I agree fully . I havent been to hirsch yet but I have herd their very good at finding hard to find parts and great service , Ive allways had good luck with furgusons in costa mesa. They have a clean parking lot so you dont get any suprises in your tires and the employes treat you like family . Its like a home with plumbing supplys.
Joe, Plumbers earn the price they charge, Plumbing can be extremely tough and even harmful to the body of the person attempting the work. Sorry the DIY was tough. Thanks for posting the comment so others will see that it is not as easy as it seems. Try using a push fit fitting as a temp fix.
I preffer american made tools too . I like that tool you were using on the shut off volve . Your able to get a firm grip on with out it slipping. I have an old pipe wrinch that is made of forged steel and a wood grip handle . Its in the shape of a pipe wrench but it works like a cressent wrench. A guy I know plumber Bob said it was at least 80 years old . It still works too .
I am not sure, but Pasco makes one and they are sold at Ferguson Pipe and P&M Supply in Oceanside Ca. Express Pipe and Supply in Escondido if you call and ask for Scott, he told me he would sell those over the Ph. your above description will work, "an angle stop tool" to hold the stop for tightening...
The bonnet nut if one is there is a source of leak. Tighten the nut. Angle stops are a popular source of floods. 10 yrs. life is about it for them. Depends on water pressure, do you have high pressure?
Great Video! I was wondering how tight should I crack the angle stop? I replaced and installed one where once it was tight, I did an extra quarter turn and that was tight enough. Then I did another one the same way, and it was slighting leaking. I then cracked it another quarter turn and it leaked even more, then I did 2 or 3 more quarter turns until I finally got it to stop. Is that common? Can you crack it too much? I was using a heavy duty 12" wrench and I really torqued it.
Old tools can be nice if the edges are not dull or something. Old pipe wrenches can have smoothed of jaws, just file them sharp with a triangle file and Wa-La..
@RealPlumberz If you use a Ferrell retriever you wont hurt the pipe and you will be following the rules....those brass rings are not meant to be reused. Leaks have occurred from re use. I teach the professional methods.
Too much torque will distort the copper, I have many yrs. experience, I just know, then if I am wrong, I go another turn. The copper tube being sealed is needed to be original shape and not "hour glassed" by last compression. If it is you need to cut off 3/8" and have a fresh pipe area to seal to.
Hello, if someone said they replaced 2 vanity angle stops, does that mean they replaced the shut-off valves for hot and cold water? I tried to ask /verify with the contractor, but haven't heard from him yet. Hope you can tell me the answer. Thanks!
Sushi Sashimi it is safe to assume that is what they meant. As a plumber for Roto rooter here I, Sacramento, it is common that we replace both angle valves.
I was all ready to do this, and I find that my existing angle stops don't have anything to undo on the back. It appears that they're all soldered to the water lines coming out of the wall. Is this the "end of the line" for a beginner? I thought about cutting them off, and filing them to install a new one that uses a compression style connection, but in some cases it's so close to the wall, I don't know how the plumber kept from burning the house down when installing them.
Where can I purchase that angle valve tool you used? I looked around the web and found nothing. I went to your blog site and the email address posted does not work. Thanks!
OK you said it, but it matters not where one gets the parts or tools to achieve what we offer here. I prefer US made or at min. not made in China parts & tools. We as Americans have the responsibility to that action.
Today i attempted to fix a leaking valve under the toilet, and its a bitch to take off and even harder to put back on...I still havent put it all together cus there is not enough space to work. The compression ring and the nut on to tighten the valve are impossible to tighten... anyone know a number for a 24hr plumber? I need my water back on ASAP
I never buy anything from express pipe & supplys in costa mesa . Thier crooked . The place is a mess inside and out , Back in the past it was a clean place to shop , But now its a hole in the wall in an ally . As a home owner and biz owner and neibor ,, I have the right to say it ,
Win Supply in Escondido will sell you one. 760-755-6136. Ask for Jim or Scotty. Home Depot stocks them here in San Diego too. On shelf with plumbing tools
This was an excellent video. Everything viewers need to know and nothing they don't!

Angle on, thanks, now we are both smarter. Once you use one you will never want to be with out it.
@juicysquidlad

Great Thanks alot!,,,, BTW, I had a real hard time with a securing a new angle stop.. I tightened it too much at punctured the copper pipe!...
Great Video!

Hirsch Pipe and supply or Ferguson do well as does any hardware store with better angle stops 1/4 turn are best. Brass craft is good stuff..
What is the name of the tool you threaded onto the 3/8 part of the stop, so you could tighten the 5/8 compression nut? Where can I buy one?

How much copper is out side the wall between the stop and wall?

What do you mean you punctured the copper pipe? The nut on an angle stop can be tightened all the way and not puncture anything...???
What is the street pressure?, do you have a thermal Expansion tank?
Where did you get the device that screws in the angle stop and hold it in place?
Where can I purchase that angle valve tool you used? I looked around the web and found nothing. I went to your blog site and the email address posted does not work. Thanks!

About one inch in the tightest case.
I found the real Hank Hill c:
Cut off the valve close to the valve and compress on a new one.
