, who have trouble telling they are hungry or thirsty. In the past I became dehydrated to the point of having daily migraines, culminating in eventually passing out and ending up in the ER. 2 bags of IV saline and I was fine. I was 2 liters short but didn't feel, or at least couldn't recognize, any sense of thirst. Now I'm able to recognize the symptoms of mild dehydration in myself, and so know to go drink water, but I still rarely, if ever, feel a sense of thirst.
I could never keep up with tracking my number of glasses. Instead, I bought a lovely copper pitcher that I fill up each morning, and drinking all the water in the pitcher is easy to keep track of, and I stay well hydrated every day.
I just wash my face, and body, with scent free sensitive shampoo. No drying out. I never got into the habit of drinking soda. Gave up coffee, decaf, for about 18 months. Now I drink sparkly water with lime. I DESPISE tap water. Makes me nauseated. Why? No clue. Haven't had tap water in decades.

The internal sources work great, if we lsiten to them. Make sure you have a glass ready, when you fell like a snack (and it is not snack/food time), have some water. It it is most likely what you need. Do _not_ snack a full bowl of salty popcorn and then go to bed without anything to drink for half a day.
I started about two months ago to try and strive to drink at least one 1.5L bottle of water or more a day and haven't looked back. My skin is now far less dry, I get far less headaches and snack far less. My goal was actually to cut sugary drinks out of my diet, which I realised was the cause of my persistent sugar crashes at work. This was very hard and found often craved fizzy drinks. About two weeks ago I started drinking Diet Coke, and whilst it's not the same as Coke or Dr Pepper, it's a worthy progression looking at my goals. I find my diabetic symptoms have mostly gone and feel much better overall. I've also been trying to walk 3 miles a day, which isn't a complete success, however it is a positive change in the right direction!

An abused little girl is hiding a big, big secret. So, secret, and so big, that nobody might believe her.
The Angel looked at her, and the girl looks behind her, and essentially, she sees nothing.
But, she knew she was there.
"You want me to leave you alone, don't you?"
She said, typically, it's usually the Angel that leaves the human alone, and lets them go on with their business.
So, she was surprised...
The Angel looked at her and said nothing. The Angel was like an animal looking at a human, curiously, while staring at her.
"Um... So... That's a yes...?"
"No!"💓
I've had end-stage renal disease since I was 16 and had two kidney transplants. My water tracking app has been very useful in making sure I stay properly hydrated everyday.
I am also a transplant patient, 92-120oz a day.

And sooo much plastic from the landfill!!!

Nice to watch a clean and positive RUclips channel with light hearted jokes and no swearing
Aaron seems like he's really against water. He's clearly part of Big Soda.
Those people, the ones with a thumbs down, they clearly didn't drink enough water.
Or they gave a thumbs down because of the bs fron that so called 'doctor' at the beginning of the video.
The skin thing, to me, is less of a "water helps your skin" to a "chronic under-hydration will show up in your skin"
Yes I agree.

If you had drunk more water during your vegan challenge, you would have felt better.
All that extra fiber needs extra water to go with it.
I've had many trainers say "If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated". I wish they would stop.
Many trainers and you haven't figured out what they are saying yet? Ask questions the next time you hear that.
I learned in nursing school that when u feel thirsty you are already 50 percent dehydrated.
Maybe if by "dehydrated" they mean that you need to drink water, sure. That's why we feel thirsty after all. But it's not like it's a health issue to feel thirsty. That's just silly. And calling it dehydration instead of thirst is pretty shitty of them.
Seeing the products you two promote makes me question if this channel is for me…yet, it clearly is. Love ya!
glad you've taken the time to bust some hydration/dehydration myths & mentioned that you can drink too much as well! i've developed a bit of a compulsive habit (for lack of a better word) since childhood (when i actually got hospitalised for over-hydrating) & tend to drink too much or not get peace of mind until i've had another sip of water & it's Not Cute. this weird 'make sure you hydrate!!!' culture that has developed recently surely means well but it only triggers me to drink even more which is all but ideal so it's so good to see that being talked about!

I love that you talked to Dr. Aaron Carroll - both of your RUclips channels are awesome!
I tend to pee a lot more when I drink more water 💧
Huh I wonder why

Also it takes time for the body to hydrate , just because you drink water doesnt mean you are hydrating it takes time for your cells to absorb the water , which is why if you go to long without water and you finally get it , it can still be fatal

@@jackiem9460 That's the point. Drinking that much works for you. It may not work for someone else and someone else might need more.
That's interesting
Yeah there's definitely too much of an emphasis on water and not enough on electrolytes

Drink when you’re thirsty. Pay attention to your thirst and don’t ignore it. But don’t over drink to meet some arbitrary goal. Listen conscientiously to your body, and you’ll end up naturally drinking the right amount.
If I drank when I'm thirsty I'd never drink anything. I think I had a functioning sense of thirst when I was a kid but not since then.

Same! And then complaining when it's lunch break and they haven't reached their water goal for that morning!
I worked on a trail crew with a woman who was dogmatic that I was dehydrated. I felt fine, but she took literally 10 per brakes a day. As I learned from Jon Mulaney, that is too much urination.
Oh you didn't know they were better humans than you for finishing all that water? Duuhhhhh

“Different drinks for different drinks” my new favourite quote!
I remember being informed once (and have since seen several articles that say the same thing) that although caffeine has a slight diuretic effect you don’t lose nearly as much water as you gained just from what was in the tea/coffee, so it’s still a net gain. Which makes a lot of sense to me lol!
A friend of mine drinks 8 2 litre bottles of water a day. I tried to keep up one time and I was living in the bathroom.
Kelsey Drummond drinking 16 lots of water a day could kill you, stop now.
I love dr. Aaron’s channel
Only people it helps are people that don’t drink enough fluids. Simple.

“Different drinks for different dinks” HAHAHA! 😄 WheezyWaiter brings me joy.
I spent a week in the hospital for dehydration. No kidding!
Very few people understand how painful severe dehydration is!
Sorry for this long message...i blame caffeine on a rain day
Be honest, who here went to grab a glass of water after this video?

The doc is ignoring chronic dehydration, where you get used to being slightly thirsty all the time.
Instead, I bought a lovely copper pitcher that I fill up each morning, and drinking all the water in the pitcher is easy to keep track of, and I stay well hydrated every day.
ignatius equality I recycled a half gallon milk jug, not as pretty 🙁 but it works. 😀
