Hayden has said that Ethel is an “unreliable narrator” of her own story. They put a lot of work into building a universe for Preacher’s Daughter, and one element was a missing poster for Ethel. She spent her life just wanting to be loved by a man, so she recollects this encounter as a great romance…but the truth is darker. She was actually kidnapped by Isaiah, and whether it be the drugs (that come out in the next song) or Stockholm Syndrome, how she recalls the story isn’t reality. This sounds like a happy song… which makes it heartbreaking when you know the truth.
I find an immediate connection to Ethel Cain since I started listening to her. For me, a trans girl who had a religious upbringing like hers for much of my life, it's revolutionary that her sound is gospel pop. I once again find delight in a sound that in one way or another accompanied me. Thank you for this magic doll. xo
