      You don’t have to be so annoyed about it, though. Many Dutch speakers are happy to switch to English to accommodate those of us who find Dutch a bit difficult still. By habit, my Dutch colleagues would speak to each other in Dutch even when I am around. I just zone out at the point when I can’t follow anymore. They also don’t mind if I reply in English when they speak to me in Dutch.

    Please don't kill spiders. They are incredibly useful critters! They get rid of the _really_ annoying insect like mosquitos, fleas, silverfish, bed bugs, etc. Most spiders in your house (like the common house spider) hide and only come out at night. And they are scared of people so most of the time won't come anywhere near you. The long legged spiders are very useful too. They stay in the same place and only wander in small areas so most of the time you know where they are. If they do scare you, just catch them and put them outside. They will find a way back into your home again but at least it gives you some peace of mind.

    Promotions at Kruidvat, Etos or Albert Heijn, for example, are more 'feel-good promotions'. You don't actually get a second product 'free', for example. You're essentially paying too much for a branded product every time you buy it. In other words: you buy 1 and pay for 5. Then you supposedly get 1 or 2 'free'. A bottle of shower gel costs the manufacturer only 40 cents in contents and packaging, but it is sold for 8 or 9 times the price. Don't fall for that. If you want to save money, choose the house brand. If you want to stick with your favorite brand because you are very satisfied with it, you can consider ordering it in bulk via the internet. Then you pay a lower amount per piece than in the supermarket.

  • @axMf3qTI
    @axMf3qTI День назад +14

    The buy 1 get 1 is the real price. Dutch people like sales, so some products are always on sale somewhere. But the on-sale price is the normal price and if you don't buy it on-sale you just pay too much for that item. Which means your bathroom also functions als a tiny warehouse because you have to buy 2 of them and buy 4 get 1 seems normal now too. Keuringsdienst van waarde has an episode over this, check NPO.

    I would say regarding the language thing. I know lots of people here in Amsterdam that refuse to speak English anymore. I see the following three reasons:
    1. One reason i see a lot is because all the stores started hiring English speaking workers. To the point that it is rare to see a Dutch speaking employee at all. i Think the locals are annoyed by that a lot.
    2. There is also a recent (last 5/8 years) change in how tourists are seen. They are not liked very much anymore. This happend because almost half of the people in the city would be tourists. And the city, especially the inner parts, are not livable anymore.
    3. There is a growing nationalistic view here. This is mainly because of the housing crisis and migrants. But it is also a longer/larger (even global) trend of moving away from multiculturalism and globalism.

    There are a lot American cheeses like Kraft singles that cant even be called a cheese legally because of the extra additives.

    My opinion on the product prices, like import stuff is of course first of all the tax, its always been extremely high here so makes it more expensive, but also and this is my reasoning/opinion we are a country of only 17,5/18 mill people compared to france 68 mill and germany 84 mill so when shops there buy in bulk from say Maybelline they get it for cheaper cause they have to buy more and distribute that all over the country in the shops, when our shops buy that stuff they can buy it in large quantities but probably wont sell as much as the Germans or french, so more unlikely that they buy it in as large quantities as German/french shops do, but for an import/export country this are getting out of hand here for sure, that's why i love our German neighbours 😂.

    Coffee is also cheaper than in Germany and they shop it here because we don’t have a coffee tax.
    The same in Belgium they would even go in busses to the Netherlands for prescription drugs and the most idiotic twist now the Dutch need to stock up In Belgium for a prescription drug they don’t deliver because Dutch government / health insurance have negotiated a lower price for for example asthma medication. So now there is a shortage the companies deliver to the country’s who pay the best price
    Dutch are known for loving a great buy so I’ve heard on RTL News they’ve really been targeting in the Netherlands on discounts and in Germany they don’t fluctuate as much in price.
    In Belgium sale for clothing is forbidden outside regulated dates where there is in the Netherlands no restrictions on sales.

  • @legi0naire
    @legi0naire День назад +1

    Netherlands have a discount culture with healthcare and beauty products, discounts go as far as 3 for price of 1 or 70% off.
    So if you buy out side of the discount window you get screwed over, it's to get maximum profit from people with little time.
    50% off is the real price of many products.

  • @martianpudding9522
    @martianpudding9522 День назад +1

    I almost feel like there might not be much of a point in making products a reasonable price because Dutch people tend to be so frugal that we'd only buy the cheapest kind or something on sale anyway. Like I'd never pay 20+ euros for sunscreen, I'd either buy it on sale or get like Kruidvat's own brand. But for the same reason I would probably also not buy 7 euro sunscreen either if there's 3 euro cheap sunscreen available or a more expensive version on sale that comes out to something similar to 7 euros.

    The cheese thing is interesting. I think because cheese is such a staple food here, there's not much variation in the cheese most people eat on a day to day basis. Most people want the same thing for breakfast most days. When that's a cheese sandwich, it's gotta be a basic, reliable cheese. Once in a while you'll want to have a special cheese meal, and then you go to a cheese shop. Like how in France, where bread is a staple food for many meals, there's not much variation in the bread you get at the average grocery store.
    Oh and for a tosti, make a mix of grated aged and young cheese for the combination of the perfect melty fattiness and the best flavor.

    Often Dutch stores are 2 to 4 times more expensive. Thats not a "VAT" issue by the way, dutch vat is 21%, German 19%, so that cant be the difference.

    If you're gonna go to a cheeseshop be sure to ask 4 'brokkelkaas' which is really old and maybe has saltcrystals in them.. and do not forget to ask for 'boerenkaas' this also comes in an age variety bus is more artisanal.. Also a good tip is to go to the market instead of a cheeseshop.. prices are lower and the quality is similar.. plus.. it is not uncommon to get a taste sample before you buy..

      I do not agree with the statement that the supermarkets have similar cheeses to cheese shops. Jonge kaas is very boring in the supermarkets. In a cheese shop jonge kaas can have flavors closer to an older cheese. oude kaas (my favorite) is really dry and far las flavourful then the oude kaas in the cheese shops. Supermarket oude kaas is closer to a really old and dry belegen kaas. You know that you have a good oude kaas when you can smell it trough the package. It should be smooth not dry.

      @@ThaLioN987 Agree.. However.. cheeseshops can get prices bumped up to way too high.. dutch saying: 'op de markt is je gulden een daalder waard' still holds true.
      Young cheese like 'graskaas' or even younger like 'meikaas' are better than in the supermarket.. supermarketcheese is only 4 grating/eaten with some mustard/grilled cheese..

    Cheese you heat at anyway is an art. Like a tostie you like old cheese you need to mix your cheese.
    Get an grated mozzarella young gouda mix and put the old cheese on that. You want some ham on it or sause put that on top and put some of the mozzarella mix on top of that. This way you get the melt in the bread and you get the old cheese also. Many different ways to do this, but this is my way.

    First of all: Dordrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. But as for the language it is a difficult question. Are you a tourist or the 'E'-word. We don't know.
    My experience is (as a Dutch person) to give a sign. 'Mag ik' are two very strong words. People will understand and switch to Dutch (not always) just for trying. But maybe I'm too positive.

    Michelle is on point with her hypothesis about it, we are a nation of (finding) discounts. Hence big prices but often a good discount. German drugstores seldom have discounts but just low prices all the time. Thus you can find products decent prices if you buy in bulk over here, but if you need something right now, you really need to pony up.

Ofcourse general and more complicated stuff in Dutch and English. I probably don't have the English vocabulary for complicated plumbing issues. I sometimes do check with Google translate for English or German vocabulary. I am getting better in English food vocabulary.

    Your Dutch has really gotten better and compliments on the pronunciation of Rotterdam and Amsterdam with real A sounds instead of the ae ! Sounds so good 👏🏻
    About the integration in the community.. being able to understand Dutch is so difficult! We tend to speak Dutch amongst ourselves, especially when alcohol is involved. If you don't understand Dutch, you will be singled out of the conversation. Not on purpose or out of us being mean, just because by default.

    This was seriously a fun vlog Alex and Michelle. And yes, drugstore products are extremely expensive here. Apart from a slightly higher VAT, this also has to do with the fact that not so many people live here and the negotiating position with manufacturers is weaker. In Germany, because of the 80 million inhabitants (instead of 18 million here), they can also purchase a much larger volume. And shopkeepers here often rent a building and the rent here is also huge due to lack of real estate. If you need a word for Michelle, here's one: "langdradig." That's kind of how this vlog started.

These type of conversations are way more useful for anyone coming to the Netherlands than all the videos infested with the meme topics. Hope this will give you a bit of a bigger audience with non-Dutch listeners/watchers. I think for us "Dutchies" it's also interesting to hear what actual experiences are like, and it gives us a little more insight in you as fellow humans as well. Bedankt!

But that explains why there are weekly products on sale (like 1 + 1 for free) without shops going bankrupt.

    Interesting video. I mean podcast. Also, I also always buy jong belegen. The housebrand one from Plus is the best I think. If you go to de kaasboer there is way more distinction between the different types btw. In supermarkets the type is also a bit relevant, but if bought quick like that the age is more important because the quality of taste between the types is less noticeable.
    Edit: Cheese in NL is a thing for a reason and if you go outside the supermarkets there is a world of tastes and types to explore and enjoy.

    I don't know how this is in the Netherlands, but one thing that might explain why these prices might be lower in Germany is that a lot of store employees are paid VERY LITTLE and the government heavily subsidizes their wages. I never liked this concept, and if the Netherlands doesn't do this then it might explain why stores might have to make bigger margins to cover employee costs.

    My favorite cheese in the Netherlands was the Albert Heijn Extra Belegen Gouda (used to be in purple packaging), just the regular type. But this is an idea for an episode for you two. Do an episode on all the different types of Gouda cheese in the Netherlands. For example Farmer’s cheese extra Belegen does not taste the same as the regular extra Belegen. There are so many other types of Gouda cheese.

    You are great at podcasts! Please do this more often if you have the time haha! The A-brand buy one get one free promotions are indeed calculated into the regular sale price, and almost everyone in the Netherlands knows this, so you are spot on and very Dutch now xD. By the way: use the house brand sun screen (AH Care for example), often they are under 6 euro's. Also, it is prohibited by law to sell over the counter medicine on sale.

    I always find your videos fun and interesting to watch, how you experience life here during the time that you are here and how you develop further here in our culture.I am originally from Limburg and have lived in South Holland for almost 20 years, but I do have an opinion about expats, migrants or refugees or whatever comes here from abroad and learn our language, I find that antisocial and disrespectful towards the people and country, I would not enter into intensive contact with these kinds of people, such as a friendship or relationship, if I were to go abroad If I migrate to any country, I will first learn the language of that country out of respect for the people.But those are my principles of what I consider important when I migrate because the population would also greatly appreciate and respect that.I just wanted to say that;)sleep well and have a good night's rest

    Cheese oh yeah the cheese is a very big topic :) , Jonge kaas is not the same as a different brand or place jonge kaas. you also have a lot of fat options in kaas, i always go for the full fat or boerenkaas because its more flavourful and i use less slices that way, also try the different ingredients added into the cheese like truffelkaas, komijnkaas, brandnetelkaas, sambalkaas etc. what i would like to know if the American or cheddar cheese you can buy here is the same as in the US?

    I don't think that anyone expects a fully researched video on this channel. You always made it clear that your reports are based on your own opinions and experiences in daily life and in interacting with Dutch people. If someone feels offended by what you have noticed than that's their problem. Has got nothing to do with you.
