It's so great to hear Dr. Don again after all these years. He got me off to a great start every morning when I was a kid listening to WFIL in Philly. There hasn't been anyone like him since.
From Sept 75 to Sept 78 I only listened to Dr Don on my Car radio or in the Barracks (Stationed at Moffett). I missed him when we were transferred to Spain and even Maine. I worked as a weekend DJ on a Country station and tried my version of Dr D. Failed horribly . Wish there would have been an internet back then, would have streamed it.
What memories! I listened to Dr. Don from 1974-1980, so often, especially on the school bus, which was a one hour ride. I lived 130 miles from SF, yet the signal was clear and strong. I always remembered how cheerful and funny he was.
I listened to him a lot in the late 70s. I emailed him in 2001 and he wrote back saying that my kind letter "warmed this old rock n roll DJ's heart!". :-)
Love Dr. Don Rose. Thanks for posting. I really miss him and KFRC's eclectic programming format of the 70s--a true radio representation of the Bay Area, sadly missing from the commercial airwaves now.
I remember when Dr. Don was a continuation announcer on CW50 during afternoon kids shows. Up here we still had the big 8, while our current two CHR FMs had flipped; one from elevator music to soft AC, the other from religion to secular AOR.
I worked as the Production man at the competition (KYA) for 8 years opposite Dr. Don. My radio was glued to him on the way in to work. I loved the production (I believe) Steve did, and Don was a World class announcer.
when he played Lionel Richie "Hello" the verse "She laughed at me" he'd have that Motley Dog laugh in that wheezing voice in the background. Loved it!!
I grew up in suburban Detroit, and I remember a guy named Dr. Don who would provide amusing commentary during the afternoon cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, and the sort)before and after the commercial breaks. This was in late 70's and early 80's I think. He would usually call himself Dr. Don, but I think I remember him using the name DR. Don Rose. He would speak in a goofy voice and read jokes sent in by local kids. He was always in voice-over, we never saw the Doc.
Wow... Blast from the past ... well not quite. I grew up listening to Dr. Don in the 70's. Very cool seeing him and hearing him again. Thank you. Rest in peace Dr. Don.
I remember waking up one morning in summer 1986 and Dr. Don was spinning up Tony Bennet and other big-band hits on the Magic 61! What!??!! The day before it was 610 KFRC, the next it was Magic 61! He shortly after went to KKIS. Life was never the same after that.....
Hello, does anyone know where I can get a clip of the "Good Morning" song they played in the mornings at KFRC in the 70's? These ladies sang it with a broken accent [almost German, maybe?], & they played it every weekday on the Dr. D Rose show while we were on the School bus for almost an hour drive. I used to sing it to my kids when they were little, & now today they sing it to their loved ones... I remember it from my childhood growing up in the Bay Area & wanted to take a trip with my siblings down memory-lane for my 55th & my older sister's 57th birthday on Saturday! It would mean soooo much if I could play it for our family on Saturday!!! Thank You! 🌹 R.I.P. Dr. Donald D. Rose!!! 🥀 We love you!!!
WFIL philly big misstep. Dr Don Rose went to LA accepting his broadcaster of the year award in 1973. They let him go without first signing him to a contract. Its like sending your unsigned starting QB to MVP award ceremony full of representives from competing teams. KFRC took advantage of the opportunity to make him an offer he could not refuse. By October 73, Dr Don signed off at WFIL, flew to bay area and never looked back. One could look back and say this was the beginning of the end for WFIL but AM radio was already on a short lifespan as FM began to evolve from "underground" to more competitive format.
My first time hearing an air check of the legendary Dr. Don. Air check? Oh, about a hundred and thirty-five p.s.i... ah HA, HA, Ha, Ha, Ha. This man had to make rising by the Bay almost a piece of cake. And that board op - George Zema? - what timing!
Oh Dr. Don you're such a son of a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Oh I miss those days in the Bay area in the late 70's ealry 80's when I was stationed on my first ship at NAS Alameda.
Refer to the comment previous. This guy I see in this video does not sound like the Don Rose I seem to recall, but I'd like to think he is. Whether or not he is my Dr. Don I'd like to hear from Detroiters, and former Detroiters, who remember the crazy guy of which I speak.
I miss him, He was my grandpa. I happen to be Dan Rosenbergs Son. Papa Don died when i was 10. miss him.
You couldn't live in the Bay Area during the 1970's without listening to Dr. Don at least once. Radio the way it should be. The Big 610 KFRC.

I remember DR in Duluth Minnesota when he was doing afternoons at WEBC AM 560 in the early 1960's! He was a hoot then!
@edybeast Agreed. I miss you Grandpa. See you in heaven.
I don't live in San Francisco, but I've heard his airchecks on the internet. I've learned that Dr. Don Rose was a TRUE master of Bay area radio!!

Yes that Don Rose I listen to him for many years and his Dog Rosco
“One of these days, Rose…POW! Right in the kisser!”
His accent is such a North Platte accent. He sounds like everyone else in that small town! It takes me back to Nebraska.
I am from the Bay Area and he was at KFRC AM 610.

Love this stuff! Anybody got airchecks from the late 1960's? (My golden years)

..the Days @ WFIL FamouS 56....Dr. Don!!
@Bluesjanet If you like vintage Top 40 airchecks, google reelradio. There are lots of airchecks there.
Does anybody have the Dr. Donald D Rose school lunch menu segments? Oh man, those were funny!
Too bad Dr. Don never got to play the DJ Sammy version of boys of summer. The girl singer is great.
Roscoe!
@sloanetarskavaig Unfortunately, something like this will never again. Society is continuing on its decline with the likes of Lady Gaga.
