T49 Review/Guide, 1st-Shot Opportunities for Max Derpage

- I review the T49, a tier 8 American light tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with a replay of a tier 10 Lakeville battle.
Stat line: Ace Tanker, 2.9 damage, 4.1k spotted damage
The T49 is a tank many players struggle with due to its very poor gun handling and low accuracy with the 152mm "derp" gun. That said, T49 drivers can leverage the tank's speed and vision control to create first-shot opportunities to mitigate the long aim time.
Strengths and Weaknesses
+ Superb max gun depression (-10)
+ HE rounds are devastating against weakly-armored targets and can damage even strongly armored targets
+ HE rounds often inflict crew and module damage
+ Solid mobility / agility
- Very poor accuracy (0.60)
- Glacial aim time (3.6s)
- Long reload (~19-20s)
- Large profile relative to its peers
Recommended Equipment
1. VStab
2. Rammer
3. Optics
Vents is a viable option over Optics if you stack crew bonuses (BIA, Vents, Food). I haven't tried Vents yet as my crew isn't ready for BIA.
I don't recommend GLD as the gun handling is still poor even with it, and you'd have to give up Rammer or Optics. The tradeoff simply isn't worth it.
This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

Great guides, Taugrim. Humility is evident in your instruction style. Many thanks!
"Our idiots in valley..." Awesome. I'll never understand why muppets keep rolling into the Valley of Uselessness on this map - such a waste of time.
It's amusing to me you're the only person who commented on my saying that.
:)
you beat me to it. I came to the comments to laugh at that line. I will say that at least this game was a standard battle. I've lost so many games on encounter when 3-4 heavy tanks with most of their HP are the only surviving teams and lose to one or two low HP light/mediums that cap them out.
@@taugrim And what if only their idiots had gone to valley and yoloed to your back without any resistance? My question is: Is it THAT better to not sacrifice 2-3 tanks to stall enemy in valley (with arty assisstance maybe, because arties will almost certainly be sitting at the ends of the valley)? Really like your WoT videos btw.
@@simonnovak7455 This valley = dumb meta has to die. It is a) as fast or even faster to go between bases through valley compared to city and b) it is easier to defend from attackers coming from city than valley. I used to think valley = stupid but i've seen countless games where our team pushed city, stalled there because of enemy campers, meanwhile enemies were already in our base because they came from valley.
Once upon a time I was stuck on HT-11. Then I drew Lakeville in an M103 without arty. I went valley and blocked 9.5k damage against muppets. Pretty useful for a mission :P
So great you're back!!
looking forward to see a RU251 video!
I just got the derp on my T49.
I’m in love!
Good video!
Yay. Love your videos Taugrim! Keep them coming.
Excellent video! Keep it up taugrim
Nice, always look forward to Taugrims vids
Really like this series my man. As a 50% player I'm learning a lot.
Should do a bunch of episodes featuring the IS 4 line :D
your videos are really some of the best for WoT, you deserve a lot more subscribers ;-). Nice to see you again, and as always nice vid. I like that spotting location too, it's funny how few people know it. Much safer and better than any middle spotting. Just have to be aware that they sidespot you once they reach the church.
> Just have to be aware that they sidespot you once they reach the church
Exactly this.
It's great for the early game, but once they push into the heart of city, it's time to relocate.
Great video! Keep it up :) Sadly I've elited the T49 the day before you post a video on it haha
Great video as always.
Please keep making vids they are great
Never knew of that spotting position so thank you.
Man, I love this tank. :) It's always fun, and from my perspective it's virtually zero stress.
Very good insight of how to play the T49. Enjoyed.
Thanks. I may publish an update for 9.18 since the 90mm is excellent.
I myself am not very good with the T49, but I do watch a twitch streamer named swift motion who is very good with the T49. He has 4500-5000 recent wn8, and in the T49 he has 2000dpg/5000wn8. He uses heat rounds situationally, and I was actually surprised by how often he used heat. I think he carried 6-8 heat rounds.
Something to add, as someone with unicum stats in the T49 as well (3300), it's useful to press R once when going over ridgelines so that you can maintain your dispersion. Moving the reticle slowly from target to target rather than flicking also helps a lot.
That's a good tip.
People have mentioned locking the turret in a thread on Reddit as you said.
Ah, that one is not on my list to buy.
I'm going to purchase the ST-I tomorrow to help with HT missions, and then saving up for the new LTs.
Pepe Jazbec The leopard was also my first tier 10...I have to say I hate it. On paper its stats look great (in regards to the gun) but in practice it just doesn't really perform as well as I feel it should. I managed to pull the stats back to about 3.1k average damage in it, but my winrate is still a lowly 54 in it, the leo does not carry well at all.
Pepe Jazbec Wow. You are starting in a tough line.
that's an interesting trick I will have to try.
T49 is sick... I can play it all day....ELC(pre turret Nerf) and the amx 13 57gf .....love them...
Taugrim great vid but you should try slowly moving the turret because that way it doesnt bloom and overall take less time than move the turret fast and then aim, also i lock the turret with my right key because moving and turning dispersions arent so bad as the turret so i aim my gun with the tank traverse so the gun doesnt bloom and glad to have you back ;)
And some heat ammo can be usefull for flat german side and rear armor cuz its cheap and 152 pen
Are you the same person who posted on the WG official forums?
Thanks for sharing this tip, it's good advice!
Taugrim no i dont post on forums a lot so probably not just speaking from personal exp with 1 k battles and good wn8 and win ratio with t49
Great!! Please make a kv2 unicum guide
T49, even after the changes is really important as a damage dealer to thickly armoured tanks. You can do a consistent 200-300 damage to them while your team struggles to pen them so if you have the choice between a Maus or a Grille, it's better to shoot the Maus with the T49 and let your team shoot the grille.
I've found that this helps win matches a lot more, ignoring soft squishy HP pinata's and actually going for the hard targets.
Hmmm, in that hypothetical case I'd shoot the Grille - you can potentially damage it for 1k damage. But your broader point about the derp gun being able to whittle away super heavies is valid. FWIW, after extensive testing in 9.18+, I've switched to the 90mm gun, it's far more consistent for me.
Yeah it's consistent indeed but the thing is, if I wanted to play a standard 90mm/100mm scout tank there are many that do it better. The whole unique selling point of the T49 is the 152mm and being a good supporting light in terms of damaging heavy armour. No other light can do 300 damage to a Maus or Type5 heavy from the front or 45 degree side angels, the T49 can.
I use it mostly in that role a part from spotting and anti-scout duty at the start, seems to work ok.
decent playstyle, gg
Could definitely use a guide to the obj 416, I love playing the tank but am absolutely attrocious with it, except when I'm not haha
boom shaka laka...this gun hits so freakin hard
With the new equipment "2.0", I really wonder now what is good. On the spoting slot, vents? opticals? vision with -20%camo bush? And then adding power to the engine for better power/weight ratio ? etc ... tough choices influencing directly a new game play
Great video! =8^)
Nice! I want one. Any lower tier vehicles like this?
M4A1 Sherman
Tier V American Medium Tank
One trick is LOCKING the turret, and using your HULL to aim the tank over large angles, because you have LESS dispersion when turning the hull than the turret! Use the turret for minor aim corrections!
holy that is SO smart, thanks
The amount of times I have been snap shot by the T49, whilst moving and I'm moving
Any chance you'll make another video about the new 90mm?
I'll keep that in mind but there are other tanks (e.g. RU lights) that I'd like to cover first.
Really learn a lot from your videos. As well as they are very informative, they are also exciting! Just wondering why you dont use HEAT? I love the HEAT shells myself.
People have suggested that I loadout 3-4 HEAT rounds.
I'm going to try it out.
you need to upload more often
hey taugrim I didn't get this tank yet is it only good for experienced light tank players?
I think the T49 is much more consistent to play with the 90mm gun - it feels like the M41 Bulldog that precedes it but just with better alpha. The derp gun requires much more timing and to some extent, luck.
anyway can I team up with you?
nice video but i want to point out something
1. this tanks stats and guns are being reworked in 9.18
2. you won't NEED to use the 152mm in 9.18 since the 90mm is going to have about 212 apcr pen and 240 dmg with 11 RpM , giving it more DPM and reliable firepower then it currently has
How much average dmg u need for second an third Mark of Excellence?
why no T49/90mm review? ;_;
Waffletractor E-100, according to everyone else:
Pls no hurt me.
Waffletractor E-100, according to T49:
Mmm... tasty.
I have to highlight that this tank has awful turret dispersion with the 152, but the hull and moving dispersion is incredible.
So it might be worth to try and lock the turret as much as possible instead of turning it
Yes, locking the turret is a good idea.
Wait, the t49 won't be losing its derp when it gets switched to T9?
Uriah Siner not anymore. And Sheridan gets a buffed 152 (or the 105).
"Our idiots in Valley defeated their idiots in valley"... i had to clean my screen :)
One think!!! you don't see use in HEAT in this tank? I have like 10 battle in t49 derp gun and some HEAT loaded but i never used too.
> you don't see use in HEAT in this tank?
People have been suggesting that I carry 3-4 HEAT rounds in the T49. I'll try it out.
The thing is, the reload is long, and you have to know ahead of time what you'll be shooting at and where with HEAT in order for it to be effective.
That said, can't hurt to have it in the toolbox as an option.
Daniel Pinheiro firstly, take out the lake and just call it Ville.
The valley is a shite place to play but playing the T30 with 155mm I thought I could just hold back but our mediums were doing ok but not making the push due to a hull down E100 and A skill full pilot.
I loaded HE and got three shots into the E100 and bounced the pilot's shells as a type 4heavy came to support. It made sense to poke out and deep the pilot and take one from the E100. Making the final push possible.
I admit to being a weak player but can often find those wining push moments if the team looks like it has guts.
Ideally a TD, arty and decent medium or low tier heavy can hold the valley but it's boring. Made sense with the T30. Sometimes play the medium gun for a bit more aggressive play using some prem rounds :)
I wrote too much. Sorry
im using 7 he 5 heat and 10 prems cuz i can xd and you know for extra 10 pen
t49 is probably one of my favorite tanks but stil after fucking 1200 no 2nd mark :( it was so hard learning to play this tank i think only after like 400-500 battles i get it how to play it but still im no match for you i really thinking about switching vents to coated optics but im so fucking used to it.
Have you tried playing with the 240 alpha gun? Since 9.18, I've been using that and I find I'm much more consistent using it. The gun handling, pen, and reload are really good.
No and i refuse tbh xd, for me its like playing kv-2 with the 105mm gun, also i have Ru for that kind of stuff...
my ultimate goal is 3 marks with that derp gun on t49 as i did on kv-2 :)
Good luck 3-marking the T49. I'm around 89% and haven't gotten there yet either, but one of these days I'm going to make a push for it too.
Only 21 patrol duty medals. For shame Tau, you are better than that. Help the team bro. (from Diehard)
I'm a baddie
Isn't the t49 losing it's derp gun?
WG decided to retain it. Makes sense given the Sherman tier 10 has the derp.
tanks.gg/v0918ct/tank/t49
Sheridan. But yeah. Although I suspect I'll be using the 105 on the tier 10.
If you can play well the KV-2 and SU-152, then you know how to play the T49. It's not rocket science.
Is it just me, or is the video a bit laggey?
I just watched it on RUclips. There's some loss of quality due to the RUclips encoding, but aside from that it didn't seem laggy. That said, the video was rendered in 30 FPS so maybe you're used to watching 60 FPS videos.
Taugrim *idiots in the valley*
Also Taugrim *plays a light tank in the city*
Also also Tuagrim *doesnt even try to sidescrape in a light tank while playing in the city*
