  • This 1978 video is the companion project to the one Mike Brinks and I did for Bill Craig in the Theatre Arts Radio Department at San José State University on Dr. Don Rose at KFRC. Field audio on this one was recorded by Glen Pensinger.
The late Dr. Don and his engineer Steve Rude are seen throughout their daily shift on a rainy morning.
For you techies, the original footage was recorded on open-reel EIAJ half inch videotape, transferred to two inch quad tape, and then edited quad to quad, where there was only one channel of audio. So, the voiceovers are rolling wild off of a quarter inch audio tape player of the post-show interview, which he graciously arranged to be recorded off of his mike, with his processing.
Where there are tracks of the actual show feed, these came off of Dr. Don’s personal ¼ cassette recording, which he loaned to me. He uses this recording of just the parts of the show where his mike is on to document what jokes he tells.

LOVED this guy when I was a kid. He was hilarious! Listening to him in the morning was a GREAT way to start the day. He was a Bay Area institution. He was awesome. Also seemed like an incredibly decent man. I’m not lying when I say he was big part of the Bay Area culture. He was a great example of the overall zeitgeist of the time.

I started listening to KFRC and Dr. Don Rose in the fourth grade in 1974-75.
In the third grade there was a boy in my 3rd grade class (in Orinda, CA) with last name Rosenberg, don't remember his first name. One day after school I went to his house with him, and I remember meeting his father.
Well, the next year in fourth grade I started listening to Dr. Don Rose and KFRC and realized that the Rosenberg kid whose house I went to (he had since left my school) was Dr. Don's son and that the father I met was Dr. Don!

    • @christinaolson4769
      @christinaolson4769 4 года назад +11

That Rosenberg kid was one of my uncles. Dr Don was my papa. I’ve been looking through RUclips and google trying to find out stuff about him, and seeing what some people have to say is really cool. It gives me another perspective on what my papa was like other than the one my uncles and mom give.

  • @danieloswald844

Every time I look Dr Don up on RUclips and give him a listen I am transported back to a wonderful time period. The man was bigger than life and an absolute institution in radio. Easy to say he was a childhood hero.

OK. I'm 52 years old and like many comments here I listened to him in the late 70s while getting ready for 9th n 10th grade. I'd even record his show on my dad's 8-track deck. One time I recorded a tape and when listening back there was this annoying feedback being recorded along with the show. Took a while to figure out it was the dimmer switch on the kitchen light causing the interference. He was such a zany guy with his pals and that crazy dog Roscoe.
I also remember when he hosted cartoons on Channel 44 in the mid 70s.
    Great memories. Thanks for posting.

I grew up listening to Dr. Don. He woke me up every morning at 6:30 am. Then one morning in 1986, I wake up to big band music and I was confused. I thought someone had messed with my clock radio in the night. I let the song finish and Dr. Don came on, in a somber voice said something to the effect of “that was Tony Bennett. Now playing another big band hit on the Magic 61.” WTF?!?! I never listened to KFRC again. A year later, Dr. Don was on KKIS doing his old routine when I heard him say sadly “today is the one year anniversary of when KFRC bit the big one.” And proceeded to play American Pie - “The day the music died“. Life in the Bay Area was never quite the same after that. It was great to hear him again on KKIS, but it wasn’t quite the same. The culture of the Bay Area had been diminished by that change in programming. In an extremely small way, it was like going from September 10 to September 11, 2001. Obviously not the same by any stretch, but my daily routine was never the same again. Everyone all listened to Dr Don and KFRC. That sad morning in 1986 closed out my childhood as a 17 year old kid and was the beginning of my early adulthood. God bless you Dr. Don!! Thank you for the memories!

Hello, does anyone know where I can get a clip of the "Good Morning" song they played in the mornings at KFRC in the 70's? These ladies sang it with a broken accent [almost German, maybe?], & they played it every weekday on the Dr. D Rose show while we were on the School bus for almost an hour drive.
I used to sing it to my kids when they were little, & now today they sing it to their loved ones... I remember it from my childhood growing up in the Bay Area & wanted to take a trip with my siblings down memory-lane for my 55th & my older sister's 57th birthday on Saturday! It would mean soooo much if I could play it for our family on Saturday!!! Thank You! 🌹

I, too, was a big fan of Dr. Don on KFRC, first as a listener in '73 and '74 as a young teen in Pacifica and then in '79 as a deejay up the dial from him at KNBA the Mighty 1190 in Vallejo. And I was also a subscriber and occasional contributor to a weekly joke service called Fruitbowl, which was the work of a gentleman named Jay Tractman in Fresno, and I suspect Dr. Don was reading one-liners from it in this presentation--or at least using some of those lines and turning them into his own. And I got to hear Dr. Don use one of my lines in early '79 and it absolutely made my day. And Dr. Don made everybody's day--or at least their mornings--for years and years at KFRC. He was the quintessential Top-40 morning man and he was perfect for the Bay Area, surely one of the best of all time. And Roscoe was the best dog, for sure, except when he was tying up traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge.

You worked for Lou, too! My condolences. LOL, yeah, I was there myself in '86-'87. It's funny you mention Tractman because while I was up at KUIC, he was practically my PD's guru there. He was always copying articles Tractman wrote in Fruitbowl (which got changed to another name that I can't remember) and putting them in our mailboxes.

mxxjss Now that I look at it, I suspect you're right. Unfortunately, I don't have the slate on the front of the piece that would have given us the date. So I'll correct the information to 1978. It also makes sense because I remember that we did this piece several months after the one we did on Gordy at KFAT.

How I miss those days. The angry world needs something like this today. Don had the perfect radio voice.
The other voice I remember best was "Dennis Erectus" on KOME 98.5 FM

I sure do miss Dr. Don. I remember listening to him when I was just a kid both on KFRC and KBHK TV 44 San Francisco. What a blast from the past this was I totally enjoyed this video. Dr. Donald definitely one of a kind. I always wondered what happened to him. When I looked them up on Wikipedia I found out he had A heart attack while on the air. Kinda reminds me of Dale Summers “the truckin’ bozo “ On WLW Cincinnati, I just Jackie for TRUCKERS on the overnight. Sure miss these icons.

Ah, the wistful flood of memories this brings to mind where I heard Dr. Don's giggly voice during the 1970s and 80s over the radio as well as on television in between reruns of The Monkees or The Brady Bunch, etc.

I know Dr Don roos you should tell me what time it is even though I didn't have a wrist watch when I was a young teenager. As a matter of fact this way before I got my first wrist watch in 1976!

The worst thing WFIL Philadelphia did was let Don Rose leave. What a massive mistake, which accounted for their losing listeners and finally the station closing.

I just loved this guy, he always made my day. He made me laugh. He would call Sacramento, Sack of tomatoes, San Rafael, San Raquel. He was so funny. I truly miss him & this station.

Great memories of growing up in "the City" listening to Dr. Don. The radio station wasn't far from where I lived.
