Gin is a diversion from my love of whiskey. I've been a Beefeaters fan for my entire adult life. I normally do Gimlets but have since moved to Rickeys. At the ripe old age of 73, I'm getting itchy to try other gins. My next stop is The Botanist. This video gave me new options to try.

After 40 years of drinking various gins I’ve settled on five that now always sit in my cabinet. Plymouth and Roku are easy, quality, subtle gins while Monkey 47, Gunpowder and Tarquin’s blue bottle are more characterful and impactful without being clumsy. I’ve drank many others that have been very pleasant but those five are permanent fixtures in my gin department. Cheers!

If I have one complaint on your comparison videos (not just this one, but your whisk(e)y ones as well) is that your comparisons are rarely price comparible. I don't think most of us are going to be considering a bottom shelf bottle with a mid priced bottle. Yes, there are higher priced bottles that are not worth the money, but those should be compared to other bottles in the same price category for a valid comparison. For example, in this video, a comparison between Bombay Sapphire and regular Tangueray might have been more appropriate. Or Tangueray 10 vs. one of Bombay's other options.
Agreed. "Well gin at $10 a bottle is crap. Buy this $35 bottle instead." Okay, that criticism was harsh, I apologize. But I noticed the disparity first and especially when comparing the $12 bottle of New Amsterdam (classified as a London Dry) with the $30 Plymouth (a Plymouth style gin). So not only a price tier difference, you conspired apples to oranges -- or shall I say junipers to... other botanical in gin. That said, love the videos! I'm not quite an intermediate level cocktail enthusiast, but I agree that there were some odd "comparisons." ❤️❤️

As an avid gin drinker for decades, I enjoyed your presentation. I think, however, that you may have transposed the date of the release of Ford's gin. It was 2012, not 2021. Also, your choice of reviewing Hendricks Midsummer was confusing as it was a limited release and no longer available. I did enjoy learning about the historical background of the gins and the ingredients comparisons. I was surprised to hear how recent some of these were developed. Thanks.

Just got a bottle of Brokers and Noilly Prat. Very nice martini. Beefeater is definitely the classic gin if you can’t decide where to start. Can’t go wrong. I don’t care for Bombay Sapphire. I do like Tanqueray 10 martinis if I am feeling fancy.🍸 Cheers! Happy New Year!

I find regular Bombay less rough than Sapphire. I like New Amsterdam in the lower price range. I think Seagrams is the best of the Cheapies smoother than you would think. If I’m drinking some higher price stuff I like Hendricks:) Thanks for comparisons but I find Tanqueray a little harsh. I generally drink Gin neat with Angostura or Peychaud’s bitters. It’s pretty much whiskey season now:)

I’m 75 and my wife and I have enjoyed gin and tonic in the summertime for probably fifty years. We insist on making it out of Beefeater gin and Schweppes tonic water. In our opinion no other ingredient combination compares, and isn’t a real G & T.

I'm relatively new to gin, but am in complete agreement on the ones you mention that I've tried. Aviation is appropriately named, since it reminded me of nothing so much as jet fuel. Beefeaters is my go-to. Thanks for the other recommendations -- my daughter's been after me to get some Sipsmith.
My father always made martinis with Beefeater and it’s my favorite gin too. I’ve tried the others you recommended and I like some of them a lot, but my go-to gin is always Beefeater.
I experiment with a lot of floral cocktails, I love those Hendricks floral special editions for that. But Monkey 47 is better for just drinking neat or rocks.
I do like some of the floral special editions. I believe liquor producers are going the way of beer producers getting far afield of their standard offers. I'm a Beefeater, Tanqueray 10 guy normally when in the mood for a Martini. Really enjoyed the comparisons. There were a few I've never tried and so have no opinion, but agree with your evaluation of everything I have tried. I noticed the Citadelle behind you. Would be interesting to add that and regular Tanqueray and Hendrick's to the evaluation process. Also Dalton, St. George, The Botanist, North Shore Distillery No. 6 and No. 11, Dingle, probably others that don't immediately come to mind. Some of these may not be widely available so not worth reviewing. I'd skip all the flavored gins, too, unless you want to do a video on how those might be used in cocktails. Ideas for Part 2!

Tanqueray No. 10 for special occasions & Tanqueray normal London Dry Gin as my evening aperitif. But don’t add ice as it waters it down, just keep the Gin, Tonic water & limes in the fridge & put the glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before pouring.
My favourite London Dry style gin is Brokers. It has the complexities of Bombay Sapphire with the intensity of Tanqueray. Other gins worth a taste are Ungava Gin, made with botanicals fround growing on the tundra near Ungava Bay in Quebec and Gin Mare from Spain with it's own unique style.
Seagram’s Extra Dry Gin is my go to for martinis, because of the dryness. I use very little Vermouth, and Olives stuffed with Jalapeños. It’s lip smackingly good. I don’t like “floofy” gins except for other cocktails like gin and tonic.

Plymouth has been my regular gin for over 25 years now, appealing to me both for its excellent taste and its history, but recently I've been delighted to discover another historic gin that has been reintroduced: Booth's Finest. This is one of the oldest gins in existence and, from being one of the most widely available brands, had been neglected by Diageo and allowed to go out of production. Acquired by Sazerac a few years ago, it is now available again, though not widely advertised for some reason. Matured in sherry casks, it has a yellow colour and mellow taste. So I now enjoy both Plymouth and Booth's. Booth's also had another variety called "High and Dry", advertised as the driest gin in the world. I wonder if Sazerac intend to reintroduce it?

I happen to have found my drink other than Rye with Ginger Beer and that's the Negroni, So gin was now on the 2 bottle list of mine, We have a local gin in Oregon called Wild Roots, I think it's great but hell after watching this I will take your word for quality . I do like the Beefeater. The orange & bergamont gin from Wild Roots is recommended. Great vid.

interestingly, I agree with all of your choices there EXCEPT Tanqueray 10, which I think smells and tastes like an aftershave. I'd take Bombay Sapphire over Number 10 every time.
Very informative! I've only purchased 2 of the underperformers. The empress lingers on the shelf. Didn't hate aviation but not particularly memorable. Plymouth is my most repurchased gin by far.
Not a big gin drinker anymore since I switched to Scotch-far less damaging to the liver. I highly recommend Burnets for its fine taste,low proof, and price. 94 proof is way too much!

I was turned on to Fords at Butcher's Union in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's nice. I'd like to see reviews of vodkas - my favorite, by far, is Prairie Organic Vodka.
The best gin I have ever seen is Monkey 47. I would never use it in a cocktail. Second place for me goes to GB gin from Great Britain. Made by someone who discovered they needed potatoes and so started farming. I thought Tanqueray had no citrus component. If we are drinking it, I give it a splash of orange bitters. Must be just me. I much prefer Bombay to Bombay Sapphire. Also the price is cheaper and I suppose that is because all the ad money is spent on the Sapphire. I have no complaints with Beefeater or Gordon's. Gordon's is just for cocktails, and this is just my opinion.

As a Yank who lived and worked on a British ship for four years I learned to appreciate gin. My go to cocktail is a gin and tonic and rarely drink martinis. Your analysis is very good and I do not dispute what you have said except to say I have a very individualized taste and I am frankly in favor of citrus forward gins. Despite your less than favorable reviews of Tanqueray Rangpur and Bluecoat I unapologetically declare these two as my favorites ... for mixing. In my view if you are mixing gin in a cocktail it does not have to be complex or subtle, although drinking neat is another matter. It is a matter of taste after all. By the way, being a Philadelphian does not prejudice me in favor of Bluecoat, but it does Philadelphia proud that such a fine product is produced in the City Of Brotherly Love.

It is a great gin in my book, interesting due to its heat from the sansho peppers and the citrus from the yuzu and kabosu botanicals. It stands completely on its own (I like it on the rocks with a splash of water), and it seems too delicate to mix or even garnish. Dr. Bombay come right away! I've gotten used to the stronger sapphire version. It's really a matter of taste I guess. I don't care for the standard Tanqueray. To me it has an off taste and I feel I have come a long way from the Seagrams and the bubbly glass bottle. Ever since I discovered blue cheese stuffed olives I can't make a martini without a few. Yum.

An excellent comparison of various gin pairings. However I think you missed an obvious pairing. Hendricks (regular) vs another cucumber gin. A lot of people like the smooth flavor of Hendricks and we have some other clone cucumber gins (Esme). That would have been a good pairing to evaluate.

I tried Aviation gin, and... it just doesn't carry the kind of oomph that I like in my gins, sadly. I love you, Ryan, but it is a no for me. I actually got to try some local gins when I was in Cornwall, back in 2023, which were quite lovely. They were from the Rock distillery, and one was an orange peel gin, and the other was their "cherry kiss." They were both quite lovely!

Weird comparing flavored gins to non-flavored gins. I don’t think anyone is buying a flavored gin and looking to use it like a dry gin. A lot of these gins that are being directly compared and recommended seem to not be like each other or fair comparisons at all. Especially comparing a contemporary style to a dry style.
As someone who's been a Gin lover for almost 50 years, it seems to me that you've paired low-end or gins that are too different with high-er-est tier gins in many your comparisons. Gordon's vs Beefeaters is a classic comparison that usually brings up the fact that QE 2 drank Gordon's every day but comparing Plymouth to New Amsterdam or Seagrams vs Ford's is laughable, as N.A. vs Seagrams and vice versa would have been better comparisons and Hendrick's regular Gin with a notable cucumber flavor is Hendrick's flagship product and to compare one of their lesser-known limited runs like Midsummer Solstice to a Gin masterpiece like Monkey 47 Schwarzwald is totally unfair to Hendrick's, as they were clearly set up to fail from the start. Imo, Tanqueray #10 and Monkey 47 Schwarzwald are in a class of their own.

I can't disagree with any of this. I'd probably add that Empress is good for two things: gin and tonics, and the Aviation. It works well with the tonic mater in a G&T and it looks pretty.. It's probably the best for an Aviation because you can keep the amount of Creme de Violette in the drink down (which, lets face it, tastes like soap) but still get the correct color. I tried using it in a martini and was not impressed. Cheers!
I picked up a bottle of the Rhubarb+ginger gin in Heathrow's duty free, hoping for an innovative, can't-get-at-home gin. What I got is the overpowering flavor of wild cherry cough syrup. Glad you gave a shout out to Monkey 47, my favorite.

I’ve been at sea as an officer and Captain for 49 years man and boy. Gin and Tonic has been my staple drink the entire time. Firstly tradition demanded it and then it rapidly became my preference. One thing has never changed really. It has to be Schweppes Tonic Water and quite frankly my go-to gin has always been Plymouth Gin when I can get it or plain-old, dependable Gordon’s if not. There seems to be a degree of snobbery creeping in and a lot of “newcomer” gins in recent years are a) ridiculously expensive and b) frankly not very good. I really don’t like Bombay Sapphire at all.Beefeaters I can take or leave, Tanquaray I use for cocktails and Hendricks is a nice enough drink. I am sitting writing this while enjoying a G&T made using Sam’s Club gin which they sell in massive bottles at very reasonable prices! Not the best but very drinkable and better than most of the recent expensive offerings in their fancy bottles and boxes….

I am sorry, but I beg to differ in both your apparent biases and conclusions. 1st: I have gin library and have most of these gins in it. Examples of each approach, IMHO - e.g., Modern (London & Western, Scottish, Irish, etc.), London Dry, Japanese, colored Gins (indigo, pink, empress, etc.), new and old deliberately flavorful ones (Genever, Old Tom, Terroir, Honey, Sloe, Botanicals, Navy, Jalapeño, lemon, saffron), etc. - should be sampled by its classification AND in keeping with its intended use-case and maybe then compared to its brethren. For example, comparing the vast differences between Roku and Ki No Bi Japanese gins would be more edifying than comparing Roku to Aviation. 2nd: your other bias is your personal taste being offered as a final conclusion/judgment (“you should not buy” and “avoid” and even “so you don’t have to [buy]”), not as an opinion which many would disagree with you on. I was underwhelmed by your article.

I bought a bottle of Nolet gin. I hated it; the floral taste/smell was overwhelming. Threw it in the garbage. I like Beefeater but I recently tasted a Texas based gin called Roxor. It was very good. I bought a bottle recently so I will give it a longer test.

Nice video! I do think some of the comparisons were a little mis-matched. New Amsterdam could better be compared to other cheaper gins like Seagrams, ie..... cheap vs cheap. Glad to see Bluecoat gin in the comparisons. I think Bluecoat is much better then NoLets. Other gins I would like to have seen are some of the amazing Icelandinc gins, Gunpowder gin from Ireland, and Cidatelle gin. Last note.... anyone who appreciates gin should take the Beefeater Gin Distillery tour in London.

Gin is a diversion from my love of whiskey. I've been a Beefeaters fan for my entire adult life. I normally do Gimlets but have since moved to Rickeys. At the ripe old age of 73, I'm getting itchy to try other gins. My next stop is The Botanist. This video gave me new options to try.

You are not making a mistake with The Botanist. Beautiful, balanced gin.
After 40 years of drinking various gins I’ve settled on five that now always sit in my cabinet. Plymouth and Roku are easy, quality, subtle gins while Monkey 47, Gunpowder and Tarquin’s blue bottle are more characterful and impactful without being clumsy. I’ve drank many others that have been very pleasant but those five are permanent fixtures in my gin department.

If I have one complaint on your comparison videos (not just this one, but your whisk(e)y ones as well) is that your comparisons are rarely price comparible. I don't think most of us are going to be considering a bottom shelf bottle with a mid priced bottle. Yes, there are higher priced bottles that are not worth the money, but those should be compared to other bottles in the same price category for a valid comparison. For example, in this video, a comparison between Bombay Sapphire and regular Tangueray might have been more appropriate. Or Tangueray 10 vs. one of Bombay's other options.

Okay, that criticism was harsh, I apologize. But I noticed the disparity first and especially when comparing the $12 bottle of New Amsterdam (classified as a London Dry) with the $30 Plymouth (a Plymouth style gin). So not only a price tier difference, you conspired apples to oranges -- or shall I say junipers to... other botanical in gin.
That said, love the videos! I'm not quite an intermediate level cocktail enthusiast, but I agree that there were some odd "comparisons."

As an avid gin drinker for decades, I enjoyed your presentation. I think, however, that you may have transposed the date of the release of Ford's gin. It was 2012, not 2021. Also, your choice of reviewing Hendricks Midsummer was confusing as it was a limited release and no longer available. I did enjoy learning about the historical background of the gins and the ingredients comparisons. I was surprised to hear how recent some of these were developed. Thanks.

I find regular Bombay less rough than Sapphire. I like New Amsterdam in the lower price range. I think Seagrams is the best of the Cheapies smoother than you would think. If I’m drinking some higher price stuff I like Hendricks:) Thanks for comparisons but I find Tanqueray a little harsh. I generally drink Gin neat with Angostura or Peychaud’s bitters. It’s pretty much whiskey season now:)

I’m 75 and my wife and I have enjoyed gin and tonic in the summertime for probably fifty years. We insist on making it out of Beefeater gin and Schweppes tonic water. In our opinion no other ingredient combination compares, and isn’t a real G & T.

I'm a Beefeater, Tanqueray 10 guy normally when in the mood for a Martini. Really enjoyed the comparisons. There were a few I've never tried and so have no opinion, but agree with your evaluation of everything I have tried.
I noticed the Citadelle behind you. Would be interesting to add that and regular Tanqueray and Hendrick's to the evaluation process. Also Dalton, St. George, The Botanist, North Shore Distillery No. 6 and No. 11, Dingle, probably others that don't immediately come to mind. Some of these may not be widely available so not worth reviewing. I'd skip all the flavored gins, too, unless you want to do a video on how those might be used in cocktails. Ideas for Part 2!

Tanqueray No. 10 for special occasions & Tanqueray normal London Dry Gin as my evening aperitif. But don’t add ice as it waters it down, just keep the Gin, Tonic water & limes in the fridge & put the glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before pouring.

My favourite London Dry style gin is Brokers. It has the complexities of Bombay Sapphire with the intensity of Tanqueray. Other gins worth a taste are Ungava Gin, made with botanicals fround growing on the tundra near Ungava Bay in Quebec and Gin Mare from Spain with it's own unique style.

Seagram’s Extra Dry Gin is my go to for martinis, because of the dryness. I use very little Vermouth, and Olives stuffed with Jalapeños. It’s lip smackingly good. I don’t like “floofy” gins except for other cocktails like gin and tonic.

Plymouth has been my regular gin for over 25 years now, appealing to me both for its excellent taste and its history, but recently I've been delighted to discover another historic gin that has been reintroduced: Booth's Finest. This is one of the oldest gins in existence and, from being one of the most widely available brands, had been neglected by Diageo and allowed to go out of production. Acquired by Sazerac a few years ago, it is now available again, though not widely advertised for some reason. Matured in sherry casks, it has a yellow colour and mellow taste. So I now enjoy both Plymouth and Booth's. Booth's also had another variety called "High and Dry", advertised as the driest gin in the world. I wonder if Sazerac intend to reintroduce it?

I happen to have found my drink other than Rye with Ginger Beer and that's the Negroni, So gin was now on the 2 bottle list of mine, We have a local gin in Oregon called Wild Roots, I think it's great but hell after watching this I will take your word for quality . I do like the Beefeater. The orange & bergamont gin from Wild Roots is recommended. Great vid.

Not a big gin drinker anymore since I switched to Scotch-far less damaging to the liver. I highly recommend Burnets for its fine taste,low proof, and price. 94 proof is way too much!

The best gin I have ever seen is Monkey 47. I would never use it in a cocktail. Second place for me goes to GB gin from Great Britain. Made by someone who discovered they needed potatoes and so started farming. I thought Tanqueray had no citrus component. If we are drinking it, I give it a splash of orange bitters. Must be just me. I much prefer Bombay to Bombay Sapphire. Also the price is cheaper and I suppose that is because all the ad money is spent on the Sapphire. I have no complaints with Beefeater or Gordon's. Gordon's is just for cocktails, and this is just my opinion.

As a Yank who lived and worked on a British ship for four years I learned to appreciate gin. My go to cocktail is a gin and tonic and rarely drink martinis. Your analysis is very good and I do not dispute what you have said except to say I have a very individualized taste and I am frankly in favor of citrus forward gins. Despite your less than favorable reviews of Tanqueray Rangpur and Bluecoat I unapologetically declare these two as my favorites ... for mixing. In my view if you are mixing gin in a cocktail it does not have to be complex or subtle, although drinking neat is another matter. It is a matter of taste after all. By the way, being a Philadelphian does not prejudice me in favor of Bluecoat, but it does Philadelphia proud that such a fine product is produced in the City Of Brotherly Love.

A fantastic local gin is Aurora Gin by Anchorage Distillery and comes in at 100 proof. New American style but still not shy with the juniper

It is a great gin in my book, interesting due to its heat from the sansho peppers and the citrus from the yuzu and kabosu botanicals. @@schoolofwineandspirits I didn't realize it has sansho peppers, but I definitely caught the yuzu. It's my favorite gin. It stands completely on its own (I like it on the rocks with a splash of water), and it seems too delicate to mix or even garnish. Dr. Bombay come right away! I've gotten used to the stronger sapphire version. It's really a matter of taste I guess. I don't care for the standard Tanqueray. To me it has an off taste and I feel I have come a long way from the Seagrams and the bubbly glass bottle. Ever since I discovered blue cheese stuffed olives I can't make a martini without a few. Yum.

An excellent comparison of various gin pairings. However I think you missed an obvious pairing. Hendricks (regular) vs another cucumber gin. A lot of people like the smooth flavor of Hendricks and we have some other clone cucumber gins (Esme). That would have been a good pairing to evaluate.

I tried Aviation gin, and... it just doesn't carry the kind of oomph that I like in my gins, sadly. I love you, Ryan, but it is a no for me. I actually got to try some local gins when I was in Cornwall, back in 2023, which were quite lovely. They were from the Rock distillery, and one was an orange peel gin, and the other was their "cherry kiss." They were both quite lovely!

Weird comparing flavored gins to non-flavored gins. I don’t think anyone is buying a flavored gin and looking to use it like a dry gin. A lot of these gins that are being directly compared and recommended seem to not be like each other or fair comparisons at all. Especially comparing a contemporary style to a dry style.

As someone who's been a Gin lover for almost 50 years, it seems to me that you've paired low-end or gins that are too different with high-er-est tier gins in many your comparisons. Gordon's vs Beefeaters is a classic comparison that usually brings up the fact that QE 2 drank Gordon's every day but comparing Plymouth to New Amsterdam or Seagrams vs Ford's is laughable, as N.A. vs Seagrams and vice versa would have been better comparisons and Hendrick's regular Gin with a notable cucumber flavor is Hendrick's flagship product and to compare one of their lesser-known limited runs like Midsummer Solstice to a Gin masterpiece like Monkey 47 Schwarzwald is totally unfair to Hendrick's, as they were clearly set up to fail from the start. Imo, Tanqueray #10 and Monkey 47 Schwarzwald are in a class of their own.

I can't disagree with any of this. I'd probably add that Empress is good for two things: gin and tonics, and the Aviation. It works well with the tonic mater in a G&T and it looks pretty.. It's probably the best for an Aviation because you can keep the amount of Creme de Violette in the drink down (which, lets face it, tastes like soap) but still get the correct color. I tried using it in a martini and was not impressed. Cheers!

I was surprised by your review of Aviation- i bought a bottle on sale to try as it has a premium price - i found the anise seed flavour was dominant and not at all welcome in a martini. Anise flavor was not mentioned in your review- (I agree not to buy it)

Export in UK is their 47% version. In UK their standard Gin is now 37.5%, this reduces the duty and VAT. This makes most standard UK gins rubbish!

I’ve been at sea as an officer and Captain for 49 years man and boy. Gin and Tonic has been my staple drink the entire time. Firstly tradition demanded it and then it rapidly became my preference. One thing has never changed really. It has to be Schweppes Tonic Water and quite frankly my go-to gin has always been Plymouth Gin when I can get it or plain-old, dependable Gordon’s if not. There seems to be a degree of snobbery creeping in and a lot of “newcomer” gins in recent years are a) ridiculously expensive and b) frankly not very good. I really don’t like Bombay Sapphire at all.Beefeaters I can take or leave, Tanquaray I use for cocktails and Hendricks is a nice enough drink. I am sitting writing this while enjoying a G&T made using Sam’s Club gin which they sell in massive bottles at very reasonable prices! Not the best but very drinkable and better than most of the recent expensive offerings in their fancy bottles and boxes….

Empress is a good starter gin with a nice gimmick.
I am sorry, but I beg to differ in both your apparent biases and conclusions.
1st: I have gin library and have most of these gins in it. Examples of each approach, IMHO - e.g., Modern (London & Western, Scottish, Irish, etc.), London Dry, Japanese, colored Gins (indigo, pink, empress, etc.), new and old deliberately flavorful ones (Genever, Old Tom, Terroir, Honey, Sloe, Botanicals, Navy, Jalapeño, lemon, saffron), etc. - should be sampled by its classification AND in keeping with its intended use-case and maybe then compared to its brethren. For example, comparing the vast differences between Roku and Ki No Bi Japanese gins would be more edifying than comparing Roku to Aviation.
2nd: your other bias is your personal taste being offered as a final conclusion/judgment (“you should not buy” and “avoid” and even “so you don’t have to [buy]”), not as an opinion which many would disagree with you on.

I bought a bottle of Nolet gin. I hated it; the floral taste/smell was overwhelming. Threw it in the garbage. I like Beefeater but I recently tasted a Texas based gin called Roxor. It was very good. I bought a bottle recently so I will give it a longer test.
Many small distilleries are making spectacular stuff. Everyone's taste is different. I have a bottle of Finn's Gin from a small Chicago distillery that is incredible. Nice video! I do think some of the comparisons were a little mis-matched. New Amsterdam could better be compared to other cheaper gins like Seagrams, ie..... cheap vs cheap. Glad to see Bluecoat gin in the comparisons. I think Bluecoat is much better then NoLets. Other gins I would like to have seen are some of the amazing Icelandinc gins, Gunpowder gin from Ireland, and Cidatelle gin. Last note.... anyone who appreciates gin should take the Beefeater Gin Distillery tour in London.
