Jesus vs Star Wars (J Warner Wallace "Person of Interest" Response)

- Опубликовано: 24 июл 2024
- Suppose none of the New Testament survived to this day. Would we know anything about Jesus and his teachings? Cold-Case Homicide Detective J. Warner Wallace joins Dr Frank Turek and Dr Sean McDowell to show you how. Drawing from his new book, Person of Interest, Wallace shows the unparalleled impact Jesus has had on culture in six different areas: literature, art, science, music, education, and even other world religions.
But what does that actually prove? What if every copy of Star Wars were to be destroyed? Could we recreate the classic movie without using any footage from Lucasfilm? Could we reproduce the story from literature, art, science, music or education?
Popularity isn't divinity.

I love the irony of the guy calling himself a great detective immediately jumping to conclusions about a fingerprint belonging to the criminal rather than anyone else
Adam S
My thoughts exactly. It made me wonder how many innocent people he helped send to prison based on this terrible detective work.
Especially given he explains how the same is not true for a button.
Honestly I'm becoming very skeptical of his alleged past as a detective. I suspect a lot of embellishments were added to that story of his.
@@lucofparis4819 His Wikipedia page reads as if it was copied from his website or a book jacket; I have no idea how much of it is true. The more I think about it you could use Mormonism as an example of how people are willing to die for something false (which is what most Christian consider this religion to be) as Joseph did, according to the most common version of the story given at least, and years later there's millions of people still following this. At least this serves as a counterargument against the idea that the first Christians weren't willing to die for something they made up.
But of course most Christians will just say Joe was obviously a false prophet and everyone who believed him was a dupe while refusing to consider it could be possible to argue the same for Jesus, if he did exist.
Paulogia's Star Wars supercut proved to me that I've watched WAY too many cartoons in my lifetime 👍👍👍

So Mr. Forensics thinks that it's extremely unlikely that people who lived next to the major trading hub of Egypt knew basic Egyptian mythology?
Considering that many of his xtian audience never read their bible... yes.
They certainly wanted to align themselves somehow to what was considered an ancient great civilisation even then.
It's an even dumber statement since during Hellenistic times, Greek and Egyptian mythology got kind of fused to the point that some of the deities were considered to be more or less the same, and there were temples to both throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.
I'm just imagining Yeshua wandering around in a T-shirt that says "My people were allegedly enslaved by the Egyptians for centuries and all we got was this T-shirt."
@@robertdullnig3625 Kind of like how all the gods were considered to be fused with the Mesopotamian Anunnaki at that point in the ancient forms of monomythicism, especially when it came to carrying the most mainstream forms of astrology over from culture to culture, and how there's seemingly more direct lines of descent such as the Phonecian Ba'alim becoming the Greco-Roman Pantheon and the Mesopotamian Anunnaki & Igigi becoming the Biblical God and angels.

"Why didn't this happen under Buddha?"
But didn't it basically happen under Buddha? Have you even seen any Asian cultures and how Buddhism has shaped many of the same aspects of culture that Jesus has in the west? Literature, art, music, themes for plays, movies and so on.
It's all there.
Like, they recently rereleased an HD remaster of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has multiple dungeons heavily based on Buddhism, even discounting all the reincarnation that the series eventually became based on (though, oddly enough, the series was originally supposed to have a lot more Christian symbolism).
And how both Christianity and Buddhism trace their existences back to the two oldest known major religions (Sumerian Paganism and Hinduism respectively)?
And the list goes on...
Apologists don't look at or care about other cultures. They prefer ignorance, hence why they are Christians.
It happened even with the Roman Greek pantheon. Referencing the classics has gone out of fashion in the last decades but have a look at a history of art book. Western art is full of depictions of Greek and Roman gods and episodes of their myths, not to mention the neo classic architecture. Same with literature. Dark Matter 2525 has an excellent video that debunks the myth of the “Judeo-Christian values”.
@@pansepot1490 Heck, American government is based way more on Iroquois and Hellenistic systems than the theocracies and monarchies described in any of the Abrahamic traditions. And going back to pop culture, Percy Jackson, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Saint Seiya, Wonder Woman, Fenyx: Immortals Rising, Hades, etc... draw heavily upon Hellenistic mythologies.

They ask, why didn't this happen under Buddha or Krishna? Are they kidding??? Just as Western culture had the influence of believers in art and music, plus the impact of the early churches literally putting Bible stories into art for the followers who could not read and had no access to books, Eastern culture had a similar impact from the likes of Krishna and Buddha. Their stories are in dance, songs, oral traditions, and paintings galore. Everywhere from beautiful temples with intricate carvings in an array of bright colors to obscure cave paintings exist across a vast territory. Holy places. Holidays that encompass the entire East. There are modern tellings of their stories in movies, TV shows, and plays. Even in the West we can now find Hindu and Buddhist temples. Their practises and beliefs permeate modern, Western spiritual beliefs. I have Buddhist and Hindu holidays printed on my American-made calendar.

"Journey to the West" is an inspiration for DragonBall. I'm genuinely unaware of JTTW deep cultural origins, but it's definitely deeply Buddhist inspired. Sometimes I really fear the U.S. education system has badly failed us.
@@MichaelDeHaven Yeah, Journey to the West is very strongly Buddhism-inspired (up to and including some clandestine digs at the other major faiths of China, particularly Taoism and Confucianism), and it's widely recognized as one of the great classics of Chinese literature and continues to be referenced and riffed upon to this day.
It's still done to this day, too.
For example, the manga Saint Young Men is about Jesus and Buddha as tourists in Japan. It's absolutely hilarious and I love it to bits.
Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) is an ongoing manga with such heavily Buddhist visuals and themes that the translation often has to point out some to the non-Japanese readership (which was why I am reading in it English, these days I mostly only read manga in the original but I felt I'd profit more from this one in translation given the Buddhist vocabulary as well as the gem related terms).
These are just two examples, picked at random, that I happen to be familiar with. There are a lot more to be found.
"Spaceballs!" .. there goes the planet"
Love it. Geeked out hard when I first learned you worked on the prequels. I know, I know, they're not the originals but I wasn't alive when the originals came out and I had so much fun pretending to be a pod racer as a kid.
We sound about the same age, and star wars was hype AF and introduced me into the world of cosplay and uber-fandom. "Not as good" as the original doesn't mean they weren't still great and a huge milestone of our collective childhood (the "jar jar is a sith" headcanon helps make the second much more tolerable lmao)
The prequels are my favourite because I was a kid when they came out.
The same goes for the originals and sequels for other people, because if we actually evaluate these films, they're all pretty bad. Apart from the prequels because they're my favourite.
@@davidgriffin9247 I'm 33. I was 11 when episode 1 came out.
I'm happy to hear you say that. I did the same thing back in the early 80s when I was a kid and I wasn't sure the new movies were as loved as much as I love the originals. I think it's awesome that you look at those movies as the first movies because technically they are.
I'm not sure you should be boasting about being able to get a conviction without knowing how the suspect killed the victim or how they disposed of the body. You may be right some of the time, but it's also not that uncommon for people convicted to be later proven innocent.
Also, as a detective, it's not really his job. (As far as I know)
His job would be to investigate and deliver his findings to a lawyer, who then convinces the judge and/or jury.
I'm starting to suspect the only law enforcement JWW ever worked for was a posse collected by the honorable Judge Lynch.
I was thinking the same thing... I didn't have any evidence! I didn't have a body or a motive or even a crime really! But I know how to work the jury!... Lol.. scary
This doesn't convince me that Jesus was a real person
It does convince me that some of the convictions he achieved should be reopened.
Don't know, but the way he talks about it make me dubious of his efforts.
If Wallace did his policework the way he describes it as how he does apologetics today, he and our Vice President are the poster children for #ACAB.
You know what the funniest thing is? Proving Jesus was a real person is not enough. If Jesus was simple some doomsday prophet spouting nonsense in the middle of nowhere two thousand years ago, no one would have that much of a reason to particularly care about what he might've said.
In order to validate Christianity, you'd need to prove that Jesus was the son of God and had superpowers, and *nothing short of that* will ever suffice.

Below is akin to a “fallout” fallacy (one of the most common deductive errors people make):
P1) If I drop the egg, it will break
P2) The egg is broken.
C) Therefore, I dropped it.
P1) If the power if off, then the light won’t come on.
P2) The light didn’t come on.
C) Therefore, the power if off.
Is the above good thinking? No. Why? There is more than one way to break an egg. And while it might be the case the power was off, it could also be the case the bulb was broken! Those were classic Affirming the Consequent errors.
So, essentially, J Warner Wallace is arguing a modified version of the Prophesy / Affirming the Consequent fallacy used by theists. Examples:
P1) If my specific Jesus existed, the people will do (the fallout will be) X.
P2) The people did (the fallout) was X.
C) Therefore, my specific Jesus existed.
P1) If Jesus rose from the dead, the tomb will be empty.
P2) The tomb was empty.
C) Therefore, Jesus rose from the dead.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this fallacy.
To add on this, you can steelman the apologist's argument by making it an inference to the best explanation, eg:
1. If the tomb was empty, the best explanation is that Jesus rose from the dead.
2. The tomb was empty.
(We should go with the best explanation)
C. Jesus rose from the dead.
Of course the mere fact that some evidence has a high likelihood on some hypothesis says nothing about the probability of the hypothesis itself. Hearing noises from the attic is very likely on the hypothesis that gremlins are having a bowling tournament, but the gremlin hypothesis is terrible and starts with such a low prior that explaining this or that data point is irrelevant.
@@jolssoni2499 Thanks, very interesting. I’m all for Steel Manning.
If I understood the premise of the book from cold-case detective, J Warner Wallace, and the blurb from Frank Turek, we start with the presupposition we don’t have anything in writing, including the copies of fragments of Greek manuscripts. Therefore, we would (mostly) be looking at history from a non-historians perspective. (Ref. Appeal to False Authority)
But if I Steel Man this clearly biased Detective, I would have to assume he’s familiar with typical Western court proceedings. From there we simply ponder what’s gonna happen when the judge, during a preliminary hearing, asks (among many similar questions), “What empty tomb?”
It seems, however I could be wrong, the detective is not gonna get the prosecutor to bring this ‘cold-case’ to trial. And if he does, in the real world it won’t get far.
P1) If Jesus rose from the dead, the tomb will be empty.
P2) The tomb was empty.
C) Therefore, Jesus rose from the dead.
I usually counter that with:
P1) If Goldilocks ate the porridge, the bowl will be empty.
P2) The bowl was found empty.
C) Therefore, Goldilocks did indeed visit the house of the Three Bears and, while there, ate the Baby Bear's porridge.

When I hear the name "J Warner Wallace" I think, "Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick, gimmick."
And not even a good gimmick...
Yup. He probably spent longer coming up with this 3 strand fuse & dynamite gimmick than he did writing the book.
How the hell did this guy ever get a solid conviction at a trial?
uhh did he?
That was one hell of an edit job there. Well done!
I like to think of ‘look at the trees’ as an Easter egg you throw out every now and again, so every time I hear you say it in a video, it makes me smile. Thanks 😊
Not even a minute in... "Destroy every manuscript and every bible ... Then buy my friend's book".
🥴🤦
Disposabooks, the Great Conservative Racket.
Great work on the Star Wars editing.
Thanks!
@@Paulogia Paul, you weren't the one who edited that poor wolfman out, were you? ;)
@@Slum0vsky never!
Indeed. Very impressive. Not just the editing but also the collection of the source material.
Oddly, I'd only seen one clip before (from Spaced).
This is brilliant work brother. Thanks for all the relevant content. Your channel has been a consistent stream of helpful information and embedded learning skills.
Wow you put so much work into this Paul!!! Amazing job!
I think a big thanks can go to Constantine and his military victories in making the story of Christianity popular.
Why the needless drama with "burning" all Bibles and manuscripts? It's pretty simple to disregard poor evidence without destroying it.
Wallace is saying that if all the "original" sources for Christianity were wiped, there's enough cultural references to the Jesus story that you would be able to recreate the story, and that this somehow proves that Christianity is true. The language about burning the manuscripts is to give the image of finality to his audience.
Well the imagery of burning books is mostly used to for a reason, to invoke or underline a certain message, but I guess I shouldn't assign more depth here than what's shown otherwise. _"Aside from the Bible, what other evidence do we have?"_ isn't exactly a new approach, and the cultural impact of Christianity on western societies is also a somewhat trivial observation. So I guess his audience will love it.
If I've ever seen better receipt showing, I can't remember it. Bravo, sir.
Another fantastic thoughtful video but this one has the added benefit of Star Wars. I have been a fan since Episode 4, when it wasn't Episode 4. I saw it in the theaters back in 1977. Yes, I am old. It was such a hit with me I can remember in detail the night my 9 year old self saw it. The blue curtains pulling aside to show the screen, the smell of cigarettes and the ashtrays on one arm rest of each chair, my parents keeping what we were doing a surprise until we got in line to get tickets, etc.. I even remember the awe I felt when Darth Vader first entered the frame. I truly enjoyed your loving edit of Star Wars Fandom. Thank you.
I wonder if any of the people convicted because of the work of J. Warner Wallace have contacted the Innocence Project yet. Seriously.
If he ran his actual investigations like this, he's a face of #ACAB.
Oh, Paul... What amazing dedication that array of clips must have taken!
I'm truly impressed! :)
Aw, man! I thought there would be an at least one scene from Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars.
I mean, I like the movie you made and I know you put lot of time & efforts, but it just I was expecting it!
Loved the work, big fan ✌️
Absolutely loved your "Star Wars without Star Wars" video. Though its making me wonder if I've seen "A New Hope" once too often.
I love the bit in Reign of Fire, where Gerard Butler tells the children, who have never even seen a movie, the story of Star Wars.
THIS IS STAR WARS!!!!
I suppose we should call this the argument from comic books and trading cards for Jesus?
Wowow well done on the edit
amazing editing& important message. thanks for all your work
I'm an Atheist, but I do also believe that Ronal Raegan was the Antichrist.
I figured he was a safe choice for all faiths.
If Jebus did exist he was nothing more than a first-century Galilean cult leader.
There are over 42 sources within 150 years after Jesus’ death which mention his existence and record many events of his life.

@@Justas399 and the first account was written 40 years after his death that's more than enough time to embellish stories. And all those gospels you just listed it as well as the apocryphal were written decades and in some cases centuries after supposedly jebus lived. The Josephus account most scholars and historians consider that a 2nd Century forgery. These other writers that you've listed we're just writing down what they heard Christians say about jebus. And Christians had been embellishing these tall tales for decades by that point. So you will have to do a lot better than that to convince me.
@@Justas399 Sigh, so LOTS of 'for the Christians tell me so' and some sourcrs mentioning Christianity as another fringe cult but not being awed with Yoshua's miracles or even mentioning them? Not convincing.
@@grapeshot Lets compare the gospel accounts with
" Julius Caesar, one of Rome’s most prominent figures. Caesar is well known for his military conquests. After his Gallic Wars, he made the famous statement, “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Only five sources report his military conquests: writings by Caesar himself, Cicero, Livy, the Salona Decree, and Appian. If Julius Caesar really made a profound impact on Roman society, why didn’t more writers of antiquity mention his great military accomplishments? No one questions whether Julius did make a tremendous impact on the Roman Empire. It is evident that he did. Yet in those 150 years after his death, more non-Christian authors alone comment on Jesus than all of the sources who mentioned Julius Caesar’s great military conquests within 150 years of his death."
@@Slum0vsky I can't convince anyone who doesn't think well.
Well done, as usual!
That Star Wars edit is pure genius. Amazing work, Paul!
Glad you think so!
I love comparing fiction.
Same tbh, ever notice how much Sailor Moon anime references Star Wars, especially the first Sailor Moon anime?
@@autobotstarscream765 I haven't but I'd be down to do some research
Apologists love to argue that God sent Jesus at exactly the right time because Rome had taken over the world and unified cultures and languages, allowing the gospel to spread everywhere.
But they don’t realize that maybe they’re putting the cart before the horse. Maybe the reason the gospel spread everywhere was because of Rome, which is why Jesus got so popular. Haha
I would object at 'everywhere' - it took it lots of time to get it to China or Americas... pretty lazy, as miracles-working goes.
@@Slum0vsky I meant “everywhere” as the known world at that time, but it was hyperbole in any case.
@Steve M They gave us the basis of our legal system.
Dear Paul, I have to say that you have my utmost respect brother! The time, dedication and commitment to work quality is super impressive my friend and I can only hope that you could, at some point in life, unblind an apologist. Meanwhile, I am proud to show your work to my circle of friends who are questioning their faith... The impact you are having on this world should fill you with a great sense of achievement and purpose in life. A warm hug from a Peruvian brother... Cheers!
Amazing work! Well done.
Christianity is barely 2000 years old and already dying out. As far as religions or world views go, that is pretty pathetic.
The bible through charade...
Yeessssss!!!!!
the icing on the cake would be to do another video showing stories that star wars drew upon, as pretty much any story does as they are made to be relatable to our own ideas of some character succeeding against great odds. This would then showcase your other point about how Christianity was not some story in a vacuum but one that shared its origins with many religions that came before. The natural selection of the attributes that were most successful for people to adopt it and spread it.
just like how Lucas molded his story from other works that inspired him to give his take on what that would look like and entertain his audience so to was the works of the bible, placing their character in the role of saving and loving of all people just as the gods had been depicted before.
awesome video and love the channel!
Nice work. And a great edit of the original Star Wars movie. There were references in there that I forgot about. It was fun to see them all again.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I mean, Star Trek is better than Star Wars… but even us atheist Trekkies find this amazing 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sean McDowell - _a fellow Christian_ - looks like he's in physical pain while listening to Wallace rabbit on ... just as if the silliness of Wallace's book is deeply embarrassing to him.
He seems to be thinking: _Is this nutter seriously going to try to con people with this rubbish?_
Hey Paul,
Summer's over and i need to admit that my prediction of 100K subs by now was a bit optimistic - but not terribly so. You're currently sitting just short of 85K, only 15% shy of goal. And your content only gets better as time passes.
Congratulations on all your success!
Liked, commented, and shared. Thank you.
I mean I do kind of agree that without Jesus our scientific progress would look very different. I just don’t think we would agree on how 😂
ha!
This is epic, Paulogia! If this doesn't go viral, something is wrong! Nice work!
Some truly brilliant editing on that recreation of Star Wars!
That was a wonderful edit!!! Love your work paul. You never fail to impress
