  • Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
    In this video we discuss how to create patterns that include matte and gloss finish. It's a fairly simple technique that can yield very interesting results. I'm painting a stratocaster guitar in this video. It already has a matte finish black paint job on it. Here I show you the simple process for adding a gloss pattern over that.

    The 3m blue tape, designated "edge lock" has a little less adhesive. Traditionally in residential painting we use the green tape for blocking oil base and for exterior surfaces as well as being the only effective type to mask off masonry, such as brick or concrete, from spraying with an airless machine

    Thanks this is probably the best way to go when trying to paint something high gloss black. Most the time when we paint things we have to sand at it taking away its color trying to make it flat as possible. So why not use flat or mette black with clear coat. Thinks bud it looks so nice

    Great Job Brad! I love your video's man, always super helpful. I did autobody work for about 3 years, started off just doing prep work like scuffing bumpers, then became the owner's painter's assistance. Mixing all the paint for the days jobs, moving all the jobs into the booth and covering, cutting and taping the plastic if we we're painting fenders, QP's, hoods, etc. It was a lot of fun and has really helped personally for my channel as I do a lot of computer case mods and paint jobs. I think the Spray Paint works great and canned clear but I'm going to be investing in an HVLP Gun very soon so I can buy automotive paint from Sherwin WIlliams Auto. This way I can just use single stage and I'll also have way bigger selection of color. Siked to get that going!! Keep up the great work my man!!

    Want to do a gloss black top with satin back and sides...
    Thinking:
    1. Primer
    2. Flat black
    3. Satin clear on everything
    4. Gloss clear on top over satin clear.
    Will this work well if i sand between coats obviously?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 лет назад +1

      That should work fine. Or you can just coat the whole thing satin and polish the top to a high gloss. That would avoid any tape ridges.

  • @brenolabs2532

    Brad, if we inverted the paint job? (Make the all body in gloss finish, and put some stripes to keep gloss, would be easier? My idea is a EVH guitar, all matte black with gloss stripes. Awesome video btw!

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  3 года назад

      You would need to sand the stripes to put the matte overtop if that’s what you mean.

  • @ledassz
    @ledassz 2 года назад

    Hi Brad,
    Put very simply, I have a design on paper which requires some gloss white, next to matte black.
    I wanted to do it as follows:
    - Paint the base coats
    - Tape of the part I want in black later and paint the white gloss base colour on the un-taped spots
    (----> other option is to not tape anything now, and put the gloss white on the whole body first)
    - Lightly sand base coat
    - Paint the gloss clear coat on the white base
    - Polish
    - Remove tape
    - Tape of the already painted white gloss
    - Lightly sand base coat
    - put on the matte black base colour
    - Matte clear coat
    - Remove tape
    So you would have a nicely polished gloss, in combination with a matte finish next to it.
    Do you think this process could work?
    Regards,
    Lenny

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  2 года назад

      Hi Lenny, yes I think that process could work as long as you are careful about the polishing.

    • @BradAngove

      Generally that is from surface contamination. You need to make sure you properly abrade and clean the surface. On metal you also need to ensure that you’re using a metal compatible primer.

  • @christianespina5433

      I had about 5 paint jobs on this guitar when I did this haha, but if it already has a paint job you can just sand it a bit with 400 grit and then go straight to your matte black. If it’s on a fresh, unpainted surface you will want to prime it.

    hey Brad. Love the videos. im currently painting a guitar and I'm doing a "golden teak" tinted varnish on the front. i was planning to do this gloss/matte black style for the back and sides of the guitar. I don't want to mix finishes so would it work if i was to brush on a matte varnish, let it dry, then mask and brush on a gloss varnish? both varnishes are oil based and it would be going over rustoleum primer, and rustoleum flat black

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  7 лет назад

      You should have no problem putting a coat of gloss varnish on top of a dried matte varnish finish. The part that concerns me is brushing varnish over the flat black. I've never done it, so I suggest you test it out before you do it on anything important. It sounds risky to me.

      Did I never answer this? I must have missed it somehow. I’ve done an acoustic on this channel before. You just have to use the right type of paint so you don’t screw up how it sounds. The paint I used in this video would be a poor choice.

    The problem with taping is that there is ALWAYS a small lip on each side of the striping.. The best way to combat that problem is to buy Graceys Nitrocellulose lacquer paints. They're a bit pricey, but WELL worth it. Then u get 1200 grit wet sand, use warm soapy water and gently sand the edges. It's a tedious job, but if u want your axe to look good, you'll put the time in. I do custom fenders for alot of people and have sold a bunch as well. Basically I do custom shops for half the price

      With high quality high grit paper. Then I polish it obviously. Just like most who uses modern techniques to achieve quality results.
      The water is less of a problem on something like this than it would be on nitro, but still not worth the risk as it doesn’t actually accomplish anything if you’re using good paper.
