i vaguely remember that calls from canada to china was something like 25 cents to two dollars per minute. it should be cheaper to call to japan, and cost in 1997 (episode date) can't be that much more expensive vs. 2000 since even in 2005 the cost stayed the same. in other words, it was probably about the librarian's pay for the whole day at most.

In retrospect, they should’ve had Akira say that they use Mr. Sparkle in his restaurant’s kitchen. Somebody in Springfield must use it, otherwise the empty wouldn’t have been in the city’s dump, and they missed a perfect opportunity for a joke. He could have asked Homer if he’d been rooting through their trash, and Homer could’ve said something like “Uh..not this week”, and then run out the door. XD

I would have loved to have seen an episode where Homer contacts the makers of Mr Sparkle and asks to be a live action spokesman for them. I've thought that there are probably 3 long shelves stacked under that long front desk (see at 2:21, it's a long desk) which the shelves are all filled with phone books from cities all over the world. Why would an American town's library only have one foriegn phone book, and it being Hokkaido. If they were to have just one, you'd think it'd more likely be Mexico. And if they did have one from Japan, you'd think it'd more likely be Tokyo or Osaka
I had a few hours to kill recently, while at the Incheon Airport in Seoul Korea. I saw some Korean TV commercials for home products, such as kitchen cleansers and the like. I understand now where the inspiration for 'Mr Sparkle' came from !
Advertising at that time was wierd. There was a car advert in the UK that was just giant vases and purple sheets, it didn't say anything about the car.
