- I review the T-44, a tier 8 Russian medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT).
Stat line: Ace Tanker, 3.6k damage, 3 kills, 8 spots
I discuss the value of high ground - an age-old principle of warfare that holds true in WoT on some maps - with footage of my T44 in a Mines battle. Holding the high ground provides the following benefits:
a. you have opportunities to take flanking shots on enemies below you, because they are preoccupied with tanks in front of them
b. you can cover different sides of the map with minimal repositioning
c. you control the extent of your tank's exposure
In addition, I talk about the importance of being active - that is, playing smartly aggressive - as opposed to being passive / campy and letting the battle outcome be determined without you.
This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I've learned as I progress towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help other players improve their gameplay.

Speaking of awareness, viewers pointed out for this video that I was getting proxy spotted while on hill by tanks below me. It's something to be aware of.
Sometimes when the other team has hill, I'll proxy spot them from underneath so that our snipers and arty can kill them.
As for the IS player commenting about holding back, you mentioned how the had been shot by invisible players. As a new player, I did not realize the the binocular telescope could be easily transferred between tanks. That will help.
Additionally, watch the mini map and see where your light tanks have been. That will help you know if the area is clear, but it is not 100%.
This series is straight gold for somebody like me who can't seem to do very good. There's so much tips and tricks and great information in this series. don't listen to the guy above telling you to load gold I love that you take the stance of using silver and proving that penetration is doable with regular ammo. Apparently the point is lost on some folks. thank you so much for these guys I can't tell you how much these have helped me out. I'm not even trying to be uni im just trying to get above 50% when right as I'm stuck at 46.3

I have similiar stats to yours, just with +1% extra win ratio, good to see a player like me, especially because you dont seem to use Gold Rounds (atleast these videos) even in poor pen tanks (this has the combo of accuracy AND low pen) and you can actually reason your decisions unlike some people who seem to get stats by pure luck of the draw.

The problem with hill is that other enemy meds or light tanks might go faster than you and if you are alone up there you might find your tank in crossfire. For myself i check the enemy team to see their fast tanks and count them and then who from my team head to the hill. It's like a poker game where you have to check your chances. Also one big issue for T 44 and its approach to high grounds is it's depression .
loulakion understood.For Mines, here's what I try to do:- if I'm in a fast tank and it looks like other friendlies are going there too, I'll push hill- if I'm in a slower/bulkier tank and/or it looks like other friendlies are not going there, I'll challenge the entrance to hill and try to hit tanks that go up there, but I won't push into a situation where I'm outnumbered at the top of the hillPeople sometimes give up too much of their HP getting to the top of hill.

My question is how do u get that info bar (is it a Mod ?) On top of your tank. It shows your name , Overall Wn, WN8, Total Battles, Victories, Day 1, 7, 30, 60.

The WN8 info bar is simply the signature image from WoTLabs overlaid on the game footage. It's not a mod.

I'd say get the top gun on any tank you plan on continuing to play or is mountable as an upgrade for the next tier's tank

Mines hill is definitely not as safe with 3 arties.

Just a small thing though. T69 has worse penetration with its 173 mm and there's obviously the Super Pershing with 170 mm. 175 mm is still pretty meh though, but it's the same as T-34-3. Pershing has 180 mm and Type 59 and T-34-2 both have 181 mm, so if you exclude the "sniper mediums", the T-44 is pretty much on par with the other mediums of the tier when it comes to penetration. It's in the middle of the non-snipers really. (170-181 mm)
The KV-5 has 167 mm and the IS-6 and 112 have 175 mm penetration, and they still seem to do alright even though they're unlikely to get a lot of flanking done like the T-44 is able to. If they can manage with 167 mm and 175 mm while facing mostly other heavy tanks from the front, I think the T-44 should be okay with 175 mm penetration as well. :p

Fair enough, and thanks for pointing that out. I should have said 175 is 'one of' the lowest silver penetrations but not the lowest
I played the Centurion I (~226 pen) and Panther 2 (~203 pen), and the drop to 175 pen was very noticeable.
Taugrim Yup, absolutely. 175 mm can get very frustrating, when you're used to 200 mm or more. :)

I'M currently searching around the place for tips and tricks with the 44 to improve my performance, and this video was by far one of the best, and I've immediately migrated over to watch your tier 10 tips video.

Check out Episode #9 on flanking maneuvers. It's a video on the T-54 but the same concepts apply to the T-44.
Taugrim Just watched it and it's a relief to know I'm playing at least on par with what you're saying there, with a few exceptions. I would've pushed for the T34-1 kill, but your comment on not knowing where other hostiles are is a very good point, I've certainly had moments where pushing for what was suppose to be an easy kill has punished me.
As for another point, when you flanked those 3 tanks I would've gone right into it immediately to avoid taking shots to the rear armour, as it was 1 tank you can easily circle kill and 2 1 shots. Would that be the right play?

In this case, it would have been fine, but I wasn't sure whether my allies would come over the crest and support me, so I played it conservative and smart.

I didn't re-roll either. There's no shame to have poorer stats due to learning the game.
I would recommend you to reload some gold shells (like 10) it won't cost you much if you don't fire them in the game, and when it come to carrying the game at the end they REALLY save games, cuz sometimes you don't have enough time to aim at weakspot. Cheers!

I think most people know when to use gold. The problem is some people become dependent on it and fire it when they don't need to.
Since I'm using silver ammo only, I hoping to show that with proper weakspot targeting and flanking, penetration is doable with silver.

Well, that's part of the motivation for me to do what I'm doing without gold ammo - it's atypical. I've been averaging a Super Uni WN8 over the past 3k battles.

Do you mean grinding the T-54 by going through the A-43 line? The A-43 doesn't lead to the T-44.
The three options for getting to the T-54 are the two medium lines and the new light tank line.
I considered all three, but looked mostly at the two medium lines. I chose the T-44 line over the Object 416 line for the following reasons:
1. I prefer the T-34-85 on paper over the A-43. The T-34-85 has much higher silver pen
2. I skipped the tier 7 T-43. Would have done the same for the A-44, which is by reputation a horrid tank.
So the tier 7s weren't a factor in choosing a medium line
3. The Object 416 is supposed to be an amazing tank.
However, the LB-1 gun from the T-44 carries over to the T-54. Also, the T-44 is closer to the T-54 in terms of playstyle.
I was also morbidly curious how I would do in the T-44 with the lousy 175 silver penetration. Now I know LOL. I would say that the T-44 with only silver ammo struggles to carry. It lacks alpha, penetration, and armor hardness.
I started playing the T-54 this week and am really appreciating what an excellent all-around tank it is, relative to the T-44.
I actually got both the tanks wrong :P Haha! What I MEANT to say was how to grind the KV-13 through T-43 and continue down that line! The KV-13 is such a hooorrible tank! And T-43 doesn't look much better :P

Bjørnar Magnussen I'd skip the T7 Russian mediums, if you can. Also, the KV-13 is an extra step you don't need to go through.
Yes, I'll post a T-54 video down the road. I have a couple good battles recorded but not a great illustrative one yet.
I just hate mines anymore because of the hill. There is no active strategy for countering the other team if they have the hill. You have to play extremely campy, let them get spotted and hope to have a shot. Which if they are good never happens.
That said, I most certainly use it and abuse it when I am in the fast medium.
Yes, it sucks when the other team captures hill in force and without losing much HP. Like you said, in such a case you have to play very campy, which makes for a slow / boring battle.
Having the hill is nice, but not everything. If they wanna shoot from the hill, someone can shoot back. I've been finding in my games, mostly Tiers V, VI, and VII, that if both sides go for hill, first tank up the hill -- dies. You get shot to pieces by the first and second enemy tank going up the hill. What's your feeling on that? I have the xvm, and if I see our team is tomato heavy, and our speedy tanks are played by poor players I won't lead the charge even when I am the fastest because I know as soon as they see the enemy, they're all going to stop, and I die. It's gotten to the point where if I see the Reds are going hill as welll I often peel off and do something else figuring I'll nust die from lack of support anyway, so why get killed in the first thirty seconds. Comments?
Super Pershing has less pen of 170mm at T8

Since I don't play premium tanks much (aside from the FCM 50t), I often don't think of them when grinding tank lines.

steve Apperley this game has a high learning curve. I've continued to get noticeably better every few thousand battles.

TheSilver Chord I dunno, haven't tried any Chinese tanks.
Taugrim Chinese tanks are a significant challenge I think. Lack of gun depression is the big thing along with generally poor mobility. Some of their guns have inferior stats and handling characteristics. If you ever find yourself looking for a new challenge in WoT, look there. I would recommend their light and heavy lines. 121 is the only tier 10 medium that shoots AP.

Fine in Flatland, but really limits what you can do in maps with hills/crests.
