Completely agree that McAvoy is one of the most under-rated actors of today, deserves way more recognition. Great to see Shyamalan coming back and making a great film. Can't wait to see this. Great review.
Great review Chris. But I think that it's arguable that the entire issue of the movie was inadvertently caused by Dr. Fletcher and her ideas enabling the outcasted personalities to gain a foothold. So, I think that the Skype scene was very necessary to set up the cause of the main problem of the movie.
McAvoy's acting was fucking insane. Usually when a funny moment happens, it takes away from the serious tone in the film but idk why but in this movie that's didn't happen. Maybe it's because McAvoy was so damn convincing with his acting. Holy shit. Great film
Britain leaves the EU, Trump makes it to the Whitehouse, shorter seasons of Game of Thrones and now M Night makes a good movie... *What is the world coming to?*
My guilty film admission is that I unironically love m. Night shyamalan. It's true that after Earth, the last airbender and the happening are really bad movies, but every other movie he's made have either been pretty fun or legitimately great. I feel like the shyamalan hate has gotten out of hand, hating him has become a meme, and most critics want to just be in on the meme and treat his movies more harshly than they should, simply because shyamalan made it. I don't care what anyone says, I like the visit, lady in the water, the 6th sense, Unbreakable, signs and the village. And i can't wait to see split.
Sharky McShark I agree that unbreakable was more overlooked than underrated. I think that Signs was presented (as usually in every Shyamalan movie) as a horror movie, so maybe people got dissappointed by finding another kind of film.

shytguy Alright. It's more of a mind-blowing reveal than a twist. *SPOILER! BIG spoiler.* lol You didn't hear this from me, but the last scene of the movie is set in a diner, with people watching the news about McAvoy's character. Two women talk about how it reminds them of something else from years ago. Then Bruce Willis' character from Unbreakable appears and lets them know that they're thinking of Mr. Glass. Movie ends. David Baines - To understand the movie and APPRECIATE what it's trying to do, yes you do. If you haven't seen Unbreakable, the ending makes no sense. The incredible and unbelievable things that happen as the movie progresses makes more sense when you realize they tie in with Unbreakable.

Woody Allen has plenty of shitty movies, but what do we remember and love him for? Manhattan. Annie Hall. Mighty Aphrodite. John Carpenter has shit like Escape From L.A. under his belt, but we only think of Halloween and Big Trouble in Little China and The Thing when his name comes up. I'm from Mexico City. Shyamalan came today to present 'Split' 3 months before the oficial date of release. I agree with you that he is very humble and grateful for be able to do what he loves to do. This movie is awesome. It has the right mesure of suspense, horror and funny dialogues. James is a genius; I think, one of the best actors of this days. Split is great!! I'm still un shock
Even though Mc Avoy IS the MVAP - Most Valuable Awesome Performer of the whole Movie ... Anya Taylor Joy Gave a TREMENDOUS Performance in it... Such a Great Talented Actress
I wouldn't agree much, but she is good. I am not taking the queen's gambit into the reference. Opposite james mcavoy, she is good and a powerful actress. Indeed, if i will, she is equal to jodie foster's abilities as an actor. In the future though. She is young and has to learn. Acting is a skill which takes years of practice and commitment to hone. And she is indeed doing it. I hope her well. As for shyamalan, he needs to improve more but split is really good. He has that grey area where he needs to form a complete picture. But i will still say that any modern shyamalan film is incomparable to the sixth sense and unbreakable. Those are another level.
MY GOD...I was floored by McAvoy's performance!!!! In this work he delivers an incredible performance of multiple characters all very intense! i left very disturbed, will be locking my car doors from now on!
I have to admit, Anya Taylor-Joy in THE VVITCH had me, at times, thinking if I really was getting a little turned on by a 15 year old (or however old her character was in the film) girl. Then there is the scene with her bum and I was seriously questioning my humanity. Immediately grabbed my phone to check her age and was so relieved to find that she was 20.
Chris stays really true to his "no-spoilers or hints"-attitute. Even the little fact, that he didnt put "Unbreakable" in the back of the video but instead uses "The sixth sense" a nice little touch! Thank you Chris!
1AZ3R their all dead and have superpowers cause their aliens who live in a 17th century village who find a mysterious lady in the water who can manipulate air and water but is destroying the environment at the same time cause their really Satan who stays with his grandparents who each have 23 personalities! riveting!!!!!!
you should do a Christopher Nolan series before Dunkirk. like to hear your opinion on his films you haven't talked about. maybe your thoughts on The Dark Knight and what you think of it now. I still stand by my word!
It is very nice to see M. Night Shyamalan making good films again, I think most people know deep down Shyamalan is a good director, and it is nice to see him paying homage to one of his earlier more acclaimed films by the end!
The fact the McAvoy didn’t get a nomination for this performance is a travesty!! To see him go in and out of each personality is amazing!! Taylor Joy was amazing as well (even though the Witch is God awful IMHO.) and yes, each performance is so different...it is not just his voice playing every one of the personalities...he is a different person!
Loved your review! I have always found McAvoy underrated. His performances in Atonement, Filth, Last King of Scotland deserved more praise and recognition. You definitely hyped me for this one! And thanks for the absence of spoilers. Cheers, mate
This is the best movie of the year so far for me. Liked all the characters, the three girls weren't cliche idiots and were pretty likeable. James Mcavoy and Anya Taylor-Joy in particular played great characters both with interesting back stories, it's quite cool that M Night gave those flashback scenes because I was quite invested in that character and felt like I was reall rooting for them to escape. In fact I'd go so far as to say this is Shymalan's best film since Unbreakable. For me 9/10
Thank you for including a mention of the composer and score. Rarely do film reviews mention the music, composer, musical approach and effectiveness. As a film composer myself I appreciate being included with other talented elements that bring a story to life.
I'm really interested in watching this movie but I just freaking HATE M. Night Shyamalan for what he did to Last Airbender. That shit is unforgivable!!!!! :/
+Nicholas_ *I just freaking HATE M. Night Shyamalan for what he did to Last Airbender. That shit is unforgivable!!!!!* Are you stuck in the 2010 year, or what?
Acting - Phenomenal The “mystery” - Pretty good Cinematography - Holy crap Characters - Good but some felt non existent Overall it’s a great movie. Could have benefited a lot from extra run time. The girls were completely sidelined. I feel like more time could have been spent showing their desperate attempts to escape. Kevin felt more like a plot device. Barry could very easily have been the original personality and the movie would stay exactly the same. The beast could have been made to look a lot more muscular and inhuman. Especially since they went down the crappy cgi route.
I've been waiting for this film for a while but I saw it last night and I have never been so baffled in how I feel about a movie. I wish I hadn't grown an expectation for this film. I saw the Visit not knowing what to expect, not expecting a twist and I LOVED it. After hearing such praise for Split I went in ready to be wowed and in some ways I was. James was great, no question about that, there were uneasy moments of humor, and a good claustrophobic feel. But I felt very jerked around by this movie (I guess these were the "leaps of faith") but every time I had questions I just assured myself "It's ok. The twist will explain everything." but by the end I did NOT feel "rewarded." I was surprised this one ventured into supernatural territory without much preamble. Like many movies with turns I'll probably just need to watch it a second time to fully understand it. But I haven't been so confused on how a movie made me feel in a while.
It's great. There were some complaints that it's "style over substance", but it's a multilayered film which does have a lot of substance. Most stylized movies today get that label undeservedly.
Finally, an intellectual review on this movie! I personally really enjoyed the film and came out wanting more. It wasn't perfect but I heard a lot of hate for the film coming out of the movie theater which really suprised me. Great acting and decent plot. I mean this movie is literally character development for a villain...genius! People are entilted to opinion, keep up the good work and great in depth review!
Just noticed this video has over 600,000 views! Good for you! I have been following you for over 5 years, when did you start? I think I was with you close to your beginning.... you are the review RUclips I trust, thank you. Loved seeing you grow as a reviewer.
Please review Mr. Nobody. Not everyone will love it because it's one of those films that requires you to watch it a couple times to fully grasp the concept but the whole thing is a brilliantly orchestrated masterpiece in my opinion. I would love to see your take on it :)
Aaahhh... Thank you Mr. Stuckman. M. night has been my childhood fav of psychological thrillers since teens. Proud to say he is from my country and my state- India, Kerala
I will give you one more thing to think about it. "Your God cannot hurt me, can't you see i am not Human" it's a religious reference, then again: "rejoice the lord, rejoice" - "Your Heart is pure" and the first reference from the name Horde is "Legion - The first high Tier Demon Jesus encountered in the Desert while he was in doubt of the Lord/God" and he asked him: What is your name/ He answered: my name is Legion for we are many. I could go on and on and on since the Biblical references doesn't stop there.
I remember way back when I first saw Mr. Mccavoy in Children of Dune on the then called SCI FI. And I remember thinking to myself "That guy is goin places. He is gonna be big. Just you watch."
"Jai, what health-conscious fast food purveyor did you originally solicit to buy these chicken wings you've so lovingly reheated in a minor suicidal gesture?" Best line of the movie
Please Chris PLEASE PLEASE do a review of Filth. That's my favourite film ever and the one that let me discover James McAvoy's incredible talent. I think it definitely deserves it ;)
Watched it twice and still find it amazing! James MacAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy are beyond compare! Now, in July 2018, they are talking about "Mr. Glass", where Willis, Jackson and MacAvoy involved! Looking forward to it! In my mind, Joy's shattered character was heading home to a WORSE "monster" than "The Beast"!
"James McAvoy is an underrated actor." Understatement of the century.
VultureClone I didn't even know what he was capable of until I saw this movie. He's unbelievable. Only one other actor I can think of that could even pull this kind of performance off.

Hey Chris, this has nothing to do with Split, but I just finished watching Signs and you were right. This is a masterpiece of a film.
I have to admit, Anya Taylor-Joy in THE VVITCH had me, at times, thinking if I really was getting a little turned on by a 15 year old (or however old her character was in the film) girl. Then there is the scene with her bum and I was seriously questioning my humanity. Immediately grabbed my phone to check her age and was so relieved to find that she was 20.
mgsgamer shit she's 20!!!! just lost my boner
Haha. Good one.
mgsgamer LMAOOO
it's almost like this M. Night Shyamalan guy is the next Spielberg 🤔
Cameron Christink Hahahaha
Cameron Christink Er... do you think Shyamalan is a new director or something?
Tiny Rick no it was a joke because when he first started people called him the next Spielberg
Cameron Christink Oh I see.
Cameron Christink more like the next wes craven
Jheez stuckman is on a roll!
Chris stays really true to his "no-spoilers or hints"-attitute. Even the little fact, that he didnt put "Unbreakable" in the back of the video but instead uses "The sixth sense" a nice little touch! Thank you Chris!
The casting for this movie is where this movie really shines James McAvoy was Unbelievably fantastic
I can't wait to see Split. Thankyou for solidifying my want to not only just check it out, but to enjoy it.
let me guess, the plot twist will be that he actually has a bunch of identical brothers :D yea? no?
Ozzy no the twist is that it was aliens all along and their weakness is air
Ozzy It's all a dream
1AZ3R their all dead and have superpowers cause their aliens who live in a 17th century village who find a mysterious lady in the water who can manipulate air and water but is destroying the environment at the same time cause their really Satan who stays with his grandparents who each have 23 personalities! riveting!!!!!!
The twist is that the movie is a sequel to Unbreakable.
Malcom Alexander thanks troll
you should do a Christopher Nolan series before Dunkirk. like to hear your opinion on his films you haven't talked about. maybe your thoughts on The Dark Knight and what you think of it now. I still stand by my word!
Seth pelepchuk He did a TDK review way back when it came out
finally, M.Night Shyamalan is back with this directorial expertise. This is the most authentic review. Thanks Chris
I am so excited for this movie. I hope it's good.
Nice hoodie haha
It is pretty nice
Just got tickets to Rogue one, Wednesday December 14th. Hell yeah.
I give this comment an A-
Electric Skittles Original and hilarious... A-
Chris Hansen Stuckmann rates a lot of movies A-
***** Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It is very nice to see M. Night Shyamalan making good films again, I think most people know deep down Shyamalan is a good director, and it is nice to see him paying homage to one of his earlier more acclaimed films by the end!
This was a really good film with three great performances by Mc Avoy, Buckley, and Taylor-Joy.
Just skip the dumpster fire of Unbreakable and Glass and just watch this alone!!!
Loved your review! I have always found McAvoy underrated. His performances in Atonement, Filth, Last King of Scotland deserved more praise and recognition. You definitely hyped me for this one! And thanks for the absence of spoilers. Cheers, mate
I have failed to see a bad mcavoy film
x men apocalypse
Mr. M Narnia
Really? X-Men Apocalypse
gnomeo and juliet
Mr. M The Last Airbender
M Night is back
I'm really interested in watching this movie but I just freaking HATE M. Night Shyamalan for what he did to Last Airbender. That shit is unforgivable!!!!! :/
Move the fuck fucking fuckity fuck on.
lool It's true I should but i wont....
+Nicholas_ *I just freaking HATE M. Night Shyamalan for what he did to Last Airbender. That shit is unforgivable!!!!!*
Are you stuck in the 2010 year, or what?
Magnifai yhhhh (T_T)
And so the A- meme was born.
Tomasz Nocoń let the shitposts begin
Acting - Phenomenal
The “mystery” - Pretty good
Cinematography - Holy crap
Characters - Good but some felt non existent
Overall it’s a great movie.
But I haven't been so confused on how a movie made me feel in a while.
the sweatshirt is dope though
ravinderpal singh I'd give it an A-
Please be good! I still haven't given up on Shyamalamadingdong.
Please Review Nocturnal Animals, I saw it an it's fucked up, but I loved it
Hasn't come out in the US yet, tell me, is it any good? (Liking a movie and it being good are not the same thing)
It's great. There were some complaints that it's "style over substance", but it's a multilayered film which does have a lot of substance. Most stylized movies today get that label undeservedly.
Tom Smith I'm a film major and a VSFX minor, I'll definitely be checking it out. Thank you!
Gresh854 it'll probably get an -A
What's this movie about if you don't mind me asking??
Finally, an intellectual review on this movie! I personally really enjoyed the film and came out wanting more. It wasn't perfect but I heard a lot of hate for the film coming out of the movie theater which really suprised me. Great acting and decent plot. I mean this movie is literally character development for a villain...genius! People are entilted to opinion, keep up the good work and great in depth review!
Austin Esposito I don’t see anything wrong with Split. The hate for this amazing film is utterly stupid.
Just noticed this video has over 600,000 views! Good for you! I have been following you for over 5 years, when did you start? I think I was with you close to your beginning.... you are the review RUclips I trust, thank you. Loved seeing you grow as a reviewer.

Lololol!
AFI Fest? More like (A-)FI Fest
He says "Your GUN cannot hurt me, can't you see I'm not human." Not your God. Just FYI.
@@m74d3 yeah i know, but i mean the biblical references are all over the place!! he speaks like a Demon that became human.

Zod's Snapped Neck: 👍👍👍
If you have to mention it, then it IS your favourite scene.
I remember way back when I first saw Mr. Mccavoy in Children of Dune on the then called SCI FI. And I remember thinking to myself "That guy is goin places. He is gonna be big. Just you watch."
Saw it tonight...
*Once again, THANK YOU, Chris, for the no-spoiler review!*
Really mean it. You're the man, Stuckmann.
So does it mean that m night shyamalan is back? Gutsy move for james mcevoy working with shyamalan though. He is a good actor
I remember McAvoy in an episode of Band of Brothers!
I'm not even joking right now, where did you get that hoodie from? I neeeeeeedddd it
