Thanks! It's expensive to head out to the island! I booked mine ahead of time, for a super early ferry, and for the last ferry on a Sunday night, but definitely worth it.
Here is hoping that one day you can give us the full tour of the Island Highway, from Mile Zero in Victoria all the way to the Bear Cove Ferry Terminal near Port Hardy, even if you need to do it in smaller segments.
We did the old (more coastal) route from Nanaimo to Campbell River and then on to Port Hardy last year (visiting from australia) and back again - but using the newer (east island highway?) Highway for parts of the way back. Filming either would be great to see.
@@Kenny1977-b1j I live on Vancouver Island myself. However, I will not pay more than $30 to board a BC Ferries sailing, which pretty much precludes me from driving off of the Island.
I will be going back next spring (summer fares were too much this year for another quick day trip) to film between Nanaimo and hopefully Port Hardy. I drove up to Nanaimo on this trip in May 2024 (footage coming soon) but didn’t have enough time to drive up to Campbell River. Hoping to get Hwy 19 northbound and the old Island Highway on the return trip. But regardless, I’ll at least drive up to Campbell River.
@@denelson83 can understand that the ferry is more of an essential service, not a holiday expense, to islanders. we live in Perth, Western Australia, no car ferries needed anywhere near us. So our trip last year (Tsawassen to Nanaimo, back a week later) was mostly all new to us - we found it very efficient for ticketing and loading, no traffic queues on approach roads, and (from memory, approx…) C$90 each way seemed very fair for 2 adults, a hire car, on a 2 hour trip. Onboard cafe couldve done with more staff, but food was fine. And, probably as was quiet October period and we were on the 8pm boat, plenty of room we have used UK / France ferries in the distant past… traffic queues, painful ticketing and loading, very busy on board. A quick Google of todays prices, Dover to Calais (90 min, so shorter than Tsawassen- Nanaimo) for 2 people plus car is approx (equiv of…) C$280 return…so 50% more $ than a return fare on a longer trip, with better service, on BC Ferries. I sensed from half-watching you local TV news stories that BC Ferries isn’t great, but it’s isn’t all bad…!
Hi xlbolt! This vid is like 2020 season, eh? I've been watching this from 2020/21 but as a guest account. It just keeps on getting better Congrats for 2k! And I subbed before 1k and 500, this is evp other account.
Thanks! I originally filmed the section first in 2020, but I finally went back to the island and got some videos filmed earlier this May, including this video which I got on the way back to Vancouver
Smooth Operator? I love that smooth jazz song and I did dance that song in cha cha in my cha cha class in college. That song was very popular in both 1984 and 1985 and was in the Top 40 on the Hot 100 during the spring of 1985 as it reached #5 on the chart and also #5 in Canada.
5:14 this section right here is finally getting a proper overpass the old exit that will be removed possibly spring of 2025 is a poorly designed exit as you have to take a left turn for the exit while there’s rapid traffic happening all at once making things harder for people going through that exit (there’s not even a stoplight right there) for some reason going southbound highway 17 it doesn’t have an exit for keating road
I'm guessing because more traffic comes from hotels in Victoria to Butchart Gardens than from immediately off the ferry, or the MoTI wanted to save money, or both. Or maybe they don't have enough space or land rights for a full trumpet interchange?
Driven on this highway countless times throughout my life. Great timelapse; I loved the info and music choice.
The good ol' last ferry back to the mainland.
Great video once again. I've never been on those big ferries. I was going to go to the Island this summer, but couldn't get one. Thanks for posting!

8:46 Tsawwassen is home to North America’s largest ferry terminal? Didn’t know that!
Great Video!

I know the locals (islanders) have mixed feelings about BC Ferries but we found them very efficient and fairly priced.
