The Bond of my youth...Not dark but with humor, pretty girls, topp locations and he never dies. You left the theatre with a smile. And you like to watch it again from time to time.
Roger More was my childhood bond too, even though I grew up in the 90s. They were just always on TV maybe more family friendly than the Dalton ones. The films for me were just pure escapism, real stunts, fabulous music.
Well, there are 20 Bond films before the Craig era to satisfy those cravings for you. But in the modern era of filmmaking, you need to challenge the status quo, which is what the Craig films ended up doing for the IP.
Defintitely one of Roger Moores best Bond outings, the fantastic opening sequence, Lotus Esprit, the beautiful Barbara Bach,Jaws, the submarines,it had the lot! One of the best Bond films ever!
Ooh. I think Man with Golden Gun and Live and Let Die are FAR superior. This one reminds me of You Only Live Twice; a big spectable with enormous sets, but very little substance, in my humble opinion.
The Bond villian of your youth Jeff, is Richard Keil as Jaws. He not only appeared in this 1977 film, He also appeared in another, the 1979 hit, "Moonraker".
Normajean McCracken Yep! That's true - too bad he didn't play in other 007 films any more but unfortunately he was lost in space with his strange girl-friend! And they lived happily ever after among the stars! :-)
And Elvis saw this before passing away, AWESOME!!!!!!!! P.S.-He tried to get a private screening of Stars Wars for his daughter, I'm not completely sure of the facts, but HE DID get to see this great movie just days before he passed away with Lisa-Marie and his fiance, Ginger Alden.
Yep. Spot on. Best Bond with the best Bond girl against the best villain with the best henchman in the best story and the best song (although Live and Let Die theme is cool too). Only Goldfinger can match this. But my favourite Bond film ever.
I sort of feel all the big sets and stunts and gadgets became more important than the story and characters. His car turning into a submarine, people would be laughing in their seats if that happens in the latest Bond film. A film like From Russia with Love never tried to make him superman, it was a more grounded film with realistic settings. The bad guy and his plan is silly to say the least and it asks us to believe he's got hundreds of people to just go along with it.
Craig actually looks capable of doing some of the stuff the script needs Bond to do like chucking men around. The James Bond of the books wasn't just someone who seduced women and made wise cracking one liners everytime he killed a baddie. Moore though had real charm and a sense of fun. You got the feeling it might be fun to be Bond which I lost with Craig.
As someone who saw this in the theater as a kid, just bought all 27 Bond movies on Blu Ray and is watching them in order one per day for February (and who did this 25 years ago), this one is so clearly the best. Best opening song (Carly Simon), best car (turns into a sub), best Bond girl (Barbara Bach who married a Beatle), best Bond villain (Stronberg who feeds people to the sharks), best Bond henchmen (Jaws), most romantic Bond movie (so girls will enjoy it on a date), best Q gadget scene, best silhouette dancing intro (with the naked girls and acrobats on guns). Possibly better than Star Wars that was at the theater at the same time. Glory days!
I love this film, but if this was better than Star Wars at the time, then they would never have been pressured to make Moonraker as the follow-up Bond film.
Moore was the best bond and this movie is the best James Bond movie. The coolest, most high-tech cars, underwater, famous JAWS, russian spy who you killed her husband, famous skiing chase, submarine! IT HAS EVERYTHING.
Roger Moore gets a lot of grief for being the “campy”Bond, but he’s my 3rd Fav.This is a Top 5-10 Bond Movie.Even with the Underwater Car.He was awesome in it,and it had a great opening scene,Great Soundtrack,Beautiful Barbara Bach,Jaws and Great Locations.Stanley Kubrick Shot the interior shots with the Submarines.James Mason was supposed to play Stromburg. This and “For Your Eyes Only” were(IMO) his 2 best.
I love the Craig films but I consider them separately as they're made in a completely different era of movie making with CGI and all. Spy was the first bond movie I got to see in the movie theater and it will always be my favorite,I was 15 and I saw it 3 times.opening scene was epic! And the theme song is my favorite .
My fav jb film saw this with my dad in the cinema originally and many times since on tv and video. Perfect mix of action humour and barbera bach was an absolute stunner.
Elvis Presley saw this movie on Wednesday, August 10, 1977, during a special viewing at the General Cinema in Whitehaven, Tennessee. It was the last movie he saw, as he died six days later on Tuesday, August 16, 1977, at the age of 42.
He was good but he did too many movies. Even Sean Connery warned the people behind the movies that once the actor playing Bond became a certain age they should retire from the role. Roger Moore should have listened, A View to a Kill is a good example.
same here, i think its a age thing, i was born in 1974 so when growing up roger moore was bond. also i think roger moores bond was a little bit lighter than sean cpnnerys bond, connery was more of a tough bond moore was more of a funny charming bond.
+Jeff Peake Calling this the best Bond film is a perfectly reasonable claim. I don't agree (it's isn't even my favorite Moore flick), but I can see why others love it.
***** I think it's unfair to Moore to blame him for turning it into parody instead of, say, You Only Live Twice or Thunderball (two of my favorites, btw). Even Diamonds Are Forever (which I also enjoy) went further into parody and absurdity than anything Moore had done save for Moonraker. That's not to mention 3/4 of the Brosnan era, which (unlike the Moore films) were not only not very good, they also weren't very entertaining. Moore was a good Bond. It's unfortunate to see him hated on in the days where everything has to be dark.

just seen the latest bond trailer ("time to die again" or something??) and wanted to remind myself how i thought they were meant be.. moore for bond.. x
I hope with the next Bond after Daniel Craig, they start by actually attempting to film Fleming's book of The Spy Who Loved Me. It was my favourite when I read all the Bond books in my youth, and has absolutely nothing to do with this version. I'm not complaining about the movie, but seeing as the story in the Fleming novel is so different and intense, I think it would be an excellent introduction to a new Bond (especially because James himself doesn't appear until over halfway through the book).
Roger Moore playing his Bond type Character in "Cannonball Run" was hilarious. Says he was in the "Fly Who Bugged Me". An example of his sense of dry wit humor. Nobody did it better!
My thoughts exactly Josh23761. There were seven Bond pictures (1973-1985), all starring Roger Moore as James Bond 007. And his third, the 1977 picture, "The Spy Who Loved Me", was one of them!
Good plot, great action sequences and Barbara Bach was hot. As Carly Simon said in the song>>>nobody does it better. It wasn't too long ago that the car that was used in this film was found sitting derelict in a New York warehouse. I hope it's now in loving care and being restored to its glory.

All Bond films with the exception of Craig's and GoldenEye and On Her Majesty's Secret Service are cartoons. Sean Connery's Bond was a woman beater
