      Batter thought he didn’t leave the crease but the bowler/captain forcefully appealed pressuring umpires to give it out. Mankad is a good rule, but only when batsmen get a huge head start and are half way down.

      @@sam.noster thanks for the context. Batsman getting a huge advantage or not, stay the crease is the rule.
      Can we say bowlers can step out of the crease a bit without having a huge advantage?
      Probably no, and we give them a no ball and free hit. So stay in the crease is the rule and ought to follow it.

      @@sam.noster Mankad may on the surface appear to be unsportsmanlike, even if it is in the rules........HOWEVER, it may become very subjective according to what the immediate situation is.
      For a real-life example that occurred last season in a team I coached (and most likely NOT uncommon), here is my view
      (ps I was loosely classified as a batsman many years ago).
      Two teams tied with 1 ball to go.
      Batter confers with non-striker to run no matter what.
      Non-striker can crib a few feet but then runs the risk of being mankadded, but instead keeps bat in the crease till the ball leaves the bowlers hand and then sprints down the pitch (nearly catching up with the ball !).
      The batter manages to make contact with the ball hits towards a fielder and takes off nearly as quickly, passing the non striker within a couple of meters.
      They achieve the single and win. HURRAH !!!
      OK, now a hypothetical situation, but quite believable.
      Exact same situation but with the non striker who cannot run as fast.
      Batter manages to make contact and hits ball towards a fielder.
      Non striker has deliberately walked out of his crease by 18inches but bowler doesn't notice and non striker starts running and gets to the crease just before the wicket keeper gets the ball back over the stumps from the fielder.
      QUESTIONS
      Would a mankad have been justified in that situation ?....... I believe YES. (If we are totally honest with ourselves it depends on who lost the game !)
      How many times in the course of a normal game has a non-striker gone for a quick single and just got in (line ball) at the other end after clearly cribbing a foot or so and then been given not out by Square Leg (too close to call and got the benefit of doubt !).
      There are some very nebulous areas in "Spirit of Cricket" and that is why rules have been set so the notion of subjectivity vs objectivity can be set aside and examples like the above are not an issue.
      Last century I was always taught to keep my bat grounded till the bowlers came over or risk walking back to the pavilion with a silly look on my face.
      cheers from down under

    The jury is out on "mankad" being "unsportsmanlike behavior", it is a legal mode of dismissal. There are those who argue that the non striking batsman who is out of his ground is guilty of unsportsmanlike" behavior, which is technically correct. Besides all of that, the backing up player didn't do anything to interfere with the batsman running that was wrong. Their skipper was obviously battling some demons of his own about his performance for him to erupt like that. Hopefully the league addresses it and the return fixture isn't a brawl?

    Great content. However, I disagree with your point of Mankad being unsportsmanlike. If it is within the law of cricket, how can you call it unfair? If anything, the batsman leaving the crease prior to the bowler bowling is unfair and unsportsmanlike as it gives him an unfair advantage and less yards to run for a run. Also, looking at the video it looks like number 10 had momentum going to the left of the crease and deliberately stops and moves his shoulders to the right in the direction of the batsmen running. Now this is what I would call UNSPORTSMANLIKE.

    • @Maximus-gi1ge
      @Maximus-gi1ge 3 месяца назад

      To your first point, that's just like ... your opinion man. Your second point, number 10 actually tried to get out of the runners way, while being in a position to back up the throw.

      @@Maximus-gi1ge Not sure how much or at what level you’ve played cricket, but for someone playing at elite level, I am assuming he knows what angles and trajectories of a throw is. As you can see the by the shot played by the batsmen that the ball goes to mid off as stated by sam. If the fielder throws the ball it will arrive at the stumps at 45 degree angle, its quite obvious that #10 stops at the middle of the pitch nowhere near the ball and later runs to the left where the ball will eventually reach. For someone thats played and watched cricket for some time now, it’s clear that the stoping in the middle of the pitch was deliberate and was due to the players being angry about the Mankad as expressed by Sam at the start of the video.

    • @sam.noster
      @sam.noster  3 месяца назад

      @@pacificimaging4251 Thank you for your comments! I appreciate it. And yes it is within the laws of the game. Although 99% of players learned cricket at a young age when backing up with the bowler was totally legal and ok to take a few steps down the wickets. It has since been an 'unwritten rule' to allow this even though the law has changed. It would be different if a non-striker was a long way down the wicket. In this instance (which I didn't mention in the video) the batter believed he never left the crease. The bowler is known to mankad, so when he performed it, the bowler desperately and forcefully appealed. The umpire was uncertain and quoted "I'm not 100 sure' according to the batsman, but even though there was doubt whether he left the crease or not, it was still given out. A few issues which led to all of us shaking our heads.

    • @sam.noster
      @sam.noster  3 месяца назад

      @@pacificimaging4251 In relation to the angles, it's hard to tell in the video. But the throw was slightly off + a bad bounce from an even surface. You can see the bowler run further to his left to cater for it. The player who supposedly gets in the way, only ever watches the thrower and the keeper's end, with no intent to care about the batter. He is not that kind of person. Bad timing I suppose. Thats cricket. Also, their running between wickets was terrible throughout the innings, and no one even thought about them coming back for 2! Either or, they were 50 for 8 at this stage so there didn't need to be this kind of behaviour anyway...
