Add the dude from Space Harrier for lulz. I personally think aside from the lack of props, I just find the smoothness of the roads a little jarring in comparison to the old school sprites. Either way appreciate the love for Outrun, keep at it!
Yeah, back in the days the scaling of the sprites wasn't that smooth. They also used LOD's which also makes it a bit more choppy. I could also use LOD's, but that's a lot of work. I'll be happy if I have more props 😂
Why was almost every turn leading into the next lap so drawn out and sharp? XD Also, I'll be honest: This was quite a treat to watch. Seeing familiar sprites from old sega racing games made me feel nostalgic.
Good question! It's a flaw in the system in fact. First of all: most of the stages were randomly generated and then tweaked by me. The corners aren't really corners, but the road gets scewed in a way that it looks like a corner. Actually you're always going straight ahead. Variables are used to remember where you're supposed to go, where the road has to be scewed to. When the road always gets scewed to the left or right, certain values become too big and lose precision. To counter that, there has to be an equal amount of turns to the other side. So after every stage there is one corner that is supposed to do that, to reset those values. That's why it is so sharp/long. In newer stages I try to balance the amount of left/right turns so the last one doesn't have to be that big.
I love this remake! Thank you to make it happen! By the way you can also (if you want and if you need improvement) add some sprites from the Amiga game "Lotus Esprit Engine 2"?
Thank you for your kind words! Putting those cars in would be awesome idea, except that they would probably stand out a bit because of their drawing style. If someone could give them a bit more shades, I would be happy to put them in!
darn, i'd love to see other cars from other racing games of that era (e.g. Cisco Heat, Continental Circus, WEC Le Mans 24, Chase H.Q.) in that game you're workin' on!
@@YukesVonFaust No, but I'm considering a forum. A place where you can make suggestions, report bugs, and where I can offer a spreadsheet so you can create your own cars.
is there a way to make this game with tons of sprites? i know its supposed mimic classic outrun, but im kinda loving the idea of an outrun with no limits D: so many waves! so many trees!
You can do that in the 2nd race. The last stage is pretty much the same as the 3rd stage of the Europe track, with the exception of the billboards and you have 3 lanes instead of 2.
looks awesome, at the top of my favorite racing games are outrun and super-hang-on....so you can't select bike yet in that 0.3 version of your download? idea is awesome, keep up the good work
Thanks! You can unlock the bike after you've unlocked the Countach. Complete the 5 races with one of the first 2 cars, do it again with the Countach and you can drive the bike. 😉
@@Sk1ds87 aren't you just screen recording the game in mame and then frame by frame creating sprites? I used to rip from video for mugen mortal kombat(real mk11 literally ripped off my mugen robocop) but I don't got time anymore focusing on my rock band RadioSpirit. currently working on 3rd album.
@@Jolly-Green-Steve Yes, but I try to use this approach as less as possible. I have a little program that renders most of the sprites in an empty window, but without colour. I have palettes of Super Hang-On and Outrun, but not Turbo Outrun, so those sprites need to coloured manually. Still, it's easier than ripping the sprites from an emulator, unless they are on a empty background. Too bad Racing Hero probably doesn't work with that program.
@@Sk1ds87 Super Hang-On has a cool mode on Mega Drive "Original Mode - which allowed players to recruit sponsors and earn money to buy enhanced components for their bike."
I found you searching to see if anyone had modded the Super-Hang On bike into Outrun, as I thought that would be fun. The rider and motorcycle are huge. You need to scale the bike and rider down some to be closer in scale compared to the cars.
@@Sk1ds87 I found out Sega has 2 more 2D motorcycle games with much more detailed sprites: Racing Hero and GP Rider. GP rider would work better if half the tire was off the bottom of the screen IMO. Not sure if anyone has ripped the sprites though.
As a sportbike rider I approve! But damn, that cliff twisties stage tho!! 😬

Awesome, right?
Put Sonic next since it just has to happen. Use his Sonic CD sprites from the special stages by the way.
