  • Tex Talks Battletech is a new series where Tex talks Battletech, Battletech lore, history, and mech combat in the glorious 31st Century. Avast Clanners, its Fightin' time. No guts. No Galaxy.
    This time around we're gonna talk about the Catapult, one of the fightiest of the fighties, and potentially one of the most recognizable heavy mechs in Battletech. Thank you all for your love and appreciation, your hard work, and your faith in what we do.

    It's a fact that before the Star League, when the Catapult's iconic doors opened it would be armed with old tech wooden catapults inside. @Random Platypus with Internet If you play without quirks, and only with intro tech in 3025 sure. With quirks or L2 variants, the Battlemaster is very much a good Light Assault Brawler, or can flex into a very good Ancor for Fast Heavy scout Lances or as the anvil to L2 Lights

    • @observationsfromthebunker9639
      @observationsfromthebunker9639 2 года назад +5

      @Random Platypus with Internet The Battlemaster is meant to be used by the Commander of an Assault or Heavy Company, or the Battalion/Regiment Commander of any type of Battlemech unit. (The original anime mecha suit that its design was exactly that!) Its presence on the battlefield should mean "VIP on the map", not "max firepower". (The max firepower is what the Battlemaster is directing at the opposition.) It has good armor, a basic weapons loadout that doesn't get in the way of battlefield management while it discourages Medium and Lightmechs bull rushing the command unit, and some non-shooting options that non-RPG settings don't make useful. To keep it competitive in the area of abundant tech toys, get double heat sinks, CASE, better grade armor, pulse lasers for the Rear mounted ones so you can laugh at the Light back-shooters, small lasers instead of MGs if you're not worried about the grunts getting in the way, and accuracy boosting tech to help out the gun buses & rocket sleds the Battlemaster is leading. And if there's a two-seater Battlemaster for the battalion/regimental leader, of course pay for connection to artillery and aerial support.

      @@ssjjshawn People who complain about certain Mechs running hot are the guys & gals who hit the dump switch every turn. The concept of choosing targets and weapons to be used each turn seems to be lost on people. But what do I know, I just ran a Warhammer for many years! 😄The Battlemaster's job is to sit back, give orders, sharpshoot primary targets with the PPC, and call in indirect/offboard fire. If enemy battlemechs charge it, it has the close-range firepower of a Warhammer and it can punch too! In pre-Clan days, that was enough to make experienced pilots respect it.

    Could it be said that the Catapult was basically the first concept of an OmniMech? I mean, if you'd take the modability into account and properly militarize that as a concept, you pretty much get an Omnimech. Rather than permanently mount weapons and equipment, you can just switch out the modules. For example, rather than painstakingly reload a missle pod, you just switch the empty one out for a full one (which is basically the concept of the Omnimech).

    • @matthewrawls1184

    Captured a city from the clan in the FASA table top game using a Lance of Catapults and a Lance of locusts as spotters. The Catapults LRM 15s were battlefield levellers in that fight. The clan mechs kept shooting and missing the faster Locusts while getting overheated and pounded from behind a massive forested hill. Like his faction within the Pentagon thought the bees knees was a stripped down variant of the A-10 Warthog without all the unnecessary junk added. Just a titanium bathtub and the GAU-8. While he certainly did force the tests on the army regarding the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, which was always supposed to be an IFV, the Army already knew what the results would be. "We need to see if this can survive the main gun round from a main battle tank." "No we don't. We know it won't survive the main gun round of a main battle tank, it's not designed to do that." So what the charming hero of the movie really did is waste tax dollars proving a point the Army agreed with. "Test interference" as described happened too... soaking down the dummies in the crew compartment with water. Because the point of the test was splintering and shrapnel, and it's really hard to check that shit if everything is a melted pile of slag.
    2. While the F-35 program has been a complete clusterfuck, and the method of developing technology over the course of weapons program experimented with it, and the Ford class carriers has been a very costly lesson in how *not* to do stuff. In the case of the aircraft itself, I will offer in it's defense, that;
    A. the cost is coming down to relatively affordable levels, and certainly isn't in the ballpark of some of the crazy shit quoted by various outraged media sources clutching their pearls while waving reports they don't actually know how to read.
    B. That the American people certainly got what we paid for, and what we paid for is an utterly transcendental weapons system that is straight out of the pages of the wildest kind of science fiction in terms of crazy shit it can do. The performance of the worst of the models in raw performance specs, the Marine Corps B model, was so good at Red Flag at Nellis one year, that the Air Force disinvited the Marine flight from MCAS Yuma and told them to go home. Because the entire exercise on the wrong end of them was crying to mother about getting their asses beat from red to blue to black. Because they'd take off and pretty much immediately get shot down.
    I had that story second hand previously, but a co-worker of mine recently confirmed it, she was at that Red Flag with an F-16 squadron. The salt in the ready rooms was palpable. And that was before the full potential of the 35 and it's datalink supporting allied forces was completely realized. You know, if wild shit like a 360 degree missile targeting arc wasn't cool enough for you.
    This is not to say Tex is wrong about defense acquisitions, real or fictional, he's entirely correct. But on those two particular examples I found what I learned on the subjects over the last few years really interesting.

      "what we paid for is an utterly transcendental weapons system that is straight out of the pages of the wildest kind of science fiction in terms of crazy shit it can do"
      In Britain we've been doing this since WWII. We're still the only nation to bounce 10 tonne bombs over torpedo nets. The M1 Abrams uses Chobham armour, developed in Britain in the 50s. And the F-35 is the spiritual successor to the Harrier, developed in the 50s and entering service in the 60s. Never under-estimate the genius of nutters in sheds.

    • @SendarSlayer
      @SendarSlayer 2 года назад +8

      @@chrisbingley I mean... We don't bounce bombs any more. We guide them.
      And VTOL tech was revolutionary, but I wouldn't call an entire aircraft a successor just because one variant uses the same technology. Boats use propellers but they're not all successors of some steamboat.

      If we want to talk trash though…m14. A .308 that doesn’t have controllability in full auto, and when we got them out of war stock for the GWOT, we had to design a chassis system that’s practically a portable bench rest, just to get the lower end of a decent DMR, and even then it has to be serviced for accuracy if you want it to “stay” that accurate. Just get a SR25 variant, or a ar10, or g3.

      Yeah, they act as if the IFV concept is utterly incomprehensible in the movie, when really the concept of uparming a mechanized infantry carrier so that it can move troops and provide fire support was a move that had seen significant success with the Soviet BMP series and European Shutzenpanzer and AMX series IFVs. The movie tries and make us think that they were trying to make an M113 replacement that got bloated when no, it was something different that was supposed to be uparmed and unarmoured to start with.

    • @kalashnikovdevil
      @kalashnikovdevil 2 года назад +4

      @@fuschiaknight1991 Right exactly, the Brad was a direct response to the BMP. It's also worth noting that when the Brad and BMP squared off, the Bradley utterly fucking wrecked it's Soviet designed counterparts.

    The catapult is one of my preferred mechs in mw5. It is great for choosing your preferred engagement range. Missiles are primary for sure, but the four medium lasers let you move more into an anti light/anti medium role in a pinch. And the jump jets let you move easily through the battlefield, so you can do overwatch, hit and run, or keep up with faster mediums.

    The awards makes me giggle so much every time. Ever since I started with battletech I was in the beginning so hardcore a clan fan boy. That specified to clan wolf first, then I get older and realize they really are not that awesome (see what I did here) , and drift some more towards Ghost bear Dominion, since they actually looked like they wanted to cooperate with ppl. Just takes them 100 years. Some really cool books on them, but as mechwarrior online comes about I'm more towards the inner sphere , I love me a good steiner scout lance. And now I am sitting here in 2020 and thinking... you know what... Khan McEvedy's what probably the most bad ass chick in the lore. And I really hope there is enough material out there for you to do a Clan Wolverine / Minnesota Tribe lore video one day!
