  • Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus. The procedure is performed by interventional radiologists, who use X-ray guidance to thread a small catheter into the uterus through a small incision in the groin or wrist. Once the catheter is in place, small particles are injected into the blood vessels that supply the fibroid, cutting off the flow of blood and causing the fibroid to shrink.
UFE is considered to be a superior alternative to other procedures for treating uterine fibroids, such as hysterectomy and myomectomy. One of the main advantages of UFE is that it preserves the uterus, allowing women to retain their fertility. In contrast, hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) and myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroid) both involve the removal of the uterus, which makes it impossible for the patient to become pregnant.
Another advantage of UFE is that it is less invasive than other procedures. Unlike hysterectomy and myomectomy, UFE does not require a large incision, and patients typically experience less pain and recovery time. With UFE, patients can often return to their normal activities within a few days, whereas recovery from hysterectomy and myomectomy can take several weeks.
UFE is also highly effective at treating fibroids. Studies have shown that UFE can shrink fibroids by an average of 70-80%, and that the procedure is associated with a low complication rate. Additionally, UFE can improve symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, and pain, and in many cases, it eliminates these symptoms altogether.
In addition, UFE has a high success rate in treating multiple fibroids, as well as large fibroids. While other procedures may not be as effective in treating multiple or large fibroids, UFE can be used to treat all sizes and number of fibroids.
Lastly, UFE is cost-effective option when compared to other procedures. Since it is a minimally invasive procedure, it is associated with lower costs for hospital stay, anesthesia, and post-operative care. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for surgery, which is often associated with higher costs.
