I loved the concert setting. I haven’t felt that immersed in a while. But that’s about all I liked about it :( Shyamalan really likes using mental issues in his movies, and I don’t love it. It was so unnecessary in this one. ‘Ope, the killer has OCD, so he needs to do this’ as if there aren’t plenty of other reasons to do that.

@@JosephSchwarzkopf-m9kDon’t get me wrong, I love me some Shyamalan. I even love The Visit. People can criticize him without hating him. This movie just wasn’t very good, and that’s okay. It’s very rare for a director to have only amazing movies. And it is a trend in his movies that his villains have mental issues that he uses to explain their actions. It’s a little irresponsible.

    • @WdawgSmith
      @WdawgSmith Месяц назад +1

@@Johnny-ci8mware you saying that you think that most serial killers don’t have some sort of mental issue ? I think they do and I believe scientific and forensic evidence would back that up Maybe not OCD But certainly sociopathy Or borderline personality disorder
So while I could agree that in such an unrealistic movie, why does it have to be that the serial killer is realistically afflicted with a mental issue I think that in a movie about a serial killer there needs to be a mental issue of some sort Unless it’s like a fantasy killer like Freddy or Jason
I don’t think everything has to be offensive Most people with mental disorders are not serial killers but most serial killer have a mental disorder is my point
I personally have mental disorders Depression and anxiety And it’s pretty bad But I would really have to try and play the victim in order to claim that it’s offensive for mental disorders to be portrayed in a movie They are a part of society They are a part of our culture
We can’t start censoring our movies or books or caving in to every little person who has an issue with how a director uses his own money to create his own movie I mean my god If we were to just stop doing everything that “triggered” someone we would literally have to shut down the entire country and just stare at the wall. Assuming walls don’t make people uncomfortable
And I’m really quite open minded May not sound like it But I am However unless someone is forcing you to watch it I really can’t fault a guy for doing what he wants in a fiction movie I’m not a huge fan of nepotism But it’s a big part of this movie But it doesn’t offend me That word gets thrown around way too easily these days. Being offended used to carry weight Now it’s just assumed that everything offends someone So why should anyone be careful ?

I’m not saying he should change or people should stop watching his movies. I’m not going to stop watching his movies. I just wish he did it more responsibly. Something else that immediately drove me crazy was that concert was so long, there seemed to be multiple breaks in Lady Raven's set where even Josh Hartnett's daughter left her seat so they obviously had enough time to not miss anything, on top of that when they first arrive the daughter says she wanted to be there earlier but her dad says he just got out of work, so WHY with all of that, is it broad daylight still when the concert ends??? I think they made the decision to have Cooper get away with so much because of how charismatic a lot of serial killers can be. The amount of times police had a killer in custody but then released them (even if they matched descriptions) is wildly high. I think Night wanted to emulate that with how much Cooper was able to get away with.
Generally, I liked the movie but I also agree that I was disappointed when they left the theatre, I would have preferred if the cat and mouse game lasted longer, especially would have loved if they invoked the FBI profiler some more

I want to ask about the trailer. I'm a huge Saw fan, it's one of my all time favorite franchises. Recently for Saw X, they revealed the "twist" that John's surgery was fake right in the trailer. People were upset about this because it ruins the movie a little bit to know the big reveals before you even see the movie. It sounds like for Trap, they did the same thing. They revealed the dad as the serial killer right in the trailer. My question is, do you think this is becoming some sort of trend? Why would the creators of a movie want to reveal the very thing that draws people to the theaters before they even pay to see it? Wouldn't that cause sales to go down? Is there some marketing scheme I'm not understanding here? I don't want to see more of this in the future because I like not knowing what's going to happen before I sit down to actually watch the film.

But without knowing Cooper is the killer in Trap, I don’t think there would be much suspense to advertise with, it would be too vague to market

Thanks for this! Looks like a rental for me. At this point, most of M. Night's films have odd, robotic sounding dialogue. I recently re-watched Knock at the Cabin, and it's the epitome of the "you can write this stuff, but you can't say it" style that he just seems to DO, now. I really don't know why, either. There's a Wes Anderson quirkiness M. Night has tried (see: Signs, the Happening) where the strange dialogue works because it injects some levity. But in Knock at the Cabin, I didn't appreciate it. As long has he keeps getting projects, I suppose we'll have to live with it.

I understand that the weird dialogue with Cooper was intentional, but some of it came off as pure exposition. For instance, when the guy at the t-shirt stand tells Cooper that it's a police trap with no way out-unless, of course, the killer manages to go backstage - it felt oddly specific and unnatural. For a moment, I even thought Cooper and this guy might know each other and that the t-shirt guy was subtly trying to help him.

There were some good tidbits in the story. The singer would need serious bravery when she decided to manipulate his daughter to get back to his house rather than dropping them off at the corner. Basically just buying time and looking for the info needed to get the cops involved. But look, he threw down the challenge when he took the singer aside and showed her the prisoner, and put his survival "in her hands". Now she took that personal and decided right then she would not knowingly let that guy die. Different people react to a challenge in different ways, and should we be assuming because she's a celebrity and a pretty girl that she would just walk at her first chance and let that guy die? I thought it was cool that she didn't back down and stayed in the mix. Also Josh dropped a hint that the profiler had "really briefed you very well about me" so you can ponder on what prep they might have given to her. Also i liked when his mind starts racing and shes able to silently get out of the car. His eyes are moving while he tries to figure out how this happened and later you realize this "computation time" is when he probably realized his wife was involved. That was a nice touch.

He's messing around with people, tricking and fooling his way around without getting caught, creating distractions, hiding... at some point there's just nothing else he can do, the possibilities are not infinite within this concert, so leaving it and changing the setting for the second half felt like an organic and refreshing reinvention.

I haven't seen it, and don't plan to (I just don't want to empathize with a killer), but what seems strange to me is that Lady Raven would know about this plan, let alone ANY of the employees working there. First of all, this concert would have been planned way in advance, before the police found that ticket stub at the crime scene. So it's not like this concert was intentionally "set up" as a trap. And so why would they even tell any of the performers or employees or ANYONE what they're doing there? If anyone asked, they could simply say "oh, we have a potential terrorist threat, it's just extra security, basically just practice for us." etc.
Also, Cooper really didn't have anything to worry about. I mean, it's established that he's such a good liar, I'm sure they wouldn't waste too much time interviewing him. Ironically, it's really only knowledge of their actual plan that makes him panic and draw attention to himself. That would have been cool if the FBI profiler actually purposely had hints dropped, so that he would panic and reveal himself. Which is basically what ended up happening.

He repeatedly escaped from authorities, he led a normal family life while simultaneously leading a separate existence as a killer, and he pretended to be hurt to lure people in so he could snatch them into his car. I also LOVED Josh Hartnett’s performance. He was phenomenal and while I enjoyed the movie overall (despite having to definitely suspend my disbelief lol), he made the film for me. I actually thought the movie got progressively better after the dream girl scenes. Though that's potentially for a few reasons, I really didn't like all the singing moments, all he really did at the concert was probe ways out so it never really felt high stakes, and when he did get out it was through something that didn't really feel like much before built up to it. So I was kind of relieved when we moved away from the concert. The unbelievablity didn't really bother me since I was having much more fun at that point and I do enjoy a good protagonist shift.

I even thought the twist would be that the dad himself lured the FBI to the stadium so he could get close to the profiler for whatever reason, because I could not fathom how they got a tip that the killer would be at the concert without knowing his identity. It would have made more sense that she would allow the FBI trap to be set up in the first place at her concert if he had killed a loved one. It would also make more sense that she would have followed him to his house to get revenge for said loved one dying. I thought that was a big missed opportunity. Can you address the huge continuity error… They get out of a concert and it’s still light outside, the middle of the day? Didn’t make any sense.

Well it was a short concert for one and the concert was midday…

That was not a short concert. I counted at least two intermissions.

They specifically said at the beginning that it was a midday concert.

@@DarkPrince784It wasn’t an intermission, they were “changing the stage for the next song”. And the concert resumes while they’re still away from their seats (“hey isn’t this that song you’re always listening to? Let’s get back to our seats”) so it obviously wasn’t a full “intermission”.
Even still, a “long” concert would be 3 hours. If this one started at 2pm (because as they said at the beginning, it’s a midday concert), it’s absolutely realistic that it would still be light out by the time they leave.

I COMPLETELY agree. So unrealistic and predictable, but I had fun watching it in the theater at least.

My opinion…I think ppl are too smart to watch movies. It’s like those kids that skip grades in school because their intellect is higher than their grade level. Yet, ppl act like they still need their hand held, it’s very confusing. Do ppl want to be the characters…but in real life? Like if the situations that happen in these movies happen to a person in actual life, they’ll be able to think fast in a hurry, drop kick the villain, run at high speeds, trick axe wielding maniacs, & rescue the baby at the top of the skyscraper. Piece of cake right? We can go down a whole rabbit hole once we start saying what characters should’ve did; like we’re pitting them up against a situation we would master easily. It’s confusing, to me at least. I liked the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t predictable to me I was surprised at a couple of situations that happened. I give it a 3/5 & it’s re-watchable 😊

I thought the movie was fun and the theatre was full of chuckles throughout. It's not great by any means but it's a good movie to just watch and not think too much about lol

When he says to Lady Raven...'when I saw you i wanted to kill you' (paraphrasing)... I think he was referring to seeing her before the concert...and THAT'S why he took his daughter there to begin with...to kill Raven. Probably totally wrong, but you'd think the mom would take the daughter to the concert, not him, and he's the type of character to be very calculating. Plus, the mom didn't know about the concert until she found the ticket.
