Question: I am used when I am roped in also to have girth hitched a sling to my harness for faster rapelling or putting myself on belay rapidly without clove hitching, is it possible here, to have a sling attached with a a girth hitch and also be roped in at the same time?
Would you recommend this for emergency rappelling? Or any other minimalist setups? And maybe something not to expensive
I have three Petzl harnesses as I write this and I have one more on order that I expect to receive any day. The Fly looks absolutely fascinating but I do freely admit that I am skeptical of its utility for those of us guys who are on the large side. I would love to try one to see how well it functions but I am unwilling to spend the money on one just for testing purposes. If Petzl wants to loan me one for testing purposes I'm all for it.
How to choose the correct size of the harness? I am 86cm on waist with base layer on me , but when I wear more layers for cold weather the size M is thight on me
they've replaced nylon webbing with pieces of string. I'm the wrong target audience and arguably it's how older style harnesses were put together. My worry is that there's too many points that need tying to secure it- harder to safety check. I'd just want to strap in and climb.
How about falling with head down? Will the elastic waist belt increase the risk of sliding completely out of the harness? By the way it resembles caving harness which have a low connect center, thus increases the likelihood of falling head down.
This is probably super safe, but still I'll stay with tried and true solutions that people have been (mis)using for years. I do respect the inventive ideas though
When it comes to safety, all harnesses have to pass the same CE and UIAA testing requirements, so as long as they are used properly, they'll be safe for climbing. And this style of harness, without the patented technology Petzl developed, has been a staple for mountaineering harnesses for decades (centuries?) because is can be put on without putting your feet through the leg loops, making it super fast and easy with crampons or skis on. Now comfort is an entirely different matter :)

Can you use this harness for regular climbing were u would fall and «shock load» the harness?
Yes, this is a fully rated climbing harness. However, it is not going to be comfortable to fall in because of the minimal pressure distribution. There are certainly more appropriate harnesses if you plan on falling. If you don't plan on falling but want the security of wearing a harness (like for glacier travel) this is an excellent harness for that.
Also, how many kilonewtons can the harness take in a fall?
All CE/UIAA certified harnesses are designed to pass the CE EN 12277 type C certification. This requires that in an upright pull test from the belay loop, the harness must gradually increase then hold a load of 15kN for 3 minutes. It also stipulates that the waist belt (in isolation) must be able to hold a 10kN pull for 3 minutes with no more than 20mm slippage of the webbing through the buckle. No brand publishes their internal testing data so some harnesses may hold much more than the standard requires, others may be close to the minimum. But either way, you can rest assured that your body will break long before the harness does as long as the quality of the manufacturing is consistent with the test units.

It is similar in general design, and we love the choucas light

but the fly was designed to increase the versatility of an ultralight mountaineering harness. I wouldn't really consider wearing the choucas light alpine climbing, but I would consider wearing the Fly in a scenario where a fall is definitely possible. Consider that Max Berger flew his paraglider off the shoulder of K2 using a Fly harness for the 17 minute flight to the Baltoro glacier. I don't think I'd want to hang in the Choucas light for that long, even while wearing an expedition down suit :)
How strong is that plastic waist buckle?
The breaking strength of the plastic buckle isn't really a factor since it is only used to help putting the harness on because you tie in through the 2 loops attached to the waist belt. During proper use, that portion of the harness should never be under load.
It's similar to the plastic clip buckle on the waist belt of the Blue Ice Choucas Light

That said, Pierre did mention that Petzl does have internal strength requirements that all products must pass, but those aren't publicly available.

Thanks for the feedback. The vast majority of our videos are filmed at the trade shows, and most of the folks on camera aren't there with the intention of being filmed. So although you are absolutely correct that it would have been nicer to have a better background for the product, sometimes we just gotta roll with what we got :)

I had the same thought when he was demonstrating the process of putting the harness on. But, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt until I can actually try the product in a real world scenario, which I haven't done yet.
