      well if you don't mind not having the latest and greatest you can always buy their older products that drop in price after these newer ones show up. they're still decently powerful you just won't be able to run the latest games at decent settings, but hey, theyre still good as emulation machines for big consoles like PS2/Gamecube/etc.

    Within Bazzite In Handheld Daemon there is a setting of TDP boost. After I disabled it my battery life seemed to be more consistent and better. Swipe the top left corner to get full menu. Swap the right to have smaller menu. On desktop mode within Handheld Daemon you can also change scheduler to developed LAVD scheduler.
    With Decky Loader you can install powertools and with that you can quickly disable cores. It can make huge difference on low tdps where instead of powering loads of cores it can divert energy to boost just few required cores or gpu.
    Run the game, look how many cores are taxed and limit near that. Don't disable the SMT option as it bugs out the cores.
    I noticed that often during cpu task like downloading or processing shaders gpu draws high power too. I have 8840u version though

    I'm a fan of these videos, so I'm not hating when I say this: Using Frame Gen to showcase performance at the begging of the video, is as dishonest as Nvidia saying the 5070 is as fast as the 4090. Please, add native FPS performance of those games in the benchmark section. A lot of people, me included, would never enable Frame Gen with native FPS below 60 FPS. I don't care if you don't feel the input lag, a lot of people would buy this device using this review, and when they would turn on Frame Gen they will find themselves having a horrible experience because of the bad input lag and frame pacing.

    I know they're the same thing for all intents and purposes. But can we start referring to Bazzite and SteamOS explicitly so that its clear which has Valve support as it's going to be confusing when SteamOS actually launches

    • @AlexanderPavel
      @AlexanderPavel 8 дней назад +4

      They are not the same for all intents and purposes. Bazzite stays much more up to date on the kernel and mesa (userspace gpu driver) side, which leads to some big performance and efficiency improvements that take far longer to arrive in SteamOS. Bazzite also has a different CPU scheduler in the kernel called BORE, which is optimized for gaming and likely helps the 1% and 0.2% lows a good amount. The SCX_LAVD scheduler may be a bit better for both performance and power and will likely come to SteamOS eventually, but the kernel it needs won't come to SteamOS until sometime around the end of the year based on previous trends. Which is disappointing since the LAVD scheduler seems to have been mostly tested on the Deck. Meanwhile, Bazzite already has support for it and it can be enabled with a single command in the console.
      I get that Valve wants to move a bit more slowly to prevent breaking things, but it takes about a year for improvements that they have made to enter SteamOS after the changes first make it to mainline. The reason they chose Arch as a base was to be more up-to-date on software, but they're actually moving quite slowly. It's kinda disappointing imo.

      CoreCtrl isn't quite a slider, but it is really easy to set up perf profiles and toggle between them.

    • @velgus
      @velgus 8 дней назад +2

      It has 2/3 of those things by default... Aside from core count, which still requires a 3rd-party tool (can use Decky Power Tools, which works fine with the HX 370), those are available in the HHD menu (I believe on GPD devices, it's holding the QAM button), which is included in Bazzite by default. Steam QAM's TDP slider also works fine - it overrides the HHD slider if adjusted, and vice versa.
      Also the inconsistency Phawx found in higher power usage on Bazzite would likely be reduced or eliminated entirely by disabling TDP Boost from the same menu. Doing so doesn't negatively affect the performance at all in my experience - I believe it's more of a bursty/productivity workload feature, rather than than being of any value for gaming.

    • @velgus
      @velgus 8 дней назад

      I don't know about sub-10W (since basically no one has done benchmarks of it), but at 10W HX 370 on Bazzite matches or exceeds the Steam Deck efficiency. What you said was mostly true for all chips "until" Strix Point, though 15W is typically actually where the previous chips started exceeding Steam Deck performance - the 7840U/8840U at 13-14W were roughly equal to the Steam Deck at 15W. Note I'm only talking about CPU package power, not total system power, which obviously can vary a lot, and is better (lower) than average on SD.
      For example, comparing a couple games with Bazzite on HX 370 here with Phawx's video where he showed the slight performance differences between the SD LCD vs. OLED at 10W:
      * Batman has ~6 higher average FPS, 3 FPS higher 1% lows, and 9 FPS higher 0.2% lows on HX 370.
      * CP2077 is like +/- 3 FPS (HX 370 has better lows, worse average vs. LCD, but better average vs. OLED).
      * Deus Ex is almost exactly the same for both averages and lows.

    • @velgus
      @velgus 8 дней назад

      @ I was replying to this exact quote from you: "The Deck is crazy efficient because of its custom-built APU which runs crazy efficiently at lower TDPs (15w and lower) compared to these Strix Point behemoths."
      While I guess you could call them "behemoths" because they can be set much higher (30-35W) than the SD (which is capped at 15W), my point is that Strix Point is no longer inefficient at low wattages relative to the SD's custom solution if you cap the CPU package power to be equal at lower wattages.

    • @damianabregba7476
      @damianabregba7476 8 дней назад

      It's still inefficient in a sense that smaller node gives you similar performance than old one. Efficiency gains from node shrink is balanced by inefficiency due to having higher tdp target and playing below optimal point. From experience they also drop quicker the lower you go below optimum.
      You can claw that back by disabling cores, so not a dealbreaker, but a bit finnicky.
      Efficiency on new architecture/node + efficency from targeting lower tdps could be big.
      Right now new ones mostly allows you to burn through your battery even more and gain something for it. Good for docked experience though.

    That absurd power usage in a very old game reminds me of issues I've had with _Final Fantasy X-2_ on the Steam Deck-the game just demands as much power from the CPU as it can, which led to it running *worse* (to the point of instability and crashing) if I didn't manually set a low TDP limit. I suspect that it must have just not been written with proper sleep() operations.

    Does Bazzite or Steam Os support Vr gaming (steam vr or meta), and what is compatibilty like with gaming perhipherals like a Fanatec wheel for example? Also does it support all the major game libraries? Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos support? These newer handhelds are quite powerful and have the power of a low end gaming pc when docked. But I wouldn't switch to Steam OS or Bazzite if it doesn't have the compatibility and the level of 3rd party support that Windows has.

    • @valrond
      @valrond 8 дней назад +2

      No. It doesn't. It supports Steam, not all games, mind you, and you can try and install launchers from others publishers like Epic, Ubisoft or EA, but they are a hassle and you lose all the advantage of using SteamOS (that it works like a handheld console). Oh, no microsoft store or game pass of course. Most of the software that works for windows doesn't work in linux (which is what this is), I couldn't even use Razer Synapse for my Razer Naga Pro mouse.
      That's what they forget to tell you. SteamOS is just good for (some) steam games with the integrated controller and some bluetooth ones.
      I use my ROG like a miniPC with a dock, so I can do anything that a full desktop can in a very small package, so it stays with Windows. Everything works.
      And in handheld mode, I don't have a problem. I can use the touch screen like in my phone or tablet, these people seem alergic to using a touchscreen now.

    This is comparison is flawed.
    Bazitte prioritizes the iGPU by default.
    You can do it in Windows with Universal x86 Tuning Utility Handheld.
    Energy Performance Preference changes the priority between CPU and iGPU, set it to 100 for iGPU.
    Combine that with AFMF2 or lossless scaling and it will be even better.
    If you want a proper comparison, set the CPU and iGPU to the same fixed clocks in Bazzite and Windows.
    Bazzite turns your handheld into a console, you can only play games.
    Windows turns your handheld into a PC, you can do much more.
    It's up to the handheld manufacturers to include proper power management tools, not (Microsoft) Windows.
    Install Universal x86 Tuning Utility Handheld, or Handheld Companion and use the right options.

      Other devices you might buy or apps you actually need ?
      Let's be honest, Linux, Unix, or whatever, is really cool but limited and requires tweaking.
      Most people don't know how to do that and don't have time to waste tinkering.

      I don't have a 3d printer but a quick google search shows that it seems to be possible.

      Why would authentificator apps not work?
      Most work just fine. My external sound card for my xlr mic and electric guitar actually works better on linux then windows. And I expected to have problems with it lmao.
      Honestly it really depends on what you do on your pc. Generally linux has been mostly tinker free for me and my usecase and distros like chromeos show that it can work great for basic tasks for a lot of people.
      Of course it's not for everyone (people who use adobe for work for example) but linux PCs are deffinately normal PCs.

    • @NolanPG
      @NolanPG 7 дней назад

      @@brunoflausinodasilva7372 What a subtle way of saying you don't know what can be actually installed on any Linux distro
      You can install LibreOffice, OnlyOffice and even Microsoft Office if you don't care about it running through wine, note that the first two are fully compatible with all the features MS Office has and are a little better handling images on documents.
      All the apps to make a 3D printer work? I don't know but at least Ultimaker distributes its software for Linux officially (didn't check any other brand) and Blender is Linux native, I don't use 3D printers myself and it's pretty much an edge case scenario but a simple search on google showed this.
      Capture Cards? Native support without installing drivers because thankfully Linux devs actually used their brains and made drivers be included as kernel modules (functionality can be managed through your Desktop Environment settings GUI or third party apps)
      Authenticator apps? I'd assume people already have an Android phone or an iPhone for that, but worry not, if you want to have it on your Linux PC, there are apps for that, Google Authenticator itself for example.
      Any piece of additional hardware 99% of the time will be supported out of the box only using kernel modules drivers (without downloading or installing anything), that's the case for printers, capture cards, audio interfaces, net cards, etc.
      Talking about tinkering being a need in Linux and at the same time saying you need to install and configure at least three apps on Windows to make this a "fair comparison", I actually think that IT IS a fair comparison because it compares both systems as they were out of the box, if the manufacturer that ships the device with Windows didn't optimize it, the user most likely won't either.
      Most mainstream Linux distros don't need tinkering (or the use of terminal) ever if you don't want to (it's only an option), Bazzite here is an example, and yes it starts up with Steam's Big Picture by default because that's the use case of that distro, just play games game, but underneath it has KDE and you can change settings (through GUIs, no terminal required, no installing anything else required) to make it start with KDE, and also enable one tap to left-click two taps to right-click on the trackpad, that is an option inside KDE Settings (again GUI).
      Now of course Linux has problems, NVIDIA drivers are good now but NVIDIA feature support could be better, most online game developers bork Linux support intentionally, there's no AMD Adrenalin app (God I miss AMD Adrenalin), and Adobe doesn't want to support Linux, there are alternatives obviously but it's not the same, I mean I don't like Adobe but it being a pretty important company for PC professional users is a fact (you can run old Adobe software through wine like Adobe Photoshop CS6). However these problems aren't alike the ones you portrayed and personally I don't think Linux Desktop situation is bad.

    Honestly, Linux in general wins over Windows in terms of performance and resource effectiveness.... I switched to Manjaro Gnome recently (Arch distribution for "the average user"), and sure, I haven't fiddled around with the terminal, I don't use gamescope, I don't have the fancy features of Steam OS's "Big Picture Mode" (But it's probably only a matter of time before all of that will become integrated with Steam itself as "mandatory dependencies"). My take away is that performance is either equal or much better than Windows, and if the average performance is worse than windows, then the 1% lows are typically still far better resulting in a "smoother" and more consistent experience. In many games I have witnessed Linux allocate about 1-2GB less VRAM in modern AAA games. And now when I am playing FFVII Rebirth I realize that I have no stutters (unless I turn the camera super quickly with the mouse, that however, seems to be a "geometry culling" issue). When I tired in Windows stutters were everywhere, it felt atrocious to play, and yes, I did wait for shader caching. With all of that being said, I know Valve has been working with AMD for the last 10+ years with their Open Source Linux drivers, and I use an RX6800, so that could be the reason why I am having such a good experience. Still my gf has a 1050Ti, and that's also a good experience on her computer with Manjaro.
