It wasn't it was to prevent anyone from getting unanimous. 1 or more voters have voted against every single player elected but one. And that was probably because people didn't think Rivera could get 100% because he was a reliever.
Playing Devil’s Advocate here, but I believe some voters have decided not to vote for “Slam Dunk” candidates like Ichiro based on this logic: “I know everyone is voting for this guy, so I’m going to NOT going to vote for him, and instead I’ll vote for a more fringe player to help them stay on the ballot for next year” (players need to receive at least 5% of the total votes in order to be on next year’s ballot). Personally, I think this logic is kinda silly; deciding not to vote for an all-time great in order to keep a fringe guy on the ballot is dumb (fringe guys are fringe guys for a reason), but I believe this is the logic some voters take on.
Thats exactly what it is. No player has been 100 except 1. Every single player has had voters vote against them and the vast majority of those votes weren't on the merits but to prevent 100% with some wanting to save space on their ballot. If we look at all of history 100s of voters have done what this guy did.
Crazy how someone would do this. Best thing to do is to call it out, and then give the writer no attention. He obviously did it because he knew Ichiro would get in but didn’t want him to be unanimous.
Wonder if its the same guy who didnt vote for Jeter Man inspired a whole nation to love baseball. So many of the Japanese players look up to him. Ichiro, a great professional and personality. It’s not just the stats, its who he is and how he defined the game and inspired others too.
This can be solved pretty easily, as a rough example say there were 102 voting ballots, you have a bad take buffer of 2 so if you get 100 votes it's unanimous. Basically a few ballots get eliminated each vote to stop any form of misinformation or dislike of a person affecting a unanimous decision.
The HOF voting system is flawed because there isn't a clear cut standard for what makes a player HOF worthy. In the 80s and 90s a player had to meet certain milestones like 500 homeruns, 3000 hits, or 300 wins for Pitchers. Sometimes players who didn't reach those numbers could get in because of other contributions. A couple of good examples are Brooks Robinson and Ozzie Smith. Their counting numbers are far from being Hall worthy, but both are considered to be the best there ever was when it came to defense at their positions. Until the HOF Committee comes up with a strict guide line for what makes a player hall worthy, we are always going to have controversy.
If the voter who didn’t vote for Ichiro did to stand out or attract attention, that’s quite sinful . It was Ichiro’s once in a lifetime opportunity to be an unanimous hall of famer right? Ruin that just for attracting attention? Isn’t that extremely cruel?
I feel like the writer should just make it a gag at this, like a guy worthy of a unanimous 1st ballot selection comes on the ballot and all the writers all put their names into a hat and and who ever gets selected has to sit out voting for them because this a fucking joke
Instead of this, why not focus on giving all the voting or at least 2/3 of it to the players (to be determined who) and coaches? This surely would reduce most of the injustices and racism (of any kind) existing now!
What’s funny is someone like Joey Votto is going to get voted in 100% when they arguably don’t belong to be there. And no I don’t think Joey Votto is a HOFer.
The voters have always said that they didn't vote for the obvious player because they wanted to give their vote to a less deserving player... Why? What's the point? Someone like Ichiro, Junior, and Babe Ruth, they should be unanimous no matter what. The guys that are less deserving are that way for a reason.Give the best players EVER 100% of the vote!!! Seriously, who else on the list was deserving after the first 4 or 5 guys? All they need is 5% to stay on the ballot. They will get that. Again, the best players should get 100% no matter what. It's time to out these people and shame them for their ineptitude...🤨
People complaining about Ichiro not being unanimous are completely missing the point. There are 4-5 guys on the ballot who had better careers than Ichero and didn’t make it in. That the real sin. Who cares about unanimous votes? And when did anybody think Ichero - a borderline halll of famer - should be elevated about all the other greats who weren’t unanimous.
But Suzuki hit for average and average no longer matters, I have been told. Probably not Hall of Fame worthy by modern day metrics...gets hits who cares now.
If pujols doesn’t get unanimous when he’s first on the ballot that would be a travesty you can’t say well babe Ruth or Hank Aaron wasn’t unanimous so nobody should so you don’t vote for him I haven’t seen anyone that says ichiro isn’t a hall of famer he’s not linked to steroids and he is well liked by everybody so why didn’t someone vote for him he needs to have a legitimate reason or he shouldn’t be allowed to vote
Beltran and Jones are getting in next year. And Utley may. No big 1st ballot candidates. So the top 3 remaining (without steroid history) should get huge looks. May help Andy Pettitte too since pitchers are going to start looking worse in comparison.
Sorry, but it's hard for me to get excited over Ichrio not being unanimous. Yes, he's well deserving of being a 1st-ballot Hall of Famer, but I think he's like borderline Top 50 in baseball history. An incredible player and one of the most fun to watch of his era, but he's not super-elite in the grand scheme of baseball. There have been much better players with a lot fewer votes.
kinda funny that relief pitchers are being looked over when rivera is the only unanimous😂now knowbodys rivera butrelievers still need love...glad wagner made it👏

Public vote solves this issue
Would sure love to hear the reason why that one voter doesn’t think Ichiro is HoF worthy, because whatever their reason is, it’s incorrect.
Only thing I can think is that they figured ichiro was guaranteed to get in so they threw a vote onto someone who was close to the threshold instead.
