  • Captain Dicks Nelms, 99, piloted a B-17 in the European Theater during World War II. He recounts his 35 combat missions over nazi airspace "to make a serious dent in Hitler's war machine."
This video was filmed December 22, 2022. Captain Nelms still presents occasionally at the Seattle Museum of Flight. You can check the monthly presentation list at the link below, if you're interested in hearing Capt Nelms presentation in person:

This is information that needs to live on throughout human history. I appreciate you stretching the boundaries of your channel to include things like this. It give me more context to who you are as a person, which I had already suspected to be a more than respectable individual. Thank you

Thank you so much Tyler! I feel the same way. I'm a huge fan of the Greatest Generation, and deeply respect the sacrifices they made in WWII. Getting to meet Capt Nelms in 2019 and again in 2022 was an honor I did not think I would get to have.

Fellow PNW fisherman and vet here. I absolutely enjoy listening to other veteran's experiences from earlier wars. It helps to put a real hero's face and perspective on what, in many people's minds, was just another airman or soldier that fought in a war of the past. I was relaxing a number of years ago at the Hale Koa's Barefoot Bar on Oahu one evening. I very distinguished gentleman showed up and, based on his clothing with military decor, was obviously a vet of WWII. I got to drink a couple beers with what turned out to be LTC Alexander Jefferson of the Red Tails! He was full of energy and very willing to share stories. Sad to say, but he past away earlier this year. Glad I had the opportunity to meet him.

I feel lucky to have spent my youth meeting and talking to many vets. Most gone now, but not forgotten.

Thanks Mike! I feel the same way. The Greatest Generation was the elders when I grew up. We will not see their like again...

This was such an incredibly important thing to record, I'm glad to see that the room was packed, it shows that there's still a lot of people out there that appreciate the service of men like Mr. Nelms . 25 combat missions was more than enough, but he went an extra 10, while he might be modest in his own mind, he is an incredible person to the rest of us!

I completely agree Brian and/or Jon. He thinks of himself as a regular guy. I can't bring myself to call him only by his first name, although that's what he prefers. At the very least "Captain Dick Nelms." What an incredible treasure that he's still giving presentations. I filmed two outros. The first one I start balling, because he's such a great man. The Greatest Generation was really that. I'm so glad I got to take my son to meet him in 2019. But of course am saddened that as time marches on society will no longer get to experience The Greatest Generation's wisdom first hand.

I was fortunate enough to have dinner with Mr. Nelms tonight. He is a close friend of my boss who is a pilot himself. I have to say it was one of the coolest experiences of my life.

We love the Museum of Flight. So much untold history of the world. We are members and think it will take us many years to really take the proper time to explore. We are just now near the end of WWII and will begin WW1 next.

That's wonderful! I also need to learn a lot more about WWI. It's extremely interesting and engaging when I have started to learn. But I suppose it's the connection to having known many WWII veterans that keeps drawing me back to it. At any rate, thank goodness for the Museum of Flight! It really is a treasure.

@@WAFishQuest yes, it is. My father fought in WWII and met my mother there, so this museum has taught me so much about my past. Such a hidden gem in Washington. Would love to see you do a video on it. I think so many have no idea that it exists. Best museum, West of the Smithsonian.

The audio is a little rough the first 4 minutes, while people are still settling in. It gets better after that! The gentleman who was taking over Captain Nelms in the beginning, was a Vietnam veteran in the back who is extremely hard of hearing. He just didn't know the presentation had started. No disrespect was intended. : )
