I’m a Brazilian and can say without a shadow of a doubt, you smashed it! Well done, it felt like you spoke the language for a couple of years at least. Parabéns cara!
"To me cagando real" foi assustadoramente brasileiro, hahahaha.

@@mariasinia8949 They think that he makes people think that learning languages is easy when it isnt. But I mean, everyone who watches the channel is a grown up and I believe that no one is being deceived. We all know that he speaks 3 other languages and that he probably have a lot more of free time than all of us who have regular jobs, and that that's make it easier for him, it's not like he's selling classes saying that he will teach us how to learn languages in a week... He's just sharing something he does coming from his own perspective and possibilities.
i don't think anybody actually hates HIM because of who he is at all. i love him and all his content very much, but I gotta admit it's just a little disingenuous and misleading to title your video "I learned Italian/Portuguese in 7 days" when, actually, the reality is that you "learned Italian/Portuguese FOR 7 days". He didn't come out of that week with a high enough level of fluency to be able to say that he's LEARNED it, especially in the italian one. then again, I appreciate his talent and hard work immensely and I think he's very inspirational. just... change the titles, mate.
@@Beatriz-hs8eu In addition to your points he is obviously gifted in his ability to learn languages. Others have other gifts and struggle with language. I have tried his strategies in a much more haphazard way and found them successful. However, it always breaks down for me at the point of the repetition/review needed. My bad, but I get so bored. Nathaniel manages to stay engaged somehow.
Honestly? You're killing it, man. As a Brazilian myself I could understand you from start to finish. You do have an accent, obviously, but hey, let me tell you something: do not ever lose that accent! It is part of who you are, and it shows people a bit of your story just from listening a few words coming from you! You're an inspiration! I'm definitely subscribing. Peace!

Hi, what tools do you use to practice a new language and meet new people. I was using the app Cake but people there don't take learning languages so seriously and search for almost everything but practicing languages.
@@chronos5457 I tried Tandem app. Everyone there is learning languages, so it's more of exchange (also expect to talks 50% of the time in your mother tongue)
Haha, exactly. He said it so clearly, I had never been able to hear it before now. Now I will finally stop cursing every time I want to go to the beach.
But you did super, super well! And you brought up interesting questions, instead of cliche stuff, which is always nice too! Also, don't get hung up on gender pronouns and so on, they come naturally, as well as the pronunciation (which is great for someone who learned it for a week, btw). It was an important reminder at the beginning of the video, for not giving up, but it's also important to note that you focused mainly on learning Portuguese for a burst of time, right? Most of us don't really get to do that, myself included, so of course results may vary; it's unfair to compare ourselves, given that fact (even otherwise: we all learn differently). Language learning is about consistency, of not really relying on immediate results as it is about believing that, over time, your results will accumulate into effective skill. I think it was Steve Kaufmann who said that you have to believe that what you're doing (in your language learning) matters, or else you'll always be thinking that "it's not worth it, no results are showing, why bother?". Change comes overtime, since learning a language is physiologically "sculpting" your brain. We don't train an entire day at the gym to gain muscle: that'd just destroy the muscles' fibers. "It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day. That's the hard part. But it does get easier."
I'm an American who's currently living in Brazil during this pandemic and these videos are heaven sent! Thank you for the encouragement, inspiration, and resources! Estou muito grato, obrigada!
As a brazilian, I can say that portuguese can be quite tricky sometimes, especialy for people who dont have a romanic language as native. But I am sure you can improve and achieve the fluency faster than you think :D
Hi Meg! I'm looking for a girl friend to practice english. Would you like to practice with each other? I live in Rio de Janeiro by the way, if you want to know what my accent is. 😊

Dear Nathaniel, I just wanted to say that because of the way you and other content creators make videos I've come to a realization. I need to start storytelling rather than making videos. It's amazing the content you create and I want to learn to be half the filmmaker that you are. Thanks, Demetri
hey i'm thinking about the same question as u do. cuz for me fashion content is so hard to be combined with story telling. i feel like 3 act story telling is easier in vlogs or those 30 days challenges thou. u have any thoughts about storytelling with combining with the business and niche side of youtube thou? cuz storytelling is so particular in film.
So true. I also think it's the fear of being laughed at. Or the method you are using scorned by native speakers. Or you aren't being taught the real language in use but the textbook variety and you always sounds stilted. Then there are those cultures which operate on shaming as pedagogy. When I started to learn Japanese that was the rule I wrote on the front page of my notes: I will not learn shame. (I haven't. Though I haven't learned Japanese either--just a few useful phrases.)
Cara, I started learning Portuguese about 3-4 months ago and I'm freakin' amazed how you could learn so much in one week, while I can't even form a correct sentence. 😅 You gave me a huge motivation to learn more and more!
Szabina Kalocsa hello! Are you from any Slavic country? I’m trying to learn polish and would like to know how hard it was transitioning from a Slavic language to a Latin language
Szabina Kalocsa very cool! I know a lot of metal bands from Hungary, your country really know how to do this! I have a question, Magyar is equal to say Hungarian?
I am a language teacher/ musician and animator (ex-opera singer), and I'm trying to set up a series of animations that follow this style of learning. While I have to follow the British curriculum at school... which is rubbish, I want to use this style of learning to motivate my students. Its fantastic to see someone so happy to learn languages.
Hi Bobby, genuine question here: Why do you think the British curriculum at school is rubbish? (I'm at a point of questioning our entire school system)
@@Johnnymagnet92 Oh dear, well here we go... Most countries have some form of national curriculum (Britain is one of them). But they vary in terms of prescription, (that is to say, how rigidly the teachers have to stick to what is provided) and formation (whether or not there was any democratic input in the creation of the curriculum, be it from teachers or education specialists). The British NC (national curriculum) still follows a narrowly prescribed system put mostly in place by 1 man, Michael Gove. He alienated his panel of curriculum experts by disregarding their advice, leading to their resignation, forming a dictatorship over British education while holding a powerful seat in the government. I want to point out at this point that Gove had quite an amity with Corporate Education giant PEARSON. It is normal to begin with broad educational aims (social, cultural, ethical etc) giving a sense of direction to what follows, and also to consider the aims of subjects. National Curriculum 2019 (NC19) has just two paragraphs 2.1 and 3.1, both extremely vague (‘spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development’ ; ‘prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life’; ‘essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens’ ‘appreciation of human creativity and achievement’). THAT IS ALL IT SAYS in a 800 page curriculum. We have disregarded any subject outside the big 3 ENGLISH, MATHS and SCIENCE. NC19 is dominated by 3 subjects English, Maths and Science - or rather 2½ since spoken English is almost absent. This can be seen in the pages for each: English 87, Maths 45, Science 32, Computing 2, Geography 3, MFL 1 (that is all languages) etc. Within English, spoken language has 2 pages, reading and writing 20 plus 25 for spelling and 18 pages of grammar and terminology. Drama has one paragraph, modern media has disappeared. Now this would be all well and good if the NC like in other countries was only a guideline, unfortunately we as british teachers have to stick to it like glue else be reprimanded and our students fall behind because they have to be taught to the exam. Basically students learn the answers to an exam, and never learn fundamentals of a subject. This inflates the national education score making our kids look intelligent understanding one or 2 high level topics within a subject. BUT they dont understand the basics meaning that they can never improve. Not only do we not teach the basics but we teach things (according to our curriculum) that are seriously incorrect. E.G. Me llamo Bobby = My name is Bobby only.... thats wrong... That is "I call myself Bobby" but we're not allowed to teach that, because if that's the answer they put in the exam they are marked down..... This happens across the board. I can give more but I need to take a deep breathe first. I hope this is an OK start to the answer you're looking for. P.s. look up last week tonight "Pearson" that's a whole other kettle of fish that both the US and UK have to face in education, never has so much corruption come between the ability for young and older minds to gain knowledge.
I want to just point out that anyone could complain about a system that is in place, but we have to remember that our biggest power is our ability to teach ourselves, I feel that is vital in a society where the things we may want to do in future may not even exist right now. Understanding the skills for learning, having a healthy mindset and being able to self motivate are the strongest abilities we can have in our arsenal. That's what I hope to help people develop as a teacher in my life time.
He was so hard on himself for that moment in the first 5 and a half minutes that he messed up a sentence but honestly that was so real and made me love this video. If he aced it all, even though in the beginning he said don't compare ourselves and just keep trying, I would have been more distraught/upset on how perfect he is. Him messing it up and having her reaction so nice and calm and encouraging has made me more encouraged to not give up on trying to learn Japanese.
I wanna learn Japanese as well... Been trying for a while but the writing and reading is so hard... Planning on going full talking first and slide in reading den writing later
Don't give up on Japanese. Its hard and annoying at times. Try to do something everyday (even if its 1 minute) and you will get there. Consistency in language learning is really important! Good Luck!

I’ve been pushing myself to study Italian and over the past few weeks I’ve learned more than years and years of French. I think the difference is that I chose to study Italian versus just being forced to pick one of three options in high school. I love the pursuit of language learning. Thank you for your guidance. I must go and communicate with other people. I’ve downloaded an app that allows this that I need to check out.
- Dark-Sky - It’s called Hello Talk, and I’m in the process of exploring it now. As of now I’ve seen there is a free version and a VIP version that costs money, like many other apps are structured. I put in all my info and proficiency level, and they gave me a long list of other members who are studying Italian/English. There is also a convo robot that you can start off with to ease you into the process. This is as far as I’ve gotten because I’ve felt like I needed to at least have decent level of fundamentals before I jump into conversation, but that’s kind of hard to measure, so I’m going to continue to check it out. But yea, I don’t have a recommendation for it yet as I’m just now digging into it, but it is something you can definitely explore to see if it meets up with your needs. :)

I'm a native Italian speaker and English teacher and I've had this desire to try and use the Internet to teach Italian and talk about language learning, one of my biggest passions) for quite a while, but I've always postponed it because I was not sure on how to start. I have to say that you motivated me to just start and see where it could go on the way, so I've been uploading videos on my channel for about a month now. I'm at around 1000 subscribers, which is amazing by itself but, more importantly, I feel like I'm doing something useful and using my passion to help other people. Something I've learned this year: "Done, not perfect." I'm a perfectionist and often wouldn't try or even attempt to begin a task if I didn't believe I could execute the task perfectly. Now, I have completed paintings, blankets, and many other things that turned out really beautifully and are much loved by the people that received them! I am learning old norse because I am a Norse descendant and I'm passionate about connecting to my ancestors. I wouldn't speak it out loud because I felt my accent was worse than a toddler's but now, I practice daily and am improving day by day. Your advice is really helping me learn the language and develop a far more inherent understanding of the words to the point of recognizing on sight and using without having to think what word it is I'm looking for. Thank you so much for sharing your learning style and techniques with us, it's extremely beneficial! Takk ok skál!

He's got such genuine and relatable content on his channel.
Exactly, like dude at least he's trying to learn a language and being honest about the proces.
Who hates him?
i don't think anybody actually hates HIM because of who he is at all. i love him and all his content very much, but I gotta admit it's just a little disingenuous and misleading to title your video "I learned Italian/Portuguese in 7 days" when, actually, the reality is that you "learned Italian/Portuguese FOR 7 days".

Most people feel ashamed of making mistakes while learning something new which is holding them back in that learning process..
I was like that when I was learning math with 20 years, get rid of that shame helped me so much!

So cool!
Hi Bobby, genuine question here: Why do you think the British curriculum at school is rubbish? (I'm at a point of questioning our entire school system)
Don’t worry American school system is worse
E.G. Me llamo Bobby = My name is Bobby
only....
thats wrong...
That is "I call myself Bobby"
but we're not allowed to teach that, because if that's the answer they put in the exam they are marked down.....
Finalmente chegou a hora de dizer:
PLEASE COME TO BRAZIL
It's about time, ain't it?
best situation to use that sentence :')
Good Luck!

There is also a convo robot that you can start off with to ease you into the process. This is as far as I’ve gotten because I’ve felt like I needed to at least have decent level of fundamentals before I jump into conversation, but that’s kind of hard to measure, so I’m going to continue to check it out.
Gostei mt ♥️
you're doing so good. Love from Portugal
verdade, muito bom pra pouco tempo
I'm crying, really!!I'm very shy when i have to talk in English, but you show me whatever, just speak and don't give up! man, please don't stop to make videos, I love it! God bless you!
He is so inspiring i have so much respect for him, he's the reason i'm starting to learn Spanish again!
Same thing for Mee
Puedes hacerlo 💪🏻
Vamooos💖 you can do it!
Que bueno Lewis! Mucha suerte amigo!
Lewis what do u speak?
@@lepeangel3700 just english and french (so far :P)
Funny watching this cuz I'm a native portuguese speaker hahah
Parabéns, e eu amei a iniciativa.
I was already subscribed but it's so cute watching it 💟
And SAUDADE....Omg what a super special word we have!! It's such a majestic word and means a lot but cannot be translated, not even to Spanish or french!
Também; é sempre bom ver outras pessoas falando a nossa língua.
Rapaz...
I'm so happy for him!
I love the way his friend corrects him but doesn't let him beat himself up for his mistakes. What a great friend and supportive tutor. I have to check out her material after this video.
just wow
I'm Brazilian, half Korean, and I've studying Korean for a year now (I didn't grow up in a proper Korean home cuz my parents divorced when I was really young), and I've been discovering how essential that is to my identity. when you're mix raced you're never complete, and that was even more prevalent for me as I never had much contact with my Korean side. but it is also so difficult, there are times I believe I'll never be able to speak properly, especially since korean has so many nuances, but this video and your experience actually make me want to try harder to get there. thanks for sharing this, I think loads of people who learn foreign languages do not realize how important it is to dive in the culture and the people, and your video portrays that perfectly.
mandou bem demais!!
yooooo that's crazy, i'm also half brazilian and half korean!! nice to meet ya
to tentando aprender portugues agora :-))) fully agree with everything you said
This conversation is bringing up emotions I haven’t felt before.
I have felt similiar way being the son of a Portuguese immigrants.
Out of fear I avoided learning, only picking up words here and there during my trips.
This conversation has brought up a shared courage from you guys to learn and embrace being a mix of identity, not being 100% Canadian or 100% Portuguese.
But I’d be happy to be both!
Thank you for this video!
KKKK! A Jo ensinando o cara... "como você tá?"
"Eu tô boa"
Hey, what does it mean when you say "kkkk" ? I saw many people say that ! :)
@@rfmilie It is like "LOL". It is the sound Brazilians make when laughing (=Kakaka).
RFMilie kkkkkkkkkkkkk = 😂😂😂😂😂😂
uahsuahusah pensei a mesma coisa
*Your ability to learn that fast is really incredible* 🙏
Who agrees?
@@adeniyisalami9416 ive seen your comment thousands of times. why??
Anyone can do this, that's the whole point of the video.
I'm native from Brazil and I can't believe how good this guy is in learning languages. I consider you like prodigy for speaking so many words in portuguese, you portuguese is amazing
I love it!! Parabéns você é nota 10 cara!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I work with a nonprofit in Honduras and have been trying to learn Spanish for about two years. I get so self-critical when I am speaking. It helps so much to have someone validate the common human experience of learning a new language...entonces, muchas gracias Nathaniel.
I love the fact that between Romance languages we can understand each other! I’m a Spanish speaker and understood pretty much 95% of this conversation with no subtitles, and I’m pretty sure that for Brazilians,Portuguese and Italians (maybe even French and Romanian) it’s the same!
Intentaré aprender otro idioma con este método! Saludos a todos!
how is the process going?
In only 7 days man u the best, I'm a Portuguese native.
I love that she helps correct your pronunciation, that's a good friend right there.
"Nossa senhora!" ahahaaajahahaahah! Yeah I know precisely that feeling! ahahajahah
i feel like fashion and storytelling is so hard to combine though... ur story telling skills and the way u approach and package ur way is so special
It's so touching this evolution. I got very emotional with this connection. You will love speak Portuguese because you will meet very warm people around the globe. Parabéns, amigo. Visita Lisboa 😃
I found this video so inspiring and I want to try this with Spanish. I've just found your channel and it's so amazing:)
thank you for sharing your experiences, I want to learn how to convey my thoughts with the same level of eloquence as you in my videos
I’m in the same boat as you haha my family speaks Spanish and I probably know around 700 words or so but I don’t speak well. I’m gonna do the same thing and learn.
You'd be entering an amazing world. Spanish is beautiful language!
I'm from Argentina, so I'm a native Spanish speaker. If someone needs to practice their spanish, I would love to help!
by the way I need to practice my english so it would be reciprocal!
