There is another problem with this video. This bear family is becoming way too comfortable living in close proximity to humans. That is how habituated bears happen. One warning shot with a rifle would have been a good idea. If the bears don't leave after that put one down, preferably a weaker cub who mother knows likely wouldn't have lasted long anyway. Perhaps, and hopefully, the bears would not any longer be part of your faux nature sanctuary but the remaining lot would have a much better chance of survival.

we assume it's a he. it's probably a mother bear. the young one's don't hide in a hole they climb up a tree while the mother bear fights whatever, in a hole a grizzly will get them or a fox or whatever.

I hate to break it to the wife, but that's what bears do. Whether or not the animal the bear is chasing is full grown or still a baby, the bear will still try to get it no matter what, especially if the bear has cubs.

I understand why being out of the food chain places us at a greater distance from animals. Harder to understand is the tendency for humans to imbue wild animals with human characteristics. The wife’s reaction is the same as most people if they saw this in person. People have been separated from nature for the most part. When you are around and see the interactions of wildlife often your idea of the world is just a tad different. Everything must survive and even creatures we think only eat vegetation will also eat other animals, such as deer eating baby birds.

What does she think, the bear can just go to the store for its meat instead? Nature is hard to watch, and that can be difficult to accept when you live so close to it. But interfering with a predator on the hunt is not only foolish, but also not as compassionate as you think. The bear was hunting for its cubs. And if you want deer to survive, then you have to let natural selection happen so the deer with the best survival instincts survive and breed.
