How to Include Headings that Appear Before the Table of Contents in the Table of Contents

In this Microsoft Word video tutorial I explain how to include headings that are included in the preamble of your document (such as abstract and acknowledgement sections) in the table of contents itself. If you apply the normal heading styles to these headings you may get unwanted numbering. How do you exclude this numbering or apply a different numbering style?
