This was great. Rural China living is fun. My family has been living in a village outside Lijiang, Yunnan for a few years now. We (including my two homeschooled kids) have learned to farm, to raise chickens, play hide and seek in the nearby forest, and have been having a great experience.
The most important think is that you look so happy to return back to China and also Congratulations for your new job. The Chinese countryside is so peaceful and there you will spend awesome days Thank you for sharing this fantastic video

You can do some "Shorts" whenever you have a minute. Whether it is riding down a country road, or just chatting with the chickens, or listening to the birds, we appreciate/enjoy any updates no matter how small.
I’d TOTALLY live in rural China, especially close to those rich cities such as Hangzhou. Convenient (albeit no TOO much, which can be kinda boring sometimes) but reclusive and green spaces, as well as a place way more linked with traditions than the big cities. Perfect.
Always enjoy your content, whether visiting family in the States, negotiating the chaos of India, or in your chosen home of China. You do seem to be happiest back in China! Having a new job and and continuing your RUclips channel is more than enough to handle without taking on house renovations as well. As much as we might like a version of Katherine's "This Old House" in China I think the work involved, along with the expense of repairs might be a bit too much. Look forward to learning more about your new job.
Alongside with Suzhou, Hangzhou is my favorite city in China. Capital of the richest dynasty in China’s history, the West Lake, Xixi Wetlands, the old buildings and the greenery of the surrounding area… Beautiful region.

i retired in my mid 50's when they offered me early-out. i used to travel 8 months out of the year up until i had to look after my mom, and then my dad in their latter years. it's time to do the things you couldn't do when you were working. enjoy your retirement.

hangzhou... my dream city, i plan to study there before the pandemic start and now im not sure if i got the time.. i live in beijing 7years ago but rural hangzhou a bit different with rural beijing such a great experience to live in china to see things you think you know but you dont. I taught and lived in Lin'an outside of Hangzhou a couple of years ago. It was beautiful. I might also move to Nanjing Xianlin soon too. Let me know how you liked it there.
I was born in the place where you were visiting. And I finished my High school just several kilometers away from the place in your video. After many years studied outside of Hangzhou. I finally returned and now working in an Institue near the place I was born. I have seen many of your videos. I used to think that only Chinese people had a strong aspiration for an idyllic life because of cultural reasons, but now, I firmly believe that it’s a universal desire that is shared by all human beings.

Kathrine and the Rural China bike tours are back, love it. I see a new bike. I was already wondering with the "old" bike whether you have adjusted the seating position ergonomically. Since you ride your bike a lot, I would advise you as a former cyclist to adjust your seating position. So you could save a lot of power. My suggestion is the 4min video from adventuresportu: How to Set Your Bicycle Seat Height. Keep up the good work, thank you.
This isn’t my bike, it’s a public share bike, my bike is in storage in Chengdu 😭😭 I hope I can go get it next month. For me comfort is more important than efficiency/speed so I keep the handlebars higher than the seat , it also is because I am filming while riding so better to be sitting upright instead of hunched over the handlebars , but it does make me quite slow 🤣 I inch along and enjoy the scenery. Hahaha
Love the traditional country kitchen with the wood stove! A little more of a hassle, but so worth it when having guests over and cooking a meal for many!

With relative cheap labour and materials (you could even do it yourself), you shouldn't have much problems transforming one of those properties into a dream home.
I was born and grew up in Hangzhou. Came to the U.S. in 1995. Now my daughter decided to go to NYU Shanghai for college and her reason was it’s boring to go to U.S. colleges. What a circle of life! I would imagine curiosity must play a role for your life choices.
Since last year, I've been exploring some of Hangzhou's rural areas, and in Yuhang (余杭)and Linan(临安)I've discovered a lot of breathtaking places. Enjoy your life in Hangzhou!
Reminds me of a time long ago living in my Grandma's house in Zhongshan Shaxi. Except the house was probably built some time in the 1800's. Rural life has it's charms no doubt.

I prefer rural life too, and that's why I moved to US. I was born in a small village in hubei, and then go big cities for college and work , and now lived in SF bay area and quite enjoy the rural life here. Have fun.
I lived more than 5 years outside of Pingyao 瓶窑 in a little village called Penggong 彭公. It is not Convenient living in that kind of area and kind of boring. Going to the city took me an hour on good traffic conditions with my own car. Making friends with local villagers is difficult because life is just too different. However I wish you good luck on your endeavors.
Great video. The rural area looks more vibrant than the village my mom showed me in 2019, which was a ghost town near Guangzhou in SE China (all people emigrated or live in nearby Kaipeng). Loved you showed the insides of the rural houses. It looks like my moms which we couldn't go in (she didn't have key to her abandoned family home). If I had the money, I retire to my mom's home & reno it.

Renting in the countryside is not too difficult in our area although you can never be 100% sure about how contracts will be observed. Buying of course is impossible, unfortunately. it’s a public share bike , my folding bike is still in Chengdu 😭😭 hope I have time to go and get it and my other things next month , I have been too busy lately
This is very interesting to me. I am American Caucasian, my wife is mainland Chinese. With my sister in law living in Hanzhou, we also toured a little bit into the surrounding country side. Only 20 minutes into the mountains there are clusters of beautiful spic and span tea fam houses. They all have pretty much the same 4 quadant floor plan, the shop room ground floor left. I pipe dreamed of getting one of those for retirement, but my wife said it is impossible. Allocation is strictly controlled. On the other hand, in my wifes home town in the provinces, house is no problem, nobody wants a standalone house. Everyone wants new condo. Renovation no problem. There are myriads of small home finishing contractors. All condo towers sell the units unfinished. Finishing is a huge business.

Those roads of countryside were designed many years ago where rural China not much cars . Pretty narrow roads can’t hold two car’s lanes

I totally enjoy the quietness of the countryside though, so precious. Away from countryside there is constant noise of vehicles, so hard to get away.

Nanjing in general is nice but xianlin is super boring , I don’t recommend it tbh 🤣

Convenient living in that kind of area and kind of boring. Going to the city took me an hour on good traffic conditions with my own car. Making friends with local villagers is difficult because life is just too different. However I wish you good luck on your endeavors.

现在老家邻居们大多都是这些新小洋楼的样子了,真令人羡慕。
Great video. The rural area looks more vibrant than the village my mom showed me in 2019, which was a ghost town near Guangzhou in SE China (all people emigrated or live in nearby Kaipeng). Loved you showed the insides of the rural houses. It looks like my moms which we couldn't go in (she didn't have key to her abandoned family home). If I had the money, I retire to my mom's home & reno it.
I did a bike tour there , the villages there are all soooo empty but the architecture is super interesting

Renting in the countryside is not too difficult in our area although you can never be 100% sure about how contracts will be observed. Buying of course is impossible, unfortunately. This is very interesting to me. I am American Caucasian, my wife is mainland Chinese. With my sister in law living in Hanzhou, we also toured a little bit into the surrounding country side. Only 20 minutes into the mountains there are clusters of beautiful spic and span tea fam houses. They all have pretty much the same 4 quadant floor plan, the shop room ground floor left. I pipe dreamed of getting one of those for retirement, but my wife said it is impossible. Allocation is strictly controlled. On the other hand, in my wifes home town in the provinces, house is no problem, nobody wants a standalone house. Everyone wants new condo. Renovation no problem. There are myriads of small home finishing contractors. All condo towers sell the units unfinished. Finishing is a huge business.
