Story about aluminum windows that don't have a thermal break. I bought my first house in 2010 in central Virginia. The porch was 10 foot wide and under the roof of the house. The house was about 10 years old. There were two windows that look out onto the porch and both had water damage on the inside bottom sill. It was almost impossible for the rain to reach those windows because of how back they were from the roof edge. We bought the house and figured the water damage had to be from something the previous owners had done, like setting cold drinks in the window sill and the condensation causing the water damage.
What we found is that the water damage was from condensation, but it wasn't from cold drinks. The aluminum windows were double pane insulated, but there wasn't a thermal break in the aluminum frame. During the cold winter months the window frames would get so cold that water would condense on the inside of the aluminum frame and then pool in the window sill. This cold weather condensation is what was causing the water damage. During one particularly cold spell we actually had frost on the inside of the aluminum window frame.
Same in our rental house all fall winter and early spring, theres constant moisture on the frames,
And it actually causes black mold to grow on it as its constantly wet, we clean it every month but its a pain in the proverbial.
Yeah, I’ve been a builder out in Southeast Virginia for 25 years and I have seen some real garbage when it comes to windows, new construction and remodels some of the time you’re just better off replacing them depending on the application pull the siding off and redo it put a new construction window and you’ll be so much better off
@@steveanderson4768 We did replace some things with better things in that house in the 3 years we owned it before selling it.
Sink faucets in both bathrooms and the kitchen. Overhead lights on the porch. A few other things I'm not remembering. Every time we replaced I would later find the original thing at Lowes and the construction crew installed the absolute cheapest thing on the shelf from Lowes.
The house did have hardy plank siding and one extra row of cinderblocks in the basement making for a higher basement ceiling. It had gable vents for the attic, but no soffit vents.
My realtor had been in the business for 40+ years, had built his own house by hand, and was the father of one of the guys I graduated high school with. He looked after us as if I was his son and I learned a lot about what to look for when buying a house.

Matt, this is a great product to keep an eye on. It would be nice to get a little deeper frames to accept Litezone glazing. I haven’t been able to get them out of my head since the Real Rebuild project.
I want a double double window in a concrete wall so there 2 columns in the middle 1 on each end a space between the middle and a box on either side then do the flower boxes to conceal the completely flat entrance and privacy on the windows with plants that reduce heating as well

All you have to do is build a front porch with columns so instead of the 1-2ft over hang you bridge the gap from the building to a span off the front of the building and then it get bolted to the wall of the house or just not finish the windows or doorway and have a second finished wall under a balcony instead of knee wall for window you put flower beds in front and the space between them is a literal gap in the structure like a hallway

Exterior beading, I thought we moved way from this years ago, due to thieves could just pop the beading off, remove the glazing and enter your home very quietly.

A few months ago a Green builder told me he priced Alpen High Performance windows (triple pane) alongside higher end (but worse performing) Anderson and, I think Baldwin, and Alpen came out cheaper. Don't assume, get bids.

I’d love to know is where the price tag on these windows because some of these windows are indoors are just absolutely ludicrous pricewise they’re beautiful but you know when you’re talking $500 a foot for a patio door plus install really

They do look nice, but every builder we met with to build our beachfront house was strongly opposed to aluminum windows due to the salt water.
I have the same issue for my NJ oceanfront condo. I think paint or no-bare-metal may be the answer. My building has aluminum railings in perfect condition from 1973 and they are painted.

In north america, ranging from northern to southern zones from 0.22- 0.32 u value at least for their casement windows

I saw .17 for fixed (which is typically the lowest).
@@eh_bailey Fixed is a great move, people should install a lot more fixed ones. Not all need to be operable, and you get instant savings and performance gains.

Stone, concrete, and glass are all great thermal conducters, but not great electrical conducters; let's not confuse thermal and electrical conductivity.
For metals, good electrical conductivity does indeed imply good thermal conductivity.
