I'd like to see Beringer just put in an extra $8 into each pedal to give them a metal casing. Obviously we in the user end could do that ourselves but, it would be nice to have that quality there

I watched this video a few times, as well as a few others on the same pedal. Johnny, this is a keeper, as always keep up the good work. Sorry to hear about panda Cat
I've used this pedal off an on for years and it does the job for the most part. I recently switched back to it when my Billy Sheehan EBS pedal crapped the bed.
Many years ago "15 or so" I played in a technical death metal band. I started using one of these for my live shows and the soundmen were happy. My band opened for Immolation and I used the pedal for that show. Sounded AWESOME. I still have the pedal and still use it.
I have been using a SansAmp ever since the days when making such a purchase meant not eating for a few days. I must state now; I have never "out-grown" it. I am never without it. Not long ago, I demo 'ed a BDI21. Had this Behringer been available to me during those times, I would have eaten much better that week and I doubt anyone would have noticed any difference in the band.
I have the same Behringer DI pedal that i haven't used since i got it 6yrs ago.. I'm now about to get into it after watching this video using my looper pedal.
I always heard about the constructive weakness of the behringer's pedals, but 'till now I've never see a smashed behringer's pedal. If anyone would break his behringer pedal i would be happy to buy the broken one and house it in an aluminium case. Honestly, the first time I saw my BDi21 I thought the same thing: "as soon as it would break, i will house it in an other case". But it is still in good conditions... And I'm 75kg often wearing skate's shoes, but sometimes wears boots.
I have a few Behringer pedals, and while not exact duplicates of the originals, they definitely offer tremendous value...and for a musician like me, value is ALWAYS a consideration. Thanks for the cool review.
I was gifted one of these and, as fate would have it, the line-out on my amp head is dodgy AF. So I run this as an always-on pedal through the effects loop to replace the amp D.I. Honestly, works a treat.
I use one of these as an always-on pre-amp - it's a life-saver when playing a support gig or in a practice room with a borrowed bass amp. I've tried other bass pre-amps, but prefer this, I keep meaning to order a spare!
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to plop down the gheetus for a Sansamp. I thought this pedal is inexpensive enough to test out, so I bought one. Really enjoyed the sound of it. Nice tones I was looking for, I just wish it had a midrange control. I liked it well enough to purchase a Sansamp v2. A good tip is to add a touch of white paint or glow-in-the-dark paint to the little divots in the knobs so you can see where they are set easier. I’d definitely recommend one. It’s a good pedal.
By the way, I have been using this pedal for a bit now. It's pretty good. I used to just plug direct in and get a big flabby, tubby DI sound that I'd kill myself trying to eq later. This is my first bass pedal and it makes it possible to get a much better sound in.
I owned two BDI21s before I went for Sansamp programmable. Funny enough I found Behringer easier to find great tone. If Behringer would sell programmable unit in metal case, I would sell my Sansamp without regrets.
I've had a BDI21 for almost a decade. Not a single issue with it (as has been the case with all the Behringer stuff I have bought over the past 15 years). I had a Sansamp for about 2-3 months and got rid of it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't better than the BDI21 for 5x the cost.
i really wish there was an option for mids on this pedal like some sans amps have, but besides that and it being a little noisy its amazing for the price, it transformed my pretty boring sounding combo into something way better.
I know you said you get what you pay for with the Sansamp, but in the BDI21’s case you get far more than you paid for 😉 - you are totally right with your suggestion for marking the knobs though!

Hey guys, I just got my BDI21 in the other day and I’m loving it. Definitely adds that umph I was looking for. If I’m running this pedal along side other pedals where would be the best place to place this in my signal chain. Right now I’m running tuner > compressor > bdi21
I use the SansAmp RBI rack unit for recording, and wanted something to emulate that live, it's working for me, and it's cheaper than a passive D.I., just for that it's a good option.
Haha this was the first pedal I bought for bass (figured at that price point (I think it was 22€ brand new), can't really go wrong with it) and one of the first things I did with it was painting the little notches on each dial white. MUCH easier to use after that simple "mod". It's certainly not the greatest drive pedal in the world but for the price, it's pretty awesome!
I'd like to see inside it. I've repaired pedals for people and have retrofitted quality pots and stomp switches from more expensive equipment to "favourite" cheaper examples. Perhaps the guts of the BDI21can be used as the basis for a really cool DIY project. Fitting it into a more sturdy customised housing with more robust potentiometers and foot switch. It's not a hard thing to do. Anyone skilled with a soldering iron and possessing a little bit of electronics knowhow can do it.
A toothpick and some white paint solves the knob direction problem, and also I've been stomping on mine for a few years and still haven't had a problem.
I've been using the pedal for two years, on stage, I recorded an lp, and I think it's the best investment I made, it's a really cheap pedal, but it can help the sound of a cheap passive bass too, if you don't have much money (like is my case) is really recommended, you will have a great sound! (the sansamp pedal is very expensive here) greetings from argentina
Have this playing at church, also have a boss GT1B but i find my self going back to the BDI. I use it as a preamp and have a compressor and drive pedals before it. If the Sansamp is anything like the TriAC that I have from them I probably wouldn’t like it anyway.
I've had mine for a couple years and use it as an always-on pedal to warm up my sterile solid-state amp and it does the job perfectly. My only gripe with it is, as you mentionned, it's kinda confusing to see your settings, even in broad daylight. On a dimly lit stage, forget it. Thinking about modifyng the knobs, or replacing them.
as you are so much into attention to details have you tried to get these sounds SVT , Chris squire, with Rick on your HX Stomp if so what are your settings?as no one on the tube has done. what a challenge for you!
So, bedroom bass players who want to make a sound 'like Geddy' will never justify getting a Sansamp but they can get a 'similar' effect for a tenth of the money?? Looks good to me.
I have the version 1 of the original Sansamp that has been with me and has played thousands of shows with me since 1998. I picked one of these Behringers up just to see if it was a dead on copy. Pretty much is but plastic and doesn't have the parallel output. It doesn't sound exactly the same but close enough that I don't know how they're not in court for copying Tech21. It's what I have to leave at my practice place so I don't have to leave my Sansamp.
Been waiting for you to do this one! Great review, for the price it’s pretty damn good! Can’t see it lasting very long before that switch breaks of the jack soldering breaks down. Be interesting what the little bod plugin sounds like in comparison!
I’ve had two of these and the hiss I get from it makes it nearly impossible to use. I have to really crank up the volume on my amp to drown out the hiss. I wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem.
People often turn their noses up at clones, not realizing that a lot of great gear started out life as a clone. True story: Marshall amps started as a clone of Fender Bassman amps. The reason why they sound different, is because they had different components in the U.K.
I own both units, behringer is a very good pedal for its price, but sansamp has a certain quality that can't be beaten. And will probably last you for a lifetime.Sooooo... Get the behringer while you save for the Sansamp my friends :P the original tech21 product is a Beast.
Hi! Afraid not. Amps have two sections, a preamp and a power amp. The power amp is what powers the cab and preamp pedals are essentially the EQ controls of an amp, without the power amp section to power a cab. You can by separate power amps, check out the Ashdown Ant or Seymour Duncan power stage. Hope this helps!
I Play this f…..g Pedal on Stage with a lot of different Squier Pj Basses and the LTD Sureyvor 87 all with EMG PJX Pickups with a Hartke set up and the Sound like Frank Bello je is my Inspiration
I think I will get 2 of these and slit my signal and go into each one for distortion with all highs and the other all bass with compression then sum them together
Often times with inexpensive DI boxes, you get great clarity and grit but you lose a lot of the bottom end of the signal. Not sure I can really tell using my headphones or by monitors while listening to a youtube video. Fellow bassists, how does the bottom end of this pedal compare to a much more expensive box (or DI from a head)? Thanks!
Behringer make their money as follows: 1. They make clones. (This is a clone of the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI.) Most circuits can't be patented so as they copy they don't have to spend money on R&D. 2. Behringer has a giant factory in China which means that they get parts easily (and without transport costs). They also have a highly skilled workforce and low labour costs. 3. Behringer is a giant company, but it is part of a larger conglomerate that means it has extensive buying power as well.
Best Bass Tone for under $100 US. Favorite feature is running a stereo dry/wet signal using the XLR for clean and 1/8 into effects into separate amp. Fan Fucking Tastic
@dynocap question! can I use this just as a DI? like: I want a way to record the dry signal of my bass or guitar (and then process it via software). Is this a way to do this?
@@diom00 I'm wondering the same thing!! I got the bass tone I was looking for just with plugins and no di but I was wondering if using this would make my tone even better (and maybe add a distortion pedal to try and get the same tone without any plugins and see which one I like most)
(i know that i commented on another comment that refferensed the DI part of the pedal, but i created a new comment for if you dont see the old one) can I use this just as a DI? like: I want a way to record the dry signal of my bass or guitar (and then process it via software). Good review. You need to drop your pickups on the Bass side of your bass. The E is thunderous compared to the other strings....or that appears to be the case to my ears.
I have a Behringer amp and it isn’t very good so my judgment on their products is a little bit biased against them. That said it’s not like you need a second mortgage to get this pedal so maybe a good buy for someone starting out on the journey? Another great video Jonny, keep them coming.
Yeah I can imagine their bass head not being great. I've played a few of their cabs and not loved then. Definitely a good starting point and/or backup! Thanks mate
Hi Johnny! Thank you for all the good content you make. I have one question. I never had a preamp and never used it. I only use passive basses and I recently bought a POD GO. My signal chain is: bass>compressor pedal>POD GO + Tc Electronic Sub n Up into the fx loop. Since the pod go is limited to only 4 blocks, with the fx loop I am able to use 5 fx instead of 4. The sansamp in the pod go I like it for having a clean slighty dirt tone (like a Justin Chancellor one), but for the really dirt I prefer the Obsidian one. I don't like the obsidian before the sub n up and since the pod go i limited compared to the HX stomp I ask you. Would it make sense buy a sansmap and use it after my compressor pedal using the obsidian as only distortion or it would be better buy a Darkglass and put it after my sub n up into the Fxloop using the sansamp in the Podgo? I don't use D.I., I use the pod go as Audio Interface as well. Hope I have been clear. Thank you so much.
I’ve got this pedal/DI and honestly think it’s absolutely amazing for the price - it’s easy to pick holes in it being a bit ugly and basically not as well made as a SansAmp but it cost me 6 times less than a SansAmp, is the SansAmp 6 x better? Not even close - IMO the SansAmp is an 8/10 but the Behringer is at least a 7/10. Great vid anyway 👍

For what it's worth, my BDI21 is 15 years old and still working. The equivalent acoustic- and electric pedals are 10 years old and working.
To summarize: You get 90-95% of the Sansamp bass driver for 1/10 of the cost.

Is the hi-freq hiss a feature of the pedal or is it because of daisy-chaining?
I just play at church and I’m going straight into a DI box. I’m really curious how this would do for helping me beef up my tone
I’ve had two of these and the hiss I get from it makes it nearly impossible to use. I have to really crank up the volume on my amp to drown out the hiss. I wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem.
i have this BDI21...it is powerful
Power that fits in your pocket 💪
aww sorry about panda that is such a cute cat
Hi Jonny, I have active bass is it possible to connect to BDI 21?
Since it is a DI box active as well.
Thanks
@@ThaliaPaskalis yep! Makes no different 😊
Which would be a better buy for getting a good live tone between this pedal or the Valeton Dapper Bass?
at 11:30 noticed you had the bass and treble on the BDI21 reversed when A:B'ing the two .. but thanks for doing this!
Totally agree 😄
CAn you make a video of the JOYO Tidal wave?
What are the settings at the end part? Sounds amazing!
Let's say... I don't have an amp head only the 2x12" bass cabinet... Does it work just plugin the preamp bass to the cabinet? And how loud can be?
Hi!
I got this pedal, and it’s trully surprising for the price.
It really is!
@@JonnyDibble I used it in live situations both plugging it in the PA and into my amp and it sounds great on both uses live.
Great review. Very indepth and informative.
That pedal for £25 is a good buy.
Thanks Paul!
I think I will get 2 of these and slit my signal and go into each one for distortion with all highs and the other all bass with compression then sum them together
You rock mate! You should do EHX bass battalion 🙏
Ah thanks very much! 😝 That would be sweet!
Hi! What you think is use BDI-21 and Beq700(graphic equal) ?
It's a good combination to have drive ?
Thanks a lot ..
Great channel !!
Hi! That wpuld definitely give you more tone shaping options! I've not tried the EQ personally though. Thanks very much! 😄
Great video as always. Sorry to hear about Panda's passing
Cheers mate, sad times but getting there ☺
Is this effective Bass amp modeler if i use it with my electric guitar?
Great review Man 👏👏 perfect
Cheers! 😄
How does it react to pedals put in front of it
I love my cheap bdi21 - what a deal 😀👍
Insane deal!
If I add eq for BDI21, do you think there's a help or nah?
Often times with inexpensive DI boxes, you get great clarity and grit but you lose a lot of the bottom end of the signal. Not sure I can really tell using my headphones or by monitors while listening to a youtube video. Fellow bassists, how does the bottom end of this pedal compare to a much more expensive box (or DI from a head)? Thanks!
I have it in the rack version, i.e. Bass V-amp pro👍
Behringer did it right this time
Behringer make their money as follows:
Yep!
I have a question: can i use this preamp getting into amp or only direct into a speaker?
Of course! I almost exclusively use my preamps going into an amp. That's essentially What you're hearing here 😊
@@JonnyDibble Thanks for your answer dude! i apreciated it!
The Joyo Dr J Sparrow is a better Sansamp, Caline Wine Cellar too, in that order. About $55 and $35 respectively, quieter, ballsier and far sturdier.
I'll check out the Joyo! Is it just a better clone or better in general?
Best Bass Tone for under $100 US. Favorite feature is running a stereo dry/wet signal using the XLR for clean and 1/8 into effects into separate amp. Fan Fucking Tastic
Love that approach! Awesome 😄
@@JonnyDibble Thanks Man! Love your channel. One of the best bass channels out there!
Hell yeah, that was my first pedal! Great first pedal choice. Still my main DI!
Awesome! Great for someone stepping into the world of pedals and beyond 👌
@dynocap
question! can I use this just as a DI?
like: I want a way to record the dry signal of my bass or guitar (and then process it via software). Is this a way to do this?
@@diom00 I'm wondering the same thing!! I got the bass tone I was looking for just with plugins and no di but I was wondering if using this would make my tone even better (and maybe add a distortion pedal to try and get the same tone without any plugins and see which one I like most)
Is there vol loss or my crummy headphones?
Mic might be lower in this one. Forgot to change my input volume back up after recording my podcast! Whooos
(i know that i commented on another comment that refferensed the DI part of the pedal, but i created a new comment for if you dont see the old one)

When you record through the DI, it is coloured by the preamp as apposed to a bypassed sound through the DI. Hope that helps!
@@JonnyDibble but if I turn the blend (or presence, not sure which of them) knob all way down, wouldnt the signal be completely dry then?
@@diom00 correct, the blend could be a way around it!
@@JonnyDibble would you recommend it or should i buy a 'proper' DI? I mean dumb question but i dont know which DI suits for my needs
(sorry for the questions lol, I thank you very much for your responses!)
@@diom00 I've not tried it myself, but I don't see why it wouldn't be effective? Of course there will better quality DIs, but for the money you can't argue!
Excelente vídeo. Parabéns!
Thanks very much!
Just use white nail polish on the knobs to be able read it easier
Good review. You need to drop your pickups on the Bass side of your bass. The E is thunderous compared to the other strings....or that appears to be the case to my ears.
Thanks!! Yeah there's some setup issues with that jazz atm
Make a premuim anniversary edition with a metal casing and button and switch...id pay 15-20 extra...why not?!
Look into the modded versions - there is a mod that you can do them (but I've destroyed three with sloppy soldering.. lol)
I would definitely destroy mine haha. Will check out some demos though!
I found something interesting ......so thank you jonny....i must have that pedal....yeah!!😀😃
Woohoo! Thanks bud ☺
I'm a skeptical person, and somehow I just completely trust this guy from the jump.
aww panda
If you're a pro, buy the Sans amp. The v tone will do what I need.
