I hope the devs see this and actually take these criticisms to heart and fix them before it releases (ESPECIALLY BAB SPECIMEN 9 MY GOD SO MUCH CHARM WAS LOST)

All I’ll say is the 2D models were SUPPOSED to be 2D. imo, it wasn’t a form of laziness or anything, it was to capture that old-school horror feeling. It gave the game more personality, charm, and made it stand out from other horror games. The fact they were 2D made them look even eerier and unsettling. Like, remember the deers you find in the woods? They were way scarier in 2D. I feel as though all the 3D models look way too cartoony imo and lose the feeling that made SJM famous in the first place.
To be fair with The Cat, the room it is shown off is THE final appearance it has before you deal with Specimen 7, so there's a chance that it is still fully solid at the start, but the deeper you go the more it starts to fade away as you go deal with your insanity
regarding specimen 13 now being visible in water, it takes away from her being a reference to the invisible water monster from amnesia edit: i know it's part of a rework they're doing for her chase and imo it absolutely does need a rework of some kind but i feel like the concept is held back just by the fact that it's the last one. after 11 much more active chases, a final one that necessarily requires you to be able to camp on the boxes is going to feel like an anticlimax no matter what they do
Might be a hot Take Here BUT i dont think it Matters because any Form of Immersion to be Had in this Chase is thrown Out the window due to the Chase Stretching for eternity. It Takes so Long and If specimen 13 is My First Encounter in endless i usually Just reset

Agree. Sure the old model looked hilariously ugly, but at least it looked a little scary and uncanny. The new one, while objectively better looking, looks more like a huggable plushie than anything scary.
my problem with the new models is how they almost completely erase all the stylistic dissonance from the original game, i much prefer how in the original all the specimens look like they were from completely different games
i liked game slowly escalating in horror entities become more and more terrifying, and now there is a bit of inconsistency from a bit scary goopy monster to bloody deer god that is one of the scariest for me as the Strawby, that irradiated dread and feeling of being alien with all this shading to stand out it is what i saw in old designs, only exceptions are dlcs, they are almost all great and terrifying without escalation, that made sense(except stupid ass baby and guard, but guard is at least funny) current one lean into being CONSISTENTLY creepy, but sometimes failing it
Honestly? I'm just amazed this game is even still relevant enough to be getting an update of this caliber. Though, it needs to be said: the boss form of Specimen 9 looks like you walked in on him when he was in the bathroom with a girlie magazine.

I love how you included me and Ryan J.'s reactions to the New Specimen 10 model. I will admit, when I first saw it, I lost my freaking mind. However, the improved textures were definitly an improvement in my opinion, and by the way, the walk cycle has been improved to some extent. In the video comparing the old and new Specimen 10 model, if you look closely at the animation shown off at the very end, you can see that it is definitely different from the one they originally showed off in the trailers. It's much less hoppy and more grounded, so it has definitely been improved to some extent. Either way, I do appreciate your in depth view of these models, as well as giving good constructive criticism. Also I do have something to say about your thoughts on the Cat. The Cat being transparent in my opinion actually helps it work with the idea of the Cat being in relation to Specimen 7. I personally never saw the cat as something that was supposed to be surreal, but rather as something that is spiritually connected to the wall. But I can definitely understand why you would feel the way you do about it. Also FWI, I like that you specified that nothing is final till it comes out. Because yes, until the update drops on steam and the physical releases are shipped, nothing is final.
As another Spooky’s fan, I gotta say this is a really well-done video! And yeah, I can definitely see your points about the Specimen redesigns. Personally I really like some of them like Specimen 8 and Specimen 13, for example. And as for some like 10 and 5, I think you hit the nail on the head about why the new designs aren’t as effective. And to be honest, I didn’t notice that about the White Cat until you brought it up! Also, I believe that the extra shaded Specimen 9 design (the one at about 12:04) you brought up is also seen in the Spooky’s Dollhouse DLC if you try to leave early; I don’t remember if I saw that design in the Hospital though, but I could be wrong! I unfortunately didn’t get to play the DLCs yet aside from Endless Mode.
You're correct, that shadded model of Specimen 9 was actually in the Dollhouse DLC. I must have misremembered where that model originated from. Good catch!
As a die hard specimen 5 fan, WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY QUEEN?!?!? I can see the vision of a more slimmer design, but they just ruined her 😭 I REALLY hope they revert Bab to her original state

my biggest problem with specimen 10 is that the new model takes completely away the "was once human" feeling of it, which was what made him scary for me, it was the idea of a parasite that torns and twists your flesh while you're alive until it turns you into "that", which you could really see with the very first model of him, with all that fleshy look of him and the mouth that was almost accurate to the size of his torso, it just looked so gruesome, but the new model just feels like a parody of that, with the exaggerated wing-sized mouth that just looks like it was made to scare an 8 yo, it doesn't feel humanoid anymore and more like some generic alien monster from a generic sci-fi movie, removing all of the personality the specimen once had, soecially because of the point of the chase, which is being forced to be near that thing in order to survive, always being on the edge of getting caught one way or other, which is torned down by the appereance and the walk animation
Imo what makes Bab/Specimen 5 herself was those polygons and strong esk manner to her design. Shes supposed to be a mix between the bobble head nurses and pyramid head, mannequin-likr design but also imposing, strong and dirtied. Along with the fact that she was polygonal in an otherwise 2D/drawn environment, much like what you pointed out with the cat, youre supposed to look at her and immidiely dedeuce "shes not supposed to be here". The lankyness could work for some other specimen or a new one, but not for Bab.
I think that the whole thing with the cat's transparency effect ruining the mystery of the cat, is the original cat is like Half Life 1 Gman, something so normal in a barely normal place, that that normalness becomes weird, but the transparency makes the cat fit in too much, the OG cat is apart of what i call The Juxtaposition Effect, where something that is normal, is in a abnormal place, and that comparably makes that normal being stranger, and vice versa.
Yeah, some of my scariest dreams were ones where one of my cats would be somewhere it makes no physical sense for them to be & just acting like it's normal & it would scare me so much I'd wake up almost immediately even though nothing dangerous happened. It's that feeling that something bad is gonna happen next & I don't know what it is.

the players have gotten too good at the game and now the specimens are running out of food to eat since everyone just escapes instead of dying horribly :(
I'm not too big a fan of what they did with the parasite. Before this, the jaws were unmoving. Like powerful tendons were keeping them stiff. But now it just looks like Dumbo. Another problem I have with the new one, is the size. The parasite was always a bit small compared to the other specimens, which to me better gave off the feeling of it being a brain-burrowing beast. Now it's just.. too large. Oh yeah, and the walk cycle? It's a powerful parasite trying to eat you, not some happy-go-lucky musical character.
You know what I would prefer that the parasite did? If the flesh in its mouth twitched a little to be clear not so much twitching that it looks like it’s having a seizure but just little twitches here and there I just think that would be cool but yeah I totally agree on the flaps moving too much
Personally I think that the mouth's shape is kinda goofy too, it expands too much. Either that or the skin around the mouth makes it look like elephant ears
I just realised, Specimen 11 now has COW legs! damn that little detail makes it better! and the fat also sorta shows you that it is sorta food demon/cow demon
I definitely think they should've just polished up the original 3D models, basically RTX-On'ed them and given them more grime where they're grimey and more gore where they're gory. Certainly some gripes I've had with the designs have been addressed, but more have been made and they mostly just look less imposing than before. I liked the 2D cause they allowed for greater detail, and I liked the 3D for immersion sake at the cost of some detail, so the best thing would've been to enhance the detail on the models and leave the general concept as they were
Poor hoolopee. it hurts to see him get hate for minor fuckups, because in all honesty the models look great. but it's obvious he just didn't understand what made the original designs work for some of them. him and everyone else on the development team do not deserve to be outright hated for it though.
I'll say that I'm honestly sad about deer Lord. The way the eyes are positioned makes him feel too goofy. the old model had his eyes sunk more in his head, giving him the feeling he was always looking at you, now I can't tell if he's looking at me or the wall to the right.
Considering Spooper's TRUE form is only revealed after the third time you hit him with the axe, I'd say it's actually a pretty funny and clever move on their part to ONLY show his "pre-axe-to-the-face" model. Leaves you wanting more while saying "yep, we gave this funny li'l fella a makeover too!" That said, I for one agree that The White Cat's 2D model of just An Oddly Out-Of-Place Cat with no gradient DEFINITELY hits different than the 3D model that seems to be getting the Bing-Bong treatment (if you know, you know). I also can't help but find myself hung up on how instead of the "neutral cartoon cat face with added eyelashes to suggest femininity" we see on the 2D model, her 3D model's eyelashes are visibly thicker and droopier, so now it looks more like she's giving you a tired, pitying smile (which in this case is strictly a downgrade. Part of the uncanniness was in the fact that she seemed rather chipper through the whole sequence, like she was actually enjoying giving you advice on how to keep your mind in one piece while traversing this hell-hole of a house). On a semi-related food-for-thought sort of note, do you think the spinning arrow and squirmy red things in the half-pink-half-yellow room will also be getting 3D models as well, or would the devs just leave them 2D (maybe with updated graphics) since they're limited to just
Just to note, Kira has confirmed that the weird purply-pink entity you see during Spooper's chase is a hallucination, that is NOT what Spooper actually looks like.

I have a habit of calling the hallucination "The True Spooper" in my head since afaik it doesn't have a specific name and I find it "Spoopier" than Spooper. My bad! 😅 (Regardless, I'm *still* glad we haven't seen what its new model looks like. I'm curious, but not curious enough to want to spoil it for myself!)
Especimen 5 is supossed to be "motherly", there is nothing motherly about that streched up funko pop with noodle legs. Also, what bites me the most about specimen 10 is the size of his jaws. They're so big that they look like a blanket, something funny when you consider the first one actually looked like it could open and close it's maw while the new one looks like it would flop around without closing. To me they should ticken up 5s body and shoulders, give Deerlord and Burguer demon a few extra inches and make 10s apendages have some sharp boney parts that give it structure, less like fatbags and more like stretched skin inbetween two bone rods.
12:00 the different model of specimen 9 is used in the doll house (if you try to leave before the self destruct sequence), the hospital uses his regular model although ive never even seen him in the hospital before so im unsure if he shows up (im pretty sure he does).
I don’t really like how much more animated a lot of the specimens are. The relative stiffness of the old 3D models made them feel more creepy and added to the sorta retro aesthetic the game has while the new animations just feel like it’s more detail for the sake of more detail and not because it was actually needed (also some of the new animations just look really goofy lmao)
the new ones are straight rubber hose cartoons with how extra the loop animation is, the original animation has more subtlety= making the scary characters scarier= therefore better animation. idk why some people see motion and are like "wow it moves more! that means its better!" even thought it goes directly against the point of the game more doesn't always mean better
that's my feelings exactly, the original sprites were grungy and stiff and it really meshed with the environment, then the original hd models were very accurate recreations of that in 3D. The new ones feel too clean and animated for the rest of the game's style, like unreal engine characters dropped in randomly. Also they just feel a bit too uniform
Better looking isn't always better, spooky's has an atmosphere to it, something that full 3d models may fail to encapsulate, the way they move is uncanny, but say the new specimen 2 is too... animated and filled out, this is true for many other models, although some look good, some I don't think the same. I mean, hell I prefer the 2d models a lot of the time even over original renovation
I feel like some flaws with the models were made because they don’t know how to model their stuff correctly. Which is something i kinda find very nice to know especially in this year.
These visual changes aren't what I want nor what I paid for so I don't understand why they're going to be irreversible. I seriously hope that they consider adding a feature that allows you to toggle between the original and redesigned models.
Specimen 5's new model proportions just reminds me of the Hazbin Hotel body type. I definitely preferred the original, it doesnt even look like the og version anymore
I’m actually really curious how Ringu’s evolved form will look. Since normal Ringu has a redesign and Endless is guaranteed to be in the game thanks to Otto and Spooper’s appearance, this means Evolved Ringu has to be in there and they can’t just use the old model since it doesn’t work nearly as well coming from the new Ringu model.
Most of the new models are really cool, but I wish that specimen 5 and 6 kept the low poly look as a reference to their respective source material.. I do like the new wood texture on specimen 6 though!
Slight error in this video, the second model that Specimen 9 has right now (not the SOUP one) actually appears in the Dollhouse, not Karamari Hospital.
Honestly the only model I don't like is 5, but it could totally be fixed by just making the shoulders wider and the silhouette more sharp and the removal of the eyesholes. There was one aspect about the old models animations specifically I really enjoyed though. It's walking animation was slower than it's actually walking speed, giving it an almost choppy appearance visually and to me made it feel almost like a claymation model or something. The new models animations lack that unfortunately, but I hope they make it work
Specimen 8 i can tell you having different proportions is definitely significant. Before he's 8-9 heads tall giving him a 'heroic' height, a scale that makes you lends towards the idea of majesty in addition to being supernatural. Just gliding along the floor further hints towards a kind of poise; he's not just some random spooky thing but a deity of the forest. The eyes also not staring straight forward, like a predator, but more off to the sides and wide like an actual deer hurts how threatening and imposing he looks. In general a lot of changes, especially to animations, make the specimens seem a lot more animalistic and feral instead of intentional and malicious. Like they're wild beasts instead who sometimes stalk but mostly frenzy at you instead of evil things that know exactly what they are and what they want to do to you.
I ain’t going to lie, the first thought that I had when I saw specimen 9’s new boss model was how he looks like he’s about to ask you if you got games on your phone 💀 Edit: since when do I have a hundred likes?
I will say what i liked alot is the monsters looked like they were plucked from there games, and i feel like some of that is lost in alot of the models
I'm not as big a fan of the puppet's redesign. A: It loses the reference the original was making. B: His face looks like Dio Brando to me for some reason.
The new model for Specimen 9's true form looks great, and the skinnier and more malnourished look of it fits Specimen 9's backstory, being a victim of Unit 731.
i personally think the body looks great, but that the head feels... not human enough to pass off as a victim of, yknow, human experimentation? i think if they just gave it a different head shaped more like the original ones on this new body, it would look brilliant, but as it is right now it feels like an entirely different specimen.

I think the redesign for specmine 9 is great, especially since he's more "human" looking I mean, remember, his room is a literal reference to ww2 human testing sites. The boss form is a lil wonk but I can see it working
They did Taker dirty. Dollhouse Taker is probably the specimen which scares me the most, seeing it come from the darkness with it's obscured features. Then there's new Taker. Probably scary in context but it doesn't beat the other one.
I have major nostalgia for SeriousNorbo’s models ever since they let them out for download on their DeviantArt and I messed around with them in Blender constantly from 2018 to 2020. They were so faithful to the original 2D sprites and I even remember they had an extra Specimen 6 with face bones from their “If Tirsiak Could Attack” animation that I absolutely adored. I appreciate the ones that have new unique features such as 8’s cloak and 11’s hooves and I will say I think the host of 12 and Otto are probably better, but other than that SeriousNorbo’s models are the ones for me, although the models for characters that didn’t have them before (Old 10, White Cat) are welcome with open arms.
i really like some of the new redesigns, like specimen 11 or otto, but, there is a lot of specimens that should continue with the old designs with just improvements and new animations

For me 2D in a 3D space just doesn't work mostly because im unable to not notice that it's a flat animated image coming after me, it feels very out of place, and thus, it completly disconnects me from the horror, the 3D models actually feel like they are things in the same space as me, and that's great. The only entities im fine being 2D are White Face because it literally comes from a pixelated horror game, that's how it looks oriignally, it's a digital entity, bla bla bla and the Wall of FFlesh becasue it being a whole ass wall gives you the idea this is some sort of wall or approaching floood or whatever that's just, consuming the place and chasing you, it benefits from being 2D because i can easily imagine "behind it" there's an ocean of more bodies and blood and gore and if it catches up to me, i'll be part of it, rather than knowing the 2D image is jsut going to pass by me and see the hollowness inside
The devs don't get it what made Spooky scary back then, we don't need fancy new graphics, what made Spooky good and charming was the 2d art and the whole indie kinda old school vibe the game originally had.
I think all of them (aside from 5 and 13's fish tail) are better in some way I especially like the specimen 10 model change because the bigger size and mouth makes it look more imposing which i think fits for something that forces you to walk slowly and stay close to it

@@quacker912 I mean Roblox takes heavy inspiration/Blatenly copying anything no? I’ve seen so many Roblox maps they’re like clones of other games like fnaf or phantom forces is battlefield. I wouldn’t really consider Roblox when thinking of spookys clones, but everyone’s different I’m sure there’s a granny copy on Roblox somewhere
@@making_pie8295Some of the clones like mentioned above (rooms, pressure, etc.) are actually really unique interpretations of the Soooky genre but yeah, those are only few from the thousand blatant and soulless copies out there.
I am in love with a majority of the specimens new models! Specially Specimen 8 who is my mewmew scrimblo (Although I don’t like how much skinnier he does look) but I was SOOOO amazed when I saw Specimen 11, out of all I genuinely think he got the biggest most gorgeous facelift ever (And he is absolutely NOT skinny, they really took into consideration he’s a *beef* monster and made him, well, beefy.) I am excited for this new update, I am SO going to be taking a billion pics of Deer Lord when it’s out!!!
yeah, bab, I see where they were going, but I do not like it. I hope they revert it to be more proportional to the original. should also mention, for inspiration I actually do think they kept a lot from the original. cause silent hill was heavy on symbolism and surrealism, so this run way model, holding a massive blade and has holes in there face, fits right in. Even under this lens the overly big head can be used to gather more about bab. Yes I know we already have a backstory, but that is also silent hilly, having an overarching story cover the deeper more human meanings beneath.
It's been a while i even heard of this game, i'm glad it still gets some updates from time to time, it brings back memories of me being amused by the first three Specimens, and then being extremely nauseous near the end of the game, while yelling at a let's player to run from the Specimens faster even thought he coudn't hear me. Although, like you said, not all the new models are good, but they mostly are, honestly. Here's my thoughts : - Specimen 2/Jello : Honestly he's one of my favorite new models, i really like his new animations too, and now he actually looks skeletal. That version of Jello actually reminded of how Seek emerges from the ground after the Hotel+ update in Doors, which is honestly kind of awesome ( yes, i really like Doors, don't judge me. ). 10/10, actually disturbing to look at. - Specimen 3/Spidey : I also like Spidey's new model, though i don't really like how oval his new head look, i prefer the shape of the old one. 9/10. - Specimen 4/Ringu : One of the models i like the least, but she's still somewhat okay. I don't really mind the pink dress and i like the new legs, as fully black legs didn't make much sense for me, but why, WHY on earth did they give her a more detailed cleavage ????!!! She was much better without any of that. 5/10, too much details at the wrong places. - Specimen 5/Strawy/Bab : I don't mind the new appearance, as i wasn't really a fan of the yellow-ish skin and polygonal body shape, but honestly, i think making her move like a track star was a bad idea. I feel like making her walk slower, less confident and more like she's stumbling would fit her more than... Uhh, this. 7/10, get off the runway, Strawy ! - Specimen 6/The -mask- erm puppet Merchant : He looks much scarier now, honestly, but the only thing i would change about him would be making the color of the wood he's made off lighter, like his original look, and make little segments on his arms and legs like real doll/puppets have, but i can live with that. 9/10, Farod as a reason to be scared of him now. - Specimen 7/The Wall of Flesh : One word, perfect. Before that upgrade, i had a hard time actually making out what he was supposed to be, but now, i can clearly see that this is a wall of screaming souls, and i love it. Reminds me of Gigyas. 10/10. - Specimen 8/Deer Lord : I don't like how they chibi-fied him, but i do like the new ribs and cape movement. He needs to be taller and thinner in my opinion. 7/10. - Specimen 9/The Taker ( normal form ) : I really like how he turned out, he looks more more threatening. Although i think they didn't had to dislocate his whole jaw in his "walking" animation. 9/10. - Specimen 9/The Taker ( boss form ) : I'm gonna be honest here, this looks absolutely horrendous. 1/10, horrible to look at, but unlike Jello, in a bad way. Like, really bad. - Specimen 10/The Parasite : I think his new unfixed animations are a little wonky, but other than that, i think his new design is awesome, even the untweaked one. I like the different teeth, the mouth, the skin, everything. This is the type of horror i adore to draw. 9/10, just don't make his skin wobble and he'll be fine. - Specimen 11/Bull Demon : My favorite remodel out of all Specimens, hands down. I always ad a beef ( pun intended ) against the way his horns looked, and THANK GOD they changed them, they look much, MUCH better. I also really like his new legs, as i always pictured him having hooves for some reason ( now this headcanon is valid, yayyy !!! ), as well as how muscular and fierce he looks now. I'm sure he would make even more players wanna throw up, with his backstory plus his new design to accompagn it. 10/10, might wanna get the barf bags ready, just in case. - Specimen 12/The Host/Instakill guy : I don't have a view of him good enough to really review his model, but he kind of looks good from what i've seen. 7/10, maybe ? I need more references. - Specimen 13/The Mermaid : I prefer the old model, although, her new model isn't terrible. I especially like the fact that now she's visible underwater. 6/10. - The White Cat : She's still very cute, i don't mid the transparent gradient at all. 10/10, would hug her till the end of time. Great Video! I didn’t even know some of the characters had their new designs shown yet. I will say I was little shocked on how nice were to the Specimen 9 Base Model and Specimen 11 considering how critical you were on Specimen 5 and 10 (the first redesign attempt). I’m not defending those 2 models, I think they were the worst of the batch we saw initially. It’s good to see that they gave 10 another shot it looks pretty solid now, hopefully 5 gets similar treatment, touching up her proportions and textures to make her feel intimidating and more akin the Silent Hill again. I don’t mind the holes on the face tho, really makes her feel closer to the Nurse + Pyramid hybrid look. As for Specimen 9 and 11 my main issues are kinda different between the 2. I don’t think 9’s design is that bad, though it does loose a lot of the reference it had. If you don’t know, the base form of 9 is based off of Red from NES Godzilla Creepypasta. That’s why it had it looked the way it did, both the textures, and how the face felt both human but wrong. I don’t mind the new model, it is arguably a bit more unnerving of a design, but I’ll miss the more inhuman look it had. That animation however, is just bad (in a trying to be scary sense). It’s way too fast and jittery and just comes off as goofy imo. The old animation was a little silly to be fair, but even then it was a little weird in a good way. You have this weird unflinching face just b-lining towards your general direction. I think it’s that added mouth movements that maje it not work for me. Specimen 11 I both hate and love. On one hand it is a really good model, but on the other hand, it has none of its charm. This is probably a me thing, but I loved how simple specimen 11 was. I could see how the design may be boring for some, but I think most of the impact comes from the mystery of 11. Why a demon for a fast food place? What connection do they have to the restaurant. Is 11 truly trying to kill you, it’s method of killing is unknown and the game over screen doesn’t really answer it either. I feel like it’s old simple design matches that. The new model is kinda like the new cat model. It ties it to theme too much, and its more ominous design sorta loses all that mystery to it. Again, it’s a great model, but I think it could work if it wasn’t for one thing: the animation. The new animation isn’t good in my opinion, it feels overly animated. I think the added bobbing is good to show that it is indeed traveling through the air. I just don’t understand why they made its hand has an animation of its own now. Much like Specimen 9 or 5’s animation, it just feels goofy. Comparing the animations, you have sprite versions shambling/floating toward you, seemingly horns first. The HD model float towards you, with its hand out, seemingly to grab you. This new one floats towards you much like the HD one, but instead of just having its hand reached you to grab you, it’s like, twiddling its own fingers for some reason. It just feels like a weird action to have 11 doing and isn’t as ominous as the previous 2 animations. I guess I was just expecting you have some criticisms of the animation I suppose. One little tod bit to add since you didn’t address it in the video is with specimen 13. While is neat to give them an animation now, having them be visible is not only less scary as you pointed out, but just 100% removes what it was a reference to. 13 was a reference to a monster in amnesia, who much like 13 was invisible and could only be tracked via splashes in the water. Hopefully if they do add a setting to toggle the model version (HD already allows you to toggle from models to sprites) hope they make where you can select which specimens you’d like to toggle or not. And if they don’t, I’m sure someone will as a mod for BYOM. Once again a great video and def earned my subscribe! And thanks if you give the comment a read!
While I certainly have my… *feelings* about all of the models, my controversial take is that I don’t like what they did to Specimen 7. I find the old version infinitely scarier and unnerving. The smiling is very uncomfortable with how distorted they are, it’s hard to tell if the wall itself morphed anguish into a sickening fake joy or if those trapped are laughing and smiling because there’s nothing else to do in that situation. And I enjoy how bright it is, but not necessarily for a horror purpose. Im just fond of weird things that hurt my eyes. The new version of Specimen 7 just feels… safe, I guess. It’s easier to understand a meat wall full of tormented souls crying out in pain than one where they’re seemingly laughing even as their jaws are distended. I don’t want to be killed by either of them, but the old one is something I **really** don’t want to die from. Specimen 11 was always my favorite though, so im glad he turned out to have the best (IMO) changes out of everybody. Not really enjoying most of the updates, but he looks GREAT.
i made a comment about this too! i like a lot of these new models, but i feel like the more stylized version of specimen 7 was so much more. freaky? it looked more like a Concept than something Real. a painting or photo, really old and pencilly and undefined. i dunno man, ive always been really attached to it and thought it was very artsy. i feel like if they just revamped it in the same style, you know made the anatomy part of it more obvious (bones, entrails), detailed the faces more, but kept the art style, it would be a lot more interesting and freaky. it also used to be a lot more like giygas! now its just. a real flesh wall.
I honestly just wish they'd give players the option to activate different models - ESPECIALLY 2D models. To this day, I think every single specimen, except for perhaps Ben and Spooper, look better in 2D than 3D. The current 3D-Models and the new, teasered ones are all inferior to the original vision.

All I’ll say is the 2D models were SUPPOSED to be 2D. imo, it wasn’t a form of laziness or anything, it was to capture that old-school horror feeling. It gave the game more personality, charm, and made it stand out from other horror games. The fact they were 2D made them look even eerier and unsettling. Like, remember the deers you find in the woods? They were way scarier in 2D. I feel as though all the 3D models look way too cartoony imo and lose the feeling that made SJM famous in the first place.

To be fair with The Cat, the room it is shown off is THE final appearance it has before you deal with Specimen 7, so there's a chance that it is still fully solid at the start, but the deeper you go the more it starts to fade away as you go deal with your insanity

entities become more and more terrifying, and now there is a bit of inconsistency
from a bit scary goopy monster to bloody deer god that is one of the scariest for me as the Strawby, that irradiated dread and feeling of being alien with all this shading to stand out
it is what i saw in old designs, only exceptions are dlcs, they are almost all great and terrifying without escalation, that made sense(except stupid ass baby and guard, but guard is at least funny)

I love how you included me and Ryan J.'s reactions to the New Specimen 10 model. I will admit, when I first saw it, I lost my freaking mind. However, the improved textures were definitly an improvement in my opinion, and by the way, the walk cycle has been improved to some extent. In the video comparing the old and new Specimen 10 model, if you look closely at the animation shown off at the very end, you can see that it is definitely different from the one they originally showed off in the trailers. It's much less hoppy and more grounded, so it has definitely been improved to some extent. Either way, I do appreciate your in depth view of these models, as well as giving good constructive criticism. Also I do have something to say about your thoughts on the Cat. The Cat being transparent in my opinion actually helps it work with the idea of the Cat being in relation to Specimen 7. I personally never saw the cat as something that was supposed to be surreal, but rather as something that is spiritually connected to the wall. But I can definitely understand why you would feel the way you do about it.
Also FWI, I like that you specified that nothing is final till it comes out. Because yes, until the update drops on steam and the physical releases are shipped, nothing is final.

As another Spooky’s fan, I gotta say this is a really well-done video! And yeah, I can definitely see your points about the Specimen redesigns. Personally I really like some of them like Specimen 8 and Specimen 13, for example. And as for some like 10 and 5, I think you hit the nail on the head about why the new designs aren’t as effective. And to be honest, I didn’t notice that about the White Cat until you brought it up!
Also, I believe that the extra shaded Specimen 9 design (the one at about 12:04) you brought up is also seen in the Spooky’s Dollhouse DLC if you try to leave early; I don’t remember if I saw that design in the Hospital though, but I could be wrong! I unfortunately didn’t get to play the DLCs yet aside from Endless Mode.

my biggest problem with specimen 10 is that the new model takes completely away the "was once human" feeling of it, which was what made him scary for me, it was the idea of a parasite that torns and twists your flesh while you're alive until it turns you into "that", which you could really see with the very first model of him, with all that fleshy look of him and the mouth that was almost accurate to the size of his torso, it just looked so gruesome, but the new model just feels like a parody of that, with the exaggerated wing-sized mouth that just looks like it was made to scare an 8 yo, it doesn't feel humanoid anymore and more like some generic alien monster from a generic sci-fi movie, removing all of the personality the specimen once had, soecially because of the point of the chase, which is being forced to be near that thing in order to survive, always being on the edge of getting caught one way or other, which is torned down by the appereance and the walk animation
Imo what makes Bab/Specimen 5 herself was those polygons and strong esk manner to her design. Shes supposed to be a mix between the bobble head nurses and pyramid head, mannequin-likr design but also imposing, strong and dirtied. Along with the fact that she was polygonal in an otherwise 2D/drawn environment, much like what you pointed out with the cat, youre supposed to look at her and immidiely dedeuce "shes not supposed to be here".
The lankyness could work for some other specimen or a new one, but not for Bab.
I think that the whole thing with the cat's transparency effect ruining the mystery of the cat, is the original cat is like Half Life 1 Gman, something so normal in a barely normal place, that that normalness becomes weird, but the transparency makes the cat fit in too much, the OG cat is apart of what i call The Juxtaposition Effect, where something that is normal, is in a abnormal place, and that comparably makes that normal being stranger, and vice versa.
Yeah, some of my scariest dreams were ones where one of my cats would be somewhere it makes no physical sense for them to be & just acting like it's normal & it would scare me so much I'd wake up almost immediately even though nothing dangerous happened. It's that feeling that something bad is gonna happen next & I don't know what it is.

I'm not too big a fan of what they did with the parasite.
Before this, the jaws were unmoving. Like powerful tendons were keeping them stiff. But now it just looks like Dumbo.
Another problem I have with the new one, is the size. The parasite was always a bit small compared to the other specimens, which to me better gave off the feeling of it being a brain-burrowing beast. Now it's just.. too large.
Oh yeah, and the walk cycle? It's a powerful parasite trying to eat you, not some happy-go-lucky musical character.
You know what I would prefer that the parasite did? If the flesh in its mouth twitched a little to be clear not so much twitching that it looks like it’s having a seizure but just little twitches here and there I just think that would be cool but yeah I totally agree on the flaps moving too much
Personally I think that the mouth's shape is kinda goofy too, it expands too much. Either that or the skin around the mouth makes it look like elephant ears

Ironically, Specimen 6's wooden texture is reminiscent of how Skull Kid was censored, so it still works
I feel like some of the stiffness made it creepier.
Definitely, it feels overanimated now, like they're kinda just caricatures of themselves.
I definitely think they should've just polished up the original 3D models, basically RTX-On'ed them and given them more grime where they're grimey and more gore where they're gory. Certainly some gripes I've had with the designs have been addressed, but more have been made and they mostly just look less imposing than before. I liked the 2D cause they allowed for greater detail, and I liked the 3D for immersion sake at the cost of some detail, so the best thing would've been to enhance the detail on the models and leave the general concept as they were
Poor hoolopee. it hurts to see him get hate for minor fuckups, because in all honesty the models look great. but it's obvious he just didn't understand what made the original designs work for some of them. him and everyone else on the development team do not deserve to be outright hated for it though.
I'll say that I'm honestly sad about deer Lord. The way the eyes are positioned makes him feel too goofy. the old model had his eyes sunk more in his head, giving him the feeling he was always looking at you, now I can't tell if he's looking at me or the wall to the right.
REAL! I noticed that too- the eyes mixed with the more stubby proportions made them far less imposing then how they were.
Considering Spooper's TRUE form is only revealed after the third time you hit him with the axe, I'd say it's actually a pretty funny and clever move on their part to ONLY show his "pre-axe-to-the-face" model. Leaves you wanting more while saying "yep, we gave this funny li'l fella a makeover too!"
That said, I for one agree that The White Cat's 2D model of just An Oddly Out-Of-Place Cat with no gradient DEFINITELY hits different than the 3D model that seems to be getting the Bing-Bong treatment (if you know, you know).
I also can't help but find myself hung up on how instead of the "neutral cartoon cat face with added eyelashes to suggest femininity" we see on the 2D model, her 3D model's eyelashes are visibly thicker and droopier, so now it looks more like she's giving you a tired, pitying smile (which in this case is strictly a downgrade. Part of the uncanniness was in the fact that she seemed rather chipper through the whole sequence, like she was actually enjoying giving you advice on how to keep your mind in one piece while traversing this hell-hole of a house).
On a semi-related food-for-thought sort of note, do you think the spinning arrow and squirmy red things in the half-pink-half-yellow room will also be getting 3D models as well, or would the devs just leave them 2D (maybe with updated graphics) since they're limited to just

Especimen 5 is supossed to be "motherly", there is nothing motherly about that streched up funko pop with noodle legs.
Also, what bites me the most about specimen 10 is the size of his jaws. They're so big that they look like a blanket, something funny when you consider the first one actually looked like it could open and close it's maw while the new one looks like it would flop around without closing.
To me they should ticken up 5s body and shoulders, give Deerlord and Burguer demon a few extra inches and make 10s apendages have some sharp boney parts that give it structure, less like fatbags and more like stretched skin inbetween two bone rods.

12:00 the different model of specimen 9 is used in the doll house (if you try to leave before the self destruct sequence), the hospital uses his regular model although ive never even seen him in the hospital before so im unsure if he shows up (im pretty sure he does).
I don’t really like how much more animated a lot of the specimens are. The relative stiffness of the old 3D models made them feel more creepy and added to the sorta retro aesthetic the game has while the new animations just feel like it’s more detail for the sake of more detail and not because it was actually needed (also some of the new animations just look really goofy lmao)
the new ones are straight rubber hose cartoons with how extra the loop animation is, the original animation has more subtlety= making the scary characters scarier= therefore better animation.
idk why some people see motion and are like "wow it moves more! that means its better!" even thought it goes directly against the point of the game

that's my feelings exactly, the original sprites were grungy and stiff and it really meshed with the environment, then the original hd models were very accurate recreations of that in 3D. The new ones feel too clean and animated for the rest of the game's style, like unreal engine characters dropped in randomly. Also they just feel a bit too uniform
Better looking isn't always better, spooky's has an atmosphere to it, something that full 3d models may fail to encapsulate, the way they move is uncanny, but say the new specimen 2 is too... animated and filled out, this is true for many other models, although some look good, some I don't think the same. I mean, hell I prefer the 2d models a lot of the time even over original renovation

I feel like some flaws with the models were made because they don’t know how to model their stuff correctly. Which is something i kinda find very nice to know especially in this year.
These visual changes aren't what I want nor what I paid for so I don't understand why they're going to be irreversible. I seriously hope that they consider adding a feature that allows you to toggle between the original and redesigned models.

Since normal Ringu has a redesign and Endless is guaranteed to be in the game thanks to Otto and Spooper’s appearance, this means Evolved Ringu has to be in there and they can’t just use the old model since it doesn’t work nearly as well coming from the new Ringu model.
i do hope that whiteface isnt gonna be remastered concidering where he came from even after it got remastered, still has that same 2d sprite

Most of the new models are really cool, but I wish that specimen 5 and 6 kept the low poly look as a reference to their respective source material.. I do like the new wood texture on specimen 6 though!

Honestly the only model I don't like is 5, but it could totally be fixed by just making the shoulders wider and the silhouette more sharp and the removal of the eyesholes.
There was one aspect about the old models animations specifically I really enjoyed though. It's walking animation was slower than it's actually walking speed, giving it an almost choppy appearance visually and to me made it feel almost like a claymation model or something.
The new models animations lack that unfortunately, but I hope they make it work
It's total art style erasure. Speciman 5 used to look like it was from a PS1 game and now it's just some generic blender model.

Spooky's Jumpscare Update: Where everyone went on a diet for some reason
Specimen 8 i can tell you having different proportions is definitely significant. Before he's 8-9 heads tall giving him a 'heroic' height, a scale that makes you lends towards the idea of majesty in addition to being supernatural. Just gliding along the floor further hints towards a kind of poise; he's not just some random spooky thing but a deity of the forest. The eyes also not staring straight forward, like a predator, but more off to the sides and wide like an actual deer hurts how threatening and imposing he looks.
In general a lot of changes, especially to animations, make the specimens seem a lot more animalistic and feral instead of intentional and malicious. Like they're wild beasts instead who sometimes stalk but mostly frenzy at you instead of evil things that know exactly what they are and what they want to do to you.

I will say what i liked alot is the monsters looked like they were plucked from there games, and i feel like some of that is lost in alot of the models

The new model for Specimen 9's true form looks great, and the skinnier and more malnourished look of it fits Specimen 9's backstory, being a victim of Unit 731.
i personally think the body looks great, but that the head feels... not human enough to pass off as a victim of, yknow, human experimentation? i think if they just gave it a different head shaped more like the original ones on this new body, it would look brilliant, but as it is right now it feels like an entirely different specimen.

They did Taker dirty. Dollhouse Taker is probably the specimen which scares me the most, seeing it come from the darkness with it's obscured features. Then there's new Taker.

I have major nostalgia for SeriousNorbo’s models ever since they let them out for download on their DeviantArt and I messed around with them in Blender constantly from 2018 to 2020. They were so faithful to the original 2D sprites and I even remember they had an extra Specimen 6 with face bones from their “If Tirsiak Could Attack” animation that I absolutely adored.
I appreciate the ones that have new unique features such as 8’s cloak and 11’s hooves and I will say I think the host of 12 and Otto are probably better, but other than that SeriousNorbo’s models are the ones for me, although the models for characters that didn’t have them before (Old 10, White Cat) are welcome with open arms.
i really like some of the new redesigns, like specimen 11 or otto, but, there is a lot of specimens that should continue with the old designs with just improvements and new animations

If someone told me the old specimen 3 was scarier than the 3D model I would have laughed at their face. 2D feels pretty overrated to me.
For me 2D in a 3D space just doesn't work mostly because im unable to not notice that it's a flat animated image coming after me, it feels very out of place, and thus, it completly disconnects me from the horror, the 3D models actually feel like they are things in the same space as me, and that's great.
The only entities im fine being 2D are White Face because it literally comes from a pixelated horror game, that's how it looks oriignally, it's a digital entity, bla bla bla
and the Wall of FFlesh becasue it being a whole ass wall gives you the idea this is some sort of wall or approaching floood or whatever that's just, consuming the place and chasing you, it benefits from being 2D because i can easily imagine "behind it" there's an ocean of more bodies and blood and gore and if it catches up to me, i'll be part of it, rather than knowing the 2D image is jsut going to pass by me and see the hollowness inside
The devs don't get it what made Spooky scary back then, we don't need fancy new graphics, what made Spooky good and charming was the 2d art and the whole indie kinda old school vibe the game originally had.
I think all of them (aside from 5 and 13's fish tail) are better in some way
I especially like the specimen 10 model change because the bigger size and mouth makes it look more imposing which i think fits for something that forces you to walk slowly and stay close to it

From what I've heard the new specimen 8 model is actually easier to animate since it's rig isn't a mess.

I am in love with a majority of the specimens new models! Specially Specimen 8 who is my mewmew scrimblo (Although I don’t like how much skinnier he does look) but I was SOOOO amazed when I saw Specimen 11, out of all I genuinely think he got the biggest most gorgeous facelift ever (And he is absolutely NOT skinny, they really took into consideration he’s a *beef* monster and made him, well, beefy.)
I am excited for this new update, I am SO going to be taking a billion pics of Deer Lord when it’s out!!!
yeah, bab, I see where they were going, but I do not like it. I hope they revert it to be more proportional to the original.
should also mention, for inspiration I actually do think they kept a lot from the original. cause silent hill was heavy on symbolism and surrealism, so this run way model, holding a massive blade and has holes in there face, fits right in. Even under this lens the overly big head can be used to gather more about bab. Yes I know we already have a backstory, but that is also silent hilly, having an overarching story cover the deeper more human meanings beneath.

Specimen 11 is the average BK worker after getting yelled at by a karen
It's been a while i even heard of this game, i'm glad it still gets some updates from time to time, it brings back memories of me being amused by the first three Specimens, and then being extremely nauseous near the end of the game, while yelling at a let's player to run from the Specimens faster even thought he coudn't hear me. Although, like you said, not all the new models are good, but they mostly are, honestly. Here's my thoughts :
- Specimen 2/Jello : Honestly he's one of my favorite new models, i really like his new animations too, and now he actually looks skeletal. That version of Jello actually reminded of how Seek emerges from the ground after the Hotel+ update in Doors, which is honestly kind of awesome ( yes, i really like Doors, don't judge me. ). 10/10, actually disturbing to look at.
- Specimen 3/Spidey : I also like Spidey's new model, though i don't really like how oval his new head look, i prefer the shape of the old one. 9/10.
- Specimen 4/Ringu : One of the models i like the least, but she's still somewhat okay. I don't really mind the pink dress and i like the new legs, as fully black legs didn't make much sense for me, but why, WHY on earth did they give her a more detailed cleavage ????!!! She was much better without any of that. 5/10, too much details at the wrong places.
- Specimen 5/Strawy/Bab : I don't mind the new appearance, as i wasn't really a fan of the yellow-ish skin and polygonal body shape, but honestly, i think making her move like a track star was a bad idea. I feel like making her walk slower, less confident and more like she's stumbling would fit her more than... Uhh, this. 7/10, get off the runway, Strawy !
- Specimen 6/The -mask- erm puppet Merchant : He looks much scarier now, honestly, but the only thing i would change about him would be making the color of the wood he's made off lighter, like his original look, and make little segments on his arms and legs like real doll/puppets have, but i can live with that. 9/10, Farod as a reason to be scared of him now.
- Specimen 7/The Wall of Flesh : One word, perfect. Before that upgrade, i had a hard time actually making out what he was supposed to be, but now, i can clearly see that this is a wall of screaming souls, and i love it. Reminds me of Gigyas. 10/10.
- Specimen 8/Deer Lord : I don't like how they chibi-fied him, but i do like the new ribs and cape movement. He needs to be taller and thinner in my opinion. 7/10.
- Specimen 9/The Taker ( normal form ) : I really like how he turned out, he looks more more threatening. Although i think they didn't had to dislocate his whole jaw in his "walking" animation. 9/10.
- Specimen 9/The Taker ( boss form ) : I'm gonna be honest here, this looks absolutely horrendous. 1/10, horrible to look at, but unlike Jello, in a bad way. Like, really bad.
- Specimen 10/The Parasite : I think his new unfixed animations are a little wonky, but other than that, i think his new design is awesome, even the untweaked one. I like the different teeth, the mouth, the skin, everything. This is the type of horror i adore to draw. 9/10, just don't make his skin wobble and he'll be fine.
- Specimen 11/Bull Demon : My favorite remodel out of all Specimens, hands down. I always ad a beef ( pun intended ) against the way his horns looked, and THANK GOD they changed them, they look much, MUCH better. I also really like his new legs, as i always pictured him having hooves for some reason ( now this headcanon is valid, yayyy !!! ), as well as how muscular and fierce he looks now. I'm sure he would make even more players wanna throw up, with his backstory plus his new design to accompagn it. 10/10, might wanna get the barf bags ready, just in case.
- Specimen 12/The Host/Instakill guy : I don't have a view of him good enough to really review his model, but he kind of looks good from what i've seen. 7/10, maybe ? I need more references.
- Specimen 13/The Mermaid : I prefer the old model, although, her new model isn't terrible. I especially like the fact that now she's visible underwater. 6/10.
- The White Cat : She's still very cute, i don't mid the transparent gradient at all. 10/10, would hug her till the end of time.

Great Video! I didn’t even know some of the characters had their new designs shown yet.
I will say I was little shocked on how nice were to the Specimen 9 Base Model and Specimen 11 considering how critical you were on Specimen 5 and 10 (the first redesign attempt). I’m not defending those 2 models, I think they were the worst of the batch we saw initially. It’s good to see that they gave 10 another shot it looks pretty solid now, hopefully 5 gets similar treatment, touching up her proportions and textures to make her feel intimidating and more akin the Silent Hill again. I don’t mind the holes on the face tho, really makes her feel closer to the Nurse + Pyramid hybrid look.
As for Specimen 9 and 11 my main issues are kinda different between the 2. I don’t think 9’s design is that bad, though it does loose a lot of the reference it had. If you don’t know, the base form of 9 is based off of Red from NES Godzilla Creepypasta. That’s why it had it looked the way it did, both the textures, and how the face felt both human but wrong. I don’t mind the new model, it is arguably a bit more unnerving of a design, but I’ll miss the more inhuman look it had. That animation however, is just bad (in a trying to be scary sense). It’s way too fast and jittery and just comes off as goofy imo. The old animation was a little silly to be fair, but even then it was a little weird in a good way. You have this weird unflinching face just b-lining towards your general direction. I think it’s that added mouth movements that maje it not work for me.
Specimen 11 I both hate and love. On one hand it is a really good model, but on the other hand, it has none of its charm. This is probably a me thing, but I loved how simple specimen 11 was. I could see how the design may be boring for some, but I think most of the impact comes from the mystery of 11. Why a demon for a fast food place? What connection do they have to the restaurant. Is 11 truly trying to kill you, it’s method of killing is unknown and the game over screen doesn’t really answer it either. I feel like it’s old simple design matches that. The new model is kinda like the new cat model. It ties it to theme too much, and its more ominous design sorta loses all that mystery to it. Again, it’s a great model, but I think it could work if it wasn’t for one thing: the animation. The new animation isn’t good in my opinion, it feels overly animated. I think the added bobbing is good to show that it is indeed traveling through the air. I just don’t understand why they made its hand has an animation of its own now. Much like Specimen 9 or 5’s animation, it just feels goofy. Comparing the animations, you have sprite versions shambling/floating toward you, seemingly horns first. The HD model float towards you, with its hand out, seemingly to grab you. This new one floats towards you much like the HD one, but instead of just having its hand reached you to grab you, it’s like, twiddling its own fingers for some reason. It just feels like a weird action to have 11 doing and isn’t as ominous as the previous 2 animations. I guess I was just expecting you have some criticisms of the animation I suppose.
One little tod bit to add since you didn’t address it in the video is with specimen 13. While is neat to give them an animation now, having them be visible is not only less scary as you pointed out, but just 100% removes what it was a reference to. 13 was a reference to a monster in amnesia, who much like 13 was invisible and could only be tracked via splashes in the water. Hopefully if they do add a setting to toggle the model version (HD already allows you to toggle from models to sprites) hope they make where you can select which specimens you’d like to toggle or not. And if they don’t, I’m sure someone will as a mod for BYOM.

While I certainly have my… *feelings* about all of the models, my controversial take is that I don’t like what they did to Specimen 7. I find the old version infinitely scarier and unnerving. The smiling is very uncomfortable with how distorted they are, it’s hard to tell if the wall itself morphed anguish into a sickening fake joy or if those trapped are laughing and smiling because there’s nothing else to do in that situation. And I enjoy how bright it is, but not necessarily for a horror purpose. Im just fond of weird things that hurt my eyes. The new version of Specimen 7 just feels… safe, I guess. It’s easier to understand a meat wall full of tormented souls crying out in pain than one where they’re seemingly laughing even as their jaws are distended. I don’t want to be killed by either of them, but the old one is something I **really** don’t want to die from.
Specimen 11 was always my favorite though, so im glad he turned out to have the best (IMO) changes out of everybody. Not really enjoying most of the updates, but he looks GREAT.
i made a comment about this too! i like a lot of these new models, but i feel like the more stylized version of specimen 7 was so much more. freaky? it looked more like a Concept than something Real. a painting or photo, really old and pencilly and undefined. i dunno man, ive always been really attached to it and thought it was very artsy. i feel like if they just revamped it in the same style, you know made the anatomy part of it more obvious (bones, entrails), detailed the faces more, but kept the art style, it would be a lot more interesting and freaky. it also used to be a lot more like giygas! now its just. a real flesh wall.
I honestly just wish they'd give players the option to activate different models - ESPECIALLY 2D models. To this day, I think every single specimen, except for perhaps Ben and Spooper, look better in 2D than 3D. The current 3D-Models and the new, teasered ones are all inferior to the original vision.
