I bought an Atari LYNX 2 for £75 but it's got a problem...

- I picked this Atari Lynx up from eBay for £75. It was sold as having some trace damage near the volume wheel. But is that the only problem?
Let's try and fix it!
Hope you enjoy!

Does anyone else check to see how long is left on the video as soon as Steve sounds confident he’s fixed it? If it’s more than a couple of minutes left, my soul dies a little
Ya because he never fixes it lol
It makes me happy when there's still loads more to watch!
Everytime... and then laugh that he put it back together 😂😂
Like imagining Esher's guy continually pushing a boulder around an impossible structure, I'd feel cheated if Steve fixed it within five minutes. I'm always here for the long haul
yes
Nice to finally see Voice Over Steve on camera. Always knew he'd be shortshaved...
🤣
i still think there are 3 steves fix it steve , voice over steven and singer steve who in the weekends does appearances at parties as a elvis interpreter
I'm impressed by the casual time travel, not even referenced, where a younger Steve steps in to finish the job
Did Elvis need an interpreter??? Fanyuvermuge. Well possibly
I like watching you and my mate vince you guy's are down to earth and smart at what you do.
The beats in the disassembly music are worthy of being released as tracks.
Nice work steve, hope you’ll do something about the screen modding thing, nice video BTW.
That was an amazing fix brother, time to mod that lynx on the second channel ♡♡♡
I'm abit surprised or confused that the volume control not working was to do with the wires, from the fact of that at 21.30 onwards (after you had completed the wiring) you was moving the volume control and it worked. Or in other words the volume worked before changing the speaker, so I assumed it was surely going to be something to do with the change of speaker. Bit strange that you had to move the wire to a different spot for the volume to work, even though (at 21.30) the volume also worked at first before you moved it.
Wow man a lynx good addition to any collection
Always a game gear boy myself and having never seen a lynx in the flesh I'm surprised at how thick it is, the publicity at the time between the two fighting hand heads would state the game gear is the better console with better games but is chunky and it eats batteries (which it did) but the lynx is no light weight itself by the looks
I couldnt handle the raps before but theyre gettin inventive now though you waited too long with the coolie jingus line this is a good un
What is the outro song?
The Atari Lynx 2 does have stereo sound through the headphones output. The metal shield can easily be removed by bending the pins on the bottom of the PCB (the side you soldered on). The screen is not very good, but it can be a backlight problem. It is a small fluorescent tube that dims with age. But, like you said, the are very good LCD mods out there. Have fun with your Lynx!
This comment needs some more thumbs so Steve sees it!
Right, idk why he didn't look for schematics on the internet; the audio section on it is fairly easy to understand.
@@Okurka. If Steve was really stuck, I'm sure he would have looked. I think it makes the video more interesting through the process of discovery.
@@mattbowd He didn't even discover the original amplifiers.
@@Okurka. Yeah, unless there's been a lot of work that didn't make it into the video, it seems a bit of a cop out to just throw in a cheap amplifier board like that, and the poor display has a few possible causes which can be nice and simple to sort out, just giving up and fitting an IPS mod, again, bit of a cop out.
Definitely looking forward to seeing the screen mod.
I've ordered one from China, so hopefully it won't take too long to arrive!
@@StezStixFixAwesome. I'll put on the notification and can't wait what's it gonna look like!!!
@@StezStixFix Don't forget to check/fix or mod the Headphone(jack) if possible.
At least my guess would be the Headphone still does not work at the moment?
@@StezStixFix if you're able to get around to it, i'd like to see you model & print the battery cover. i think that kind of thing would really fit well with your videos 👍
Everyone is pro china when they need the parts otherwise whine about aliexpress/temu etc (cough racist)
Couldn’t sleep. Gf woke to me watching something at 3am. ‘What ya watching?’ she logically asked. ‘I’m watching this bloke from Manchester (?) fix broken electronics. He has a thing called Dave and sings a song each time.’ I think she’s spent the last week questioning a few things.
Lol, now you put it like that 😂
I had a Lynx version 1 and while the screen was pretty low res it was much brighter than that. Have you checked the back light tube still works?
Nice fix on this one! I just filmed a video fixing some of these too. Really interesting to see how you fixed that sound issue.
Nice one!!! I like how you filmed the second half of the video 5 years ago.
Also, nice to see happy face! :)
🤣
Thinking about this it means that time is ticking, as it's going to fail again in 5 years time! (LOL).
Guessing the headphone jack no longer works
Love this so much! great fix dude!! I've always wanted to tinker with a Lynx, this is crying out for a screen mod too! :)
Thanks Kip! Yeah, definitely gonna pimp this one!
@@StezStixFix
I think you should definitely do more console mods... Legal ones obviously 😅
There are rich veins of mods you could mine for endless hours of future content.
Maybe even a new parallel channel called 'StezStix Mods' perhaps
This is the model I bought, sold as no power. Turns out the seller bought it as no power intending to fix it, but he didn't own any games. That was the whole problem, as you said, you need a game to turn it on lol.
Shhh'shh don't tell everyone.. 🙄🤪😇
Known about this one for about 10 year's which is as long as I've owned a Lynx model 1. Bought it to try and fix it.. but it just needed a Game to work. Model 1 though has x2 different lengths off screws though.. Watch when re assembling. I didn't this know back then 😭 ...
Back when I was in high school, a good friend of mine went to an auction and bought a Model I Lynx as “not working” because it wouldn’t turn on. It never sold and nobody else made an offer, so he bought it for $1 USD. He gave it to me after I told him it probably just needed a game (he knew I’d better appreciate it than he would, being an Atari item). Did just that and it came right on, no problem at all.
I got a Lynx model 1 for cheap on eBay as it wouldn’t turn on. I took a chance and it worked fine. The seller had no games to test it with.
10:39 -- "We just don't know, do we?" Seventeen minutes left in the video... Yeah, we know. :)
Why not cut the wire to the right length once you soldered the one end Ste? I feel wiggling the wire to break it once soldered at the other end could pull the track off the board.
Oscilloscope: to make it easier for you, you should limit the frequency range to the range analog should have (everything below 50 kHz should do). You scope is trying everything all over the place. Limiting the range, and maybe the voltage, will result in more "knowing" what's going on, instead of guessing 🙂. Nice video, as usual!
nice fix. And it shows that sometimes there are even simpler solutions to some problems. Instead of butchering off that stupid cover, you just installed a new amplifier. Great idea and it worked like a charm. Great job fixing this and I am 100% for a screen mod on this one.
What are the economics of something like this? I'm aware you're not in it for profit, and I enjoyed it, so 75 pounds can reasonably be justified, I suppose you enjoy fixing too😊. Is guys like you fixing driving the price point though? I mean 30 odd year old piece of electronics that doesn't work, 75 pounds seems like a lot. Just curious, thanks for the content.
Love the evolution of your diagnostic skills and technique!
Does anyone fail to mention to him? That the lynks screen is a backlit screen and the backlight is not working on this unit.
Atari Lynx 2 is stereo I think. You could link both audio channels to the headphone socket. Although you'd also have to rely on the audio jack cutting out the amplifier to the speaker. Hang on, wonder if the headphone socket is buggered and causing the amplifier to be switched off. Did you check the headphone socket for serviceability?
The Lynx 2 screen was way better than the original but it was using 1990's technology.
No video this week? I hope you are well sir!
Week 8 post Mario Track Gate ... STILL no explanation...
The fact the video was deleted should tell you all you need to know. Had it been genuine we’d have got a follow up and he would have benefitted from all the comments for RUclips engagement
Why is everyone saying it's a great fix? Only the left channel is connected to the speaker and the headphone socket still doesn't work.
The headphone socket disables the original speaker amplifier when a headphone jack is plugged in, it may have been doing that all the time.
What 3D printed did you get? I am going to upgrade my Ender 3 V2 Neo with their S1 Pro next paycheck. 😁
Definitely going to be watching out for a screen replacement/mod video. It’s going to look great!
By far your best fix yet. In my opinion. Really like to see how you troubleshooted it and persevered
I skipped to 3:46, but I still love ya Steve
I too have had a lynx in the past and the screen was way brighter than that think you might need to look at the screen could be a backlight issue
I fitted a BennVenn screen to my Lynx 2, it's brilliant.
Nice. BennVenn makes good stuff 👍🏼
i dont get people... holes are there on boards for a reason, use them when soldering the wires
i love this.. enjoyed every bit of it!!!! please keep creating more videos!!!!
I might be wrong but I THINK there are supposed to be FLUORESCENT LIGHTS behind the screen... inside that big round metal cover... hope you open it and give it a look... BUT I ALSO HOPE you just go to that site I told you about in another comment and GET THE REPLACEMENT LCD SCREEN KIT (with HDMI Out) from 'retro game repair shop' (can't write the address here in the comments tho :(
I just read that he ordered a screen from china
Awesome work, and the Smiths, love it. Well done.
Paper boy?! Looove it! Born 76🇸🇪😂
Born in 76 too
@@chongtak paper boy was the shit.. But imo soo hard! Games these days are so forgivin. Back in the days not so much.. 😋🇸🇪
You should install the mcwill screen mod, massive difference compared to the original screen
Hi Steve, I think you might be wrong about it being mono.
The pot is stereo, two inputs and two outputs, so likely stereo. The amplifier just merges the left and the right audio into single speaker, but headphones are stereo.
That's correct, it has two audio channels and he connected only one.
17:15
I accidentally spit on my phone just then..
One of my fav channels, btw..
21:25
I knew it worked because a Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage commercial came on..
Awesome work there. I can;t beleive you were so shocked that we didn't have a "get in" moment. Do think that screen is on its last legs though.
🤣 I think it's the first time I've been that shocked. I'll revert back to "get in" from now on 😁
I had one as a kid, it was a lot of fun!
There's a really good Lynx 2 IPS screen replacement mod from Benn Venn. I know Mark Fixes Stuff did a video on that a while back. I did it on my own Lynx 2 and it's really 1) simple, and 2) beautiful.
Haven't read all of the comments, but the Lynx mk II actually does provide stereo through the headphone jack. And in fact, both of the channels are merged at the headphone jack so that you hear both channels on the speaker output on the console. With headphones plugged in, it shuts off the audio to the speaker. So you might have to double check your audio inputs to that installed amp to be sure you have both channels working. There is a dedicated diagnostic cart for the mk II model that better checks this.
Ah! The Smiths. Love it. Thank you.
SHABBA :)
I find your videos very fun to watch and funny. It's nice that it is sometimes so hopeless and yet it still works. Keep it up. Peace.
Is that a Fighting Irish t-shirt you're wearing!?!?!?!? The American college of Notre Dame !?!?!?! Just the stone's throw from where I live!
OMG, seller used "Batman Returns" in the thumbnail pic.... That is easily the worst licensed game I've ever played.
At quick look at schematics for the Lynx II Motherboard : The two amplifers for the sound are U12 and U5 at the top right of the mainboard. Could be one of them is faulty.
But your "Soundmod" do also work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This brings back memories! still remember getting my Lynx from Dixons in the early 90s. I've got an early 80s Yamaha CS01 synth with a slider fault and battery 'spring' connector broken if you fancy a challenge
Dave, we haven’t forgotten you owe Steve $12,000.
Why did you think a wax bug museum would catch on?
Amazing one Steve... and indeed the screen even from the inside looks exactly like the one on SEGA GAME GEAR.. with that fluorescent lamp in the back haha
Cant wait for the mod and how will you use the 3D printer...
I have a Lynx 1 and a Lynx 2, and they're brilliant little machines. Lots of games too. But... the screens downright sucketh. That's just how these machines are.
Yeah the screens on both models of the Lynx were never great, that’s early 90s LCD screen tech for ya. And don’t mention the battery life. You could get maybe 1 hour but that’s with the brightness cranked up. Still I loved playing Rygar on it. My fav Lynx game by far.
WHY DIDN'T TRY TO FIX THE BACKLIGHT?!?!?! - I'm FAIRLY CERTAIN THERE ARE ALREADY BACKLIGHTS UNDER THAT ROUND METAL COVER... but YES, GET TYHE LCD MOD!
Hey @stezStixFIX you can simply do a no soldering needed LCD upgrade which looks thousands times better maybe that can be a future video to revisit? The upgrade is totally worth it
@StezStixFix nice video. Interesting solution to fix the amp. There isn’t much in swapping the screen on the Lynx2. The Lynx 1 has a lot more soldering to do though for a new screen…
What oscilloscope are you using?
@Stezstix
Really random question, but the dvds you've got hanging behind you in your videos in the frame like things. Can I ask where are they from & what are they called. I've looked & can't find them.
I had one of these as a kid. Amazing machine. Chips Challenge. & Batman returns were my favourite games.
Anyhow, we had the AC charger which was great until my younger brother stuffed it into the headphone jack and from then on - no sound.
At the time I severely barrated him but looking back, it is awful product design having a power connector that could fit into the headphone jack.
Anyhoo, I thought I'd share this tale as I'm convinced this is my old lynx. As unlikely as that sounds.
I know you are really chuffed with this fix. I know I would be. Modding the sound output with a part you thought of yourself and then it all came together nicely. That's the real pay off with this stuff. As they say, a warm feeling like pi$$ing your pants but no one else knows :-)
PS I bought a 3d printer full price brand new. Cost a bit then decided to have a mini print farm and bought a broken one, fixed it all up and it ended up costing me 1/3rd of the new one. Now that was both a good and bad feeling.
Oh wow. The Atari Lynx. I had (have somewhere) 2 of these. The original and 2nd version. I'd play Chips Challenge for so long the sound track would do me in. 😂
Witness the Dazgames.. Carl Pilkington Man.. Fix It
Which soldering iron tip is this? I bought a 900M-T-IS from Aliexpress and couldn't get any heat into it, even at 400 degrees!
The amplifier module you fitted delivers 3W left and 3W right into a 4 ohm load @ 5V, you fitted an 8 ohm speaker how long will that speaker (0.5W) last.
Ok. Need to ask. What is the puppet animal like creature that you randomly show in the videos? Second question... why is it shown? What does it symbolize? A mistake or error of some sort? Or just random placement?
19:05
I don't know the circuitry of the Lynx, but I know that older sound processors can have multiple signals for different sounds.
For example, one channel may have keyboard/piano sounds while another has percussion. Fed into a mono speaker to try to emulate a larger or fuller sound stage.
This sounds like it's getting all of the instruments though.
21:55
Very nice, simple to work with and functional. I do wonder if that single ground could have been used to somehow mount the new amp to that copper shield. Probably a little over engineered, but a fun Idea.
Why is the "Holy Hand Grenade" and above sold out on Patreon? :'( It's quite rare that you want to give someone money and they refure to accept it! Anyway, thank you for a great video, as per usual! You're the best!
I bet the headphone output doesn’t produce any sound…
It could be that the headphone socket is the culprit. It disables the original speaker amplifier when a headphone jack is plugged in; maybe it does that always now.
Well restored Steve. Could this unit be a candidate for installing that zedlabz IPS LCD screen upgrade? I noticed it fits some but not all models. Good luck 😀👍
Well played! The lynx definitely had tye worst screen ever! I remember playing my mates years ago and thinking how awful it was compared to my Game gear. I think you should fit an IPS screen fir one of your videos
I have so much fun watching you repair this stuff! Cant wait to see the mod and 3d print content. 😁
Thanks for the video! The sound of paperboy through the fixed lynx made my s21 speakers vibe like when i owned the lynx1
Mark Fixes Stuff replaced his screen 3 years ago it seems. Might be useful as a backup if anything doesn't work? Just a thought!
Fantastic video. Love the Lynx!! I bought one on the first day it was available from Toys "R" Us for one reason..."WAR BIRDS" A combat flight sim on a portable gaming system was astounding at the time. Love the music and sound it makes. Even now I sometimes leave a Lynx on just to hear the demo music. My favorites are "Blue Lightning" and "Zarlor Mercenary" just for the opening music.
Hi Steve, where do you get your wire? Saw a dispenser at around 18:17 with various grades/colours. Also the bare wire for bridging? Also great video and fix! I have a Game Gear and hope to do a screen mod one day, hankering after a Lynx now and looking forward to your screen mod =)
Wow, that is an extremely strange PCB - is that a giant ground plane partially covering all the traces? I don't think I've ever seen a PCB with a partial layer like that before - you can clearly see a lot of the traces ducking underneath that giant copper plane. So odd!
You may have already checked - but if the previous owner recapped the board, they may have installed the wrong capacitor around the audio amp IC's (which were the ones you pointed out). A wrong cap there can cause the audio to stop working.
Oh man.. This brought back memories. I had one of these when i was about 10 years old. Awsome suff as always dude 👍
really great like everytime ! Just a word : it's not a Lynx but a Lynx 2 :) IPS mod and battery mod will be the best for this legend :)
Use graphite in some clear. Pencil lead or use a rod out an alkaline battery.
Of course now I'm watching and you have graphite powder all of a sudden. Too funny. If you want to electroplate some 3d prints I usually spray them with clear and immediately put them in a well sealed container with some graphite powder and give it a good shake. If you mix the powder in the paint you lose conductivity to the paint , but if you spray the paint the powder it while it's wet you have all graphite on the top layer it's basically looks like powder coat. Just don't breathe that stuff in.
Check the headphone jack. My guess is there's a piece of metal debris inside shorting the contacts. (Because headphones would shut off the speakers, and the debris would make it so headphones won't work) path of least resistance.
I think the amp is fine just this short is what's causing the original problem.
Luv the Vids! Butt, ITS NOT A FARGING MICROSCOPE... Just say SCOPE
You should have just added backlight to the screen. By the way what is your new 3d printer? Bambu Lab?
Love watching your videos, i have a playr football gps tracker that my son managed to put through the washing machine. All works except when you put it into the vest it doesn't turn on. I think there is a magnetic switch that isn't working. Would this be something that you would look at?
If you swap out the screen then you also may want to do a recap and more importantly: replace the power mosfet/diode. The diode is prone to fail and kill the cpu sooner or later. My shop to go is k-retro.(rhymes 😮) Also, congrats, thats a nice fix 😊
Hoping for LED TV fixes in the future 🙏
Them TVs can be huge but the power board, main board and T-con board size are not 😅
Looking forward to the screen mod video!
AHA , YOU REPAIR AND SING...! RAP MIXED WITH CHILLOUT, AND ALWAYS SPONSOR YOUR SPONSORS . WELL , TO LIKE THE COLORS . YOU DO IT WELL AND YOU USE ELECTRONIC PRECISION TOOLS AND MAGNIFICATION . WELL DONE .
GREETINGS e . MINEM . DO YOU GET IT ? ! .
Please can someone tell me why does, Steve always keep putting everything back together before just testing it. I find it very odd. I do find his patients so strong.. great video
you should change the channel name to "how many times can i take apart and put back together 1 thing" :) was today a world record ?:). i still have my original atari lynx 1. the screen was always quite dim and i remember seeing the game gear back in the day and it was considerably better, also the lynx was officially a battery eater.
Hi! This cylinder behind the screen that we can see at 11:56, for example -- is it a lamp for the backlight? It might be dead, and replacing it could fix the screen issue, I suspect
Faultfinding and solderung skills, outweigh dhaving skills😊
I too cut mine off a week ago. Didnt look as bad asthat man.
I beggared the sound on my Lynx by accidently plugged an AC adaptor into the headphone socket, they are both the same size and next to each other and if you are not being careful... not a very good design choice by Atari...
