I do have plans to interview Grey one-on-one, later this year. I will go into more depth with this. I heard that it’s not easy for Grey to look back at Azula because of the mindset she had to put herself into. I remember Will Arnett saying that getting into the mindset of Bojack Horseman is very hard and he takes the darkness with him at home.,
Yeah that scene was actually pretty dark and disturbing, but you knew you were seeing the real consequences of her actions so at the same time you didnt feel bad for her at all
Im always in awe when I watch that. Some stories can’t accurately show mental breakdowns in characters. Some characters like the Joker and Patrick from American Psycho it’s been done super well. In Azula’s case it shows her mental deterioration but retains sympathy and sadness for the character. Having Zuko and Katara defeat her but not gloat but instead stare at her sadly says a lot about how the people around her feel for her.
It's very common. Actors just generally dont like watching themselves. Most of the Yugioh cast said they dont know how to play the Game, all they do is just read the lines.
@Carta Forno, What I can say, guess she's a good method actor haha.. but yeah. She should probably get that settled- no need to say such things, must of had a traumatic experience in the past to cause her to behave that way or likes to fight fire with fire, unforgiven racist actions from the past with more racism. Lovely world hahaha.

Carta Forno You know those kind of tweets from her are mostly jokes, right? That's her comedy style and why nobody cares. She makes jokes about things that aren't really funny, and you seem to be one of the only ones taking her seriously. I'm confused as to how a series of tweets is an equivalent to a mental breakdown
@@TechoNeko i still think her being a bit flirty mightve fully completed her personality idk why, i mean since no one really likes her for her, she tries to get people to like her? That would make sense
Here's a quote from Tom Hanks on Actors that don't watch their work. He doesn't watch his work either. "Because you never learn what to do. You only sort of learn what not to do. The thing about looking at the old movies is that they don't change,"
Before COVID19, my plan this year was to produce an Avatar The Last Airbender 15 year anniversary Documentary Short. It fell apart due to Conronavirus cancelling all the Cons. I haven't given up it!
There are a few reasons that caused her breakdown: 1-) Growing up without love. Like Ursa once said, Ozai is incapable of loving anyone, including his own son and daughter. Azula took him as her role model and tried to impress him. At the end, she was just trying to get her father's love and attention. 2-) Being hated by her own mother. Azula thought Ursa didn't love her, not like she loved Zuko. Azula was jealous of Zuko because he was favored by their mother, Azula just wanted Ursa to love her more. 3-) Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal. Even though it's hard to call them friends, in the deep down, Azula cared about them. She apologized to Ty Lee when she made her cry. She genuinely felt sorry to make her feel bad and even opened up her feelings. That means Azula cared about them, in her own way. Everything she went through caused her to being an early blooming sociopath. And she was just fourteen.
It's almost like most of the people commenting don't realize that this isn't her ONLY character. Do you expect her to have watched all of Scooby Doo, Fairly Odd Parents, and Batman too?
I think the reason that people expect her to have watched Avatar is because unlike those others, it's a story with a linear chain of events in which the characters experience growth and change, which is a lot harder to accomplish on shows with an episodic nature like Fairly Oddparents or Scooby Doo. Not to mention Avatar's only three seasons long, so it's not like it would take too awful long to watch. But as many people have said here, actors often don't watch the movies or shows they're in because they keep mulling over how they could have done a line or two different, and your voice sounds different to you than it does to everyone else. So it's understandable.
@@hundragant They're given notes and direction by the director. So like, they're told a summary of what's happened to the character and how that character feels, but they don't need the full context of the show for this. For instance, to play Azula, you literally don't need a single episode or scene that doesn't include her to understand her POV and perspective.
@@hundragant Also they're being paid to voice act. They are not being paid for any time spent just watching the show, even if the reason is purely to gain better insight into the character. Like that's not paid time. Voice actors need a work-life balance too and as fans, we should respect that (and not get angry when we learn they didn't watch the show).
When you’re 23 and just realized that this wonderful woman has been a part of your favorite childhood cartoons for years! Aside from voicing Azula (of course) I knew she voiced Sam on Danny Phantom, I didn’t know she voiced Vicky on Fairly Oddparents or three of the Loud sisters (Lola, Lana, and Lily to be exact) in the Loud House. And she apparently voiced Mandy on The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy!
Grey Delisle-Griffin is one of the most versatile voice actresses alongside Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Tara Strong. The 3 of them voiced so many characters that you learn something new from them everyday.
It's a common thing with actors in general. Tom Hanks refuses to watch movies he's in. Sometimes when they do so, they can't get invested in the characters or stories and just start criticizing their own performances. Instead of getting into the events unfolding on screen, all they can focus on is "oh, I should have performed this scene this other way instead" and get all worked up over that. So to avoid it, they just don't watch their own work.
It’s because you are your own worst critic and you never perform to the standards you put up on yourself. It just diminishes your confidence. Only those that have a lot of self love and they are their own biggest fans enjoy watching their performances which is rare.

I just finished watching the laste episode of Avatar the last airbender. And when i see Azula cry in agony i started crying too.. I feel sorry for her. I didn't know I'll love her. But good acting tho
That scene of her sobbing while chained up is so heartwrenching. Like my first time watching the series I (admittedly) was ready for her to die for pretty much the whole time, I had no sympathy for her, until that scene. Even during the mirror scene I wasnt empathetic necessarily, but I was like "woah, she's got some demons" but when she started sobbing and breathing fire while lashed down with chains, I felt so bad for her, and you know like that stinging feeling in your sinuses before you get teary-eyed? I got that
Makes sense to me. I don't think I'd ever want to listen to myself having a mental breakdown with ugly crying and everything. Even if it was just my voice attached to an animated character. Would be super cringe.
I feel like Azula's breakdown represents the inability for society to accept people for opposite gender roles. She obeyed the father lord, because she needed the narrative that she had purpose and that she wasn't tossed aside like a useless appliance by her friends, uncle, brother, mother and father. Azula was strong, capable, dominant, and the sad truth is that the real world tries to support gender diversity, but is actually contempt to accept women with such masculine gender identity, and her character exemplifies that truth. It's true for men with submissive tendencies and feminine gender expression as well and are mocked as simps and soy boys. The truth is that our psyche rejects inappropriate gender expression. Not even my own aunt and mother can smile at me when they see I'm not being manly. I used to hate Azula when I first watched this series, but it turns out she has so many qualities I never knew I really liked in a woman. One day, I just made a conscious decision not to disdain bitches anymore, and after that, I ended up F@CKING loving them, feeling an attraction so much stronger than the hatred I once had for them. I even like it when they ignore me. Unfortunately, I don't see many girls willing to do the same for me, or the men like me, to accept a softer, more feminine expression our behavior and psyche. Girls in particular need to respect a man before they can be attracted to them, and it's not easy respecting men whom is too soft and struggles with tension ;P. Still, hopefully, one day, I'll be walking down the street, and a sexy girl walks up to me as she pulls out a collar and leash from her pockets, commands me to stop, and puts that around my neck and whispers gently to me with the leash in her hands "you're my boyfriend now."
Great point but Azula's character has nothing to do with that. She's strong because she is strong. Just because a female character in a show is strong doesn't mean they're fighting for some kind of equality.
Also, she if she didn't obey her father, her character would've been totally different and nothing in common with the Azula we know so it would break the story line. Also, it's in a way impossible for her friends to toss her aside since she is the literal princess of the country. She is not just a 14 y old kid, she has a really high status and since Azula would never let her friends toss her like that, they would have to push her away aggressively which will result in their imprisonment.
That mental breakdown was intense and very dark. I am still shocked by all the taboos ALTA defied in matter of what can be in a show meant for children. Grey is a legend of voice acting.
@@kingjb554 we must not be thinking of the same character. Azula is violent and crazy. The title of this video mentions her having a mental breakdown, for crying out loud!!!!!!
@@Supasmartguy yes thats true but not a lot of things freak her out, she's usually quite calm and collected. She'd probably just live her life normally or make a plan to conquer the real world

I also met her, but when I tried to ask for an autograph, she ignored me somehow. I tried to be seen, but she was always looking elsewhere. I gave up and realized she didn't want to talk to me, but I just don't know why. My respect for her is completely gone.

What is it with actors going out of their way to say that they didn't watch the thing that they were in? I feel that they are either simply lying about it so they don't seem so self centered, or there is some ridiculous unspoken rule amongst actors that is soooo tabu if you break it... Either way it's really dumb and makes it hard to listen to any actor talking about a show or movie that they were involved in.
For someone so proud she broke down when she was defeated and looked down upon. She thought it was okay to be abandoned and alone bc she believed elites carry the burden of being alone at the top but she is not at the top she’s at the bottom below everyone she looked down on. She got what she wanted but in the end was it what she wanted? Heavy is the crown 👑 for it comes with a toll that must be paid

steven alvarez you’re generalizing tho. Even if a majority did it there’s a reason why.
That scene was amazing and heartbreaking. How often do you want to cry for a villain?
I cried for Darth Vader, the bad guy from Blade Runner, Professor Snape (although he was a double agent) Hans Gruber, Loki, and Scar.
Perfect voice actress
"I love Dante"
So THAT'S why Azula said that she'd get pregnant on a life changing journey with Zuko at a panel!! It all makes sense now!
Psss in the full version of panel, Grey tells an Zuko and Azula INCEST joke!
@@itsrectimemedia wait wha?
That scene tore me to pieces and it still does to this day
Grey too. She said she had to go into a deep dark place to get into that mindset.
Omg the first thing that popped in my head was oh no it's azula she's back!
I wonder how Azula would react if she learned that she was just a cartoon character.
She probably wouldn't care
@@kingjb554 what makes you think that?
@@Supasmartguy idk shes just so carefree, it just seems like it wouldn't phase her
@@kingjb554 we must not be thinking of the same character. Azula is violent and crazy. The title of this video mentions her having a mental breakdown, for crying out loud!!!!!!
@@Supasmartguy yes thats true but not a lot of things freak her out, she's usually quite calm and collected. She'd probably just live her life normally or make a plan to conquer the real world
she has the same last name as me and also she’s voiced so many awesome characters like wow
Dafne gone wild
LOL
Azula is my favorite female character I think ever. The girl who will play her in the Netflix Live action series of ATLA is going to have a tough role to fill.
I met her
Was she kind to you?
I also met her, but when I tried to ask for an autograph, she ignored me somehow. I tried to be seen, but she was always looking elsewhere. I gave up and realized she didn't want to talk to me, but I just don't know why. My respect for her is completely gone.
@Beh Meh she didn't WANT to see me. Is that so hard for you to comprehend?
@Beh Meh I like that you refer this pissed fan as "whiny butt". It shows you don't understand people who are disappointed with their idols. It also shows you're just like Grey Delisle-Griffin. A bully.
A lot of hate for Grey Delisle from the same people... almost as if its a small troll thing to smear her image.. then again I don’t know, never met the woman.
During the agni kai with zuko with azula’s short bangs low keys looks like Grey
Well Animators always need a reference when drawing.
What is it with actors going out of their way to say that they didn't watch the thing that they were in? I feel that they are either simply lying about it so they don't seem so self centered, or there is some ridiculous unspoken rule amongst actors that is soooo tabu if you break it... Either way it's really dumb and makes it hard to listen to any actor talking about a show or movie that they were involved in.
it’s not your work so don’t fucking worry about it.
I have seen all of Avatar in 6 days
i think its sad that she's never at least seen the breakdown, its such a beautifully animated scene
She has at this point.
I can’t believe she hasn’t watched the full series, she’s incredible in it!
Actors tend not to watch the series or movie they are in.
Johnny Depp, for example, has never watched a movie he himself starred in.
True. But he broke his rule for Black Mass. His performance in that was good, I think he was robbed for an Oscar nom.
I love her voice
Close your eyes and imagine Azula in your Head
Imagine this is someone mom and when she yells at her kids or husband and turns into Azula when she’s mad
She should've been at least nominated for an Emmy for that shit. Love all her work!!!
LOVE HER
Her voice and her fast but clear talking are perfect for cartoon series. Nevertheless she sounds much younger, than she is. :)
She is the moment!
when she said "either" a bit of her daphne came out
She truly is Azula 😂😭😂
That shit shook me to my CORE as a child, so props
For me it was when Azula shot Aang with lightning. That traumatized me for weeks.
@@itsrectimemedia Holy shit yeah that too
I don’t understand how she hasn’t seen it, nobody is THAT busy
Most actors hate seeing themselves act, Chris Evans doesn't watch Captain America as he would constantly criticize himself, same with Johnny Depp
So unfortunate she hasn't seen the full thing, she's so amazing in it !?
Now she has! That interview was back in 2018! Last year Dante Basco started doing Watch Parties.
@@itsrectimemedia yay !!
Azula 😢❤
She is amazing
For someone so proud she broke down when she was defeated and looked down upon. She thought it was okay to be abandoned and alone bc she believed elites carry the burden of being alone at the top but she is not at the top she’s at the bottom below everyone she looked down on. She got what she wanted but in the end was it what she wanted? Heavy is the crown 👑 for it comes with a toll that must be paid
It was very well written. Grey mentioned that roles like Azula are hard to come across. She’s happy with what she gets but not all her characters get that kind of development.
I love this woman she awesome
