  • South-East governors and stakeholders have announced plans to engage with the federal government for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, currently facing trial on terrorism charges, expressed willingness to negotiate an out-of-court settlement with the Nigerian Government. His lawyer informed the Federal High Court in Abuja, but the federal counsel advised approaching the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) for negotiations.
A group of 50 federal lawmakers appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure Kanu’s release and initiate a peace process for the Southeast. Presidential candidate Peter Obi supported these calls, emphasizing the importance of rule of law and peace.
Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam endorsed Kanu's move for an out-of-court settlement, viewing it as a strategic decision rather than cowardice. He suggested Kanu sign a peace bond if released. Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s spokesperson, Alex Ogbonnia, advocated for a political solution, noting that Kanu's release could reduce insecurity in the Southeast.
Conversely, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) believes Kanu's fate should be decided by the courts based on evidence. The group also urged constitutional amendments for self-determination, expressing concerns over criminal activities overtaking legitimate agitations in the Southeast.
