Thank you for a wonderful trip...home. I'm a New Mexican now physically living in Virginia, but my heart and sole resides in the canyons of that land of enchantment...forever.
Thank you, that was very informative and well done! We are planning a 4 day trip to New Mexico soon, and we will definitely work this into our itinerary!
If you possibly can... go to the Carlsbad Caverns (Southeastern New Mexico)... If you want Mountains... Ruidoso New Mexico (Skiing in the Winter too) Horse Racing in the summer...
If you read back you will find that it was originally cut for the rail line not a road Logs were taken from one of the main logging camps to the mill in Bernalillo That mill eventually burned to the ground Also most do not know this but there were 3 tunnels originally 1 of course collapsed. After many years the rail was taken out and New Mexico timber used over sized log trucks to transport the logs to the Gilman mill As a kid I was lucky enough to live in the Gilman logging camp and spend summers in the high mountains with my grandparents My grandpa worked for the timber company most of his entire life He started as a kid getting water to the steam donkeys that were used in the building of the tunnels
Thanks for description in your video all others I've watched didn't do that & if you want to visit be nice to know what your facing if you're in RV might be different route or drive something different.
Many memories from this area. Just past the tunnel on the East side of the canyon there Pennsylvanian age rocks with abundant fossils (including the only Penn age Trilobite I've ever seen). Also is a fault that puts Penn aged rocks in direct contact with 1.6 billion year-old granite-you can cover the fault with your finger...a billion year gap covered by your finger.

One correction: The Santa Fe & Northwestern was standard gauge; not narrow gauge.
