Makhachev vs Martins. That KO loss taught Islam that he didn’t have Khabib’s granite chin, so he leveled up his striking and became nearly impossible to hit. 61% striking defense and 1.27 SApM is ridiculous
I do think that Islam's only loss did in fact cause him to improve his striking to the next level, but at the same time I think it's very situational what happened. I know Khabib has a good chin but just like everyone else he is human, and if he gets hit with a proper strike to the face he will also crumble. IF Khabib really does not have the same level of striking defense as Islam and relies on his so-called granite chin, then it's simply a matter of Khabib never having fought enough for him to get rocked bad by that one strike that leads to a loss.
How can you exclude Islam Makhachev? He himself has said that he was wild and reckless early in his career, looking to swing for the fences and ragdoll them from the start. After his loss to Adriano, he completely changed his approach and is now considered one of the best strikers in the UFC and damn near un-hittable.
Islam's striking has gotten much better and looked better each of his last few fights, but one of the best strikers in the UFC is a stretch and Volk hit him plenty his first fight.
@@RaoVenu Maybe I'm wrong and I will admit his striking is much better than I originally thought it was (before the first volk fight) but I still don't think he's one of the best strikers in the UFC, one flash KO doesn't change that. Trust me, I'm not hating, the dude is legit and has done a good job (imo) of separating his game from Khabib's (Khabib really only had a jab, Islam's striking is much more refined) so he can be his own fighter. I'd love to see him get in a stand up war with Gaejthe or someone similar, then I think I'd have a better gauge on where his striking is. His striking is very good, I just don't know if it's elite. Time will tell.

I mean he KO'd Usman but Usman did not expect Leon to be so much better at grappling later
