  • Today we fly our 1964 Piper Cherokee 2000 miles across the country in just 2 days. We're flying it to Michigan to go pick up another plane (reveal coming soon). On the way, turns out we were being tracked by the Police and DEA. They "pulled us over" and had a word with us. We bought this plane sight unseen at auction and have flown it all around the country. Last video it did break down but ended up being a simple fix. This is one of the best single engine piston planes!

    Sure go fly any chance you get but keep the priorities straight. You're not in the time building phase. You're in the learn how to fly phase. And that means lots of boring pattern work and maneuvers in addition to learning how to plan and execute cross countries. And you're definitely going to need a regular cfi to help you make progress and get you from phase to phase. You won't make much progress just flying with different random instructors. If you're actually serious about passing a checkride, quit being so impulsive, keep the one working plane you seem to have (appropriate for training at least) and train all the boring tedious stuff until you can solo and then take a checkride. Schedule it now so you will have pressure to focus and get it done. This channel will be infinitely more interesting if you guys start making real progress on your flying skills and then can fly planes on your own. You will have so much more insight into the flying you're doing and it will make for better stories.

      "And you're definitely going to need a regular cfi to help you make progress and get you from phase to phase. You won't make much progress just flying with different random instructors." THIS! A THOUSAND TIMES THIS! Speaking from personal experience. "Real life," plus that issue caused it to take me FOUR YEARS to get my VFR PPL! Related note: If you're working with an actual flight school, make darn sure it's reputable and maybe even find out where the money behind it came from.

    • @danielreuter2565
      @danielreuter2565 3 месяца назад +11

      @@PensacolaOboist it took me 2.5 years with multiple stops because I lost motivation. It felt like I wasn't making progress. I had a regular CFI but he was very disorganized. There was no plan to help me finish. And I didn't know enough at that point to make a plan for myself. It took firing that CFI and studying the ACS thoroughly to generate a self training plan. Then I found another cfi to coach me through refining the training I had been doing on my own. This was in my own plane, which makes it much more challenging to get an organized plan since it's an unfamiliar plane to a CFI and outside their normal workflow at a flight school. Anyone who is going to train in their own plane has to really take the lead on their training. Make a plan and get a cfi who can help you execute it. Or tell you that it's a bad plan and actively help make a better one. IE: almost none of the cross country flying you're doing (the way you're doing it, at least) is going to prepare you to pass a checkride. Read the ACS. Seriously just start there.

    • @PensacolaOboist
      @PensacolaOboist 3 месяца назад

      @@danielreuter2565 I totally feel your pain. I didn't lose motivation but I had to deal with work, COVID, and a couple minor medical things that I had to clear up with the FAA. Plus, I lost my original flight school to Hurricane Sally! I signed up with another school that I soon discovered had a suspiciously high attrition rate with CFIs and I was in the same boat as you, twisting in the wind with no idea what to do. I knew so little... and nobody was helping! Cutting out a lot of boring details, I finally got over the PPL finish line after a former employee of my 2nd school put me in touch with a Chief CFI of another much more reputable school who then handed me off to a freelance CFI friend of his who specialized in "fixing" students in my (our) situation.

Let your lawyer do everything for you instead because you flying across country is not suspicious and nor is it any of the DEA’s business nor the Governments. We do not live in a police state.

    When paint dries, the majority of the weight evaporates. So, if a gallon of fuel weighs 9 lbs, dried paint is probably closer to 4 lbs. So, if it takes three gallons, then about 12 lbs total when dry. Honestly, I would think that maintaining the shine of polished aluminum (though WAY cool!) is more of an issue than the weight saved.
    Meanwhile, It's hard to do, but I really wish you could put the cops in their place and tell them to leave y'all alone without PC. This is harassment. Harder to defy their pseudo-authority as Feds, but still they need to stay within the bounds of the Constitution.

    12:16 You can buy used oxygen concentrators on the internet. When old people pass away, their family get rid of them for almost nothing.
    You can buy oxygen bottles and fill them from the concentrators
    Simply carrying a couple of oxygen bottles with mask, you could easily fly with your own supply
    And since you're not an old person, you don't have to be breathing like 90% oxygen, I'm sure you could get some sort of a mixing valve, so that the oxygen was closer to sea level
    I just looked it up, $100 for an oxygen concentrator that provides 8 l of 90% pure oxygen per minute

    • @cjfortin
      @cjfortin 2 месяца назад

      If you are talking about using low pressure oxygen bottles like those for aviation, you cannot fill them from a concentrator. One of the best concentrator out there only has an output pressure of 20 PSIG.

A charter company I flew for back in the 80's had a 401 that had the O-Fish-AL "Waterbeds R US" modification taps on the fuel system... It was able to Fly to Columbia without an issue. The government had a long long history of that airplane suspected of drug hauling. One of our pilots was flying a Canadian Fishing Charter and had a nice long conversation with the Feds. Your N-Number may have flags on it... Whenever it moves things will light up. Also, the PIC on flight plans gets "Historic" right along with the aircraft... Living and basing so close to the Mexican Border won't help you much that's for sure.

It got stuck and they couldn't pull it. Just something you might want to be careful about when you set your iPad on your lap. He couldn't reach the iPad because of the tight quarters of the cockpit. I'd recommend you lanyard if you're going to leave it loose especially if you hit turbulence and you lose it. Unfortunately they didn't survive.

    The trooper caper was the dumbest police work I've ever witnessed. Especially with DEA involvement. A simple media search and one local agent to your area doing 30 minutes of leg work would have stopped the stupid before it started. Not everything can be solved on a computer screen. They are only as smart as the men who programmed them lol. Good luck guys. Heres hoping for clear skies and tailwinds on the return trip ! Good luck. Oh the new plane? Yea i would know that sharp tail on that ac anywhere

    Guys you are ridiculous, telling and selling us, to make progress in flying while the cfi does all the work. You still can’t land the plane after such a long time, doing this. Please don’t fool us and yourself. Take a real flight school, take it serious and get your license not with almost only travel flying by cfi. Will help you making serious progress. This here is pure show. The content is nice, charming, funny, the videos make sense. But it’s about time to get serious with your license. Hard to believe, you guys seriously try to make pilots out of you guys. 😊

    Just as well you didn't have any bulk cash for buying the next aircraft or you'd know all about civil asset forfeiture. Rural Texas is only slightly better than Mexico. They had no reason to stop you, they could find out who you are from the registration.

    My question is, with that analog instrument panel, are you only using a cell phone for navigation, VOR hopping, or do you have hand held paper VFR sectionals in the aircraft to navigate?

    the real question is how any of these guys don't have their ticket?? all the planes.. all the time.. access to CFIs.. fuel.. aircraft.. money... what could hold up a 40 hour requirement?? they don't seem to be particularly stupid... passing a written, checkride, flying off a few hours.. boom.. you are licensed.. a trained monkey could do it.. for these guys, it's been literally years.. and these guys are still hauling around various cfi's to get their purchases home and ferried around.. why, if they are "building time", is he sitting right seat.. why isn't he flying more? i see him working th radios some.. calculating fuel burns, etc.. but hardly ever see him handling a yoke? shooting an approach? pattern work? at what point do we man up and fly?? and when you are getting your PPL, x-country time is great... but hours at cruise isn't getting him the experience he needs to be proficient when it matters.. i have to question their entire training path.. if they are struggling to demonstrate airmanship, maybe they shouldn't be flying? is that it? i can only speculate, but to think that average guys with what seems like at least average capabilities.. maybe above.. why is it taking them forever to get licensed? why would they even want to delay? makes no sense... unless... well... i won't speculate.. i like the kids, but it makes me wonder why... since on YT you only get the parts they show.. maybe they are choosing to hide why they haven't just got the basics covered.. with their resources.. they should all be at least private/instrument.. if not commercial, ME/I.. seriously.. WTaF?

    I think air travel is the future of transportation. At some point, some super smart entrepreneur will find a way to make it more affordable and sustainable and more people will travel by air, have deliveries made by drones or other craft. Electric powered drones for short term travel and delivery.

    You crossed thru my state I live in Peoria,IL KPIA is where I keep my 1960 beechcraft Debonair. Word of advice on the High alt it is pressure alt for the oxygen. I found that out the hard way flying out west at 9,500 My pulse ox got down to 67. I was some where over texas. I figured out the pressure alt for oxygen from local pilot out in new Mexico. Make sure you are carrying a pulse ox with you keep and Eye on it. It will sneak up on you and can bit you in the butt. I do have a portable oxygen system but I did not have it ready because I didn't think I needed it tell I was flying above 12,500 MSL. With the temp. out side I ran the numbers my pressure alt was 13,000. I was new to using the oxygen system. After that issue I will be using oxygen more often I see the benefits.

      I think you might be getting density and pressure altitude mixed up. Safe oxygen levels do depend on pressure altitude not density altitude but pressure altitude is not affected by temperature.
