  • Another jewel on the New Mexico landscape. See the natural caves of Cliff Dweller Canyon ... People of the Upper Gila River - the Mogollon culture, which thrived from the 1270s to around 1300 and then disappeared. Walk the trail to the caves followed by a tour of the ruins.

I have been there since the late 1950s on and off till the early 1980s. You used to ford the creek, no hand rails of any kind. The visitor center was a park service trailer and his and hers out houses.

The early shot of the dwellings, when they first come into view, sent a chill down my spine. The 2 caves seen at that moment, with their rock-wall surroundings, give the appearance of a giant peering over the treetops at unwelcome, uninvited strangers, as if they're encroaching upon the secret, forbidden preserve of a prehistoric god. So eerie, the music contributing to this effect. Staggering to imagine how these mysterious, awesome dwellings were built by the humans of that long-ago time. Clearly, they were extremely smart; after all, some among them had to conceive, plan out the logistics, supervise the work, & get them built. Only inspired leadership & cohesive teamwork could've accomplished this. Lessons for today? I believe so. What were the purposes for such a monumental undertaking---and why did they leave? So many questions yet to be answered---and asked. I greatly hope I can visit there someday---if I don't upset that ancient giant I imagined, protecting his domain!

I would love to find a far off secret canyon and make it my secret camp site.. (While respecting the ruins of course).

I lived close to there. I was there three times. It's beautiful, but every time I was there I saw a rattle snake.

Way back in the late 70's my little sister walked the entire cliff dwelling right up to the ladder then sat down and screamed bloody murder- in the late 90's my second child did the exact same thing in theexact same spot!

From one who's never been there, thank you very much for the video. Those cliff dwellings are wonderful and amazing in so many ways. So many questions come to mind just seeing them through your eyes. Thanks again.

The cliff dwellers must have really disliked the valley dwellers to carry all the rocks into the cliffs. Wonderful soundtrack!

The type of wall construction is similar to that at Chaco Nat. Mount. but unlike the Pueblo Indian structures which were made of mud bricks.

I can't help to think that it ended badly for the original peoples of these dwellings (of course I wouldn't really know) it's just the vibe I get. These structures were already long abandoned before the Old West expansion.

I have been to Sandia Man Cave and to Bandelier National Monument, sandia cave is natural but Bandelier Nat. Monument was built on the side of cliffs. These place along with the ruins of Gila tells us these were defensive locations. There enemies left no ruins and may have migrated out or were only passing through. Sandia man cave 8 to 12 thousand years. Ago.Gila and Bandelier ruins were inhabited 8 to 1200 hundred yrs ago,all for defensive purpose!

Careful application of music....... drama de luxe ...
Amazing places to live, all the raw material right on the site to make these rock buildings and walls. think of generations, weathering the elements in these crude masonry buildings.
Living and raising children in these hostile environments and even making a pic-nic out of it, a way of life
