    7:00. I agree that:
    1. eq first with subtractive (remove what’s bad)
    2.then compression to smooth and stabilize,
    3. then additive EQ (bring out the good stuff).
    Some guys add a 2nd compressor at the end, subtly, try it... you might just like it.

      Not necessesarily, sometimes I like eq boosts right before compression, it makes the boosted ranger thicker sounding without making it louder, post compression eq boosts can make the tracks louder. Pre compression eq boosts cause the boosted frequencies to hit the compressor harder, which can be nice!

      That’s a really good point
      Yes sir... Mixing and recording is like cooking. Sometimes we add spices before we cook to infuse the flavors...sometimes we add them after we cook.
      The best thing to wrap my head around in sound engineering is that ALL that matters is the end result.
      So I’ve tried everything, and keep learning and experimenting !!
      Peace

    Another great vid Austin. You read my mind. So you use two mics for kick drum? One inside and one outside. Both Audix D6s?

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  8 лет назад

      Yes 2 kick mics. The D6 is inside the front port pointing towards the beater and I use an old AKG Perception 200 condenser mic on the outside, usually about 6 inches or so from the front head. I've been doing that for a while but Sweetwater recently made a video that demonstrates it pretty well. It's linked below if you want to check that out.

      +Led Logic is unique with its midi and scoring functions, especially with how I use it for transcribing. I used Pro Tools exclusively for a while and I think it's great for recording bands and mixing, but Logic just has certain things that work better for me. Also, Logic is cheaper and much less hassle to operate because you dont need an iLok and all that garbage like with Pro Tools. I could go on and on about all this but I think you get the point haha

    I feel like that lowmid cut at 250 on the drum bus messes with your snare, especially since you say you like to boost it on the channel eq. I'd recommend fixing that in the tracks you dislike it on, considering how important the snare is. Also, try some parallel compression! Bus everything through a separate bus and slam it (10+ db of reduction) with a fast attack and release time, and then blend it with your dry drums. Helps bring out the sustain.

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  8 лет назад

      +Luuk Meijwaard I've experimented with parallel compression over the years but I decided to not include that in this series because I don't really end up using it that much in my mixes. I'll go back and experiment with it some more and see what I can do with it. Thanks for the suggestions!

      YES, most DAWs have a special Saving function for every track, even the Master channel in the Mixer, so it IS possible to save mixing/mastering CHAINS for your favorite go-to effects/vst plugins. Normally you find that feature in a drop-down menu (Tools) or some type of keyboard shortcut to achieve that idea 👍

    I get so much bleed from other drums into my kick mic. How do you get your kick mic to sound so clean even before you started?

    • @alessandrofiorini7074
      @alessandrofiorini7074 4 года назад

      Jason Brown I had the same problem. I solved it by placing the kick mic a little bit into the kick while staying close to the port hole and by covering the “resonant part of the drum” with a heavy blanket. The blanket might kill a bit the high freq but I kinda like it.

    • @realskaterbnb23
      @realskaterbnb23 4 года назад

      his kick mic is inserted into his kick drum. his kick out mic has much more bleed as you can see into the video. I currently don't have a hole in my drum reso head so I get a lot of bleed as well. just gotta cut the highs out a little more if you don't want the bleed.

  • @cryptonios
    @cryptonios 6 лет назад

    I don't know if you'll see and reply to this message but that's ok, I'll try. I have the same headphone as you but I'm having problems with my hearing because I don't know how to use the volume correctly. Let me explain better: when I'm recording some drum cover, I always put the music line loud, along with my drum loud line as well. the question is: for us drummers, at the time of recording and talking about hearing protection as well, I would like to know how you use the volumes, firstly to follow the music without getting lost, and also to protect your hearing. what is the correct way to protect yourself? Thank you very much.!

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  2 года назад +1

      There is really no perfect formula for monitoring levels when recording. It’s all very personal but I like to just keep it as balanced as possible so neither my drums nor the song is overpowering the other. I want it to sound as close to the final mix as possible so I can hear exactly how I am playing in relation to the track. But I am also cognizant of protecting my hearing so my overall volume of both elements is not excessively loud. Just loud enough to where I don’t lose track of anything while recording. Hope that helps.

    can someone ease explain what compression is

    • @chezchezchezchez
      @chezchezchezchez 8 лет назад +1

      Took me a while to get it too.
      Essentially, you are raising the low VOLUME parts AND lowering the high volume parts.
      Hence "compressing" (the dynamic range) the sound.
      Say a singer SCREAMS and then whispers in a song. We would have a problem!
      Why? Because if your sound system had the volume high enough to hear the whisper, you can imagine how ear piercing the scream would be. So..we have to compress the two extremes into a manageable sound range.
      Yes, it's more complex than I explained but this is a good start to understanding it all.

    Do you always treat the drums as 1, in a bus now or do you treat them with plugins on each track too separately?

    you know, people that go for eq after compression secretly use eq in the compressors' side-chain.... ;) screw all debate about making music. if it works it works

    Your kick EQ is horrifying, why are you cutting out lows?!

      +Creativecoverz It's not uncommon to filter out those super lows. The frequency range I try to maximize for the kicks low end is in that 45-75khz range. Anything below that seems to just kind of muddy up the sound and not contribute much to the audible character so I just filter it out a little bit to clean it up.
