MrPandabros I mean a lot of schools offer Spanish as the secondary language up until high school, unless students want to continue it (which most colleges require anyway, at least 2-3 years of a secondary language in high school)
When I was learning English and Spanish I didn't really feel an "expansion of my mind" but I actually felt just an expansion of my sources of knowledge and ways to communicate, now I'm trying with Mandarin and I'm finally experiencing that expansion in my vision of the world
see kids, if you live in a first world country you can work for couple of months in McDonalds and then travel all over the world here where i live you would work your ass off on a "good job" for an entire year just to go to Turkey for 1 week

your first video about learning Italian has inspired me so much that I'm now learning French in a fast-track way. I've never learned another language before and I thought I'd hate it. But come to find out, I'm actually loving it so far! Not only that, but because of this, I've found something to help me get out of bed in the morning. It's helping me climb out of the depression that I've been battling with for years. Thanks Nathaniel. Thanks for not only making these language videos, but for putting the amount of work into it that you do. The inspiring filming and editing makes the difference between someone like me seeing it as "oh that's pretty cool." and "wow that's incredible! I want to try that too!"
Thats awesome man. Can i ask, how has the French come along since this comment? Im thinking of learning french myself but have had trouble deciding whether i want to learn it or a different language first.
@@raulcalma-deal8792 At the moment I use Pimsleur, Anki and bit of duolingo, all of them each day. replacing tv and youtube with french equivalents also helps
Hello Nathaniel, I must confess, each time I learn a little bit more about your vision of the world I get more impressed and I couldn't agree more. I'm a brazilian who lived in France for two years (2015-17), and this experience also opened my eyes to see how learning a new language and a new culture can make you see things from a new perspective. Ton français franchement est incroyable, nickel. In questo momento io sono anche imparando italiano, sono veramente molto contento di facerlo, è una lingua apassionante. We see many people criticizing others in the internet today, I just wanted to do the opposite, love your work, keep up with it. Cheers from Brazil, hope someday you'll also learn portuguese :D
It's wonderful to see that are people who are from my country (🇧🇷) and that they have the opportunity (like you) to live a new life in a new perspective. One of my goals (and maybe the greatest) is to live new ways and experiment this amazing life. Thanks for share your experience and for contribute with my dreams giving me more willing and hope to trust on them.
Hey man, you are doing great with Italian but let me correct some mistakes...when you talk about an actual action you have to use the verb "stare" so it is "io sto imparando l'italiano" like in Brazilian " eu estou aprendendo Italiano" then we say "farlo" not "facerlo" and a minor mistake is "appassionante"😊
Isso aí família, nova visão de mundo, novas perspectivas! This videos have opened my mind and my eyes in so many levels, Nathaniel is doing something great!
Si, è vero, grazie per l'aiuta @@paolodominici202 😁 Ah, I'll help you too. Even having some differences between our vocabulary and the one from Portugal, we still say we speak portuguese. Officially there's not a brazilian language. Buuuuut, if you're just reconizing our identity, thanks a lot!!
Learning languages literally changed my life. I'm native in Japanese and 10 years ago when I traveled to London, went out of the island of Japan for the first time and faced the total different world, I felt tremendous frustration for my incapacity to talk with people due to the language barrier. That experience turned into my motivation enough to learn English and since then I've worked for it a lot. Now I speak English and work with people from all around the world, speak Spanish and live in Mexico. Currently I started leaning French. This journey is so exciting and probably I won't stop learning new languages.
This is exactly how I felt with Turkish, when we would visit family and friends in Turkey. I felt stuck like I couldn't engage in conversation that I was bursting to have. At age 20, I was offered an opportunity by my aunt to live with her in Istanbul and learn Turkish fluently. I made my decision within 4 hours but I waited for 2 weeks to really assess if this is what I truly wanted. Best decision that I made for myself. It certainly expanded my relationship and love for my grandpa being able to speak in Turkish with him. I'm the only one in my family that speaks Turkish fluently in the States. I desire to learn Arabic or Italian next.
Man, every time I see your videos makes trying to be a better me, you makes me stand up and see my self and make me realise that I don't do anything productive whit my time. you always inspire me, you are one of my favorites youtubers. I do really love your videos.
@@fahimmahmud7310 You've hit upon an interesting exception in the English language. Your reply was, "I'm, actually." We never use the contraction, in this instance. According to the rules, it's perfectly valid; yet we never express it that way. You can say, "I'm going to the store" or "I am going to the store." But when someone asks, "Are you there yet?" You never reply, "I'm." You have to say, "I am." But, and this is where it makes no sense, you can say "I'm not." LOL Again, I do not mean this as a criticism but merely an observation about English that makes it difficult to learn. Good luck!
I come from a small country in Europe (Slovenia) and the majority of people speak at least 2 foreign languages. We don't really have a choice since we have to communicate with foreigners pretty often (whether it is inside our country or when we go abroad for shopping, vacation or work).
He even got that deep Argentinian accent. I’m very happy that my parents always spoke to me in spanish and my sisters taught me to read and write in spanish. Thanks to them i speak English and Spanish and gained an interest in learning other languages like Portuguese, Italian and French
I actually am learning Italian as my third language , french is cool but it has more Germanic influences then spanish, Italian , Portuguese.I also have this wierd obsession and fascination with the various languages spoken in Spain , Gallego, Catalan, euskera( basque language ) Asturian, etc .
Fantastic video. I speak English and French and I’ve been trying to learn Norwegian but I’ve hit a bit of a plateau. This video is the inspiration I needed, thank you Nathaniel!
Same here, I speak English and French and I am trying to learn Russian. I reached the B2 level (upper-intermediate). At this point, I find it challenging to further improve myself and become Advanced. Maybe I should travel to Russia :(
Je regarde tes vidéos depuis quelques mois. Je suis français. Je suis content de voir ce que la France a pu t'apporter ! Tu parles bien français avec peu d'accent !
100% agree! I’m learning Spanish, know Mandarin Chinese apart from English, and I think speaking other languages is so beautiful not only because it connects you to other cultures, histories and, people, but also cos you have to put away your ego and be okay with making mistakes. It shows a respect on your part to native speakers of the language. And people understand that - they’re so much more open + warm when you try to speak their language! Also I just found your Me Llamo Nathan channel and it’s super useful as listening practice + your argentine accent is amazing!
I’m trying to start learning Mandarin, do you have any sources that would be helpful? Should I take classes or go to a tutor or are there enough online resources?
@@Ryan-xj3ep Classes would definitely be useful, if you don't live in a country or area in which Chinese is the main language, you don't get the opportunity to be in an environment where that language is vital for communication. There are definitely more than enough online resources though, there are apps and websites where you can talk to people who are native speakers and for a language like CHinese which is so popular theres a shit ton of apps too. If you have the means to pay for a tutor or classes I do think that it would be beneficial and if it's not you can always quit, so definitely try a class and see if it works for you. Apps like ChineseSkill and Hello Chinese are useful and Pleco which is a dictionary available on IOS is extremely useful. Watching shows and movies in Chinese would also be beneficial as it allows you to get a grasp and idea as to how the language is used and structured.
I can second what you say. But speaking several languages is such a cool experience and truly helps you as in the everyday life as in a foreign country. Years ago, I was struggling with French and Spanish (I'm French-Spanish blooded) when my family moved back to France after a 12 year living in Australia. Now, with almost a daily practice of all the languages I know, being trilingual and learning 5 languages are part of my routine. And by doing so, I'm having fun with languages. In the hope that my story will help you to learn and speak new languages effortlessly...
I love this video! While living in China for 7 years, I concur that language is a gateway to understanding culture. While I was comprehending at a rudimentary level, I still felt connected to the people in my everyday life. When I lived in Thailand for several years, I didn’t learn the language because it wasn’t necessary - but I lost out on a lot. I am currently studying Portuguese, and this was what I needed to see today to get me out of a dry spell. Thank you!
I arrived in France yesterday for university from South Africa. Speak very little French, understand very little. This vas fantastic to watch. Thanks a lot.
Bc of u man, I started learning French, and got better on my Portuguese. Ur videos really inspire me to learn languages and to connect to different people in the world. I can currently speak English, Español, and Português, and on my way to learn more. Keep making videos man, ur helping a lot of people
I can speak English fluently, I can understand Tagalog pretty well, and now, I began learning French more in depth. I also plan to learn Spanish too. Since I started watching your videos a week ago, my whole mindset was opened up to a plethora of new possibilities. I've been reading a lot of comments lately and I've noticed that many people have come to you after viewing Matt D'Avella, but personally, you were recommended to me first. I like him too, but you truly inspire me, you are unique. Thank you so much Nathaniel Drew.
I love this! I speak English, German and Dutch. Currently I’m learning Spanish. I’d also love to learn French, Russian and Mandarin. Learning a new language comprises so many cultural and social aspects. It’s not only about being able to understand and speak the language, but to connect with it on a deeper level. This connection establishes over time, but once you become fluent in a language you feel like you can understand more of the world and all of what there is to it. Language is not just language. There is so much more to it. And by being able to speak foreign languages, somehow, wherever you go and these languages are spoken, you feel at home. You are not alien to the country, people and culture, because language addresses them all. And that’s the beauty of learning a language. To learn about the world.
Great video!! When was in college, a professor wrote this on the chalkboard on the first day: "The limits of your language are the limits of your world." - Ludvig Wittgenstein This quote has stayed with me all my life, since then. English is my native language. I am pretty fluent in Spanish and I use it almost everyday, but mostly just with preschool children. I have also learned a little bit of French, Italian & German with college classes & immersion courses. I learned a tiny bit of Polish through Pimsleur about 15+ years ago and some of the sounds and words stayed with me throughout the years. Now I am learning Russian and Ukrainian (with a review of Polish and Italian). I have also sampled a few others, but just alphabet and words, like Hebrew & Greek. I don't think I'll ever stop learning languages! As a man in Greece once said to me about learning languages: "they are cheaper by the dozen"...he was SO RIGHT!!
I've been studying Japanese for the last few years, and although it's an unforgiving language for native English speakers such as myself to learn, I cannot wait to move to Japan next summer and begin to teach English. Your videos are always so uplifting. Thanks Nathan.
I love the way understanding different languages makes me feel. I'm amazed by the brain's capability to switch languages. I've realized that depending on the situation I'm thinking off, the language I use in my head changes. That feeling will never grow old.
Genial video! Cheers from Brussels!
I so agree when you say "go towards the things that interest and excite you." That's the key to learning, especially languages. It's such an incredible way to open up to new thoughts, opinions, ways of living... I think people just have to get past the intermediate level to really start to get to the best part of it.
Nathaniel I had no idea you were an exchange student with Rotary??!!! I lived in Italy in the year 17/18 and can honestly tell you it has completely changed my view of the world as well. Awesome video
Wooww, I relate to your story so much. My mom is from Mexico, and I spoke a lot of Spanish when I was a kid from spending time at my Abuelita's house, but like you, as I grew older I lost it. I can understand a fair amount but when it comes to speaking I was pretty awful. I've always felt like not knowing Spanish was keeping a barrier between me and my roots too. After school I spent a month in Spain, and my speaking ability improved SO much in that short time I was there. I'm back in the states now, still taking Spanish classes, constantly listening to music in Spanish, ((I've got Natalia Lafourcade & Vicente Garcia on loop)), & in general trying to immerse myself in spanish as much as I can in my free time. And you're so right, when you learn a new language, you can truly connect with people from different parts of the world a widen your perspective. Anyway, thank you so much for this video. It's always nice to know there are people out there I can relate to at least a little bit haha. I'm obsessed with learning languages ((including music, photography, coding, etc)) & traveling too. Sometimes I wonder if it's because I'm a huge introvert & somehow by learning all of these new languages I will be able to find & communicate with someone I truly feel connected to. But I tell myself it's because the world is full of treasures and the only way I will be able to discover them is by equipping myself with the necessary tools to set sail & explore ;)!! Ok maybe both! After Spanish, Portuguese, because Bossa Nova rules my world. OK YEA, thanks again, much love from Los Angeles!!
I'm Brazilian and I'm currently living in the French part of Switzerland. Quite ironically, the first video that brought me to this channel was the challenge you did to learn Italian and it just fascinated me as a language learner (I speak Portuguese, French, Spanish, English and I'm currently learning German for 2 months). Your videos gave me a lot of inspiration to try new things out and face life in a more courageous way, since I'm having many difficulties here. Thank you, Nathaniel! 🇨🇭🇧🇷
I'm native in English and Catalan, fluent in Spanish, conversational in French and know the basics of Japanese. I hope to improve my Japanese this year to reach a proper conversational level too. Learning languages opens us up to a whole new world, culture and a way of thought. I'm so lucky to speak so many, and honestly I can't imagine how different my world would be if I only spoke one!
Currently in Italy trying to learn the language and the culture. When I first arrived I only knew how to say basic words like “hello, goodbye, thank you” and 3 months later here I am being able to have conversations with people. Of course I’m no where near perfect and still have a long way to go but it’s just amazing how a new language can open up doors to connect with other people and understand their culture.
I totaly agree with you. Languages are a way of discovering new worlds, understanding and gaining new views. I was thinking about it today: you really learn a language when you conect with that in a sentimental level. It is not just bureaucratic comunication, you really need to achieve a level of empathy so you can understand a different point of view, a different reality, a different world! Congratulations for this video! It is one of my favourites
What you are describing about France mixed with the emotional depth you described about Argentina is what I am experiencing right now in Japan. Been living hear for half a year so far, I speak German, English and had Spanish in school (your accent was very hard on me, btw.) Japanese is just so fundemantally different from those European languages, it really blows my mind. It can't be compared. I came here and - despite having had Japanese classes before arriving here - felt like an illiterate. Learning it has been a blast so far, though. The way Japanese functions, the way you put out your ideas, the feelings and flow of the words and grammar... It's just magnificent. Reading a children's book right now (天空の城ラピュタという本). When I get back to Europe, I'm gonna invest more time in my Spanish skills again, thanks to you.

Drew’s video style is next level really. See you THINK you’ll be able to play it in the background and casually listen to it. Unfortunately if you do that you’ll miss all the images and shots he’s carefully placed for you. When you realized he’s done that it’s because he’ll switch to a language that you might not understand so you’re forced to read the subtitles. By then you become captivated by this beautiful image of a place, and then it’s like damn I missed out on like 75% of it... and then you play back the whole video. Masterful really! Love it!

I don't think I've ever agreed more with a video! In the past year or so I had the opportunity to travel from Switzerland (my home) to Vancouver, Canada and I was completely blown away by the incredible learning experiences that I encountered! I've met so many kind people that opened my eyes to a different way of living and thinking, and that changed my point of view in life. I feel that even though throwing yourself in a new city or country where you don't know anybody is extremely uncomfortable at first, you will most certainly end up with memories and life lessons that will last forever. I truly wish that everyone who has the opportunity to do such a thing will not give in to fear and make the most out of it because as he said in this video it is all worth it in the end!
I love listening to you speak in different languages after your background story, it put a smile on my face and it made me think that it is indeed possible for the rest of us! Very inspirational
I have been yearning to take my broken Kurdish and become fluent in my father’s Kurdish dialect called Sorani. The resources out there are very slim compared to other languages. It has been a struggle for me but I’m not giving up. Great video! Thanks for the inspiration!

“I can’t speak Spanish” Nathaniel Drew vlogging since age 9 lol. I can relate to this so much ! I was born in the Philippines and moved to Canada at 3 years old and now can’t speak (but understand) the language. Now I speak better Spanish than Tagalog (because my boyfriend is from Argentina hah and I also lived there) I think about this concept all the time! For example how in Spanish you can’t say “I’m late” you say “se me hizo tarde” which changes everything, even the way you see time. In English which is a very active language we are to blame for being late, in Spanish “you are made late” by what? Time passing? Lol doesn’t matter. Crazy how it totally changes perspectives. Ps caught that Argentinian accent jaja y el Freddo 😂😂
That reminds me, I was looking for anything on Swedish at the Chapters store just before Christmas, and they had nothing, but they had a couple books about Tagalog. I thought it was funny, but I guess Tagalog might be a bit more popular to learn, since most Swedes speak good enough English that tourists don't really need to bother learning Swedish.
Salut Nathaniel! Hello! 你好. I'm never one to comment but felt compelled to do so after watching this video, as well as several others of yours recently. You are breath of fresh air. Too many times our generation gets bashed as the lazy ones that don't want to work towards anything, but seeing someone like yourself, who's so dedicated, committed and mindful towards their work quite frankly, is inspiring. I'm by no means as gifted in the videography realm of things but I can relate in your language learning endeavors. I spent a year studying French Literature and Journalism in Paris and decided, what the hell, let's learn another and currently on my 2nd year living in China to become fluent in Mandarin. Countless times a year I hear close friends and loved ones tell me to just come home, throw in the towel and give up, but they'll never understand the opportunities that are bound to present themselves. Dedicating yourself to a new language takes commitment, hell, it takes a lot of humiliation and embarrassment, but I wouldn't have it any other way. After this year I'm hoping to pursue my Master's in Foreign Policy and every day, no matter how stressful, I remind myself how fortunate I am to have the privilege of moving across the world and opening my ears and eyes to a whole new experience. Your energy, your passion towards speaking about this truly makes me smile and for that I just wanted to say, thank you. Keep on inspiring those around you. You're doing incredible work and I'm certain it'll just continue to get better and better. Rooting for you man. Best, Just another language loving nerd. Haley
You inspired me to learn Spanish! And now I'm decent to almost kinda good at it! I met so many people online who speak Spanish and I made a lot of friends! A real door-opener. Next language I'll learn (when I'm fluent in Spanish) is Russian. I'm the mintgreenpaper guy on IG, btw. 😊
I'm so happy and excited to understand your video in English. I'm Brazilian, so I'm native Portuguese speaker and this is amazing! Thanks for all! The process of to learn a new language it's a big challenge, but will be worth it!
Bonne continuation ! (Hope you don't mind that I am writing in French...)
Language is so integral with thought/culture/music/food as you say. It allows you to see and understand things around you that single language people can not see or understand.
I agree 100% with your comment about how difficult it is to express how formative an RYE year is to those who haven’t experienced it. It’s a fundamental piece of how I view the world and approach so many aspects of my life still so many years later. RYE was the best decision I ever made. The way you speak about your year aligns so beautifully with how I feel about my experience.
Wow I am so impressed with how quickly you learned Italian and made friends. You are becoming a Renaissance man and the world is richer for your boundary crossing into many cultures.
Bro u give me a new sight to understand what language is , language is everything like coding , watching, photography, music etc. From now onwards I will try to see these things as language and make to think things interesting for me to understand them better
I had never heard an Argentine accent until I studied in Brasil this summer. The world opens itself when you learn it's languages! thank you for your video.

I’m learning French in high school anyway, but I realised about 2 months ago that I had to take matters in my own hands if I wanted to learn something. And now I’m grateful. Great video!
I'm learning Spanish right now because I'm trying to transfer to a university in Guadalajara to finish my degree. I used to study Japanese as a kid and dreamed and tried to study abroad in high school. I was very low income though, mentally unwell due to trauma, and Japan wouldn't take me unless I basically de-transitioned to go. I just found your channel and I love your videos and the messages you have for people. Your willingness to share. This is an older video but it just helped reinvigorate me for the hard journey of replacing all of my education and knowledge with the same but in another language- to make a leap towards the better future I've been carefully crafting for six years. Thank you for being you and making content.

Espero que tengas éxito con tus proyectos... y sí, el significado que para ti tenga esa palabra.
I’m glad my parents talked mostly in Russian with me at home. Honestly, they had no other choice because their German was far from good. Thanks to this I had no trouble learning my third language which is English.
It’s really true, switching languages changes the way we view the world... I feel the exact same thing having English as my second language. It’s amazing that you brought up grammar as well, I think it’s a very valid point.
It's funny because English, ie the language of this video, is a second language to most of us viewers anyway lol
Yep :D
haha.. how did you know?
Almost everyone in the us only knows English
Exactly! Hahahaah

I hope your family is alright! Sending love to all of Turkey and Syria... I hope YOU are alright!
I'm from Uruguay, and man, your spanish is stunning you even got the accent. I love it.

@@fahimmahmud7310 You've hit upon an interesting exception in the English language. Your reply was, "I'm, actually." We never use the contraction, in this instance. According to the rules, it's perfectly valid; yet we never express it that way. You can say, "I'm going to the store" or "I am going to the store." But when someone asks, "Are you there yet?" You never reply, "I'm." You have to say, "I am." But, and this is where it makes no sense, you can say "I'm not." LOL
Again, I do not mean this as a criticism but merely an observation about English that makes it difficult to learn. Good luck!

Also I just found your Me Llamo Nathan channel and it’s super useful as listening practice + your argentine accent is amazing!
i suggest you try an african language. the difference in thinking will blow your mind.
Watching shows and movies in Chinese would also be beneficial as it allows you to get a grasp and idea as to how the language is used and structured.

how well you speak those foreign languages was the motivation I didn’t know I needed

When was in college, a professor wrote this on the chalkboard on the first day:
"The limits of your language are the limits of your world." - Ludvig Wittgenstein
This quote has stayed with me all my life, since then.

I so agree when you say "go towards the things that interest and excite you." That's the key to learning, especially languages. It's such an incredible way to open up to new thoughts, opinions, ways of living... I think people just have to get past the intermediate level to really start to get to the best part of it.

What you are describing about France mixed with the emotional depth you described about Argentina is what I am experiencing right now in Japan. I think about this concept all the time!

This is an older video but it just helped reinvigorate me for the hard journey of replacing all of my education and knowledge with the same but in another language- to make a leap towards the better future I've been carefully crafting for six years. Thank you for being you and making content.
I took Arabic classess and could speak it when i was young but now i can barely speak it.

I'm in high school and I chose to study both French and Spanish. What is mentioned at 2:48 has been PLAGUING me for as I had a decent understanding of both the languages, I'm so glad I've found a RUclipsr I love being fascinated with something like this, and I completely agree! Learning a new language IS learning a new way to think!
I've NEVER heard of the french stereotype that people don't wash themselve 😂
guess he mixed it up with the Brits lol
Idk other places but in Mexico, a ton of people do say that french people smell pretty bad because they dont really bath daily haha
@@VibingTacos haha no all french people I know shower 2x daily
Yea no, believe me, people do say that. A lot of people told me the same thing hahah
What I heard is that they smell bad cause they don't use deodorant or something luke that lmao
Am I the only one who's literally falling in love with him? ):
Not at all!! 🙃🙃💕
