As person who has trained for 37 years, there was no need to do an exercise like this. There are many different exercises to get the same results of the high risk exercise she was doing. I have never tried that exercise because many things can go wrong, all it takes is one time. I feel awful for this lady.
30 and 40 something soccer moms/dads don't need to do Olympic lifts, ever .. there are plenty of exercises you can do that will keep you in decent shape that dont carry the same risk.
If one goes to the gym, it’s to make oneself healthy and stronger. Whenever I hear or read stories of people getting injured at the gym, I think it’s ridiculous. Don’t do deadlifts or lift heavy weights over your head, it’s NOT worth it.
any sports medicne dr recommends not doing this unless your fully trained one weak moment in your muscles or a spasm can cause you to loose your grip/balance
so many people trying to do more weight than they can handle.. doing it for "time/reps".. and basically not being strong enough to safely perform the exercise - that is, they lack all the grip strength and stabilizing muscles because they just went right into the crossfit and 'everybody else is doing it".
That looks like a lot of weight to lift. I'm a guy and as I've gotten older, I've realized that less weight with better form is best. I almost never lift any weights now, it's all calisthenics
Well my heart goes out to her, but this needs to be said. Respectfully...Videos don't lie. IF that is her lifting in the video as depicted, her form for that movement is entirely incorrect AND unsafe. Looks like one of those CrossFit gyms....SMH. She likely would not have been permanently injured if she was taught to do that lift correctly, safely! Definitely a tragedy that could have been prevented. 😓
I am sorry she got hurt too. But I totally agree with you on the weight lifting technique that she used. I've seen others doing this and it seems so dangerous and puts the body into an off-balance stance and the over extension of the arms behind the head is a definite way to lose your grip strength and drop the weights behind the head if this maneuver is not done correctly! And why is it even done in such a fast way. Just my opinion. I wish her well and hope she can channel her experience into something positive. She is so optomistic, has a great attitude, and such an inspiration!
First, I will say that I am very sorry that this happened to Emily. As a CrossFit Coach, I watched the video over and over, and the lift was done incorrectly by everyone in the video. I am surprised that the older man in the blue shirt next to her, doesn't have a back injury. All three athletes are squatting incorrectly as well. I hope Emily can continue to increase her mobility and live an independent life with her son.
She was lifting that weight bar above her head as shown in the video. We did not see the actual accident but she was saying how she had done that maneuver many times in the past. Since it was a difficult and risky maneuver, the accident inevitably happened on that particular day. She has a great outlook and positive attitude. Hopefully she can become a motivational speaker and talk about her great attitude and positive outlook for her new life!
@@oreocarlton3343 It was a "clean and press" and it was not done correctly. As long as the coaching staff is professional, there is nothing unsafe about CrossFit. I am so sorry that this happened to this woman.
...THATS A BAD EXERCISE...IT PUT TREMENDOUS STRAIN ON THE BACK....YOU NEED LOTS OF DEADLIFTS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BACK ... BEFORE YOU DO JERKS.SHE LOOKED A BIT THIN FOR THAT EXERCISE...WHO TOLD HER TO DO IT...HOPE SHES OK...
I'm currently lying in hospital with multiple spinal fractures and I have no use of my right leg at all and limited in my left. From here I'll be sent yo inpatient neuro rehabilitation to let's to adapt to a new way of life and to try and do everything I can to walk again 🙏🏼 For me, I simply missed a step coming fine the stairs at home and landed flat on my back. This story had given me so much hope....thank you so much gif sharing this 🙏🏼🙏🏼🩷🩷
Looks like a dangerous, high impact move. I am older now but rejoined the over priced gym. I go very light...and still get in a great workout. Break a sweat and it's a good workout. I hurt my shoulder last year so it reminds me to go lighter- I really don't mind. I ran my fastest mile this week- even faster than when I was younger. My check up was great and I focus heavily on quality nutrition. Sometimes a health wake up call is a good thing. I had two of them and I am now on the right path. Otherwise, we are like the frog that sits in warm water until it boils. If he jumped in when it was boiling, he would jump out but he is used to the heat. Too many of us are used to things the way they are, even if our ways are slowly killing us. Be that second frog.
The thing is you need to do heavy weights to rly build any proper muscle round your joints and do well in older age. I quite like the weights on the pully so they don’t just drop
@@lunity1111 Me too. Just had PT on my shoulder. He said it is also very important to strengthen the supporting ligaments and not just push around heavy weights. He really likes pull type movements- not so much push (like bench press.) He has seen a lot of weight lifters get injured. Also, complimentary muscle groups so if you work one muscle hard but ignore the opposing muscle, over time, you will get an imbalance.
Why didn’t she do gym like everyone else? Now her new gym routine is dressing. And gym community is searching home for her. Just have normal routines folks. Don’t overdo it
Probably because no expert told her otherwise. Many accidents are preventable with omniscience. There would hardly be any car or motorcycle accidents if we had eyes in every single direction and better than 20/20 vision. ;)
Nothing is risk free, but this is the first time in 20 years I’ve ever heard of anyone suffering this kind of injury from Olympic lifting. There was a video last year of a woman in Mexico I believe it was who was sadly killed while squatting. She was using a bench as a safety precaution and also a smith machine, which is supposedly safer. Unfortunately these two things combined to form a guillotine. These tragic things do happen, but you can’t live life in fear of these rare and unlikely things, imo.
I’ve walked off my front step 1000’s of times and last week I stepped off onto a garden hose, rolled my foot and caused a Jones fracture. Accidents are everywhere.
She ingonred her body, sometimes you feel week, instead of reducing weights like a pro, she kept her status quo, perhaps ego, or inexperience got in the way.
Years at the gym and I always thought how people can do those kind of exercises… it’s more than likely to happen. If you lucky you stand up just being scared, the other options are hospitals and maybe whine up like this girl . It’s absolutely obvious
Clearly it IS DANGEROUS Dana Evans. She had done this move 600 times before without issue. There are inherent risks to things. If your body has a weakness, over time, it can give. Her technique was likely just fine. I workout but go lighter- still get a great workout in. Less joint point.
She's lucky she's such an emotionally strong person- tough as nails! Your spinal discs HATE overhead presses (of ANY kind); it just squishes them. In the gym, I do deltoid raises (like flapping your "wings" up and down) while holding dumbbells, and I work my triceps in the gym workout machines that let you sit down (or lie down) with your back supported. That's all I need for my deltoids and trapezius muscles. I have bad discs in L1 and L2, so I know I can't put any undo pressure on them. So far, those discs have not gotten any worse - in fact, the surrounding muscle (though careful, targeted workouts) has gotten stronger, and I have no back pain anymore. I've seen too many muscular dudes with bad backs.
The overhead snatch, if it's explosive shoulder u want, u can practice break dancing air power moves. You can practice 1 minute free standing handstands. Then handstand, drop to elbow handstand, explode to handstand, 1 arm hand hop, and airflares. It may take 20 years to master, but it's safer.

The injury occurred in her lower spine? I would like to see what the accident looked like. I guess the weight slipped out of her hands when she flung it up and it landed on her lower back.
I dont understand the comment here....yeah ok this type of exercice is dangerous and should be stopped.....but the accident is very sad.....I means....shes on wheelchair for rest of her life.....

Tbf many people do these and are fine, paralysis is not a normal risk of Olympic lifts

It's all about the weight.
Weightlifters and Powerlifters do it all the time, it’s called a snatch.
@@MRT-co1sd Agreed. I've done them hundreds of times. I wonder what exactly happened for her to damage her spinal cord like that.
