Great video as always. We’ve had Hyundai’s in the family for a while and over the years the fit and finish has improved greatly not to mention the driving experience. I’m in an Astra 1.4 Turbo Elite 6 speed Auto (150bhp) on motability, which I am due to change next year. I will definitely test drive the i30 in one form or another before choosing my next car.
My daughter has just bought a pre-reg one from the dealership she works at. It's the 1.0 turbo but even that feels like it goes like stink for what it is. The trim level is brilliant too - everything electric, lane assist, blindspot assist, wireless charging, dual zone climate control - everything you could want (although the next model up does have a panoramic sunroof which would brighten the interior up a bit, but other than that...) and the build quality is really good, too. I would go for one of these myself.

British roads must be a lot kinder than Australian roads on the i30 suspension. I took one for a test drive a few months back. Even on the freeway it felt very stiff and uncomfortable. Zippy little car though, just too small for anything other than a town runaround. Just looked at price comparison, here you can get it for the equivalent of GBP22k or 24,500 drive away. The drive away price varies from state to state due to different registration costs, but much cheaper than Hyundai UKs price of GBP30k. Great video presentation by the way.
Nice review Pete. I subscribed. Drove the hatch last year, now seriously considering taking the plunge. The hatch that is. Hyundai badge or none, this car leaves premium German brands behind with ease. Smiles are not always expensive.. 😂😉 Keep up the good work

Hi Ped The entry of i30N into this segment of the market has to be good news for anyone looking for a real drivers car. Forget the badge and give it a try. Once again good video.👍👍👍
Saw one of them whilst dropping my dad off at Hyundai to pick his car up for a service My God especially in nardo grey that thing in my opinion is the best looking small car on the market. Pictures make the back look really tall but in reality it's not. And the ducktail spoiler is to die for.... I WANT ONE
Badges do create class level pint chats unfortunately. With that said, levels really are creeping to the top shelf horizons in many ways this last 4 yrs or so.
Funtastic. Think of an i30 Fastback as a 2 plus 2. I reckon on 'the set up' Normal handling & Sport or Sport + & you are on a winner. Reminds me vaguely as a lesser Jag E Type Coupe that I bought in '64 (also white). from Melb VIC Aussie in covid19 lockdown 2020.ps. Hy/Kia are hear to stay, & bigtime.
I have something to say... After owning a 2009 Mustang GT I can say during my test drive of the Veloster N it was faster than my GT and pulled harder. It's faster than the GTI, Miata, ST and keeps up with the Golf R but runs out of breath to the Focus RS.
Yeah but the 2009 Mustang GT only has 300hp so makes sense a VN would feel faster (more torque available earlier). A 2015+ GT would blow the VN away though. I have a Veloster N myself. Love the car but the power hasn't blown my mind.
Good luck for that! Im in the same shoes. Drove the Fastback then waited for the ST. Its out but theres no demonstrator car. Can see, can sit in but cant drive unless I go ahead and buy it after...
Nice video. Hyundai said the new suspension setup makes it more comfortable than the hatch, comparing both in normal mode, in response to customer feedback about ride quality. Did you notice a difference in comfort over the hatch? (Comparing both normal mode damper settings)
Nice review I recently got the hatch, fastback was too new for me to consider also I sat in the back and my head touched the ceiling unlike the hatch, must say I love the styling of the FB though
Don't understand why people say there are too many options in the custom mode, surely more is better? I'd definitely prefer having too many options rather than too few.
I'd much rather have the custom mode than the new Focus ST with fixed driver modes so in sport+ it's bouncing off the road, my current Golf R has the same individual pick'n'mix setting but when it comes time to change the i30N is on my test drive list.
Terrific review and I fully agree, this is a fantastic car. And not just a fantastic car for the price or for a Hyundai but a fantastic car full stop. And at the price it really is a bargain (although discounts seem much smaller than for German cars). I find it sad so many are still snobbish about Korean cars. The reality is that both Kia and Hyundai are making some great cars, like these N models, the Stinger, eNiro and eKona.
Nice bit of kit! Good price too - a realistic one, rather than paying a badge premium. Great review Peter. The punters should be queuing up at their nearest Hyundai dealership with deposits at the ready after that! 🤣 If I was in the market for a car, I’d certainly be trying one out on some of my favourite roads up here.
Had my i30N Hatchback for 1yr and 9mths now ….great car...great value.... and just one issue (Boost sensor... replaced and quickly resolved) in 11,500mls. Time for a change now.. as the only downside, as i`ve just found out...is residual values....so its going now. After watching Petrol Peds review of the Mini Clubman JCW All4.... and a test drive of the vehicle.. its being replaced by one. As much.. if not more fun to drive...and I hope.. as reliable as the i30N.
Looks like a fab car from Hyundai. I did test drive the new Honda Civic Type R last year and loved it. At the time my local Honda dealer who I have been fantastic since day one offered me that one for £30,000 with 90 miles on clock. But with 5 years 0% finance, 5 years warranty and 5 years free servicing. The only reason I didn't buy it as Mrs wanted CRV instead as needed it for my mum and little one. Fab video tho!!! 👍
Really nice looking car and looks good in the white too. I agree if it was de-badged it could look like one of the baby Mercs. No badge snob here...I had a Skoda Octavia Vrs for a few years and okay it wasnt lightning fast but it could go and was fairly well equipped. Incidentally that was white as is the S4 im now driving...just a coincidence
Hi Petrol Ped first thing my friend the strutt I got told by sales staff that you remove the brace in the back the car will fold in on itself and did you know put the suspension in sport plus the car becomes so hard that it will shatter the wheel's if you hit a pot hole.
How does the interior compare to a Focus RS. Sold my RS due to general poor quality (worse than my 10 year old Cupra K1) and on going reliability (The usual head gasket, oil leaks, steering rack x2 and poor ride quality). So looking for a replacement. Golf Clubsport Ed40 with all the spec and Stage 1is high on the list but I like this N branding too.
Elantra N is coming to US in 2022 I think. They are testing it out in Korea now (look up the vids). 2021 is Elantra remodel and the N Line (not N model) is being introduced for 2021. After Hyundai finishes testing the Elantra N in Korea I think it will be released in the US for the 2022 model year.
It’s a great car, but for everyday use (which I imagine many users will be doing) do you not think a VW GTI is a better car for £30k - better quality and probably more price competitive if bought with finance? Great video as always though Pete 👍
Let's be honest. Your not gonna be touching that better interior as often as you think you are and the touch points on this N are great (shifter, pedals, wheel) The GTIs interior is better but it really isnt necessary and the styling on this car is amazing and more aggressive than the GTI. Also GTIs are everywhere and get boring let's be honest.
Volkswagen? Don't be ridiculous. Expensive to buy. Expensive to maintain. Eyouxpensive to insure. I've never known anybody who bought a Volkswagen other than 60s to 70 beetle.who felt like they got a great value for what they spent.Sorry but just another overrated German car.
And still no DCT option. As a high mileage driver this rules it out from my list of potential cars when i change later this yr. In this budget performance hatch section, i think the Seat Lean Cupra 290 has the market licked. You basically getting a Golf R / Audi S3 but minus the 4WD at a greatly reduced price. Actually the Cupra 290 is £100 cheaper on the road than the i30N
The shake the car gets when actually booking up from stop is nearly eliminated with an after market rear motor mount. That alone should help 0-60 slightly.
I already drove 1.y Fastback - classic, 7 DCT ... with complete equipment ... and I can just say it is awesome ! N version is for most normal roads ok...maybe to high, but on other hand too expensive with all the grants to the state ... and we have like others just 5 year guarantees (:
On my list for possible next car... Or Stinger. I prefer the exhaust in this and it's manual. Stinger looks a bit better. I'm still not sure in the side profile of this car, look at side profile of this and then side profile of Toyota Prius, looks very similar, or just me?
I have driven both cars but not back to back. The Hyundai has more subtle looks and better ride quality (unless in N Mode), the Type R has a better gear change and maybe sharper steering. Both great cars 👍
@@PetrolPed you say it's not that quick. I drove an FK8 Type R at the weekend it was extremely quick but found the Gearbox very notchy and suffered the reported gear grind. Been offered a fantastic deal on a fastback but fear it will not be quick after your review. Is it a lot slower than the Type R. How does it compare to new focus ST. 👍👍
For class of fast hatch it's in, over golf or focus Hyundai saying hi guys I'm gonna just barge in here and I staying around for long time .I hope they do a ESTATE too with N that'll be a nice lineup 🙂
I know it's not fair for other viewers but I'd love to hear more about how it stacks up vs your Mini. I have a stage 1 R56 Cooper S myself which is a blast to drive. I'm looking for a new car soon and was probably going to move away from a hot hatch but this car piques my interest!
hey again Petrol Ped after some hard thinking I am know down to two cars to choose from as looking at a Focus RS 2yrs old is around 30 grand a new i30N with all the toy's 30 grand but torn to go with a bmw m40i because might make sence as after the pcp contract end's will be looking to get a x5. So bit torn witch car to get as my final sporty car
You won't be disappointed with any of them. For me if you want a fast car for all conditions and lots of theatre then go for the RS. Good fun, RWD and fast with an easier px to the X5 then it's the M140i. i30N is piece of mind motoring, new car and fast but just doesn't have the same badge as the other two. Let me know how you get on
Liked the review so much, not sure why, just one question I had was “how is the sound insulation?” Wind/tyre noise levels @ speeds above 60 miles/hour.
Great package for the price... I agree debadging the fussy back would look better. I prefer the look of the fast back to the hatch. Alas a recent very very poor experience with Hyundai on a 2018 i30 SR (Australian model now called the n-line) means that I won’t touch the brand again in a hurry.
Petrol Ped .... sad indeed. There were/ are a number of Australian 2017/18 i30 SR owners that have had/ are having issues with warm starting on the 1.6T mated to the DCT gearbox. Fortunately after several months of issues and weeks off the road ( starting, engine idling, trim durability , noisy steering) I was offered a full refund of the purchase price. I’m aware of at least 3 other Sydney owners that also were offered refunds. I believe that there is a communication issue between the dealership network and hyundai Australia which means that knowledge isn’t being shared freely. I found that Local expertise and fault translating ( where no code is presented) is woeful and there was /is a heavy reliance both on customer apathy and on dealers sending data back to Korea to try and resolve the local head scratching . The 5 year warranty is laughable.... two of the claims my dealership put through were rejected by Hyundai Australia ... which is where we got to a stalemate and Australian consumer law took over.
Really nice little car, and very good value for money.I quite like all the options, and could spend many a happy hour trying them all out! Ha ,ha what the F was that lorry doing????
i drove my i30n on the most beautiful track at the world :Spa, very nice car, what will it be after 2nd of 3th edition like Megane rs of ctr ? one of the best
Looks much better than the hatchback imo...and in white, that's looking pretty awesome. And puh'le'ase.... untuck that teeshirt (that's from the wife, not me!)
Hi Pete nice video as always. That first to second gear change unless my ears were deceiving me baulked (crunched) big time as it went into second gear when you gave it the beans ??????. I am not concerned in the slightest by the badge but at 30k the price is far to close to better much better performing cars and for me this is where these cars fall flat. Hyundia are asking just too much money for a new kid on the block in the hot hatch market. There has to be an incentive to buy one of these compared to the well established hot hatch market. Whilst Hyundia won't want to lose money selling them too cheap, if these were around say £27,500 people would take them seriously and give them a punt but at 30k, whilst some might buy it there are many who won't.
I'm going for an M3 2020, sorry, the wife wants a 2020 M3, so I checked it out, sounds nice, and registered my interest with North Oxford Garage for March 2020 delivery...wife's, don't u just luv em...😊
Does this drive as well as the hatch? The hatch seems to be holding its value slightly better at the moment so these can be picked up a little bit cheaper
Great video. I think the Fastback looks great and I’m sure I’d definitely love a blast in one, however I’ll be honest and say that I’m a pure brand snob and really struggle in cars with cheap plastics etc. I’m sorry if that’s bad of me 😐 but maybe if I had the use of one I would change my mind. 😉👌🏻
Just started to get into your channel having bought my first MINI - an F55 Cooper S and loving it. One thing...can you please, please give torque figures in lbft and not newton metres....or as well as....I haven’t a clue how they compare and whether an engine is torquey or not....I know power is often quoted in the metric PS but it’s close enough to BHP, but next you’ll be quoting fuel economy in litres/100km instead of MPG! 😊
The suspension is the weakest part...even on comfort mode it is still too stiff...great effort...oncs they get the ride sorted properly it will be a worthy contender.
Great review, as always Pete, thanks. So it's just like my i30N hatch, except a lot prettier, slightly softer on the road (which is a good thing) and a bigger boot. Bit of a win win situation really. As for badge snobbery, stuff that. Mine has been 100% reliable, the dealership helpful and friendly. Neither thing you can say about my Volvo, sadly. Depends what's on the market at change over time but at the moment this would be pretty much the only contender for me.
I have this in car in red and I absolutely love it, its like you said you can through it into any corner and it sticks to the road like glue and check out my regerstation H130NF very cool don't you think love the video by the way 👍
Sorry told you the wrong registration I have corrected it now only had 10 months mate you helped me decide with your excellent review took a while to get money together but not looked back and regretted at all cheers
This car looks fabulous but I still prefer the hatchback and in light blue. But newer cars come with too many things. Driving modes and this an that. All cool stuff but nothing like older cars where it is pure driving.
@@PetrolPed For sure it is a brilliant car. I would still buy one if I could afford it. Imagine how much an ECU for these later cars cost? If for a 2005 Renault Megane today you still pay 800£ for it and it has not even a ⅓ of the technology of this one. The electronics of newer cars is becoming more and more reliable but the day something goes wrong....its can be a very expensive fix. Keep up the good work buddy!
Got one... Completely agree with the review, big smiles all round!

Great review! Pleasant change from the endless same again German boxes.
Cheers Brian 👍
Hi Ped
The entry of i30N into this segment of the market has to be good news for anyone looking for a real drivers car. Forget the badge and give it a try. Once again good video.👍👍👍
Thank you my friend 👍
Saw one of them whilst dropping my dad off at Hyundai to pick his car up for a service
My God especially in nardo grey that thing in my opinion is the best looking small car on the market.
Pictures make the back look really tall but in reality it's not. And the ducktail spoiler is to die for.... I WANT ONE
Agreed...they look ace ! 👌
Mate your like 6"7 ....I'm 5"10/5"11 ...good space for me & my girlfriend also my friends ...great review
LOL...I am 6'3" 😜
Badges do create class level pint chats unfortunately. With that said, levels really are creeping to the top shelf horizons in many ways this last 4 yrs or so.
it gets 10/10 just for the proper manual gearbox
Oh yes...and it's a great gearbox too 👌
Yep, I agree what that 👍
Yeah but the 2009 Mustang GT only has 300hp so makes sense a VN would feel faster (more torque available earlier). A 2015+ GT would blow the VN away though. I have a Veloster N myself. Love the car but the power hasn't blown my mind.
Again very good review, mate, gotta nail that take off a little better, all ok 👌 if I manage to get to UK 🇬🇧 I’ll teach you the technique. 🦘🦘🦘
I wish they would offer the Fastback here in the USA!! It is really nice looking.
Such a shame they don't 😥
I agree, they will probably bring it here after I buy a new car.
I drove one the other day, fantastic hot hatch, just going to wait till the new Focus ST is available to drive before I buy one though.
Hard to say as I drove the hatch a year ago 🤔
Nice review I recently got the hatch, fastback was too new for me to consider also I sat in the back and my head touched the ceiling unlike the hatch, must say I love the styling of the FB though
Great car...enjoy 👍
I would of pick the Fastback, but it adds a $5000 premium (where I am at least).
Having fun at more reasonable speeds. Sounds like a good move to me.
Yep 👍
5:22 couldn't tell if that was his nose or the turbo
Don't understand why people say there are too many options in the custom mode, surely more is better? I'd definitely prefer having too many options rather than too few.
It sure is fun to play with 👍
I'd much rather have the custom mode than the new Focus ST with fixed driver modes so in sport+ it's bouncing off the road, my current Golf R has the same individual pick'n'mix setting but when it comes time to change the i30N is on my test drive list.
If I was in the market for a car, I’d certainly be trying one out on some of my favourite roads up here.
Very impressive car 👌
Had my i30N Hatchback for 1yr and 9mths now ….great car...great value.... and just one issue (Boost sensor... replaced and quickly resolved) in 11,500mls.
Time for a change now.. as the only downside, as i`ve just found out...is residual values....so its going now.
After watching Petrol Peds review of the Mini Clubman JCW All4.... and a test drive of the vehicle.. its being replaced by one.
As much.. if not more fun to drive...and I hope.. as reliable as the i30N.
Wow...great to hear 👍
Looks like a fab car from Hyundai. I did test drive the new Honda Civic Type R last year and loved it. At the time my local Honda dealer who I have been fantastic since day one offered me that one for £30,000 with 90 miles on clock. But with 5 years 0% finance, 5 years warranty and 5 years free servicing. The only reason I didn't buy it as Mrs wanted CRV instead as needed it for my mum and little one. Fab video tho!!! 👍
Cheers 👍
That doesn't surprise me...along with your spine 😂
I cant believe why hyundai dont sell this car in other countries? It looks competetive!
I din't know their reasoning behind that either 🤔
Petrol Ped the reason is there’s another N car . Veloster N
For my the Focus RS was let down by it's interior, everything else on the car is great 👍
Wish we could get this vehicle in the USA 🇺🇸, cmon Hyundai! To me it looks like a baby Audi A5.
Agreed!!!! BRING IT TO 'MERICA!
That would be an A4
Elantra N is coming to US in 2022 I think. They are testing it out in Korea now (look up the vids). 2021 is Elantra remodel and the N Line (not N model) is being introduced for 2021. After Hyundai finishes testing the Elantra N in Korea I think it will be released in the US for the 2022 model year.
You can get sonata which we dont have in europe and is beautiful
It’s a great car, but for everyday use (which I imagine many users will be doing) do you not think a VW GTI is a better car for £30k - better quality and probably more price competitive if bought with finance? Great video as always though Pete 👍
Let's be honest. Your not gonna be touching that better interior as often as you think you are and the touch points on this N are great (shifter, pedals, wheel) The GTIs interior is better but it really isnt necessary and the styling on this car is amazing and more aggressive than the GTI. Also GTIs are everywhere and get boring let's be honest.
Maybe 🤔
Volkswagen? Don't be ridiculous. Expensive to buy. Expensive to maintain. Eyouxpensive to insure. I've never known anybody who bought a Volkswagen other than 60s to 70 beetle.who felt like they got a great value for what they spent.Sorry but just another overrated German car.
I like this alot, would love to see them do an estate version too. Nice one ☝️
Ooo yeah !
Sadly with no character though
The manual is superb though 👌
The shake the car gets when actually booking up from stop is nearly eliminated with an after market rear motor mount. That alone should help 0-60 slightly.
Thanks for the heads up. That should be there from stock 🤔
I already drove 1.y Fastback - classic, 7 DCT ...
with complete equipment ... and I can just say it is awesome ! N version is for most normal roads ok...maybe to high, but on other hand too expensive with all the grants to the state ... and we have like others just 5 year guarantees (:
Such a cracking car. 5 year warranty though Ped, not 7 😄
Oh...my bad 😥
Petrol Ped although important thing about the warranty, it does cover non-competitive track days.
That sucks the Veloster N in the US gets 10/100K warranty why not with this car?
@@PetrolPed The badge on the car means from seller to buyer shaking hands theirs nothing wrong with that.
@@PetrolPed 7 years in Aus atm.
On my list for possible next car... Or Stinger. I prefer the exhaust in this and it's manual. Stinger looks a bit better.
I'm still not sure in the side profile of this car, look at side profile of this and then side profile of Toyota Prius, looks very similar, or just me?
I prefer this over the Stinger 👍
It's more of a German car than a Korean one.
I'd certainly buy one - a similarly specified Golf GTI would be significantly more expensive.
How does it compare to FK8 Type R. Is type r worth the extra money. How is the power compared. 👍
Pete. Can you review a new DCT hatchback for us soon ? Matt from Australia 🇦🇺
For class of fast hatch it's in, over golf or focus Hyundai saying hi guys I'm gonna just barge in here and I staying around for long time .I hope they do a ESTATE too with N that'll be a nice lineup 🙂
That would be cool 👍
@@PetrolPed mind you the stable mate Kia has done welll with new shape PROCEED so wouldn't be surprised if and when?
I know it's not fair for other viewers but I'd love to hear more about how it stacks up vs your Mini. I have a stage 1 R56 Cooper S myself which is a blast to drive. I'm looking for a new car soon and was probably going to move away from a hot hatch but this car piques my interest!
You should defo have a drive. It will put a smile on your face, although it's a little bigger than the Mini 👍
@@PetrolPed Yeah a test drive is definitely on the cards for sure. What would you say the best quality of its driving experience over the Mini's is?
hey again Petrol Ped after some hard thinking I am know down to two cars to choose from as looking at a Focus RS 2yrs old is around 30 grand a new i30N with all the toy's 30 grand but torn to go with a bmw m40i because might make sence as after the pcp contract end's will be looking to get a x5.
Pretty good 👍
Ok big question i30 N fastback or hatchback
Fastback every time 👍
Great package for the price... I agree debadging the fussy back would look better. I prefer the look of the fast back to the hatch. Alas a recent very very poor experience with Hyundai on a 2018 i30 SR (Australian model now called the n-line) means that I won’t touch the brand again in a hurry.
That's a shame 😥
This car looks fabulous
Yep 👍
Really nice little car, and very good value for money.I quite like all the options, and could spend many a happy hour trying them all out! Ha ,ha what the F was that lorry doing????
Emptying a septic tank 😂
Getting one tomorrow and this review has made me sure made right choice
You lucky thing...enjoy the car 👍
it's a great car, i have one, i have so much fun greets from germany :)
Hi Germany 👏
Who cares about badges! The only reason why I want one of these is because I already have an i30 and I am really happy!
Pete, I’m shocked you don’t have 100k+ subs. 🧐
That's nice of you to say. I'll keep doing my thing and hopefully I'll get there 👍
i drove my i30n on the most beautiful track at the world :Spa, very nice car, what will it be after 2nd of 3th edition like Megane rs of ctr ? one of the best
Would love to drive there 👍
@@PetrolPed you can rent a sport car over there, great choice..also i30n
There's one in there somewhere 😜😂
Macushla Marsh already keen discounts on them. Nearly new one in grey with less than 1900 miles for £23,990 on auto trader.
These N cars really punch above their weight. I am really hoping to get a veloster N dct, when they are released in the U.S.
Nice 👍
Nice video....thought you were going to go up the FOS hillclimb while you were there 👍😜
Tempting 😂
Hi Pete,
When you getting ya new Mini GP3?
Hope for delivery early next year 👍
I'm going for an M3 2020, sorry, the wife wants a 2020 M3, so I checked it out, sounds nice, and registered my interest with North Oxford Garage for March 2020 delivery...wife's, don't u just luv em...😊
Slightly different budget 😜
@@PetrolPed yeah almost double the price.
Does this drive as well as the hatch? The hatch seems to be holding its value slightly better at the moment so these can be picked up a little bit cheaper
For me these drive better than the hatch. No axle tramping 👌
I would have liked to see a full walk around of the car
Sorry, check out my 'Living with Video' that drops next Monday 👍
Super easy...super smooth...super comfortable...please drop the word super.
Sorry 😥😂
@@PetrolPed Enjoy your work make no mistake...😁😉
No active cruise control
Great video. I think the Fastback looks great and I’m sure I’d definitely love a blast in one, however I’ll be honest and say that I’m a pure brand snob and really struggle in cars with cheap plastics etc. I’m sorry if that’s bad of me 😐 but maybe if I had the use of one I would change my mind. 😉👌🏻
The plastics used are actually pretty good. Certainly all the things you touch 👍
Petrol Ped ah, ok. I shouldn’t really judge until I’ve had a good look at one. Cheers 😉👍🏻
hey ped what mode was the exhaust in quiet normal or skitzo ?
Always the loud one 😂
Just started to get into your channel having bought my first MINI - an F55 Cooper S and loving it. One thing...can you please, please give torque figures in lbft and not newton metres....or as well as....I haven’t a clue how they compare and whether an engine is torquey or not....I know power is often quoted in the metric PS but it’s close enough to BHP, but next you’ll be quoting fuel economy in litres/100km instead of MPG! 😊
That batch contains reliability also too
Superb video and review
Cheers Ron 👍
I thought you'd like this one mate 😜
@@PetrolPed jeezus, WHY CANT WE GET THIS IN USA DAMMIT?!?!??! CMON
And this cars probably has too many driving modes. It's still brilliant though 👌
Just wondering are you ever gonna show the front face
Apologies, more front footage in my living with video that drop tonight at 6pm 👍
@@PetrolPed No worries man. Keep up the good work.
