Karateka is a 1984 beat'em up video game by Jordan Mechner, and was his first game created while attending Yale University. It was originally programmed for the Apple II, and was later ported to several other home computers and early gaming consoles. The game was published in North America by Brøderbund, and in Europe by Ariolasoft.The player controls an unnamed protagonist who is attempting to rescue his love interest, the Princess Mariko, from Akuma's castle forteress. The game exhibits a combination of a side-scrolling platform and fighting game elements. The player uses punches and kicks.

The game, as with most at the time of development, lacked checkpoints or the ability to save the game, making it a challenge to complete in a single sitting.Karateka has been well-received, particularly for its realistic animations used for the game's characters. The game was considered a breakthrough success for Mechner, and would eventually result in his development of the Prince of Persia franchise. A high-definition remake, spearheaded by Mechner, was released as a downloadable title for the Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, with planned ports for the iOS and Wii U systems for download.

The player is introduced to the unnamed hero as he ascends a mountain into Akuma's fortress to rescue Princess Mariko.As the player directs the hero into the fortress, various foes appear and attempt to stop him. Once in a fighting stance, the player delivers blows, punches, and kicks at the enemy while dodging the enemy's attacks. The player's health, shown by a bar on the bottom of the screen, diminishes with every hit he takes, though health is recovered slowly by not engaging in combat. Should the player lose all his health, the game is over, requiring the player to start again.Player must be in battle mode to fight.

The enemy's health bar is shown on the screen as well; once this is drained, the player has defeated him and can progress forward.In addition to human enemies, Akuma occasionally sends his trained hawk to attack the player, which can be deflected with well-timed punches.There are some environmental hazards that the player can come upon, such as a falling portcullis or an open cliffside, which end the game immediately if not avoided. Throughout the game, cut scenes are shown, displaying such scenes as Akuma ordering his men to attack the player and Mariko nervously awaiting her fate in the back room.

that bird and that fvcking guillotine gate were the most annoying obstacles when I played this game.
Edward Elrich Just like regular fighters, if the hawk hits you as you are running, you will die instantly. When you hear the indication that the hawk is about to appear, stop running, and get into fighting stance. If you time your strike correctly at the right height, you can hit the hawk and avoid taking any damage from the encounter. However, even if you do not manage to hit the hawk, as long as you are in fighting stance, you will take two hit points worth of damage, which you can easily withstand and eventually regain.

This was such a weird game for those times. Those in-game cutscenes, that background 8-bit seashore wave sounds, ths slow mo fighting....definitely a classic!
For anyone new to this game, the final room with the girl has a pretty interesting outcome if you decided to stay in a fighting stance, as she will actually DEFEAT you because she thought you were looking for a fight.

I clearly remember this game in my childhood playing with my brother. It was fun, scary and frustrating back then. Seeing this now makes my blood boil and my hair tingling in nostalgia. It was really fun time in my life. 💙

If I remember correctly, if you didn't run up to the princess at the end, she kicked your ass dead, because you would instead approach her in a fighting stance.

This was the comment I was looking for.
I worked my ass off figuring out so many rules and patterns and actually beat this super hard game…except as I ran to the Princess, I remembered that getting hit while running is instant death. So, I walked to her, like every other character.
Suddenly, she no longer assumed a hugging posture.
And she kicked my ass to death.
One wonders why I needed to save her in the first damned place. 😂
I had to go through all that 💩 again just to try breaking all the rules I’d learned before and running to her for an embrace.
What's the actual name of this game I remember playing it in school on a floppy disc computer. It was the first game I beat like back in 84 or 85

I played this for years until got to the princess, and on that stage, i was wondering what to do, and as i approached her, surprisingly she would kill me, but then after days and days trying, i finally found out the trick that you had to run towards her. Just imagine how amazed i felt. Now, looking at this and seeing that so many of you had the same great time, this put me in on a high. Great time, simple things bringing great impact....a bit different from today😊

Finishing this game as a kid is definitely one of my biggest achievements of all time.
Edit: finished watching the video, was wondering throughout the gameplay whether i really finished it or not until the last trap where the boss punches you the moment you enter the room, how the heck did i finish it ?
When I first played this game I thought it was broken because I died in the first stage cause I didn't know how to punch or kick.

there's this eerie feel to this game, the ominous music, the slow paced movement of the characters and your fragile character that dies in like 3 hits all add up to trigger anxiety.
This game used to make me so anxious when I was a kid. idk if it's the visuals or the sound, it's just so weird. It still feels weird now more than a decade and half later....
My brother and I didn't know how to play this game at first. When we pressed the buttons while it was in its initial running stance it bowed. So we made a really dumb theory that you had to run quickly to the enemy and press the button, so you would tackle and hit them with your head haha

I think my copy was broken on my Super Joy 64. He walks up and gets his ass beat and that's the game.
I haved that one, isn't broken, just press down to get in position to fight when you encounter with a enemy. You can do a reverence too.
@@luislizano7025 agreed you have to press down to battle enemies, otherwise the enemies will one hit kill you if you touch them. I learned this the hard way.
Man now I wanna play again. Because I never knew how to make my character fight. I didn’t have internet or access to a computer. I couldn’t google how to play. RUclips didn’t exist so I couldn’t see someone play. But I wish I knew.

When I was a kid, I used to think that the lifebar of the player and enemy (when moving to the next enemy) seems so unfair, but now realizing that this is how increasing level and difficulty works.
The cinematic effect were a real deal.
The guy use the vital space very well in combat. He know how to be just out of range of the ennemi.

The most pivotal moment on the floor occurs at the very end where a spiked gate stands in front of the entrance to the dungeon where Mariko is kept. The enemies can't trigger the gate, but you can. If you try to rush through the gate, walking or running, the spikes will immediately slam down on you and kill you instantly. In order to bypass this death trap, you must inch towards the gate until your foot is right by the edge of the entrance. Then you must advance your fighter just enough to trigger the gate, and pull back in time to prevent the gate from killing him. If you do it correctly, the gate will fall in front of you.

+Heroes of Xanadu - Sloth You don't pull back. In the video is clearly shown that you advanced, not pulled back. The game is glitched.
+Roarkethemerciless First you have to be in running mode and run and do that shohn-ryu karate salute just before the gate close down on you. If you time your moves, everything will work fine. It really is the only way to do it.
I could only finished this game on PC (DOS) version by doing a middle kick to trigger the guillotine, then run forward when the guilottine slowly rise up.
for some odd reasons in NES version the guilottine keep killing my character no matter what method I use in any gaming site.
This feels so weird the sound and mood. The game is so hard, probably the most hardest game in Family Computer. Nice to see the ending part. 😂

Mute the volume and you will have a different emotion to the game, the game sound really places that tence feeling right into your gut, really cool game for it's time, thourely enjoyed this game even though it was scary at the time, that was part of the thrill and want to finish it, even if I never did.

Same goes if you are in a actual Karate sparring. If you try to use your fists on your opponent, you'll lack lower defense and your opponent will use that advantage to front kick.
It's my favorite story based game... I finished this twice...😎😎
At times my controller buttons would get stuck and my player would keep bowing down while the enemy would happily finish me off...some 27 yr old memories...
