This guy was no normal Pro. Hajin Lee is a normal Pro....and Batts lost to her with a reverse komi. This Guy Choi Cheolhan has 14 Domestic Titles, 2 International Cup wins, and a Continental. He was #3 in the world one year, and has only recently slipped to 40th.
Choi Cheolhan is a level 30 Arch-Devil with unlimited wish spells and symbol of Hopelessness 2X day as a 30th level Magic user.
You can have all the Joseki Armor, and all the opening theory magic items you want, you'll still die when he summons 4 Level 15 barbed devils with 80% damage reduction. They will Claw, Claw, bite, and stab your groups to death.

It's awesome watching you talk yourself into, despite your instinct, doing all the things that Choi Cheolhan pointed out as your mistakes in his review. "The aji here is how we're currently set to not be alive anymore." Classic.

One thing I remember from the old days when Shygost used to do lessons on KGS, is that he said something along the lines of
"What made me really break through to 6 dan was when I realized I didn't have to do anything special".
I think that compliments really well what happened with respect to when you second guessed your basic instinct because you thought you had to achieve more.
Apart from that, what we see here is also the different dynamic that starts to appear in a 'match setting' such as tournament games etc. - since you primarily play games online, you have less experience with that kind of pressure, and that will cause mistakes - totally understandable. I think the pincer in the upper right where you were almost surprised at your own move shows that well :-)
I would also like to commend Dwyrin for an excellent use AI-review. Not nitpicking over every single detail, exploring selective variations that you are in doubt about, and exploring which variations lead to complications and which do not. Instead finding what you thought were important points that turned the flow of the game. That was really nice :-)

This is great: I just watched this game first on Yoon's Baduk Cafe, and took in her commentary. Then, I came here and watched your remarks. To see the pro analysis and then your own real-time thought process was just fantastic! And, for a bonus, it was played on my birthday! I guess 2020 was good for something. Right?

I'm glad you got the opportunity to play the poisonous snake! Unfortunately this gives off the vibe as if the information flow and review situation were handled a little poorly on Mrs. Young-Sun 8ps behalf. As somebody who met her personally and got to know her as a very positive person I hope that despite this it was a great experience for you! Thanks for making these inspirational videos for the rest of us. :)

Dwyrin, I saw you play against Haylee (4p) an even game and you almost won the game! Is Cho Cheholyan so much stronger? He had 4 of your groups running for life and captured two of them. Amazing.
The most interesting part of the analysis was at time 1:18:00 on your video. You thought that your stones would be killed if white jumps down. But incredibly as you showed black can counter cut and start a capturing race on the other side. That shows how deep the game of Go is.

This match reminded me so much of another match you played against a professional on tygem a few years ago. Better said the rematch against him after you knew he was a pro. There was so much fear of making a mistake, so much second guessing. I'm pretty sure you would have crushed him with a slightly different setup:
Some internet guy: let's play, I give you 20 points komi.
Dwyrin: wtf, I'll teach you some basics.
Ok, maybe not, but your analysis showed that you can play stronger if you're just yourself. Still entertaining and thanks a lot for all the great stuff you produce. Just love it!

Choi did think you were passive. I watched Yoon's review. Now that I'm watching this...I think he was right. It felt like you were hesitant. You knew what he was going to do and second guessed and play elsewhere only for him to play the move you said he would. Still entertaining... even though you ended up with more than 2 weak groups lol.

I love that the two space corner enclosure is popular these days thanks to the computer. Ten years ago when I started playing I would play both corners with the two space as black. It just looked good to me. I would try and build a frame work from that. I liked it for its flexibility for giving territory or influence depending on what the opponent does. Now that I’m getting back in to go I see how doing it twice was too slow but it’s definitely my favourite opening.

  • @JohnLewis-old

The intimidation is hard to deal with. You can't just do what feels right and that's a power that fear creates not just in Go, but in life. Do what you think is best and deal with it. The worst case is you learn, the best case is that you make the right move!
It's actually pretty cool that you lasted a long time, but the way you played wasn't to win, it was to survive, which we know leads to defeat. *Your analysis should teach you this, if nothing else.*

I LOVE your videos. Much respect. I do have a bit of (hopefully) constructive criticism. It would be IMMENSELY helpful if you avoided frequently saying "here/there/this/that/etc." during reviews. It's a problem during any review. But the vagueness was exponentially compounded by the use of AI during this review. So naming the location of the move(s) you're referencing would be great. (Ex. "If I play at X then Y could happen; if I play at A then B could happen.) Or you could use the drawing tool. I find that helpful in-game and believe it would be even more useful during reviews. Thanks again, sir. You've helped me improve my game significantly. I look forward to many years of additional great content from you

Have you seen Chelhon's generous review yet?
He praised your opening, and said some nice things about your game. Also-- he suggested a running fight in response to the pincer up top. Chase white into the center and ruin the building on that side instead of taking the stupid corner.
Also, he agreed that the L5 move was the nail in your coffin. When you tenuki to play the left side, your direction of play and urgent move assessment was way off.
His review was awesome, I think You'll get a lot from it. His big suggestion is that it should have been a 3-4 stone handicap game to set up more complex fighting and thus benefit your viewers. With a larger lead in stones, you could have responded to him aggressively and thus taught fighting. He wanted you to have played handicap to fight harder, and not be as passive as you were.

Unless Choi would have messed up somewhere, he would have won anyways, because minor mistakes like the hane on the right side add up in the end(game) and top pros with such an amount of experience can punish and execute it.
But I think the real mistake was the over extension at K4. Because of that he really could take advantage of the cutting point at P13 ( ? coords are messed up, but its obvious which I mean), especially because you ignored the 2 stones on top. You basically added another weakness there and yeah, we know how it ended. ^^ Tenuking at the left side at C8 was just the nail in the coffin then.
I actually wonder why you played that way. Imo your playstyle is to build a strong foundation in the beginning, so your opponents fall behind, they overplay and you have a higher chance of winning a fight, because they are overplaying and you are not. Well, it was a tough game anyways because Choi played light shapes with his stones on the right and top side, which are hard to attack and imo his only weakness was the lower left at F16. But because of mentioned K4 you never got the chance to exploit it.
You basically played like you want your opponents to play against you. :> I really wished you hadnt played there. :)
    But was fun to watch.

WARNING: POTENTIALLY CONTENTIOUS ADVICE (BUT NOT TRYING TO START ARGUMENT)
I believe you should play the board, not the opponent. Only moves change the distribution of points across the board. Neither komi nor your opponent’s identity affect the board in any way. Therefore, I believe the best move is one that takes only the board into account.*
I admit that various constraints make this ideal impossible. As you said in your intro, there were moves you wanted to try that you avoided because you had to keep the audience in mind. There are also going to be situations where you cannot think long enough or read deep enough, so you are forced to take your best chance given uncertainty. But aren’t there enough times that one makes a mistake convinced he is right that backing away what looks right but difficult that he stands to lose what he hoped to retain anyway?
I personally expect to learn more from games with honest mistakes than from games where I knowingly tried to take too much or too little due to emotional influences. Bad habits or misunderstandings can be corrected when discovered. I fear hiding these problems by choosing to stray from the best path.
In one of my favorite speeches in literature, Captain Dimak said, “Be brave, all of you, like Nero Boulanger, and when you have a thought of such surpassing ignorance that you think it's actually smart, make sure to make some noise, to let your mental limitations squeak out some whimpering fart of a thought, so that you have a chance to learn” (Orion Scott Card’s Ender’s Shadow). Perhaps I try to twist the thought too far, but here I think this applies to how to play Go.
    * Technically, the counting rules and ko rule used also affect this as well. I can be pedantic, too.

    • @gamecoder0
      @gamecoder0 4 года назад

@@IcyTorment I firmly disagree, which is why I warned that my position might be contentious. Winning probability is a crutch that attempts to account for the fact that both players will make mistakes. Whether a move is a mistake or not is actually determined by whether there is a refutation that will cost that player points. The best move on the board is the minimax move: that which results in the player having exactly as many points as he could take without refutation. Komi has no impact on this. The best move is likely impossible even for future AIs, and therefore an unrealistic ideal, but I believe that stopping short of trying to find the best move is being slack in trying to get stronger.

If regular komi is half a move, then the komi for this game is only 1.5 moves (approximately). That's three weak moves you get to play, after which white is even/ahead. I was surprised to see you go for influence against a superior opponent, since it is easier to make territory along the wall than get influence and then get territory nearer the center. Getting immediate territory is almost never a mistake, right?
I wanted to see you just defend your bottom right corner, defend your right side, and then 3-3 the top left corner ASAP. You could have reduced his influence over the center after these fights. It seemed like you were intimidated into looking for bigger moves than what is actually safe to play... which led to you being cut, poked, and reduced everywhere. The reduction of your bottom side territory was severe.

Dwyrin's advantage in this game was 27 points. (20.5 reverse komi + not giving 6.5 komi with black.)
Assuming fair komi is 7 points (and one full move is 14 points) his advantage was basically 2 full moves. If he made two completely useless moves the game would become even. However, at 6 dan level, it is very hard to make moves that are completely useless. So it might have taken quite a few more weak moves to make the game even.
