  • Kenyan police have arrested over 270 individuals during antigovernment rallies, accusing them of engaging in criminal activities under the guise of protesting. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that 204 suspects were detained in Nairobi and 68 in other regions. Authorities are using CCTV and mobile recordings to track additional suspects involved in theft and property destruction.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki condemned the protests as violent and promised government action against criminal gangs. Riot police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Nairobi and other areas following violent clashes that previously resulted in at least two dozen deaths.
The protests initially targeted a finance bill with new taxes but have since expanded to demand President William Ruto’s resignation, using the hashtag “RutoMustGo.” The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 39 deaths and 361 injuries over two weeks of rallies, criticizing the excessive force used by police.
Activists argue that the violence was instigated by government infiltrators to discredit their movement. Despite this, further protests are planned for Thursday and Sunday.
