Kasteel de Haar is our version of a fairytale castle, built 19th century i guess and just being a nice house for rich people... I recommend kasteel Doornenburg. That one is a true example of a Dutch castle...
Slot Loevestein is worth a visit. Also, a lot of the fortresses of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie are very interesting, as is the history of the Waterlinie in general.
The style of the city hall in Hilversum by Dudok is called "Nieuwe Haagse School" and is derived from the "cubism" movement in the first half of the 20th century.
Kasteel de Haar bij Utrecht is the most beautiful castle. In the olden days the baron held lavish parties for the rich and famous there. Het Loo as others mentioned is also very nice, but is an actual palace. Both also have really nice gardens.
@@marcpool8589 why is it a fake castle. It's build on the ruins of the original castle. Many castles have been altered, rebuild or restored to their former glory through the centuries.
Kasteel de Haar is the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands. Its in the province of Utrecht in Haarzuilens. 5 KM from trainstation Maarssen. Kasteel de Haar is a 55 ha park with a maze, ponds (an English landscape park with French style gardens) where its allowed to pick-nick AND its free with museumkaart also.... Most recommended castle in Netherlands!
It's nice, but not really "original". The original medieval castle was in ruins when the baron van Zuylen had it rebuild and redesigned in the late 19th century using his wife's money (from the Rothschild family). It's now more an example of that era's extrema extravagance than of a real castle. Still very beautifull and impressive though. The redesign was by the architect Kuijpers who also did the rijksmuseum and Amsterdam train station.
I should visit Muiderslot some time, looks amazing! I have spent a number of weekends at the fort (Westbatterij Muiden) across the harbour LARPing. It's a sea scout base and it's rented out too. The castle would be great for a LARP too.
Gelderland is the castle province of the Netherlands! But not only castles but also places like Jachtslot Sint Hubertus or Radio Kootwijk are worth visiting.
Thank you for visiting our home town of Naarden! We like it a lot. We live just outside Naarden Vesting, it is only a 5 min bike ride. I see you have discovered Mout, definitely our favorite place for a beer and a bite. It is a typical micro brewery. I can highly recommend the Gooische Bubbel, a blond beer made with champagne yeast. Please come back some time, two days is waaaay to little to explore all the great places in het Gooi (the name of the area between Weesp and Baarn)
Fun to see you visit my hometown, Loosdrecht. I was born across from the Porselein haven when it still was Ottenhome. Now i live near Sypesteyn where we also did our wedding pictures.
Poor Alex, you look exhausted. But, on the other hand, you provide a great video again. I was born in the Netherlands BUT, you manage to see more than I did! En, Michelle, jouw uitspraak verdient punten!!!! 🥰
Het raadhuis van Dudok in Hilversum - to my taste the most beautiful building of the Netherlands! In interior design (also by Dudok!) is also fabulous. The biggest castle in the Netherlands is easily Kasteel Haarzuilens near Utrecht. It has a famous Hollywood star connection since this is where Audrey Hepburn was partly raised. Yes, she is of Dutch descent and actually spoke Dutch rather well, also in her glory years.
Castle Doornenburg is nice, they have a cool medieval festival. Close to Fort Pannerden and only beautiful bikeride along the dike from Arnhem, where you should realy get diner at Konijnenvoer or Colibrí. Second visit to Arnhem maybe? 😊 I think you haven't seen Museum Arnhem, Park Sonsbeek and the medieval cellars. Great video, I still have to go to Muiderslot, thanks for the reminder 😉
If you love castles....make sure to visit Brederode Ruins...Its gorgeous and still original 13th century. Hollands most romantic castle. Close to Haarlem. You will love it, guaranteed.😊
How nice to see you visited Hilversum and spent some time in our "dorp". The Vitus church is the highest neo Gothic church (98m) and was built by the same architect of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station.
Seeing you both walk around with Iamsterdam cards made me wonder if you've ever thought about buying a museumkaart. This card gives you acces to about every castle, museum and open air museum in the Netherlands and costs only about 70 euro for a full year. Since you like to explore a lot, it will definitely be worth it. Have fun exploring the rest of our beautiful country! If you do decide to buy the card, Kasteel de Haar would be an excellent first stop, or maybe Huis van Gijn in your hometown.
Thanks for the Naarden Video. If you like Naarden you will probably also like Brielle on the island of Voorne Putten. Also consider to visit De Maasvlakte and a boat trip in the harbor if you ever visit Voorne Putten.
Visit the castle Slot Loevestein in Woudrichem. Take a 25 minute drive with the r-net train to Gorinchem, walk trough te old town of Gorinchem and take the ferry to woudrichem or Slot Loevestein Castle itself. Only 30km from Dordrecht.
One of my workplaces is in Hilversum near the city hall. I very much like the architecture in Hilversum, Dudok's style is very recognizable and I like it a lot. Hilversum is a disaster to drive a car in though. I would rather not do it, but public transportation takes me almost 2 hours to get there from home, versus 45 minutes by car...

To hear you say Sypesteyn was remarkably well preserved is kind of ironic.. the original castle that stood there was a ruin already by the time the land came into the hands of the Sypesteyn family in 1572. They fixed up the ruin in 1664, but then it was completely destroyed again in 1673. Then they lost control of the land by the year 1778, tried to buy it back in 1814 but couldn't get financing, ultimate did get the land that still had the ruined foundations of the old castle on it back in 1899, and started rebuilding the castle in 1902 -- so this incarnation of it actually qualifies as one of the few literal "20th century castles" -- and the building of what is there now only stopped by 1927, so.. despite looking thoroughly medieval, it is not even a hundred years old. It is in such good shape because by the time they finally saw it rebuilt, the age of castles was long over and we were pretty much in the modern era already. It does look older than it is, because the family purchased aged bricks, planks and doors from ruins and derelict period buildings elsewhere -- the parts are older than the whole into which they have been reassembled. That said, it is a truly lovely restored little castle now, with a fine garden.
I only visited Muiderslot once as a kid, but I remember they had a weapon named "goedendag" there, which I thought was very funny. Is it still there, did you guys see it? Also, if we measure by the amount of picturesque shots in one video then I think this one is definitely top 3, if not #1.
What is the spiciest food you have had in The Netherlands? I have lived here my entire life and It's really hard to find spicy food that is actually spicy.
the surinaams worstenbroodje from our den bosch video. vlammetjes? neither of those things were super spicy, just mild spicy. but they’re good 🤤 oh the actual spiciest thing we had was the “spicy pad thai” from this thai restaurant we ordered from in rotterdam on thuisbezorgd a while back. it melted our faces off. it wasn’t even good, haha

I only visited Muiderslot once as a kid, but I remember they had a weapon named "goedendag" there, which I thought was very funny. Is it still there, did you guys see it? Also, if we measure by the amount of picturesque shots in one video then I think this one is definitely top 3, if not #1.
haha i didn’t but that is an oddly threatening name for a weapon 😅
You've got really blue eyes OMG
There is a ruin of a castle in Dordrecht Huis ter Merwede. Quite close to it is an American thing: a drive in Mac Donalds.
😊😊
That mystery dip number 2, looks like muhammara
heyyy thank you!! it was so good!
In Luxembourg rhe castle is much nicer and better preserved. 4 hour drive but really worth it.
What is the spiciest food you have had in The Netherlands? I have lived here my entire life and It's really hard to find spicy food that is actually spicy.
the surinaams worstenbroodje from our den bosch video. vlammetjes? neither of those things were super spicy, just mild spicy. but they’re good 🤤
oh the actual spiciest thing we had was the “spicy pad thai” from this thai restaurant we ordered from in rotterdam on thuisbezorgd a while back. it melted our faces off. it wasn’t even good, haha
Did you know that in Laren three out of ten people are millionaires? And in the Netherlands one in seventeen people are millionaires.
what do you mean "not many castles"?
There are more then 700...
How was the castles
castle-y
Surprised to hear you guys not commenting on the Coq brie. Kind of disappointing tbh
hahah we liked it, actually. it didn’t have a ton of flavor but it wasn’t that bad
it’s a lot better than the AH brie 😂
@@buncharted It's pronounced Cock. That's what I meant.
oh hahahaha
wow, you’re right. i am so sorry
oh wow a Duke Nukem reference
I have a feeling you are still on the American speed of 14 European capitals in a week.
we definitely aren’t. we made that mistake like a year and a half ago and vowed never again :)
Isn't it a little ironic that a lot of these Dutch towns have the word "berg" in them, while the country is mostly flat?
