As a diehard fan I’ll be the first to admit nascar isn’t always like that. Understanding the sport also makes things a lot more interesting. A lot of those races where the cars were bunched up was at tracks called superspeedways where the cars don’t have to let off the throttle, causing pack racing because of how the cars are set up. You also have intermediate tracks, short tracks, and road courses.

    • @dylanholman3

"This seems a lot more like people have just suped up cars and just gone for it"
nascar has roots in Illegal moonshiners tuning up their cars to run from the cops. Eventually, one could say inevitably, the question arose of who was faster, and thus nascar was born....
On another note, most of the tracks that nascar races at are basically just giant stadiums, many of them seat over 100,000 fans, complete with US style pre-event tailgating...actually nascar races are tailgating turned up to 11, tens of thousands of fans will come in their RV/motorhome and start that pre-event atmosphere going days before the actual race. I used to live in Dover, Delaware, which hosted a nascar race twice a year at that time, and during race weekend the population of the city would effectively quadrouple.

7:50 At the superspeedways, the track is so wide, so big, and the turns so steep that you don't need to ever touch the brakes. To keep the speeds safe for the drivers and spectators, NASCAR is forced to artificially hamper speeds. So they place restrictors that limit the amount of fuel and air mixture. As a result drivers are required to use aerodynamics to get a speed advantage. A car pushes the air aside and every car in the row behind pushes the car in front of it. That's why he lost all that ground when he lost the wind tunnel effect ("draft").

They drive so close to each other because it allows them to go faster, if you are alone you will be going slower than the cars drafting/slipstreaming or bumper drafting/tango drafting.
Drafting or slipstreaming usually only benefits the trailing car but bumper drafting/tango drafting benefits both cars, the trailing car gains speed from the leading car thanks to drafting and then leading car gains a little speed from the trailing car from the cars being so close together and changing the pressure at the rear of the car leading car. In NASCAR drivers will push each other taking full benefit of this effect allow them to gain 5mph to 15mph over the rest of the drivers. They will do this until the finish line is in sight and then its anyones race.

I've not been to a NASCAR race in nearly 20 years. But at least back then, you were not only allowed to drink beer, you were allowed to bring your own beer in. So instead of paying $8 for a watered down bud light like at most American pro sporting events, you could buy your 30 pack of Busch Light and a cheap cooler and ice for like $20 at like a local gas station or supermarket and bring 30 beers into the race with you.

Pre-covid people could spend all week at the track. At tracks where it’s big enough people are allowed in the infield with campers and spend all week at nascar events watching practice, qualifying and racing for all 4 tiers of the series. It’s truly one of the best times you can have if you know people to go with. There’s usually movies, games, concerts, etc at the track all week. Not sure it’s gonna as accessible after covid though.

NASCAR is usually a full weekend. You have qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday. You have people in the infield (very center of track) that bring campers and rvs and camp out and party all day while watching the race. You'll see people with old school buses converted to campers, standing on top of the bus watching the race.

"This seems a lot more like people have just souped up cars and just going for it"
Well, in the beginning, it WAS just a bunch of guys in souped up cars just going for it. During prohibition, people would distill their own whiskey and upgrade their cars to outrun the police when they would transport it to the buyer. Frequently, they would paint the cars black and remove the headlights and taillights so they were harder to see in the dark, driving by the light of the moon, thus the name "Moonshiners". In some cases, sneaky shiners would run the engines of their car on the moonshine they were transporting.
After prohibition ended these cars were still around, so the owners started racing each other. To this day, most high performance racing cars use some blend of ethanol in their fuel.

I don't know if you know much about the "science" (for lack of better term of NASCAR), but for some of these such as the first one, they're impressive because you run much faster in the big stacks with people right on your bumper, which is called bump drafting. When you are running alone with nobody behind you it is hard to pass someone in a stack, and its even less likely you can keep running side by side alone. Eventually, you should fall back a bunch of positions as the whole stack passes you based on momentum.

Nascar racing "if ain't rubbin', you ain't racing". Drafting is speed. The cars inline will face less resistance and have power to spare to slingshot around the car in front.
Idea: racing and moonshine (whiskey) running. Nascar was born out of running moonshine. As funny as it sounds, Cars 3 highlights this history with Junior Johnson as 1 of "founding " drivers.

It is intense in the stands- you do not realize how fast they are going until you see them in person. I am older and the first race I went to only had American made race cars and I went to the race in my Toyota not knowing it would be a problem. I parked my car and got out and everybody around me started saying I could not park my rice burner in their parking lot. I looked around the parking lot and they were only American made cars, so I distanced myself from my Toyota and went to the race worried my car might get trashed. Had a great time and came back and my car was fine. Nowadays, they have foreign supported Nascars, come along way.

The problem is he couldn't see either. He wrecked his car in front of his future wife's home. As he climbed out; the girl, the mother, and the father came outside just in time to see the cops tackle and arrest him.

Take a steel-tube beast of a chassis with a mockup body on it loosely based on a street car... an assembly that's larger and weighs more than what used to be a normal road car in the UK.
Now, imagine yourself in your car going 60mph and slamming on the brakes to a stop. Bled off 60mph, right?
Imagine driving so fast that you can brake 60mph and still be going 150mph. Oh, and you've literally had someone either ahead or behind you a hands-width off your bumper for the last 3 hours... and it's 55C with you completely encapsulated in multiple layers of nomex cloth and a helmet. If you pass, or allow someone to pass you, in just the wrong section of track at the wrong time, the *air* from the other car can either pull or push you into a spin. If you stay in strict line too long, your engine could overheat and rapidly disassemble itself since it's turning 8500 to 9000 RPM, fairly fast for a pushrod 5.8L V8... and the pressurized cooling system allows it to run 135 to 150C to begin with.
No ABS. No traction control. No stability control. No active aero. Fuel injection was only introduced a few years ago. Your transmission is an H pattern 4 speed directly descended from a 1960's sedan. Oh, and you can't turn your head... there's a spot mirror on the side about the size of a fist and a strip rear view mirror and they're both nearly worthless, you rely on a guy standing on a platform to tell you what's around you. And one last bit, there's power steering but it's geared like a regular car, so you make damn sure you get your hands clear when you're about to hit something or the steering wheel will pretty easily whip-spin around and break your thumbs as impact forcibly moves the front wheels.

NASCAR is such a good sport, NASCAR was born with the prohibition era, so they were smugglers, yet now we have all these big tracks and close finishes. NASCAR is so hard because you are never straight. 10:30, the 31 had to get passed the 42 to make the championship race with 3 other drivers, he wouldn’t have made it without wrecking him, but as we fans say, rubbing is racing.

they keep the speed down some, they make them put restrictor plates in the carburation system, otherwise they could go much faster, not a Nascar guy, but I think the have a certain ci displacement cap too .Every car is inspected for compliance to all the rules before you get into the pit area.
