I ended up filling it with marine gear oil i know its not recommended. Had it since 2018 and no leaks or problems . Do about 100+ miles a year on it but i would like to get the weedless upgrade for it someday. great yak .

The upper and lower? Won't the oil in the upper just go down the shaft completely filling the lower unit with oil?

Hello. I’m a lubrication specialist and a millwright for US steel. So I know gears and lube. So there’s absolutely nothing special about finish line grease. Literally any good marine or white lithium grease is fine. No water get in the drive anyway. But there’s tons of good options at your local stores. We pay a lot for these kayaks and I think it’s poor service just because you have some deal with finish line or something you would actually void our warranty for not using it is just horrible.

Thank you for your observations and comments. Finish Line is a grease we found works on our gears, so we apply this particular grease to our gears during assembly. In an effort to keep maintenance simple, we are recommending that customers use the same grease. Our understanding is that it can be a mistake to mix greases on the gear because it can lead to a breakdown of the gear surface. To change the grease brand would mean that customers would have to completely remove the original grease off of the gears prior to applying a new brand.
We do offer Finish Line grease on our website as a convenience for our customers since we recommend use of this product.
This is simply an effort to keep maintenance requirements clear and simple.
